Lyrics
There was a time when I tried to hold the ocean in my fists - when I mistook the language for
the light. There was a tightness that gripped my soul and bubbled at my wrists, and choked me
within inches of my life. But now I’m letting go, and I can finally breathe - I can finally breathe.
And my hands are open, reaching out - I’m learning how to live with doubt - I’m learning how to
lean into the grey. ‘Cause I’ve had enough of black and white - I’ll find another way - and I will
lean into the grey. I’ll lean into the grey. There was a time when I tried to bind and bottle up the
sea - I tried to hide my heart inside my head. There was a maze of these vicious lines that cut
through everything - I pulled against them till my body bled. I will find another way - and I will
lean into the grey.

This song is brilliant specifically in it's lyrical development. We love putting things into boxes thinking that we can fully grasp them, but it's like trying to hold the ocean in your fist. The world is a lot more grey than we like to think and that's scary. Thrice once again got me thinking.
I love this band so much.
The only band who's new music has never disappointed.
Mess Music TV They're not the ONLY who's new disappoints
The new music is by far better than the old stuff.
depends what albums you consider "old"
yea dude listen to more music
Breaking Benjamin's new stuff didnt disappoint.
Holy hell. It’s got that material control feel in the riffs. I love it.
Can’t wait to rotate these albums together
I am a Satanist, yet I find more of a personal connection with the teachings of Jesus than my Christian relatives and friends, and this song speaks to that strange struggle I feel.
This deserves no likes..... But know your loved. Surrender to God and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. I have doubts your an actual Satanist. You having those feelings is God reaching out to you. Satan already lost.... Why follow him down?
Idk what this song is about, but to me: it's about learning that you can't control everything, and your opinions aren't always 100% right. No matter how stubborn you are, change is a reality. And nothing is absolute. We have to learn to lean into the grey areas of life. Because black and white are too constricting to contain true happiness. We have to grow and evolve to be relevant, and remain that way.
Thrice, my all time FAVORITE BAND... These guys have never put out anything but GREATNESS. So glad their hiatus is done & they're back to making amazing new music together! I vow not to miss seeing them live this time around!
This partnership (Thrice and Epitaph) should have happed years ago, but better late than never.
Thrice! The only band that never seems to disappoint
YES!!! I live for this band!! Couldn't show my support fast enough!
This is awesome. It's crazy how many Thrice albums have come out and each still has its own sound and evolves more than the one before it. We've gone from Identity Crisis to this and it's amazing.
Not the band we deserve but the band we need.
This song couldn't of come out at better time then now for me. Thank you thrice.
Thrice always changes their sound with every album, but they are still thrice. Sounds like a more aggressive fast paced feel if TBEITBN. It's awesome.
Thrice never fails to put into melody where I'm at in my spiritual walk with God. Thank you, Thrice, so much for making the best musical art and penning such poetic revelations.
ANOTHER Thrice classic to add to my collection. Can't wait to listen to the whole album.
I'm not surprised that it's not disappointing. Thrice always brings out the best.👌
Thrice can't write bad choruses
Thrice can't write a bad song.
I was just thinking this. The art of choruses are lost with so many bands but thrice is out here making classics
Definitely 100%!
Koen v. Meijel you're Dutch??? Cause I am
Wrote a bad one here
Waiting for the new album !!
The message in this song to me is so important. It's how I've been living my life starting this year and it's been so liberating. Lean into the grey. ✌️
This band can't miss.
I don't think I could ever get tired of this song. I've had it on repeat for like 4 days now...
As is tradition - Thrice can do no wrong. That killer bass and guitar riff in the intro are too good ♥
can't wait to see them in berlin in 2 weeks..
everytime i'm learning something in life, thrice makes a song about it. there couldn't be anything more perfect
He's struggling with is faith and people that he lives with on a daily basis. I like this song cause he's honest about it. I wish more people were more honest. Don't confuse his lyrics with your life. This is his own struggle.
Oh my goodness... Dustin I can't get past how inspired of a lyricist you have become... What a treasure Thrice is... Bless you guys and thank you!
feels like TBEITBN came out yesterday, can't wait for more new music!
Nah it sounds more like HPVQVCLMNOP
THRICE!!!
Pennywise I'd let you.
Pennywise Sure, I wouldn't mind
Princess Red Got Snap?
And can u be my wife @princess red 😛😜😙😘
Hay Shawty! Yo on that snapchizzle girl? You thicker than a snicker gurrrrl. I'll knock the stuffin off that Egg McMuffin.
Dustin has been expanding and rethinking a lot of his views after a very toxic experience at the mega church.
I feel like this song is about trying to stay positive and hopeful while allowing yourself to be skeptical.
SketchaMPM what toxic experience?
Dustin has also stated in an interview that he no longer believes the Bible to be inerrant, so it could also be finding a new way to look at the Bible
Scott Ulrich Do you happen to have a link to that interview?
Mr Pingu m.soundcloud.com/leadsingersyndrome/episode103
Here’s the link. Not sure where he mentions it exactly, but it’s actually a really good interview overall
Scott Ulrich, reading through different posts on DKs Twitter, I'm not so sure that is where he stops with his questioning of scripture. He almost seems to have lost faith altogether...
I have grown with this band. Each album speaks to me at that point in my life. From Identity Crisis and Illusion of Safety to To Be Everywhere is to Be Nowhere. I've missed several opportunities to see them live. I feel like Dustin is speaking to the fact that his religion is giving way to enlightenment. I could be wrong but that is how I interpret it.
You can always count on these guys to make good and honest music. Thank you, Thrice!
The more I listen the more I like. This has been the same with everything Thrice has done. Songs that I didn't like, I now love and songs that I loved I now adore.
I can finally breathe...
And I love this song. 🎶
It’s so interesting to see this very real/human wrestling in musical form with huge concepts like faith in Thrice’s songs. Furthermore, it’s super cool to see Dustin’s personal internal journey/struggles and progression as he’s aged and learned more about life going back to the Artist in the Ambulance era of their catalog up to now. It’s so organic and I don’t see anyone being more honest coming from a Christian worldview in music today that is still going this strong and still breaking ground. It’s incredible. 💪
V1K3N I wouldn't call Dustin a Christian artist at this point. He seems to have abandoned many fundamental tenants of scripture for a liberal type worldview. Just my thoughts.
stephen allen definitely! I didn’t call him a Christian artist though. He’s never claimed that. I think he has been operating historically in a Christian worldview in his writing though for sure. He’s been open about that and I talked with him about this before at a show in Pomona.
V1K3N just curious, what did you guys talk about?
Alfian Banjaransari This was a couple years ago so don’t quote me, but I asked him about how he developed his voice and he we talked about that a bit. He told me he developed his voice naturally over time through practice. We also talked about Thrice discography over all and about certain song meanings and verses/books they are based on of several of songs on Beggars which was cool. I asked him how into prog bands he was and asked him if he was into bands like Oceansize whom I love and he said he never heard of them haha. He said he’s the least prog influenced of all the guys in Thrice which was interesting. He’s more into folk rock/singer-songwriters like father John misty/ Arcade Fire/etc. if I remember correctly. That’s all I can really remember honestly. Hope that answers your question.
Noah Smits sorry I meant progressive music like rock and metal.
Rifffff is fire. Thrice are the realest rockers out there
I like it when this band puts sounds into my brain.
this band just keeps getting better
Gimme a break.
They peaked in 2003 buddy.
edgy responses guys keep it up
lol definitely not. but great song anyways.
I love Thrice, but I wouldnt go that far. Almost everyones old stuff, is better than their new. Thrice is better than 90% of bands though. Very underrated
Thrice + Epitaph Records = Love.
Thank you guys!
All respect for this band! ❤️👊🏻🤘🏻
Amazing. As a lapsed Catholic, these lyrics really hit home
Your' music has helped me so much. I love it. As an artist and recovering addict I love y'all ❤️🔥
Thrice is my favorite band of all time!
Thrice for life. Rocks as always.
I didn't know I needed this
I relate, I relate.
I'm proud to say
I can finally breathe again.
can't believe it's new thrice time already!
megustale69 right? Still feels like TBEITBN just came out. I can’t wait for more though!
CJSchecter96 I think TBEITBN feels new still because their hiatus felt like an eternity haha at least for me
Thrice never disappoints. My favorite band for a reason. :)
When that chorus hita, nothing else matters.
once again my favorite band of all time kills it.
Omg!!!! Yes!!!! I'm excited we got a new track from Thrice!!!
One of the best bands out there.
I feel like their music is the soundtrack to my life!
The opening riff has a very Fire album off Alchemy Index. Love it!
I fucking love these guys. I grew up sneaking out to see them at chain reaction before they were famous. Only them and RHCP's, music has never disappointed me. Please come back to Denver so i dont have to buy another ticket home to see you!!!
I've listened to this song like 20 times already. Such a great tune. Thrice with some hints of he is legend style to it. Fuckin rocks.
I am ecstatic about Thrice coming to Epitaph!
This is a very powerful song. This will definitely will become a hymn for 2018, specially because of its intelligently nuanced subtext that cuts deep through political and cultural polarization.
Thrice never disappoints!
Very excited for the full album! Even though TBEITBN took years of waiting through a hiatus, I feel I'm just as stoked for this one!
😭Why/how does Thrice always put my feelings into a song ???!!!
Swear im hearing some Converge in those guitar riffs, fucking excellent! Keep rocking guys, Thrice never dissapoints.
Thrice is like a fine wine
YES
Still one of my favorite bands. Stoked for a new album!
This is amazing
holy shit this song makes me cry like the little boy i used to be.. thanks for this
Seeing these guys in November. Can't wait!
I love how raw this is
Thrice forever ❤ this song is nails 🔥🔥🔥
That guitar riff is something else.
When I heard this song on the radio, I thought it was Beartooth but regardless I found a new band and they're awesome!!
This band is embedded in my soul all songs and release dates and lyrics conspire in my life. It gives me chills. I've met Dustin and it was some spiritual stuff. This band has always been amazing. The creative style and sound should be more appreciate. Dustin sings his soul while teppei is jamming out some of the most awesome riffs if you really listen to them, the whole band is awesome they play with such grace even live.
I think these lyrics are super catchy because they can easily be applied to different aspects found through just living your own life. Be interesting to find the inspiration that moved Thrice to write them for their particular case.
Wow, Riley stepping up to the plate and levelling up his drum skill yet again reminds me a bit of At The Drive In. I love how the Breckenridge brothers between bass and drums dominate the mix, it's beautiful. Overall the mix reminds me of the work done on Major/Minor. You can just tell this has Teppei's production work all over it, we haven't heard this raw sound in a long time. Hoping the rest of the album has that Major/Minor feel about it.
This should be the anthem for Grey Force Masters.
THANK YOU FOR COMING BACK.
Always so catchy. They make me like new music again.
LOVE IT! Thrice never disappoints!
Alright, time for an Epitaph Records tour with Thrice, Every Time I Die, Converge, and Touche Amore.
Jason LovesABR that just made me wet and I don't even own a vagina
Kyle Taylor I have been saying for ages for ETID and Converge to tour together and now this is their time or at least Converge to give up their slot to headline for Thrice to take.
Dude you're speaking my soul. The notion of any of those two bands together make a me giddy. All 3 would be unthinkable. They all seem to have some connections and mutual respect too. No reason not to. We should start a petition for this thing
Kyle Taylor hahaha yes! Or Defeater could join them. Haven't heard from them in some time.
You had me at ETID.
Not sure how I feel about the lyrics but definitely excited about a new album! I've been jamming identity crisis lately. These guys can play the hell outa any sound.
what a lyrics. and music. that's it.
thrice just keeps evolving
not once, not twice, but *thrice*
jasmine that's right Strawberry!
Fookin' Caesar
First time listening to this band but I guess I already LOVE IT!
Misha o-o you hoy reaserch yo do. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 You Will love them.
Well I'm thinkink about visiting one of their shows in cologne ;) I looove the instrumentals and vocals so much
I've listened to this song not once or twice or thrice... But three times.
This Song is Realy good have been listening to you Guys sins 2015
Damn I gonna need to check out more from these guys
i'd recommend vheissu or the alchemy index
Pretty much every album is different, so have fun with that. Their last album is pretty solid and I’m a fan of the stripped down style of Beggars.
Check out Vhiessu. Then work Backwards (Artist and the Ambulance and Illusion of Safety) and Forwards (Beggars, Major Minor, To Be Everyhwere is No Where). The albums that precede Vhiessu are very different, but they basically redefined an entire sub-genre of punk music.
D3THPUNK you won’t be disappointed! Their albums are all different but epic in their own right! This song to me is reminiscent of something off Beggars or Major/Minor.
You've got a lot to check out then. I don't understand why these guys have always been under the radar.
Thrice always delivers. No fucking around. Check their unplugged songs too!
This should be on trending
Sensacional ! Otima banda.
This Riff at the start... And after, those lines of Dustin... Wow.
I love Thrice and have been a fan since 2000. They cannot write bad music, however, upon first listen, this song seems very simple compared to pretty much everything else they've put out. I guess I will just have to listen again! lol I hope their other songs are more complex like their older music and they are not watering themselves down to appeal to the masses. Doesn't seem like something they would do considering their integrity and passion, so maybe this was chosen as a single bc it is more simple in order to attract new listeners. Just my opinion. Thrice will forever be one of my fave bands. Cannot wait to hear more! I hope I can see these guys in November!
A new song by Thrice!? Omg I've been waiting for this moment! ❤
Old thrice was good new thrice is legendary!
This kicks all sorts of ass; I especially love the Mastodon-ish guitar lines!
Yeah I was thinking along the lines of that riff from Converge - Sadness Comes Home too
Yet another amazing song... 👏👏👏
Ae finalmente saiu esse single maravilhoso q musica pessoas!! Mds
This band never disappoints man 🙂
Can even describe how important is this band for me.
Looks like they`re still moving in the direction marked on TBEITBN which is awesome. It`s astounding how they`re writing such catchy songs being so minimalistic at production and song-structure aspects.
Can’t stop listen this track
can't wait for this album!!!!!
YESSSS. This song slams. Hell yeah.
I won't lie. TBEITBN was a huge letdown for me when I first heard it. I had never been disappointed with a Thrice album until that one. I stopped listening to it after a month. Then about 4 months later on a 3 hour drive, I gave it another shot. I listened to the album on repeat for the entire trip, and it was strange how the events that had happened to me in those four months affected my outlook on the album. I related to it so much more, and now it's closely becoming my second favorite album (Major/Minor saved my life, so that will forever be my number one). I think Thrice's music speaks to a lot of people at different parts of their lives. I see a lot of people talk trash about their new music, and that's okay, cuz that's their opinion, but maybe in a year or some time, they might relate to it. Music is highly subjective, and major events in our lives determine how we interpret each song. Whether or not 'The Grey' is about Dustin's faith is pretty irrelevant to me because I can relate it to something else that's significant in my life, and I think almost all Thrice songs are that way. Their music lets you be creative with it. And that's why they'll always be my favorite band.
