The Homing Attack was the thing that made me really appreciate Classic Sonic in this game, and honestly it makes him just as fun as his modern counterpart in my opinion
Classic Sonic is over-hated nowadays. I’ve heard people genuinely express that they think modding a Modern Sonic model into Sonic Superstars would somehow make the game better. It’s like how the fanbase was over a decade ago when everyone hated Modern Sonic being in Sonic 4 but reversed. Nowadays, the fanbase is predominantly comprised of fans who grew up in the 2000s-2010s, so it makes sense they wouldn’t have a nostalgic connection to classic Sonic 😉…unless your first Sonic game was Sonic Generations like me. Then you’re pretty much as unbiased as they come to petty disputes such as this, because in a way I’m nostalgic for every iteration of Sonic, rather than just one or two. Perhaps this is the main reason why Sega decided to “remaster” (port) Sonic Generations; to unify the majority of the fanbase again because there’s something for everyone in Sonic X Shadow Generations.🙂
I’m so glad you mentioned the Classic Homing attack! It’s so fun to use, flows well, and if you miss time it (because I suck), you lose all of your speed. Anyway, great video GoobA 👍
Yeah people who just don’t like classic sonic definitely do miss out I still like modern more, but classic is also very fun to me. I think city escape maybe the best level for him
I like how even though it doesn't feel 1 to 1 with the real classic Sonic, it still feels close enough, smooth enough, and satisfying enough that muscle memory kicks in. For seasoned Sonic fans, you can press down and the jump button to spin dash, and REV UP your spin dash. Because that's how it was done. But for newer gamers, they'd expect it to be the action button like in the Adventure games, or like with the boost with the Modern games. So they'd use that instead, which made you able to just activate it, stop it, and activate it again on a dime. Hence being busted. The homing attack was something veterans always hated about Classic Sonic as it made sense in a 3D space but wasn't necessary in side scrolling and required almost no skill. But I never minded it. I didn't think it added much but it did add a variety of ways to travel. What you didn't mention was that you could also buy the insta-shield from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, where if you press jump a second time, you'd have a brief swish around Sonic that, if activated at the point of impact, acted both as a shield against danger AND as an attack for objects or enemies just inches away from actual impact, allowing you to still destroy them with the extra reach.
It’s my favorite Classic Sonic gameplay because the overpowered Spindash, Boost Reminiscent Level Design, Unlockable Homing Attack, and the Camera being pulled back enough so I can actually see what’s coming up (even Supermid has this issue).
I feel like making him more overpowered was a good thing bc it definitely makes him a lot like a different play style from a non Sonic fan perspective and it also makes classic feel as fast as modern which is a good thing Just like how GOOD the SATURN LOW POLY SONI-
This and Splash Dash’s Video explain really why I love the Classic Sonic half of Gens and how it enhances the experience overall. Sure he’s not accurate to the classics in terms of physics (especially the rolling when not spin dashing) but the physics he does have are kept in mind with the level designs. The levels too, their design keeps the classic level design fundamentals in mind being big and expansive with many paths, with top paths being faster and bottom paths being slower. The unlockable skills as well, the elemental shields, homing attack, insta shield, and the other small ones just add to the gameplay as well, being able to change up the gameplay in some and big ways are just awesome, super sonic as well but it’s underwhelming like cool but he’s not faster nor does he have a higher jump. Remixes are fantastic as well, I will defend the Planet Wisp remix as it’s like a Bad Future type of beat, showing the differing perspectives of Modern and Classic, Classic focused on the machinery and wanting to save the nature, while Modern focuses on the Beauty of all the nature even with the knowledge of the machinery in mind kind of using that nature as a driving goal to beat Eggman. Overall Classic Sonic while with some issues really shows to me why this part of the game enhances Gens for me and makes it my favorite game in the series and all time. And yet again another W Gdub vid
I agree Classic Sonic in Generations is way more fun than the modern part its just awesome I recently 100 percented Generations again to get ready for Sonic X Shadow Generations as well. The classic Sonic gameplay is what I would like to see more of in this game besides no rolling momentum it is my favorite gameplay for a 3d Sonic game.
Same I always liked Classic as well, would replay Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary, City Escape & Crisis City a whole lot for how fun they are to master
I like to think that Generations Classic Sonic’s gameplay and skills, particularly with the spin-dash and spin-dash jumps, makes this version of Sonic not much younger than SA1 Sonic. In SA1, Sonic can go insanely fast in stages because of his spin-dash, and we can do awesome spin-dash jumps. Generations Classic Sonic is like the 2D version of Adventure Sonic. You can even equip Generations Classic Sonic with a homing attack. So even though Generations Classic Sonic isn’t like Genesis version, one can argue that how Sonic Team handled Generations Classic Sonic is a perfect mid-evolution between Genesis Sonic and Dreamcast Sonic. Therefore, it fits within the timeline because Generations Classic Sonic should be after S3&K but before SA1.
I feel like the spindash was made so OP so that Classic Sonic wouldn't feel slow compared to Modern's boost, and I absolutly love that they made the decision.
The way I see is simple: Classic Sonic: earn speed through the level design and terrain Modern Sonic: earn perfection through perfect half second desisions and level memorization and classic sonic in gens follows the modern design philosophy with the OP spindash
I'm glad that you're able to just look at the classic gameplay as is and not use the "it's not like the original" argument. Yes, they didn't recreate the gameplay properly, but that's not a valid reason to call it bad. It has weight to what it is, but not whether it's good or not.
It's funny because I used to dislike Classic Sonic stages, always when I replayed Gens I always just replayed the Modern Stages and when I replayed the game from start in a new game, I disliked going through Classic stages, until I decided to S Rank my favorite stage from each Sonic game (in that case, when there was a game I wasn't the big fan of, I would pick the stage I "undisliked" the most out of all of them lol) and that included "alternate" gameplay styles if they were in the same game, so for SA2 I had to play a Mech Shooting and Treasure Hunting Stage, in Unleashed, I had to play a Werehog Stage, and in Gens I had to play as Classic Sonic, and for Classic Sonic, I picked City Escape, and later Speed Highway, and after I found out the opportunities to go fast and speedrun those stages, I became a big fan of Classic Sonic stages in Generations It actually made me like a lot more A LOT of those games, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Colors, the Werehog, Mech Shooting and Treasure Hunting, and of course Classic Sonic Of course, there's still things I'm not the biggest fan of... like 06, but anyway, the funny thing about Classic Sonic is that it isn't the first thing that sparkles in my mind when I want to replay Generations, but just seeing that gameplay of yours zooming through the stages, it makes me want to speedrun them again because it looks like they're slow and plataform-y, but they actually have a lot of opportunities for you to just zoom, not to mention the skills... God, Sonic Generations is such a good game
@@GDubA And Hopefully it seems that Shadow Generations (and Sonic x Shadow Generations as a whole) will keep that high standart OG Generations has, maybe in the future we'll get another mainline game in that same level with what Sonic Team learned from Sonic Frontiers and Sonic x Shadow Generations (and also perhaps Dream Team But it's true, lol, while I do love most of Sonic's catalogue of games, including many games hated by many (I might even say I'm one of the few Sonic fans who ACTUALLY likes Sonic), it's true that many of them are really flawed, Heroes, while I love it, it's still janky, 06, while I do appreciate the level design a lot, it's still broken, Forces, while I do like speedrunning it's levels, it's still boring, etc. Gens really does stand out as a really good solid Sonic game
It’s even better on PC with the Classic Sonic Improvement Mod, which allows you to gain speed through rolling like the genesis games. Hell, it even includes the drop dash, super peel-out, and CLASSIC FLIPPING KNUCKLES.
I love playing as classic sonic in generations, my brother always say he hates playing as him and prefers modern more cause hes fast and have more options than classic. Oh yea the homing attack is fun as hell too.
