- Cartridges are expensive, but needed for obvious reasons + cleaning

Otherwise a very good printer, but a lot of things you need to be aware of "around" the printer as these videos have hopefully demonstrated.
I have a P900 as well. In the first weeks it produced strange things, I think the first couple of firmware versions weren't perfect. Since, I think, the third upgrade printing has been running okay.
And the lines: I had those, too. Every ten prints took one wrong copy. Two or three thin, dotted lines. Nothing helped, neither cleaning, nor nozzle check, nothing. I took the printer to the service, they found the issue finally. There's a transparent cable connected to the head which is moving here to there but the system checks the position and - if I'm correct - the printed patterns through the transparent cable. There was a little, very very tiny dirt on the cable, it got on the cable probably while setting the printer together. Sometimes the dirt blocked the beam from checking the patterns and it was leading to send false info to the print head.
The problem could be seen only on A3+ or A2 size prints because the little dirt got there only at that sizes. The cleaning brought 100% success.

Imagine that a little piece of dirt on an optical cable can cause something that you would first hand think would be the printing heads messing things up! I bought a much less advanced or expensive Epsom printer back in 2010. It worked pretty well, but ran out of ink pretty quickly, and the cartridges weren't always readily available. I haven't used it in years now since I found a really good local print shop. The quality is great and consistent and i never have to worry about running out of ink.

Hi Frederik, thanks for your review. I have my P900 for almost 2 years. Well, its my second P900, as the first was replaced under warranty because I had so many issues with it. The P900 is not built to the same standard as the earlier P800 and P600. I agree that the P900 makes excellent prints on certain papers. However, on some fine art papers the "pizza wheel" rollers that feed the paper make visible scratches down the print. There is a work around by feeding the paper in from the front using the "no roller" option but you lose about an inch of paper at each end. I also had wifi issues, but the direct cable connection has been flawless. And I also had a problem with a bent corner of a box of paper, but this is not the printers problem. Finally, I think the ink consumption is quite moderate and certainly uses much less ink in cleaning than equivalent Canon printers.
If you print on the papers such as Epson's Premium Semigloss, like you do, the printer is excellent. However, it is hard to recommend if you use fine art papers due to scratches.
Thank you for sharing! I have never owned a Canon printer, but based on posts and what I can find online, the printer uses more toner to clean itself than the Epson. I really like the results from the Epson.
I have had the P900 since January 2022. I'm still on my original cartridges. The grey and one black is running low. But I print mainly 4x6, 5x7 and an occasional 8.5x11. Overkill machine for my use but if prudent with your pictures, ink will last a long time. Also, when you do edge to edge printing, some ink spillage will form on the rollers, requiring more cleaning. I always have a white border around my print area. And that also saves ink! Most people are complaining about paper feed problems on this machine. I haven't had any but need to help the paper with a gentle push on the thicker papers.

Since I never use my Inkjet printers often enough that either I have do scheduled maintenance or the inks would dry up, I just gave them up decades ago and turned to dye-sub for photos and B&W & Color lasers for the rest instead.
For A4 size, I still use my Olympus P-400 printer that I bought in 2000 (with my Canon G1, before the Canon D30) and Canon Selphy printers for 4x6. Recently, I added a Fujifilm Instax Wide printer.

Just something you could try to solve the stopping halfway problem, besides a wired connection. I had the same, until I used the printers own wifi network. This Epson has the option of creation a local Wifi network on itself, which is for me a 100% stable connection. The only problem I have with this Epson is the sheetfeeder on the back. Sometimes it just won’t pick up the inserted paper (thick paper, 290 gms). After giving it a little push, the paper will be picked up. Other than that I’m very satisfied with it.

Thank you for this video, having viewed a few others from photographers' channels and Keith Cooper's channel, I think I'll head to the print shop. Yes, I want to see my photos printed but I don't need the frustration, the cost and waste of ink for maybe two dozen prints per year. Glædelig Jul og godt nytår!
Yes, there is probably a reason why print shops exist. It is an area that requires competences and know-how and time spend etc. Happy holidays to you too!
I haven't had any of these problems. I do print a nozzle check once a week (if not printing something else) and before large prints.
No problems with wifi neither - and I've only been using it with wifi.
I never print bordeless though, in order to avoid "overspray".

I also have this printer and experienced the same problem where it stops printing halfway through; the solution is to close all other applications and don't use the computer for anything while the print job is running; that fixed it for me. something to do with running out of memory

You have me beat. My Big Canon is only a 13 inch printer. I have a small Canon, that does 871/2 X 11 inch paper. It is one of the small Pixma Printers, and it does a decent job. I have had similar problems as You've described, when printing WiFi, and it has a lot to do with the signal, but make sure your Computer/ Laptop is not going into sleep mode. That can effect it.
I’m not too familiar with Epson. I do know that most All printers go through a cleaning/ Calibration cycle and if they are not used on a regular basis, it seems like the Ink gets low quicker? It can be fun and rewarding to print One’s own work, but it comes at a cost. If a person is going to print from Home/Studio, they have to ‘weigh’ the cost Vs benefit. I LOVE to print my own work, but it can be cost prohibitive at times. I have access to a local Pro shop that gets about $11.00/ Sq. Ft. Is how they figure it. They have a couple of HUGE in House printers.
Having said all that, EVERYONE should print at least a few of their shots, as Frederik so aptly states. “The proof is in the Print,” as they say. It WILL reveal things that are not so clear on a computer monitor. And the added benefit is having a hard copy of an image, that doesn’t need to be backed up, wont suffer from ‘Bit Rot,’ etc, and it is easily accessed and viewable.
Good printers are relatively affordable these days. The cost of replacement ink, as Frederik alluded to in this video, is just ridiculous. I guess it is the price we pay for the convenience of printing at Home.
Sorry about that poor delivery Frederik. I would have refused it. Try getting your paper from B&H, or Adorama. B&H actually put little cardboard corner protectors on my 13X19 papers. I only use Canon paper, in my Canon printers. I think they would ship to your location.

You did nothing wrong. My deliveries over here are usually by either UPS, or by FedEx. Half the time, merchants don’t pack the stuff right. B&H and Adorama are about the best. Adorama can be hit and miss. But B&H are almost always, almost ‘OCD,’ in their packaging and shipping?! I use one or two other online places, but that is about to change, due to their insipid packaging. Sending out electronic stuff in those little padded envelopes, or putting a lens, inside a box, with ZERO padding! Seriously!?!? 👎 It seems like it’s one more thing we all have to check/ worry about?
Good luck in the future. I’d advise everyone out there in YTube land to stock up on Ink/ Paper if possible, especially if you use Canon. Prices are supposed to go up!

Requires great courage to operate any expensive photo printer wirelessly; I certainly always ignore the wireless option. If you want the peace of mind the safest and securest for the best results is to connect the printer directly to computer using the supplied USB cable.

Thanks for sharing. Cost of ink is the main reason I decided to rely on printing labs rather than print at home. I wouldn't print as much to justify the costs involved.

I used to own Epson printers in the past. Stopped buying them years ago, they always have issues, especially with clogged heads. Reason I went with the Canon Prograph PRO-1000, and haven't looked back. The images that come out of this printer are fantastic. Have owned it for close to two years with no issues at all.
Epson's don't have clogged heads anymore.

@@frederikboving it looks like you are having issues "just saying" that do not exist with the Canon Prograph PRO-1000. Like I said, I OWNED Epson printers in the past, they all had issues, from nozzle clogging to paper feeding issues to over spray issues.
Remember that the printer "the printer itself" is the least expense when it comes to printing, ink and paper is what you should be looking at when it comes to cost effectiveness and printing. The last thing I need is the printer messing up the feed of the paper which results in wasted ink and paper, same with funky over spray.
To me a printer is a TOOL, if the tool causes issues with my finished product I will look to replace it with a tool that does not exhibit these issues.
I don't hate Epson, I actually like their papers, especially the Epson Exhibition Fiber paper "which is my go to paper" for the majority of my print work. And Epson Pro Luster paper is also great. Both papers work great with the Canon Prograph PRO-1000.
@@jfphotography69 Thank you Cybertec - I very much agree that a printer is a tool and it needs replacement if it does not deliver. And as you say, Canon could be the solution to avoid all the problems I have with the Epson, although most of my challenges seem to be "around" the printer and not the printer istelf. But right now I have invested a large amount in the Epson printer, and I will invest also some time to see if I can make it work. Hence this video about my process, in the hope that it may help others in the same situation. So I have not quite given up on Epson yet, but I may end up drawing the same conclusion as you. However, I am not there yet.
@@jfphotography69 canon printers do ewery 60 hour a auto cleaning cycle so there is no clogs..Epson is not doing it and if you not use it proper you will haw clogs
Nice review. Always good to take time and look back on experiences over a period of one year and not just superficial first impressions.
However, I am a bit puzzled that you cannot specify the cost of printing a bit more precisely. It would be really nice if you could simply give the number of prints and average size and the number of cartridges you had to buy. Or can anyone else that has the printer give any numbers?
For example my Canon pro-1000 used roughly 170ml on 200 prints and over this time filled a waste cartridge with 240ml of ink.
I have not really kept track, so that would not be a fact based answer. Then I would rather say it as it is: I don't know. It is complicated though. The consumption is very different subject to the cartridge color and you would have to keep track of all the colors (e.g. magenta changed from 88% full down to 32% full over 1000 prints) for each of the 10 cartridges. And then the color mix on the pictures also determines the consumption per cartridge, so I use a lot of black and grey because I shoot/edit to desaturated colors - another more colorful photographer may have a very different "drain" on the colorful cartridges. So even if I kept tabs, I'm afraid it would not be of much use.
@@frederikboving thank you for your detailed response! My point was: for Canon the use of ink for cleaning is more than for printing and you have to change the waste cartridge every 3 months and the full set of inks every couple of months so it is rather simple to adress the question even if not with 100% precision. Given the fact that after a year you cannot state the number of cartridges but would be required to refer to the fill levels of individual cartridges seems to indicate that your printer is by far not as thirsty as the Canon Pro-1000.
Check out red river paper. They did a study of ink usage and averaged it out. I can calculate my ink cost / sheet thanks to their study!

my P900 is new to me, but this is now my 4th unit. The 1st was new out of the box, "defective". The 2nd and 3rd units were refurb-s [not happy], also not working. The 4th unit I still have after 2 months. Ive not seen quality like this out of an inkjet, but my last real printer was in the 90s. If this one keeps working for the full warranty, ill be happy. The print cost per piece, is deceptive. If you are picky you will likely have to make 5 prints before you are happy.. Its still cheaper than having someone else make the prints

I would be interested in ink consumption again, or actually whether the printer should not be switched off to prevent automatic cleaning cycles (as with the Canon pro 1000). It would also be interesting if an image should/must be printed every day to prevent the printer nozzles from clogging? THX for the good and informativ video 🙂
Hi! Sorry, I do not keep track of my toner consumption (I print too little). I often leave my printer for weeks without printing, and it works like a charm after a long time of being idle. I think it self-identifies need for cleaning and starts a cleaning process if it deems necessary.
To avoid wasted prints with "lines" on the print, print a nozzle check (under the maintenance menu) on regular "office" paper (a4) before any print job and verify that the nozzles are unclogged; if clogged ... use the nozzle clean, also make sure that you have the correct media settings (paper type and thickness) to avoid head strikes on the paper, also never use WiFi for printing, USB or Ethernet is always the safest option ... ink prices are what they are and should not come as a surprise ... but for a full a2 print you figure a total usage of something like 2.5-3ml of total ink usage... any ink printer will need cleaning, it is inevitable... so it shouldn't come as a surprise :) and a print head clean uses a small amount of ink, you can't really see it on the ink level indicators. So all of these issues are basically not issues with this printer, but with printing in general. ink, print head cleaning, undamaged paper, proper data connection that doesn't interrupt the print... etc.

First Day when i recieved my printer. It did not want to print at all. So i made a phonecall to Epson. Some technician from USA rang me back. He entered my pc online to check my printer. Then he said that i have over 800 spam, crap , viruses, and troians. And he said. Pa me 300 dollars and I will sort out your printer

just a tip for some of you having this data flow problem over wifi. I experienced this problem connecting my Epson R3000 recently and I found the problem! It has to do with your wifi router and the network you chose 802,11 b/g/n. So I did a change in my router to use only b or g and not the n network and that worked fine for me. ever since then I can print any file size i want even A3+ up to 600 dpi which is around 400 mb.
So to be clear, disable the 802.11 n network in your router and use only the two older ones. That will do the trick probably!
Also I noticed that if you let the printer stay under power, let it go to the automatic sleep mode without turning the power of, the headsstay longer clean, 4 or 5 days without printing would no be any problem. If so it does get glogged up heads, try do a nozzle check on a daily bases, uses very little ink and keeps your nozzles fresh!

Hi¡ Do you leave the printer connected to the network? That is, the printer can automatically do its cleaning.
There are brands that if you leave the printer connected, it does its cleaning and it is cheaper than unplugging and plugging it back in, less ink is used.
The lines or white line that the printer can make can be corrected if this Epson 900 has the possibility of leaving ink on that white line again. There are brands of printers that detect the line and print ink again.
Don't use Wi-Fi. 👍👍
Thank you for sharing Luis! No, I don't leave my printer connected to the network, as I connect the printer directly to my PC via a USB cable. And I turn off the printer and store it when not in use, as I have a very small office where I cannot have a printer around unless I am printing!

Hi, very informative video and a printer I'm considering buying. Can you tell me roughly how many colour prints you get (assuming printing various sizes etc) before you have to replace an ink cartridge (starting from a point where all cartridges are full)?
Hi Alan, the honest answer is unfortunately that I don't keep tabs, so I am not able to answer your question. I do know however that the more seldom you print, the more ink is spent on cleaning / preparing the print heads when you start printing again, so one safe way to safe ink is to print on a regular basis without too long idle periods. Also, the printer in the startup phase does a lot of cleaning and uses a lot of the ink in the supplied cartridges.
Hi There. I'v this sc900 for a few months now. I do have different issues I would line to add. It. Does an excellent Job while using cut sheets. But it gives me a headache when I try front feed with cardboard or roll print. It is gettinG out of order. No matter what I do. Printer always telling me about paper jam (where There is NO papier jam at all) Im still trying to work it out

How about the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 or ET-8500 ? My Epson 3880 photo printer finally died on me instead I purchased the ET-8500 and I am delighted with the results. Thank you, your response is greatly appreciated.
Must admit that I have never tried those printers but the eco tank principle sounds really good both for the environment and for your wallet!
I own an 8550, it prints up to 13 x 19 only.
You can get great results for a tenth of the ink cost from the Ecotank 8550 from Epson. This uses dye ink rather than pigment so prints may fade over 50 years or so in direct light. Is that really an issue for most people? Is it even an issue if selling prints? EDIT Just realised that this is an A2 capable printer. The 8550 is ‘only’ an A3+ size.

could you tell me how many impressions it would make under normal conditions throughout the useful time of the p900 printer, and the maintenance box says to give 50 000 pages ,but it must not be true, you change the maintenance box by doing how many prints, I know that this varies depending on the A4, A3 or A2 size and if it is borderless worse, would you know how to clear my doubts, thank you...

Hello Fredrick, came across to your video while doing some research about this printer. I am 90% sure gonna get this one. I just have 1 doubt, it will be helpful if you can answer.
Is it work taking the after sales extended warranty? assuming if something happens to printer it will be cheaper or covered in the warranty. OR should I go with just the default 1 year warranty.
Uh, that's a tough question to answer, as it comes down to:
- the exact wording in the extended sales warranty
- the legislation in your country
- your risk appetite
Let me give an example: In Denmark where I live, we have 1 year guarantee on the product, but then we have an additional year of right to complain if the product does not work as intended (but the burden of proof is in the purchaser). It is probably not the same in all countries around the world, and hence the extended warranties are probably designed differently.
So my best advice is to study the extended warranty carefully, see what you get out of it, how it puts you in a better position than without it and then compare the price of the warranty with the total price of the printer in the light of your risk profile. You can maybe also find some independent institute that can assess the value of the warranty. But you have to do it locally as there are so many variances from country to country. Hope this was a little help. All the best!
I would go with extended warranty if the printhead and board are also included in it. Without these 2, it's waste of additional cost.

Hi Kermit, I have chosen to stay with Epson paper also! So far that has worked fine and I did try Illford Gallerie, but I did not find it to be any better than Epson.
Thanks for the video. Have you ran into an issue some of us are experiencing where a borderless print has a small white border on one side? I wonder if you have solved that somehow. I can't find any info online about this bug and how to fix it. I have only seen Epson's support site stating not to use borderless printing with custom papers. But I have the issue with standard paper sizes as well. Thanks!
Hi Rodney! My luck is often so that I run into every printer problem that has been invented, but the one you report is new to me! Have you tried to crop the image precisely so the dimensions match the size of the paper you are using? And if you print from LR, you get some useful preview of the print before you hit the print button - that may give you some hints as to what is going on. Hope this is helpful! All the best!
@@frederikboving Actually I found another video yesterday explaining it. It was my error. I was not using the "Expansion" and "Scale to Fit" options at all. Without those settings, there will always be a white border somewhere. Live and learn! Thanks for responding!

Hi Frederik, I have EPSON SC P906 and it suddenly won't let me print A2 size. The printer itself does have an option of A2 but when I try to print from my computer, there's no A2 option. Any advice for me? - Appreciate your help on this matter.
Hi, sounds like an annoying issue! Your wording "suddenly won't let me" leads me to believe you have been able to print A2 and then suddenly it stopped working? My best advice is to go back and see if you have changed anything on the computer? New version of operating system? New version of printer driver? If you are printing from Lightroom - has anything changed in there? Have you selected the page setup from where you print the image so that it is in conflict with the setting on the printer? Those are my best shots from the hip! Hope it gave a bit of help / inspiration.
i am evaluating, well cannon and epson. my epson 3880 stopped and i mean stopped printing 17x25 inch prints. but loves A2, bur Ikea only makes $19.00 frames for this photo done with 17x25 inch. A2 sucks…too small, now i need to make Mat board openings for their inexpensive frames.
Why would it just stop printing the larger size though? Can't you fix it with firmware or software? Is there a RIP you can try for it?

Thank you for the video. I just purchased a P900 two weeks ago and the maintenance box already needs replaced. I have only printed 5 prints total. The problem I am having is that the printer will not recognize the new maintenance box. I insert the new box and it just tells me to take it out and reinstall it over and over again. Have you seen this problem?
Also, ink is $44 per cartridge here in the US. Ouch! 😐
Hi, normally I take pride in running into all sorts of issues that no one has found before me, but the issue you report is need to me. My best advice is to see if you can spot any contacts between the printer and the bin and clean them carefully. Hope you find a solution 💪
@@frederikboving Thank you for the reply. In a very odd twist, when I turned the printer on this morning, the message to take out and reinstall the maintenance box was gone. I just tried printing a 17x22 print and was successful. I have no idea why it behaved this way, hopefully it never does so again as it had me very worried. I did reach out to Epson before this issue corrected itself, they replied with a few follow up questions. I will let them know on Monday what happened.

Hi, sorry, I am not. I simply do not keep a track record of pages printed and the cartridges changed. Also prices in Denmark are a bit off the chart, so I don't think it would be very helpful even if I could!
Your 1st issue is the reason why so many people refill, and Ecotanks selling like hot cakes. Professionals can also pass the cost to the customer.
Your 2nd issue is pretty common and you should always use a cable connection for such an expensive operation.
2nd point: agreed. 1st point: Yes. I had some really bad experience with refills some years back on a different printer, so I promised myself I would not go down that road again. Have you seen the epson l8181? Much cheaper and ink body refillable but maybe the print quality is not as good.
Hi Bill, no I have not tried that Epson model. Some years back I tried a refillable solution, and it was not a big success. But thinks may have improved since then 🙂
What are your expenses working with this printer? How much can one expect to spend on up keep
It's complicated to keep track of: the printer has 10 different cartridges (colors) and they all differ a bit in price. And the ink usage per cartridge depends on the images you print, so you would need to keep an eye out for the use of all 10 different cartridges to estimate the ink consumption. And it would be an estimate as you would have to assess how much each cartridge had dropped after say 1000 prints.
But I will say this: Printing is expensive. Both in terms of paper and ink. The 10 cartridges to fill up the the D900 will set you back around 1/3 of the price of the entire printer. And in addition comes paper. So unless you plan to to a massive amount of printing my advice is: don't. Use someone specialised in printing to do your prints. There are agencies specialised in this and also many of the more well established professional photographers have people who know how to print. And if you are lucky, they can also help with a bit of post processing if you want to. I know this is not welcome advice when your fingers are inching to go guy some new gadget in the shape of a printer, but I have been there, seen it and done it, and based on my experience, this is my advice.
I just got my P900 and got the problem of partial printing (using a paper roll). I tried several times and got weird printing sizes, cropping, etc. I was pronting from photoshop. Then I tried to print from Epson Print Layout and the problem disappeard.

Sorry to hear that. Try the following:
(1) Make sure the printer driver is the printer driver from the vendor and not the one that windows installs automatically. If you have a Epson printer, go to the Epson homepage and download the specific driver for your printer.
(2) If a lot of programs are running on your computer, make sure to close them down so the computer only has to deal with the printing. If many applications are open at the same time, this could stress the computer so it cannot feed the printer sufficiently fast.

what inks do this use? Is Epson UltraChrome DS inks cheaper
It uses 10 different 50ml cartridges. One example is the light grey named T47A9. They are expensive - filling up the printer from scratch is 1/3 of the price of the printer. Dunno about the
UltraChrome.
Can this do two-sided printing? If so, how can I set it up?
I have never tried. It only has one printing head, so you would have to make the paper pass 2 times. Not sure how that is done exactly.

@@frederikboving I get it,laser is also quite and investment at once …As an illustrator the Epson ET-8550 seems a pretty good alternate choice ,ink tank is said to be much cheaper than any cartridge model : 38 € for the whole set of 4 colours (that lasts over a year) instead of 39 for 1 colour .Limited to A3 ,but I might turn to pros for bigger format prints

Hi, no new issues! I am very happy with the printer! Only thing is not to have long intervals where the printer is idle as it will lead the printer to start self cleaning which is expensive in terms of ink! Otherwise all good! 👍

this WIFI issue happened to me also on other of my Epson printer (L-1800), I use cable from that time..
The stripes - maintance and cleaning does not help. Someone has video, when resolve the problem with highest quality prints...Also did not resolve my issue... Its just a random behaviour, did not figure it out..

Thank you for your video. This printer is a miscarriage. After Epson Service exchanged my first P900, the second one immediately shows similar problems. The front flap cannot be closed, a replacement part was installed in the printer so that the feed mechanism no longer curves forward (serial error). With both printers, the front paper feed is an absolute disaster. The mechanism started to jam early. It refused to feed paper and so on and so forth. The rear paper feed likes to leave marks on the paper, the paper sometimes gets smudged, and almost always the edge is damaged (as shown in the video). Currently, the P900 is once again in repair. Fortunately, I have a service contract. I exchanged it for a Canon IPF-1000 Pro. It's solidly made and doesn't rattle. It also spares me the absurd squeaking noises when printing (you can only hear the air blower that helps to guide the paper). The Canon works quietly and reliably. It weighs three times more than the P900 but is also three times better made.
I have other Epson printers for the office. Nothing rattles and they work flawlessly. I will never understand why a big brand like Epson would launch a product like the P900.
Thank you for sharing- I am glad to report that although I have many issues with using the printer, I have never experienced the problems you describe. And I have done a fair amount of printing on this printer, mainly using the rear feeder for A2 and A3. But I guess it must come down to sample variations.
The same problem. The worst front feeder ever in P900! The engineer who designed this should be fired.
I have the P900, great printer with his own issues that you can solve just by getting used to it, for example the last 2cm of the A2 prints are displaced, I guess that’s a thing that you can help with a little support of your own hands 😅
But the worst thing is the consumption, it’s crazy how much ink the printer eats, like a thirsty vampire 🧛🏻♀️ do you recommend use some other inks, or only the epson original ones?
Hi, many years ago I tried to work with off-brand ink (it was a different printer). It did not turn out well. Ever since, I have simply paid the premium of using original cartridges. The Epson is crazy expensive - filling up the printer from scratch is like 35% of the price for a new printer! I think they have a new series where you keep the head and only change the ink. That is a lot less expensive and probably has a more acceptable footprint. So for my next printer, I will look in that direction.

Nope. The Epson was on offer back when I bought it and it seemed to get decent reviews so I went for it and never looked back.
You can use 3rd party inks and refill them, you will save about 90% on ink. takes a little research, but it's worth it!!!

I’m using this printer meanwhile for 2 years. Ink consumption is a real improvement over my Canon Pro-1 I had beforehand. But the P900 has also many issues: Overall quality is far behind Canon, paper feeders at front/rear/roll are unreliable. Pizza Wheel Marks. Bronzing effects on Baryta papers with B&W prints. I wish for a Canon Pro-1000 with the ink consumption of the P900. Let’s wait for the Pro-1000 successor…

Some say Canon. Others say: stay clear of printers and ask an agency to do your printing.
It all depends on what your goal is with printing, if you're just printing for your own enjoyment and the occasional sale, get the P700 (A3+) or the P900 or a comparative Canon (Pro-100 I think is the equivalent)... they are good printers but have the same pitfalls as any other inkjet printer, even the large commercial ones P7500, P9000 suffer clogged heads etc. .... it is just the nature of the beast so to speak...
I'm using third party ink and it costs $40/Liter each color that I could print like crazy without emptying the pocket with original ink cartridge.
The colors output of the 3rd party inks and OEM aren't distinguishable.
It comes with the added cost of chip reseter and refillable cartridge, but it is a one time cost.
Thanks for sharing! I tried 3rd party ink with a HP printer some years back, and I do not recall it being very successful. Probably down to my lack of skills. Since then I have stayed with brand ink and payed an overprice for the comfort.

I doubt that you can get third party inks for the P900. Epson is getting pretty smart about this.
@@gosman949 P900 is pretty new to the market with new ink type. Third party ink makers won't produce small niche market compatible ink except several other model also use it. Anyways, a few vendors have it on Alibaba.
@@Technobby Farbenwerk in Germany has 3rd Ink for the P900. I have not checked it, but they are a well known company in this area providing adapted ICC profiles etc.

you already printed the print history count report, i did and it says total pages 130, prints equivalent to A2 170 and prints equivalent to A4 870, i don't understand this report, if you already printed this history report explain to me, why if you say total number of pages 130 and then equivalent to A2 170 and A4 870 these accounts don't add up, if you can clarify, or print this history of impressions made and see if you match these numbers right ok thanks...
Hi, it does not make sense to me either. I think A2 is 4 times as big as A4, so 4x170=680 and not 870. And the manual for the P900 does not give any explanation.

So is this printer worth the money or should one go for the Canon PRO 1000, also do the cartridges dry out if you do not use the printer for a month or more.
The cartridges do not dry out. IMHO you need to do a lot of printing to justify a printer like this and it is expensive in terms of both paper and ink. Unless you print a lot, I'd start out printing via an agency. Dunno about the Canon printer but there are many that seem happy with the print it produces.

Aunque es una belleza en calidad de impresión, siempre termina con el mismo problema: Cabezales tapados.
Mientras Epson no desarrolle la opción de hacer limpieza de cabezales a un unico color, estará destinada a ser un dolor de cabeza para el consumidor. No sirve de nada que el sistema te diga cual es el cabezal tapado, si al estar corriendo la función de limpieza, estás consumiendo todos los colores que no están tapados. Actualmente tengo 2 cabezales tapados, y cada que trato de limpiarlos, el resto de las tintas se van reduciendo al punto de acercarse a su fin.
Si esto sucede, daré por perdida mi impresora ya que el servicio no es nada económico, y eso implica volver a comprar todos los cartuchos de tinta. Sin olvidar el factor tiempo... Triste situación.
Yep, the heads will easily get cluttered if you don't use the printer very frequently- if you use it often, I find it performs very well but the issue you raise is a very valid one. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
The problem is a vicious circle.
If you use the printer, everything will be fine.
If you don't use the printer, (because the workflow doesn't demand it) you have to print and waste ink to keep everything running smoothly.
If you have to clean the heads, you have to spend ink cleaning ALL the heads, even if the system tells you that only one head is clogged. I´m Graphic designer, and I have suffered this problem with all Epson ink printers.@@frederikboving

You live in Europe, they sell self refillable third party inks over there. The US doesn't allow that over here, you're lucky.
Camera gear in general is much more expensive in EU than it is in US (we envy the prices listed in B&H), so in total I think being US based has a cost advantage.

@@frederikboving Actually you need to print small volumes with this, if you print a LOT (with a mind to sell, or do print services for others) you should really get the Epson P5000, it is a 17" (same size as the P900) spindle printer (also prints pre-cut sheets ofc) inks prices pr. ml is halved and prices on paper on roll vs. cut sheets are about 15-20% lower as well (the P5000 has an integrated cutter as well) paper on a roll does have some disadvantages also... mainly that when you get the finished print, it can still be slightly curled and needs to be flattened ... unless it is mounted in a frame etc. straight away)
So when you want to sell A2 format plexiglass prints for 30 euro you will basically lose a Margin. Not worth doing this business. They should sell it for 600 euro and inkt cardridges should be 100 in total. Even 3D printers are cheaper.
Agreed - it is difficult to make a good business from printing images.
3D Printers and Inkjet printers cannot be directly compared, 3D printers are simpler mechanically. And at 1100€ and half of that (or more) being the value of the ink, the printer itself is not that expensive. Now I am not saying that Epson, Canon, et. al. isn't making a vast profit on their inks, the solution there is to buy the P5000 or upwards, and with that you get bigger cartridges at lower prices pr. ml of ink, the initial cost of the printer is bigger, but the cost breaks down like this (in my local currency) P900: 9,3NOK/ml vs. the P5000: 5.24NOK/ml so it 1/2 the cost pr. ml .... the economy of scale is at play as well... (and the reduction in cost is mirrored in any location/currency as well)... the P900 is an enthusiast printer, not one that minted on commercial use... it is the stepping stone into larger prints (IMO)

Looks like an Epson printer is not recommendable. Those things should not happen and Canon is more reliable in this regards.
I would beg to differ- the Epson is a very nice printer. The issues I report are all "around" the printer and not the printer as such 🙂
