Oakland Boogaloo: The Funk Freestyle Dance that Defined the Town’s Culture | If Cities Could Dance

- Oakland, California, home to the Black Panthers, also birthed the pioneering funk-driven freestyle dance Oakland Boogaloo, characterized by strong hits and poses. In the late 1960s and 1970s, before the emergence of hip hop, the city’s African American youth took inspiration from James Brown, the Temptations, Charlie Chaplin, cartoon characters, and sci-fi robots, and created a repertoire of original moves like the “Dime Stop,” the “Hit, the “Mack Pose” and “the Ditallion.” Youth in nearby San Francisco and Richmond soon developed variants of boogaloo, respectively known as strutting and robotting. Today, these techniques are collectively known as “the funk styles,” owing to their development during the funk era. Despite its pioneering status, Oakland boogaloo’s cultural contributions are little-known outside of Bay Area dance circles.
Meet OG Oakland boogaloo dancers who take us back to where the movement began and show us how they are passing the art form onto a new generation-bridging the gap between boogaloo, pop-locking and turf dancing.

📌Editor’s note:
We regret we incorrectly identified E. Vic Randolph "The Crowd Pleaser."
This episode touches on how the name “boogaloo” has been co-opted by an anti-government extremist group linked to murders in Oakland and Santa Cruz and riots in Minneapolis in 2020. The Oakland boogaloo dance community condemn this violence and the appropriation of their name.

I love my Town, didnt know boogaloo originated here, this definitely explain the origin of our dance culture.
I was 5 on the on the stage Dancing with Derek & Company in Campbell Village, and it was 46 years ago today on the 4 of July 1976. I remember I came home one day and my lil 3 year old Brother was like we went to the Gong Show Audition with Derek & Company, and they won. I was mad I wasn't there, but I was glad when I saw them on the Gong Show and I wanna say they won or they may have lost the the Legendary Cheryl Lyn if they were on the same show. If they were on the same show, she was the only one that could stop them. I can't clearly remember but if she wasn't then the won easy, and I'm thinking 🤔 they did!
Wow. Thanks for sharing this memory and so incredible that you shared a stage among legends.
That’s right don’t use our name in Vein!
Beautiful, simply beautiful!

Is the Memphis Jook style dance a part of Boogaloo dance? Looks so similar with added flair and style.
Jookin come from gangstawalk they just change the name, ogs of gangstawalk came from poplocking, they used king tut - waving - toyman and puppet and pointing and create some footwork moves (buck jumps) and emphasize on sliding gliding etc
LA got some explaining to do
Fresno too. They are famous for inventing top rocking. But Boogaloo is what allowed all of that to happen.
What do they need to explain about? It is not the EB movement’s fault that they wanted to promote their dancing to the world. All I listen to are jealous folks who got lucked out because they did not take the chance to promote themselves to the world, back in the 1970s. Besides, these guys have no merit, because they deny that Robert Shields was the one the OG Oakland Boogaloo inspired to be.

Le Twins takes this dance to another level with integrity intact..... what is pleasing to the eye is pleasing!!!!!!!! much respect to the OG's but this expression is not going anywhere and is in no way shape or form in any danger
Les Twins are not popping. Just put that in perspective….
does anyone know the song at 1:07? it’s such a vibe
I am also looking for that song and can't find it

Boogaloo boogie down productions
The advanced art of dodging bullets through dance movements...
Judging from the quality of their moves, they look pretty done to me.
These cats are in they late 60s this wasnt they best i seen them do better but you need to see the dudes in they 50s-20s on down they slay!!!
If only they put this much effort into being fathers, treating women decent and working honest jobs.
Did anyone find the white face at 3:42 racists? Cancel PBS for posting such racist images.
They had white paint just like in the old days when white men used to paint black faces
At that time, blacks were NOT allowed on stage; when the whites did it
??maybe The Black Messagers were making fun of that era??
