Very cool! Studio date was days after my 18th bday, and only a few months before I joined my first "real" band. I was marveling at how David Leonard's OVERtime rate was $10/hr - significantly lower than today's U.S. min wage.
To clarify the "Dirty Laundry" section - those synth/organ parts were all Danny Kortchmar's, the co-writer of the song. I didn't mention Danny enough in my description of the session. He was totally guiding the proceedings, knew exactly what he wanted and was an absolute groove to work with. The genius behind the synth parts was Kootch - I'm describing how we pulled it off. I added some samples and sweetened it later but Danny was the man that night. I was always thrilled to get invited to the party.
Steve, I have commented below should you be interested. But, so many people overlook Kootch, however, I have to say, how much grace you have shown over the years. Your genius (not withstanding everyone else's in the band) is recognised by many. I've watched many snippets of you saying you had your fill with touring. I get that. Your body of work, talent and dedication are legendary. I listened to Jeff playing with David on the Paiste products release when I was like 14 yrs old (Im nearly 50 now). I listened to The Seventh One daily from being 14 til about 18 lol - playing along with Jeff. However, all of you inspired me - over the years I've been fortunate to message back and forth with Luke - some years ago now - but you guys have absolutely been the bedrock of my musical life. I realise many may message you - but I just wanted to thank you, sorry for the fanboy stuff, but you've really impacted my life for many positive reasons. So thank you Sir. I hold you in high esteem
You are such a top notch person Steve to add this comment. I’ve always loved TOTO from “Hold the Line” all the way through late 70s/80s era. I bet you have been a joy & a blast to collaborate with through the years. I commend you Steve Pocarao and the entire Porcaro family !! Your name is synonymous with Excellence in Music History!! Thank you Steve!! ❤️🩹🙏❤️
Totally agree. We owe a debt of thanks to Steve Porcaro for his talent and willingness to brute force the early-day tech into musical submission. All those Paich piano keyboard riffs were always the sounds that hooked me in. Amazing interview- I was floored by the knowledge of the (young!) interviewer- gonna do some homework on him, clearly he is someone I should know more about.
If u take Luke out of the band they can pull it off w out the others but w out Luke hell naw..thing Is all are great but w out Luke there is no ToTo. Real talk 😊
Thank you. Most people think Toto ended after IV. The subsequent albums just got better and better. The melodies got stronger. Luke's solos became more inspirational. Every single time they brought their A Game. Right up to their finale Old Is New. In my life Toto are simply ubiquitous and so so needed.
The first 4 albums are the GOLD standard of TOTOS history because the first album (TOTO)was an out of the box success Hydra and Turn Back not as successful but the TOTO rises like a Phoenix getting 9 Grammy nominations but taking home 6 Grammys for TOTO IV. Yes all the succeeding albums are great but the first four showed they were hungry. Can't beat that notion.
That's unimaginable tbh 🤔, 1000s of songs would sound somehow more or less different, in a way. A lot of pop/rock music of the last 50 years would probably not even exist!
Watching the end bought tears to my eyes ,as the older I get I realise how lucky I was growing up in such a grest era of music. Thanks to all involved in getting this music to us.
I feel ya ❤ I was born in 85 but my dad introducing me to toto and boz scaggs at a young age started my venture into knowing almost everything that these geniuses have worked on. I've had a 2year hiatus from playing but have been watching these guys talk lately is getting them juices flowing again. They will always be my heroes
I RARELY watch YT videos without fast forwarding through various parts... This interview and the previous one with Steve Lukather were watched start to finish. The knowledge and even more so, the IMPACT these session musicians had on music cannot be overstated. Being 53 years old, I was so fortunate to grow up when musicians actually had to figure things out strictly by the level of their musicianship. I was listening to Spotify one day recently and a song (not Toto) I haven't heard in well over 35 years came on. When I looked at the credits... yup.. Luke and Jeff were on it. I challenge anyone that watched this interview to Google search each one of the Toto musicians. They have contributed to so many hit songs that you'd be floored. While Michael Jackson's Thriller album is no doubt one of the greatest of all time, you'll see Toto's DNA all over it. These guys are true legends!!
When I was 13 years-old, I saw "99" on some video show before MTV, and I went to my parent's piano (which I still have) and learned how to play 99 by ear. I could go on-and-on, but it doesn't matter. At the age of 57, I'm still a huge fan, and thankful for David and Steve, and thank you TOTO! You made so many of us so damn happy!
Good grief… The playing at the end from them both is incredible. Absolutely beautiful and that piano sounds amazing. Legends… Both of them. Thank you for this video.
These guys are the biggest part of my life's soundtrack, from hearing the debut album at age 15, all the way up to and through their latest solo records. No one will ever come close to achieving the musical legacy ALL the members of TOTO have, even if a lot of it made its impact by their contributions being made behind the scenes. Well done Sunset Sound for putting this, and the Steve Lukather interview, together for past, present, and future generations to enjoy and learn from!
This was wonderful. I remember I wrote to the Toto fan club, which had the address on maybe the inner sleeve of the first album, I received I think a t-shirt, an 8x10 band photo, and a pencil lol - this was in 1979, I was 12. Luke signed the photo when Toto played The Roseland in NYC in 1992 touring behind KOD, he saw the photo and cracked “Oh man, whaddya have, my baby pictures?” How I love Toto.
So awesome to see interviews with guys I grew up listening to! At 60 years old I still think back on the first time I heard Hold the Line on the radio in 1978 as a 15 year old!
Toto is the true all-star band... No other band has the same high quality musicians on every single instrument, and they are incredibly humble about it, which makes it perfection! One day I want to visit that studio just to feel the vibes that are probably in the air there... Thanks for this amazing interview!! 🤘🤘🤘
These guys are heroes who only come around once in a lifetime. Could literally listen to them speak all day and still be hooked on every word. Thanks for the great interview.
At its core, such an inspired piece of pop music, and then the amazing recording treatment for Thriller. Huge hit, and still somewhat under appreciated. Q knew what he had when he heard that basic demo. You can tell Steve P never gets tired of being asked to play it. ❤
just awesome to hear two giants play their greatest stuff!! ... sitting back, relaxing in their comforting company after a very fun and honest chat....What an incredible reach of musical addition to our world of music this small group of people have had!! ...Jeff, Steve, Mike & Joe - David & Marty - Joseph & John - Bobby, Philips - Hungate, Sklar & Nathan - Phillinganes! Castro! Amy! Jenny! Schmitt, Swedien, Quincy....OMG! Footwork, knowledge, sweat and tears that can never be measured.....
What a terrific interview. So much more to Toto regarding their history and formation, the music scene around them, ALL the artists they rubbed shoulders and played with. Just amazing. I knew of their session work, but adding all the details of David and Steve's fathers plus the legacy of Sunset Sound. Wow. Thank you.
This is awesome. The mostly unheralded part of Toto that not many knew about. These two guys have played on so much amazing music it would make your head spin if you didn't already know about it.
Thank you so much. That was fantastic. Pure joy for me. Not only are David and Steve musical giants - their humility, graciousness, and generosity of spirit are an inspiration. Their true nature, like their music, shines through. 🙏
I love, love, love you guys!!! Great interview! I can't imagine what my life would be like without you, Jeff, Mike -- and your fathers. Thanks for the mention, Dave 😊
The amount of pure music and energy which flows between Steve P and David Paich equals half of the modern planet’s electricity consumption. 💯 They are modern geniuses. There would not be pop and rock as we know it without them.
Such a very special interview. They just sit down and talk for a few hours and are such absolute legends. These talks are so essential to documenting music history. Thank you Sunset . just smashed the "like" button and subscribed.
You know, I always enjoy seeing how the sausage is made. What distinguishes many of these artists is that they are musicians first and foremost. This comes across vividly. Having a place like Sunset Sound where music became a songs is very cool. Thanks for the insights. Of all things that man/women create, sometimes I feel music is our most significant contribution to the universe.
Thank you, Sunset! Thank you David and Steve!❤️A great interview with two of my music heroes! Looking forward to hear many more projects from both of you! With love from Norway!❤️🇳🇴
Superb video guys. Wonderful interview. Toto are criminally underrated in the rock world. One of the greatest bands of all time. Certainly the most musical.
I really was going to listen to this for a bit & go to bed, but every time I tried to leave...I just couldn't stop listening. Here it is 3:00am and I'm still listening - 500M songs, moves albums, movies sold that you guys were involved with - unmatched. David & Steve are incredible legends of the industry. This was an amazing interview. The stories, professionalism, background on other groups, albums, & songs. Just a joy to watch and listen.
Beato level. Thanks to everyone. This is pure gold. The best documentary about the legendary Porcaro and Paich family so far. The studio scene on LA 70-80 is so interesting. Now some time with Hungate and Sklar please.
I love these interviews/rap sessions. Thank you, Sunset Sound, for giving the time and energy to let the actual cats in the room commit these legendary musical memories to eternity. And also, for being Sunset friggin Sound.
Whosever idea it was to mic up the piano was a genious! That was pure magic seeing those two reminisce and play together, exchange ideas etc….that piano sounds absolutely perfect….
I've been really sick for a while now. I fell asleep listening to this video and was having kind of a bad dream. But then, somewhere in the back of my sleeping mind, I heard Steve Porcaro playing "Human Nature" and I gradually woke up with a huge smile on my face. Thank you for a much-needed blessing to my soul this morning.
What is mindblowing to me is when David plays Hold the Line you can hear that the original is recorded right there by that man… OMG that is HUGE! And I almost cry every time when Steve plays Human Nature right there! ❤ Hi from an MI student. I’m passing Sunset Sound every day thinking of these guys, Luke who is a dear friend and how the changed the world in those rooms. ❤
WOW, another AWESOME interview from you guys! Back in 1985 I had the honor and privilege of meeting and becoming friends/acquaintances with Jeff, Mike, Steve, and David! Which for me BLEW MY MIND COMPLETELY because they were my “heroes”! I was overwhelmed by how EXTREMELY kind they all were to a 18 year old kid who admired them so much! I am 56 year old presently but I instantly become that 18 year old kid whenever I see updated post/videos about them. Great job guys, keep up the good work!
@danielduplantier3741 no Detroit. Don't be a music snob. What I like is my business. Music from 1983 was real musicians playing real music. That song has special music bc it reminds me of my brother who died. He loved that song. FYI Afrixa was the last song added to Toto 4. Lukather thought it was the farthest thing from a hit. Had goofy lyrics. But 40 years later the song is still popular...loved by everyone except you apparently
I met the members of Toto when I was working as host at a breakfast diner (Eppie's) in Davis, CA in Dec.79 or Jan.80. I didn't know they're faces, but they were wearing tour jackets. I took a break to get their cassette tape from my car for them to sign. They ended up giving me a ticket for that night's show. The more I learn about these guys, the more I cherish that memory.
Can't tell you how much I enjoyed this interview with Messrs. Paich and Porcaro. I've loved Toto since 1978 and it was a joy to see these two incredible musicians and friends share stories and insights on the music and musicians I love and have listened to my entire life. Great channel! I'm now subscribed!
Met David, Steve, and James Newton Howard at the 1982(?) NAMM show in Atlanta... those dudes jammed together on three gigantic racks and they melted my mind... just blew me away. Steve was so gracious answering some questions I had... great people who just happened to be exceptional musicians.
This is such a treat! True stories from the geniuses and living legends Steve Porcaro and David Paich. Thank you very much and kudos to Sunset Sound Recorders for featuring this!
Toto & B.O.C. my all-time favorites. All of these Sunset Sound documentaries are PACKED full of priceless info. These vids have helped me tie everything together musically as a guitarist of 50 years who has had much studio experience. I sometimes wish I knew then what I know now. This is actually musically annointed medicine for me. Thanks to all of you & to TOTO too. -☀️
Absolutely amazing conversation. I locked on to Toto and became a huge fan as a teenager in the early nineties (thank you father) and continue to play their albums all the time (solo stuff too). Along the way (and thanks to the arrival of the internet) I learned what a session player was all about and that all the Toto guys were heavy participants in the scene. I've seen a couple of lists over the years that have attempted to put across just how many artists they've worked with... and those lists are always incomplete. I recall that Luke said in an interview years ago that be it singularly and collectively the members of Toto have played on over 5000 songs covering every genre of popular music except rap. - How magical is that? I could listen to these guys talk about their amazing careers all day long. Well done for making this happen.
That was an awesome interview & while I’ve watched Luke’s interview numerous times I know I will watch & listen to this one many more times. These guys are such awesome musicians who along with both Paul & Drew created a outstanding picture of the wonders of recording at Suncoast Sound Studios. The emotions when Drew asked them about the last time they spoke with Jeff you could feel the brotherly love from both David & of course Steve that was just oozing out of them. It was quite like the same emotions when Luke spoke about how much he loved Jeff & how much he still misses him each & every day!!! BTW my wife & I saw Luke just last week at The Fox Theater here in Atlanta with all the wonderful musicians in Ringo’s All Starr Band if you get a chance to see the show don’t miss it, it to was quite wonderful too!!!
Toto as a band was the most influential band to me as a musician more than any other. Jeff is my drumming hero. As a kid o always wanted a synth rig like steves even though i can't play a note on a synth. These guys are just genius to me. ❤
Thanks for this great interview. I remember when I bought the first TOTO album after hearing Hold The Line on the radio in middle school. Dont judge me! But then, Child's Anthem and Goodbye Girl still gives me goosebumps. I was very lucky to see them on the TOTO IV tour. I would have given anything to be in the studio with them back then. So talented and so much great music over the years. I was a little disappointed that they stopped on the Fahrenheit album. Would have liked to hear more about recording the other albums and what was going on. Interview Part 2?!?!?!
Knocked it out of the park!!!!!!!!!!!! best interview so far for me..... I could listen to these guys talk about their legendary musical lives for hours... Just incredible!!!! Thanks so much....... Now, when is Donn Landee coming in?
Steve porcaro is such a cool cat man... He has an awesome knoweledge about keyboards/synth and so creative, and throug the 70s and 80s he had such an awesome vibe and style... Man hes an awesome source of wisdom in music as paich

Yes, because the Boomers got to exploit the technology first because of an accident of birth.

Musical royalty. Never again will we see an era like the 70s and early 80s. Unparalleled musicianship and commitment to craft. Humbling and inspiring.
Totally agree.

Imagine what albums might be like without Toto. The group is full of geniuses. Thanks, Sunset for the great interview.
I’m very, very late to the party just discovering all the amazing contributions the members of Toto have made to albums I loved in the 80s.
That's unimaginable tbh 🤔, 1000s of songs would sound somehow more or less different, in a way. A lot of pop/rock music of the last 50 years would probably not even exist!

I am 56 year old presently but I instantly become that 18 year old kid whenever I see updated post/videos about them. Great job guys, keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for this. It could be 5 hours long and it would still be short. Rosanna is a masterpiece
A group like TOTO was a TOTAL experience
ALL IN ALL
Bless you both Human Nature, Rosanna and Africa are in my life's jukebox all time hits. Thank you for the music
But 40 years later the song is still popular...loved by everyone except you apparently
i've come to realize that these guys are on every album I've ever bought. :)
Late 70 early 80 was a great time in music
Thank you so much Sunset Sound for this interview! 🙏 two ABSOLUTE Legends ❤❤
I cannot find the right words to say how much I love and respect them! ❤❤
What a treat to hear those two, wow!
Thank you to all involved. So great to hear these insights! Sending love to the Toto/ Porcaro families.
The respect they have for each other, just nice to watch and the brotherly love... Pleasure to watch.....
Toto as a band was the most influential band to me as a musician more than any other. Jeff is my drumming hero. As a kid o always wanted a synth rig like steves even though i can't play a note on a synth. These guys are just genius to me. ❤
Absolutely awesome! Seeing and hearing these 2 legends. Many thanks SunsetSound!
Oh men...what a legends. Born in 68.....made it through the 80's with the best music ever!
The end says it all. So much music in these two guys!!
The whole interview was outstanding. Watching them play piano at the end was amazing. Wow. Thank you for sharing...
That was awesome. I wish each of them would write a book.
These men have stories to tell - I can't stop listening, incredible
Love this interview.
I grew up with Toto.

These are two of my favorite guys from one of my all time favorite bands.
Seeing Steve play Human Nature...wow. what a special moment. People who play music know how special these guys are.
I feel so blessed to have gotten to see these guys live back in the day. What a band. Terrific interview.
Toto Kicks ass. I went to a couple of shows, but they would play the first records.... I love the old music...
WOW! Wonderful interview/discussion. Very insightful and inspiring. A delight to watch. Thank you.
Nobody Wins is a great song...now made even better knowing Steve's on there.

I love this interview. And, btw, Forgotten Toys is fantastic!
