Love the A7s! One of the acts I worked with, I mixed a club band in the 90s and although I had access to the finest live gear available, they insisted we use their A7s as mains ... I'll tell you what they were just fine! I did use subs but the Altecs are an outstanding design. They held their own with no issues. Eventually they were relegated to foldback and visuals ... love the A7s!
Those red A7s are mine. I bought them as beat up black cabinets with some 803b woofers ( now 416d-16) and Emilar EA-175 Horn drivers. The horns are Altec 511s that were kind of flaky. I was having some powder coating done and I had them add them to the batch. The cabinets I added an extra layer of 1/4” Baltic birch all the way around ( it’s all 1” thick now) and refabricated the panels and grills. I gave a smaller opening on the grill to improve bass response. They’re bi-amped using MiniDSP as a crossover with tube MC60s on top and a MC250 on the woofers. You need a sub, because even though they’re large, you can’t get really low extension without them.

Hi @eJacob! I'm the owner of the Audio Research system in the video. To answer your question, yes, my system definitely does work (wonderfully, I may add) and yes, it is possible to build an Audio Research rig for less than a thousand bucks for each component. The main tricks are, one, sticking to Audio Research's solid-state amps, which are very under valued when compared to their tube-based models. And two, for the pre-amp components, you will find better values staying away from their Reference line, which command very high prices even for vintage gear. It took me just under three years to get the Audio Research pieces at the prices I wanted. But I would venture to guess that even though they are considered vintage components, they would easily compare well to similarly priced components of today, if not better them. Another great video Steve! A question/clarification on the last system Klipsch, when you bi-amp is it mean you connected 2 pairs of wires per speaker from the 2 amps? If so why bi-wire as well?
I get it when people have more than one pair of speakers, and can switch them around as their mood fits, but I can't for the life of me figure out why you would want to play multiple sets at the same time. It must sound like a mess! Imagine a car collector, who found a way to connect together his Corvette and his Ferrari, and then drive them both down the road at the same time. This multiple speakers at once thing makes about as much sense.

Not having floorstanders or a cartridge in my system probably puts me in the minority but I love how inclusive your channel and this hobby is! Keep up the great work, Steve, and know you're making this strange and difficult time for humanity a little bit more tolerable!
In some cases I'm guessing they hook up different sets just because. The last one I've got no idea. But then there's home theater. I'm coming to grips with that as well. If you've got a stellar 2-channel system, but want a home theater also and have only one room, what's your solution? You're not going to hook up a multi channel Yamaha HT receiver to your $12k speakers and toss your tube electronics are you? Nope, you set up your 5.1 or 7.2 or whatever in the same room. I've got 2 big rooms I can set up in, but only _one_ is perfect for home theater (it's pre-wired for projector or TV & 7.2.2 Atmos). _And,_ it's also the only room that's easily _tamable_ acoustically for 2-channel setup. Ugh.
I’m not talking about home theater. Basically, multiple 2 channel systems in one room. Not good for a dozen reasons. Some years ago, dealers began to advertise single speaker system listening rooms for best sound. What changed?
Thanks Luka, that's hilarious! There's nothing quite like a keyboard that makes more noise than the stereo. I do have wired keyboards but the bluetooth is best right now as I'm switching between 3 PCs while working from home.
I’m sure they all “sound good”, whatever that means to the individual owners. But... holy cow, some are such an eyesore I wouldn’t want them in my home.
I agree....some are beautiful though. Did you see the guy that had 3 pairs of speakers running at once. What a mess that looked.....like looking into the back of an electrician’ van 👎

Love the Pics Steve. I wish you would show more pics in the future instead of the camera always being focused on you.
Steve at time 5:00 those are not 2 way transmission loaded PMC Twenty5 24 speakers.
How about a show featuring old stereos costing under $300? ;-)
Spelling mistake/typo in thumbnail caption. '...show off...' should be two separate words. Please modify and update ASAP. Thanks.
I gotta send a pic in one of these days
9:36 Many thanks for posting my system and making my cat, Charlie, famous. It's really a pleasure to be able to share my audiophile passion with you and your great viewers! Not having floorstanders or a cartridge in my system probably puts me in the minority but I love how inclusive your channel and this hobby is! Keep up the great work, Steve, and know you're making this strange and difficult time for humanity a little bit more tolerable!
pdxcouch thanks
Hello sir..

I would kill to be able to hear all of these
If he bought that Technics system at 16 yo, he definitely used his parents credit card! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😎😎
I have been an audiophile as long as Steve G. When did it become "normal" to have multiple sets of speakers in one system?

@@JohnDoe-np3zk LOL. Exception to the rule!
@@DrGregC I do miss that system and the GAS Son of Ampzilla window rattler
Thanks Steve. Greatly enjoyed it. Pure audiophile porn!😉
Why are cats such an integral part of stereo systems? Klipsch even has them in their IG pages.
Cats and electrostatic don't mix .
introverts
Aussies Rule ! lol
Guy at 11:37 get yourself a keyboard worthy of your sound system. IBM model F or something
Thanks Luka, that's hilarious! There's nothing quite like a keyboard that makes more noise than the stereo. I do have wired keyboards but the bluetooth is best right now as I'm switching between 3 PCs while working from home.
Thiel, woo-hoo!
10:52 *Why* is there a shaving brush .. why
I counted 3 cats and 1 dog...
Last guy for sure owns an ATV and has 7 washing machines rusting next to his gator pit
That’s a nice pile of junk you got there m’boy!!!
