The music of LIS always felt like another character in the show. A main character full of emotion, excitement, and often scary! Loved it so much.

Oh, where to begin? Firstly, I cannot thank you more highly for putting into words and vision my feelings for the music used in Lost in Space which became the soundtrack of my life growing up. It was the music of this show which turned me on to classical music and the collecting of film music. I agree with all the comments you have made here. In my case I have always loved the themes written for the episode "My Friend Mr. Nobody." The final six minutes of music in that episode created a sense of wonder about the universe within me that has not abated to this day.
Someone needs to write a book about the scoring for Lost in Space. I think you would do an excellent job of it. Moreover, someone needs, desperately, to interview John Williams about how he developed the themes for Lost in Space before he leaves this mortal coil. He is not a young man afterall and no one has really gone into deep detail about his scoring for the show ever.
Thank you so much for this excellent video.

I am not a writer by trade but am flattered by your suggestion and agree about getting Williams on the record before he's no longer available. I haven't checked, but I suspect most, if not all of the other artists who collaborated in the musical evolution of "LiS" have already passed away. 🤷‍♂️ I always looked forward to the “Penny” cue whenever it turned up: elegiac, melancholy, lonely sounding and immensely beautiful. Agree about the closing of "Mr Nobody" also-enthralling. Your thoughtful reply made my day 😀

    • @tripsadelica

@@tonykluck8458 And your reply made my day down here on a hot summer's day in Melbourne Australia. I have tried everything to make contact with Mr. William's agent and other Hollywood music industry people to try and suggest the idea of a full-scale biography, all to no avail. It would break my heart if he passed without talking about his LIS days.
I also agree about the "Penny" theme. It can stop me in my tracks with its beauty. If you are in the US maybe you can do more than I have been able to accomplish to talk to someone to suggest the biography idea. Anyway...best wishes to you.

Lost in Space producer Irwin Allen sure saw the musical imagination and drama Williams could contribute to his big-screen Poseidon Adventure and Towering Inferno!

Bravo! What a wonderful study on arguably some of the best music ever written for television. I happily own the box set (and even provided recreations of the logos for the packaging artwork, and many other Lost In Space products). I too, used to put a tape recorder up to the TV to capture the music, especially the 3rd season theme. I didn't know anyone cared as much for this music as I did... and you clearly do. Subscribed!

This is great! So good to finally have a video focusing on this brilliant set of music from my favorite childhood show. I've been a fan of this music since I was five and have been a collector of the various score releases over the years including the more recent and definitive La la Land Box set. So much can be said about the various cues throughout the series but I feel you covered it very nicely here anyway. Bravo and thank you for puting this interesting and informative visual essay together!

Agree all the way around. Recently I began transferring my cassettes from the late 60s and early 70s to digital format. And what did I find? Not just a few tapes made by sticking a cassette recorder next to the small mono TV speaker to capture music and sound effects from Lost in Space. As the music has finally become available over the past decade or so, I find myself often replaying "My Friend, Mr. Nobody" tracks - outstanding work from Williams here. Enjoyed your observations here! Thanks.

The music cue that always get me on a visceral level is _The Landing,_ what with its bells and suspenseful tempo.
I suspect that's why I like when James Horner uses what I call "anvil music," most notably in _Wrath of Khan._

It just impresses me so much how the music from any composer that's not Williams immediately feels like old 50's stuff. But as soon as Williams comes in, you get that other worldly feeling of his music. The world will never got enough music from Williamsno mamtter how many amazing scores he does.

    • @imfsresidentotaku9699

Speak for yourself. Every other composer who worked on the show managed to match his style to the musical identity that Williams established. Even Alexander Courage, known for his work on the contemporary Star Trek which includes its iconic theme music, brought his own sense of otherworldliness to Lost in Space, and many others followed suit, so the only thing that “impresses” you is your own superficiality towards any composer who is not Williams.

I was around 10 when this was first shown in the UK.
I knew straight away the music was special, and it helped make the series great.
What composers they had , and the orchestras were great.
There is no modern science fiction series that can match the compositions.
I actually created a new opening for the new series of LIS using the original series 3 music

I think you missed a brief bit of music when Will and Smith first find the alien ship in WISH UPON A STAR. There's a bit of music that represents the earlier weird music from THERE WERE GIANTS/HUNGRY SEA in the cave city. Special series, indeed and I mean it but the entire IRWIN ALLEN four shows CAN BE said to be special and musically as well, especially LAND OF THE GIANTS and VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. Great scores all.

Who did the musical motifs when the Robinson Family was entering the Freezing Tubes, and up to the musical motifs when the Jupiter 2 Liftoff the Launch Pad in Episode 1 of The Reluctant Stowaway. And also the musical motif as the Jupiter 2 was going through Escape Velocity, and Dr. Smith was unstrapping himself from the Launch Couch. Those music scores are Absolutely Awesome!! BTW, as Dr. Smith was unstrapping himself from the Launch Couch, that seems to have been the musical motifs for Dr. Smith when he was doing something sneaky in the 1st few Episodes in season 1. It has a Dark and Mysterious music tone. LaLa Land Records Didn't even include the musical score during the Final Countdown, as the Jupiter 2 Liftoff from the Launch Pad, which could actually be heard just a bit before Dr. Smith lets out his 1st Famous Scream. It wasn't the Comedic Screaming that Dr. Smith done as the show went on. The Scream in the Reluctant Stowaway had to do with the Anti-Gravity Drive during Liftoff that caused the Glow around the Spacecraft, to escape Earth's Gravity, and yet, the Anti-Gravity Drive was never mentioned in the show. It's explained on the Lost in Space Fan Website, and on Wikipedia as part of the Propulsion System of The Jupiter 2. Guess you can tell, I'm a HUGE Lost in Space Fan!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🌌‼️🤣

I have no idea what you're talking about here - all I know is that the LiS music had way too many trumpets in it. Painful for me to listen to in many episodes.

    • @imfsresidentotaku9699
      @imfsresidentotaku9699 9 місяців тому

That’s all on you for not paying attention to the video and being overly sensitive to trumpets, which are effective in conveying the gravity of any given situation (not that they’re even playing all the time), so I suggest that you stop blaming the music for your pain and go see a doctor.
