My son loves alligator gar, I love kayak fishing, so we went back and watched this episode. It’s awesome to see how your videos have evolved (video and sound quality as well as content). Huge fan probably my favorite show to watch be it UA-cam, Netflix, cable, etc.
I have a 23 inch Alligator Gar as a pet and we raised it from a hatch ling for over 6 years! These creatures are older than some dinosaurs! Awesome video, Rob! :D
I often fish from a kayak-like rig and I can say without hesitation that I'd have called it a day after a 60 lb freaking Alligator Gar. Mr. Field, you are the man.
Cool video! I'm from SE Michigan and I was sorry to miss you at Kent Lake for the KATS. I just fished their last weekend and caught a few fish. I saw HUNDREDS of vacated bass beds along the SW end of the lake by I96. If you ever wanted to come back for the spawn that seems to be a good spot with hard bottom. Keep up the great videos.
I'm AMAZED!!! I LIKE IT!!! I just discovered you, Robert (Sorry, I'm late) but I'm here and subscribed. Thanks to Louis from "Beyond the bounds" fishing channel. (Thanks Louie!!)
What a great video. Robert, out of curiosity, do you think you could've landed those bigger ones without the pedal drive and had to rely on your paddle? It seems the current, etc. would have made it nearly impossible.
I need to fish the Trinity. Looks like you can pitch a tent on a soft flat bank and set up for gar and catfish. It would make for a few good days in the outdoors.
There's a big spot where people are always camping out just off of hwy 105 when you are coming out of Cleveland headed into Moss Hill ... there's a series of sand bars like 5-6 when the water levels are extremely low (good luck now w/ all of this rain). Never visited them, but they were always parties and families camped out down there just off of the hwy.
awesome catch! would love to catch gar up here in Wisconsin. always see them roaming around while bass fishing. But don't have the right set-up for them.
Up there it's probably longnose and spotted gar. I don't think gator gar venture that far north. Those still get big and are a blast to catch though! I've caught a 49" longnose gar on bass gear and it fought like a tank.
Yeah, they are spotted and longnose. I always try to dish with a steel leader for the fact then northerns like to destroy your bass lures. That good to know, they do.
What hooks and what size were you using I leave by the river Grande we have plenty of gator gat and planning to try and catch 1. hope you can help and freaking awesome video.
man these things have been torturing me. hooked a huge one in the creek amd fought him for a while but only have 12lb test. been watching your videos and stoked to get into a kayak myself. glad i watched this before chasing those big guys in a kayak im not familiar with.
Nice Job. I hope to get after some kayak garfishing this summer. Atchafalaya River. Kinda nervous after watching your video. Did you guys use single hook or treble? Thanks
Robert, your videos are always awesome and have been a real inspiration for me. I got my first 6ft sturgeon from the yak the other day and he was towing me like that sailfish you caught, now I'm hooked on big game! Maybe you could check my sturgeon video out and let me know what you think.
Thanks for the kind words brother! I just watched it, good stuff! Couple suggestions: instead of adding text to explain stuff, record yourself talking about it and layer that audio under the video. People connect to human voices, it'll make people feel like they know you and make them more likely to subscribe. Also, when UA-cam says "Your video is shaky, do you want us to fix it?" Click NO. It gives it a weird distortion. Not sure if you can undo it. And third: less is more. Some of the segments are a bit long when you're fighting it. Try to shorten it down, leave the audience wanting more. All in all great first video though, and I actually have plans to chase sturgeon in that same river with the guys at NRS. Got me excited to get up there!
man i wish i could fish all day everyday, fishing is just awesome and seeing the fish come in 0.0 aspecially if its a huge fish, i don't keep trophies but i sure do love fishing for the fun of it =) nice videos dude =)
since the comments where disabled on the offshore gone wrong part 3 was disabled, did you really have to leave that hook in that second sharks mouth ???
As I stated in the video description on that video, I had tried to remove the hook for about 5 minutes but couldn't get it out. Ultimately I decided that leaving the shark out of the water any longer would kill the fish. That hook rusted out long before you made this comment. It was a mistake I made on my first shark, and since then I've learned to pinch down the barbs so I can remove them, and I even demonstrate that in my other shark video. So, to answer your question, yes, I really had to leave the hook in that shark's mouth to save its life at that point. Thanks for watching.
Thanks bro. None taken, I don't pretend to be a pro angler. I'm still a rookie, been fishing about 3 1/2 years. Struggling through and learning it hands on is what I enjoy most. I always tell people that say they want to do what I do... if I can do it, you definitely can. And are you talking about Josh Dolin?
what I like is you kept going bigger and bigger! I didn't like that you took the kayak on the boat to get to the spot.. Half the fun is getting to the spot!
The river was at flood stage and it was almost impossible to make forward progress against the current. Trying to run the ~10 miles between spots would have taken me all day. We had to switch to Plan B with all the rain we had right before the trip.
+Robert Field sorry! don't mean to bust your chops. I would have done the same with the same conditions. what I'm saying is it's unfortunate you didn't do it yakking to the spots. like I said before, the journey half the battle/fun
Agreed, and like I said, that was Plan A. Sometimes ya gotta just roll with the punches. We contemplated cancelling the trip altogether. Glad we didn't!
It can be tough to keep up with sometimes but I try my best to answer every single comment on my channel. I appreciate everyone who watches my videos, so the least I can do is reply when you guys take the time to watch and comment.
I typed this early in the video, and you missed a few fish, and i was wondering if bigger treble hooks would help, but you ended up catching more fish, so I guess it was fine
I believe Nebraska has longnose and spotted gar, but I don't think they have alligator gar. I could be wrong. They used to be that far north, but they've been pressured for a long time.
Nope, didn't get bit luckily. I did cut my arm on the first big fish's gill plate when I was trying to get him out from under my kayak to hold him up. Everything on that fish will hurt you pretty much, haha.
Yes they did, and I actually talk about that in an upcoming film from the Pecos River in southwest Texas. We found some scales and I talked about that same thing. Good call!
some people over estimate about how dangerous alligator gar are. I live by a river that is full of them and people swim in it and no one has been bit of hurt by one. they are just creepy looking fish!!
aligator gar is the reason i started yaking ... and robert makes this shit look awesome ....
Those fish are crazy!
My son loves alligator gar, I love kayak fishing, so we went back and watched this episode. It’s awesome to see how your videos have evolved (video and sound quality as well as content). Huge fan probably my favorite show to watch be it UA-cam, Netflix, cable, etc.
Thanks Cory that means a lot!
I have a 23 inch Alligator Gar as a pet and we raised it from a hatch ling for over 6 years! These creatures are older than some dinosaurs! Awesome video, Rob! :D
Very cool!
The outtakes were exceptional, lol. Dang, that was some work.
+Patrick Connors haha yes it was man! Those fish are nuts
by far the best fishing from a kayak I have seen. Awesome vids and lets see some more action!!
Thanks brother!
I often fish from a kayak-like rig and I can say without hesitation that I'd have called it a day after a 60 lb freaking Alligator Gar. Mr. Field, you are the man.
Hahaha thanks man! It was hairy for sure, but I had a blast!
well done robert! im from australia and watch every vid and they just keep getting better. keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching man! Hoping to get out to the Pacific this year, would love to fish New Zealand and Australia.
Yeeeeeeah buddy! I would love to catch another one of those. I travel all over to catch different species of fish. That right there is a great fight!
+Sabrina Hullett such an incredible species. This was an experience I'll never forget.
Cool video! I'm from SE Michigan and I was sorry to miss you at Kent Lake for the KATS. I just fished their last weekend and caught a few fish. Thanks for watching man! I'll actually be up there next weekend for the Border City Classic on Lake St. Clair. Hope you can make it out!
That was sick man! Your production value has gotten to be spot on with your videos!
I filmed this back in August, I've gotten better at the filming since then. Should keep getting better! Thanks for watching.
I'm AMAZED!!! I LIKE IT!!!
I just discovered you, Robert (Sorry, I'm late) but I'm here and subscribed.
Thanks to Louis from "Beyond the bounds" fishing channel. (Thanks Louie!!)
Thanks Fred! Glad you're enjoying the videos.
These are the video's I am looking for ;) such an awesome vid with great fish!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome work brother. The outtakes are great!!
Haha thanks man! There were a lot more funny ones I didn't include for the sake of time.
What a great video. Robert, out of curiosity, do you think you could've landed those bigger ones without the pedal drive and had to rely on your paddle? It seems the current, etc. would have made it nearly impossible.
No, if I hadn't had the pedals, I would have rescheduled this trip. The pedals were key in controlling these fish with the river flowing so fast.
Enjoyed the video man. Gar are definitely my favorite freshwater fish. I can't wait till I get a yak for my channel.
They are a blast to catch for sure man. Gnarly animals.
I need to fish the Trinity. Looks like you can pitch a tent on a soft flat bank and set up for gar and catfish. It would make for a few good days in the outdoors.
Just be careful, most of it is private property. Your best bet to be legal is to find a sandbar island.
I get so hyped when you upload a video, Love your content!
Thanks!
awesome catch! would love to catch gar up here in Wisconsin. always see them roaming around while bass fishing. But don't have the right set-up for them.

We were using #5 4x strong treble hooks
+Robert Field thank you for your time n reply, thight lines.....
man these things have been torturing me. hooked a huge one in the creek amd fought him for a while but only have 12lb test. been watching your videos and stoked to get into a kayak myself. glad i watched this before chasing those big guys in a kayak im not familiar with.
They’re a blast but very hard to hook. Let em eat!
Nice Job. I hope to get after some kayak garfishing this summer. Atchafalaya River. Kinda nervous after watching your video. Did you guys use single hook or treble? Thanks
We used a single treble hook.
exhilarating video! you had me whoopin' and hollerin' from my couch!
Hahaha nice man, sounds like I did my job right then! Thanks for watching bro.
awesome vid those Gare look prehistoric enjoyed the vid thanks for the share
They are! Older than the dinosaurs. Crazy fish. Thanks for watching.
That's a damn good fish. Great video as always.
Thanks man!
Looks like that was a blast!
It was!
Hell yea brother this is the best video 2016!!! great job robert!
Thanks man! I appreciate that!
Great video Robert! What seat are you using in your Outback here?
That was a 2015 Jackson Kayak seat if I remember right. Fits like a glove.
Great Vid ROBERT those gar are tanks!!!
Thanks bro, those fish are crazy!
Should I use a common carp head or native fish to my pond because I have a problem with the gar killing a lot of fish in my pond?
I'd use something local to the water body you're fishing.
Great video man!
Thanks bro!
+Robert Field new subscriber im want to get into kayak fishing any tips
come to Mississippi and try it out. use the Asian carp as bait. alligator gar are making a return in many waters.
You know you're a badass when
1 you catch river monsters in toe shoes
2.have a carbon fiber kayak paddle
And trust me I'm not hating on the toe shoes... I had some and they're extremely practical
Haha thanks man! The paddle is from Accent Paddles, love 'em.
Robert, your videos are always awesome and have been a real inspiration for me. I got my first 6ft sturgeon from the yak the other day and he was towing me like that sailfish you caught, now I'm hooked on big game! Maybe you could check my sturgeon video out and let me know what you think.

It's the greatest sport out there! Thanks for the kind words brother.
love your content man gj catching them gars !
Thanks brother!
I've seen a photo from the early 1900s of a 15 footer caught from one of our local lakes in the Mississippi Delta.
I don't have a spinning reel that'll handle that, got an old penn senator though, what ya think on using that
I'm sure that'd work. Being in a kayak is much more forgiving on your gear, since your kayak will move before your rod or reel give usually.
Robert Field hard to get used to reeling in big fish in a kayak. Its like bow hunting vs rifle hunting
Oh that ending was priceless
Hahaha
since the comments where disabled on the offshore gone wrong part 3 was disabled, did you really have to leave that hook in that second sharks mouth ???
Hooks will rust out of a fishes mouth in a week or two
As I stated in the video description on that video, I had tried to remove the hook for about 5 minutes but couldn't get it out. Ultimately I decided that leaving the shark out of the water any longer would kill the fish. That hook rusted out long before you made this comment. Do you also use the metal/anker if you go on the sea
+Damien Mezenberg sometimes
That was pretty freakin' insane !!
Those fish are nuts!
those Gars are insane. Nice work dude.
Thanks bro!
why not use any musky rigs out of curiosity? Treble on the head and the tail?
I'm sure those would work also.
I love your videos man, and no offense but Josh from Peelin' Drag made you look like a newbie when he did this lol
Yeah, that's him. But either way I couldn't imagine messing with a giant gar like that in my kayak. Maybe one day
amazing. i wish i could do something like this. fancy taking on an apprentice? lol.
Haha we may be looking for interns for YakFish TV in the next 6 months!
+Robert Field calling dibs. seriously let me know haha
awsome-bob...enjoyed-watching...
Thanks Bobby!
wich rod were you using? I need a similar rod to pull out some groupers
I’m not sure, it was Bubba’s. Get something stiff for grouper. You probably want a conventional.
I fish all the time on my kayaks but I'd love to be able to catch something besides small mouth, and once a musky lol, it'd be awesome to do this
Get out there and chase something new man! Tons of fisheries to explore out there.
Dope ass video editing! Just subscribed!
Thanks Mark! New episodes every Tuesday at 6pm EST and some Thursdays.
Where was this at ? i live in west Texas and we have a bunch of alligator gar here
perfect vid bro! Where in The trinity is that?
Thanks man! Near Palestine, TX
what kind of kayak is this? could I get a link to where you bought it?
It's a hobie kayak pricey but really nice
+tylerguitar17 Yeah, couple thousand dollars. For sure not in my preferred price range. Thank you though.
The pedal drive kayaks are expensive. What's your budget?
Have you ever gar fished in Galveston
Nope, but there are some big ones out there!
+Robert Field thanks
Just wondering, are you by any chance a Field Staff Member of Bison?
I'm a Pro Staff member for Bison.
That looks like a blast!
Amazing video! Keep em coming.
Thanks bro!
What mounts were you using on the kayak for your GoPro's?
Those are Railblaza Camera Boom 600s. Use code YAKFISHTV for 15% off Railblaza stuff at www.yak-gear.com
dude ur one of the best Fisher man I've seen ima teen and I want to catch at least every kind of fish in the world
Thanks man! I want to try every fish out there too.
Last fish growled at you:)
Haha yeah she was over it.
Great! What an adventure.
Yes it was
11:09 Just walking my prehistoric monster fish lol!
Hahaha

Agreed, and like I said, that was Plan A. Sometimes ya gotta just roll with the punches. We contemplated cancelling the trip altogether. Glad we didn't!
Awesome job man!
Thanks bro!
What kayak do you recommend mostly or that you use most
I use the Hobie Outback the most, which is the one in this video.
what the music during the first caught and the third please ?
I honestly don't remember man, sorry. You can use the Shazaam app to find out.
justly, shazam doesn't recognize muscis..
Why don't you use a stinger hook setup, that way you can set the hook right away?
I love how u reply to comments!
You deserve so many more subscribers
Haha thanks man! I figure if I keep putting out decent videos, they will come!
love the videos. I'm a kayak fisherman too
Nice!
That noise it makes at 20:00 though
Haha yeahhhh
Can you get Gar like this in Nebraska?
I believe Nebraska has longnose and spotted gar, but I don't think they have alligator gar. I could be wrong. They used to be that far north, but they've been pressured for a long time.
I've coght aligater gar in iowa in the Mississippi
the old signature woo! hahaha
Hahahaha
great vid my friend , loving the music
Thanks for watching man!
What's the song at the end? After he removes the line from the engine?

Amazing fish man!
Thanks bro!
I seriously would be up for this!!! I'm jealous
They're a blast!
Dang your so close to 40k, I'm sitting here while you are at 39,999!
Haha it's crazy man, can't tell you how much I appreciate all the love. Keeps me motivated to keep producing vids.
Can you make a saltwater gear video
As in, tackle setups? That's tough because I use a wide variety of saltwater rigs, depending on what type of saltwater fishing I'm doing...
You should TOTALLY have more views for this man, this is awesome as fuck!
Haha thanks man! It's only been out a few weeks, hopefully it keeps growing! Thanks for watching bud.
Trying to mount the fish at the end lol
Hahaha
+Robert Field do u have a fishbrain? if so, what it is?
+Robert Field do u have a fishbrain? if so, what it is?

It's a Hobie Outback
You just gained a subscriber
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
+Robert Field how long did it actually take you to lure that fish to your Bait?
River Monsters 2.0 haha
Hahaha yep!
This vid is sick did u get bit there teeth r huge
Nope, didn't get bit luckily. I did cut my arm on the first big fish's gill plate when I was trying to get him out from under my kayak to hold him up. Everything on that fish will hurt you pretty much, haha.
Awesome vid
Thanks!
the native Indians made arrowheads out of there scales, from huge gar. nice video.
Yes they are!
How is the pelican catch 120??
I did a review on it in another video.
good shit man!!!!!
Thanks bro!
Trinity river is Texas?

Yes sir, alligator gar capital of the world.
Exactly 40,000 subs now:)
