I was hesitant on Reading Vagabong and now I'm INVESTED
I have a confession. I never liked the Kojiro arc when I read Vagabond. In fact, I *HATED* it but watching this video has changed my mind about him. Kojiro is Not some one line spouting bad ass. He is a blood thirsty man child who knows very little about the world outside of fighting. When I first read the story, I think I was angry that unlike Musashi Kojiro doesn't 'get better' but I now realize that is the whole point. He is very much the foil to Musashi.
Musashi is a man who uses the way of the sword to become stronger.
Kojiro on the other hand is a man who uses strength to follow the way of the sword. Swordsmanship is just a game to him.
Kojiro isn't evil per say but he is immature and unlike Musashi's final arc where he lays down the sword in order to expand his horizons. Kojiro has zero desire to expand beyond what he is. This is his fatal flaw.
It was that one line at 1:35:45 which changed my mind about him. The people around him are begging him to change and become a better person but he just *Won't* *Listen*
Kojiro is ultimately a tale about what happens when a man cannot and will not change.
At the moment he is stronger than Musashi sure. But unlike Musashi Kojiro's arc is almost completely flat and his deafness is a metaphor for how he cannot learn or be told the greater truths of universe.
This is why Musashi learned from his first 'fight' with Kojiro but Kojiro didn't.
He's a much more flawed and tragic character than you would initially think. His arrogance, childishness and lack of ability to change is ultimately what will cause him to die by Musashi's hand.
I rarely change my mind about a story once I have read it but you sir have convinced me to give this another read.
