    That's interesting. I don't think I've heard "showing your tail" as "showing your true colors" before. That reminds me to the Skogsra, something about if you tell her politely that her tail is showing, she will bless your hunts.

    • @jkh378
      @jkh378 2 роки тому +56

      There's a similar saying in Chinese that roughly translates to "revealing fox's tail" which is used to describe being found out after doing something bad, or revealing one's evil intentions. According to Chinese mythology, foxes can transform into human form, but are unable to transform their tails, so their identities as foxes are revealed when their tails are found.

      Botan meant that it’s amazing that Anya could hold JP conversations and make friends overseas what with her learning nihongo from anime and manga. Anya speaks a sort of otaku Japanese because of it.

  • @chize3085
    @chize3085 2 роки тому +366

    As an Indonesian who’s decently fluent in Japanese (by circumstance) with a similar learning method to what Anya mentioned in the clip, I can confirm that passion is a heavy contributing factor in learning a new language. If you’re not passionate about learning it, you’re not likely to go very far with the exp grind unless you have other factors with learning the language like family influence.
    And from what i’ve seen, Indonesians are especially good at that. I’ve heard my Japanese profs and friends mention that Indonesian students tend to speak really good english and/or japanese. I always tell them it’s not that we’re masters of the language but if anything, we tend to throw away our fear of messing up speaking the language and just shoot our shot. With passion, that is. This greatly helps with our skill development and looking confident definitely adds to the “nihongo/eigo jouzu” factor. You can see this with Ollie and Reine bc from what I’ve seen, their Japanese improved a LOT within the past 1+ years as they try to communicate more with the JP people.
    Sorry for the long comment but I’m just really proud of Holo ID continuously getting better in many aspects 😆

    • @chize3085
      @chize3085 2 роки тому +12

      @@thejamesonthestreet that’s not wrong but just because our language is influenced by many languages, that wouldn’t matter at all in terms of actually learning those other languages since the most you’ll get are loan words. You don’t learn about the respective languages’ grammars from how they influence our language and you certainly won’t become fluent in them just by knowing Indonesian. It’s the raw exposure towards your target language and the effort you put into communicating in said language that really gets you through.

    I liked this clip. I'm saving it to show to people at my Japanese classes.
    Side note: I am 42 years old, disabled and have been trying to learn Japanese since I was 15. ~_~
    Some people just aren't cut out for learning languages. HOWEVER I won't give up since it's also my PASSION, as Anya said.
    My interest in the language also started with anime back in 1992 or 1993. Though technically earlier since I had been watching anime from the 80s, I just didn't know it WAS anime at the time. Or even what anime was.
    Anyone with suggestions on easier ways to learn Japanese for myself, someone who has poor language learning ability and constant severe head pain, I'd appreciate it. Especially if you're a language teacher. Any help is appreciated.

    • @williamzou8833
      @williamzou8833 2 роки тому +2

      That's nice to hear. Good luck in your linguistic pursuit. Regarding lang. learning, people tend to jump straight to complicated constructions/expressions because their fearing of sounding like a toddler. Best to slow down and use simple sentences (subj.+verb+obj. or SOV in this case for JP) until sentences just naturally flow out your head without pause; toss in a couple adjs. before the obj. to spice things up a bit. Grammar becomes easier once you have a good grasp on the basics, knowing what goes where, what needs to be added, etc. You want to convey yourself clearly, not confuse the listener. In addition, pick 8~10 new/common words a week and incorporate them into your daily speech and writing to build up your vocab steadily. You can do more, like learning 50 words per week. However, it's a tad counter-productive, as you may not have enough time to use all of them to help you reinforce what you have learned so far. Consequently, when the next week begins, you are pushing yourself to learn another 50 new words without properly absorbing what you learned previously. Learn to gauge your limit and march steadily.

      Immersion helped me the most. Replace EN stuff, especially entertainment stuff, gradually with JP content until you chase out the EN stuff. But you have to be careful and select stuff that's either at or only just a little bit above your level. If it's too hard, it'll just demotivate you. It's a fine line, but I found immersion to be really helpful.
      I also broke it down into 4 skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They're all slightly different, and require different thought when learning them, but they're all connected. It's comprehension vs production. You gotta be able to do it all, though.
      Anya is right about anime not helping people past a very basic level. You don't want to have a serious conversation with someone who learned English solely by watching Rick and Morty, same goes for JP and anime guys. Don't be that guy. It's mega cringe. Watch other stuff. The news is a good place to start, but really, just about any podcast will do.
      You gotta talk to people regularly in JP, too, or else you'll forget all kinds of stuff. Learn how to describe the things you don't know the words for. It's extremely useful as a skill.
      As for a curriculum, i really have no clue. I audited some classes at my local uni for cheap and got started there, but i did the bulk of the work on my own, with help from tutors in a lot of key points for me. I never really found that Jeebus level JP learning book. They're all kinda okay. Don't obsess over the perfect curriculum or perfect book. Does it help a bit? Great! Nom it and move on.
      And I did all of this while dealing with an inner ear disease (like Kanata's), losing hearing in one ear, and dealing with all kinds of balance and migraine issues related to it. It really helped me take my mind off of having to deal with a lot of crap lol. So it's not impossible to do with a chronic illness. You just have to plod along and refuse to quit. Grindset mindset works wonders IMO. I stopped at N2, but someday I'll stop being lazy and make a run at N1.

I’d say my classes and lots of speaking practice and everything helped me get the important foundations, but it’s the German vtubing scene that’s taken my German to another level. You kinda learn not only what it means to communicate ideas but also to speak naturally, I’d say (I’m not even sure anime or TV could teach what it means to speak naturally, but streaming is live, so it’s all natural and spontaneous). Plus, because of chat, you get a good mix of listening and writing practice and can actually communicate with natives. So yeah, vtubing is really great for language learning.

    I'd actually suggest sort of the opposite. Study Japanese until you start getting a grasp on basic structure and grammar, then start watching anime. You'll be amazed how much you start to recognize and even just pick up from the context of the situation.

    Japanese is an interesting and fun language, it's not difficult to see Anya having a passion for it just because. I know it got me entranced as well, to the point where I don't even need a proper entertainment goal to learn it - understanding the words, the grammar, the thought process behind it are already motivation enough.
    To note, I'm a total aberration, a point off the graph - I don't read manga, play visual novels or watch anime. The most contact I get is vtubers.
