*__*Hey Sega Lord and everyone, I'm Jason_* !* I had the pleasure of producing 12 songs for the soundtrack on Hotshot Racing! I grew up in the arcades in the '80s and '90s and to be able to really put that inspiration into the music was a dream come true for me. I even went as far as to use gear from the late '80s and early '90s for authentic sounds that would have been used on video game OST's back then. It's for sure a hybrid OST. I am SO happy to see everyone enjoying the game and the music.
I am sorry none of the songs spoke to you, but I will take it as a major compliment to even be compared to my all-time hero songs in Daytona and Outrun. I began writing music for Hotshot in 2016, so this is a LONG time coming for everyone at SUMO, Lucky Mountain, and Curve! Superficially it seems a good game, but an hour in i have to say that the kart racing like rubber banding ruins it for me. Originally it was planned for the game to have weapons, but then it was changed in a more conventional racing game. Pity the AI wasn't changed as well.

I've always loved the 'low poly' style of 3D graphics - there's a solidity to it that more modern graphics can't always match. It was a shame that Model 1 games were so relatively short lived. I think Mario Kart would have been amazing in this style!

Yeah, This is what stops me from buying this game and others like it. They miss one of the key points in old arcade racers, the tracks are meant to make you feel like you're on a wild roller coaster ride and yet these homage games tend to have very flat track designs. :(

Flat tracks are cool and all but even in the 90s we seen lots of great racing games that added tracks with elevation to them. The later ridge racer series did that and it really made the game amazing.

This is my favourite style of racer. I love Horizon Chase Turbo and have been playing it for years and also buying all re-releases of Outrun while wishing Top Gear series would get released again.

I hear a lot of people complain about the rubber band AI, but there is a boost system in this game that fills up when you drift and the slipstream system. The slipstream is actually pretty aggressive, you can get a LOT of speed just by following another car from a very generous distance and overpass them, and this is basically required to win. So either the AI uses those two systems really well to keep up with the player, or there's actual rubber banding that can be mitigated by using the boost and slipstream. In either case, I have felt that races feel challenging without feeling unfair, as although other cars can overtake me on a straight line, so can I.

The bots are excessively aggressive and that's not acceptable in any way, but it explains why they are: This game was originally meant to be a combat racing title and for some reason they left it in. 😑

​@PhilipMarcYT I was so hyped for this one man, I got it on PC shortly after launch and was furious with the AI constantly doing pit maneuver at just about every corner whilst I was trying to correct my angle in a drift. This works in a demolition or combat type racing game, (heck, maybe even a sim) when speeds are relatively low and the emphasis is to take out as many of the opponents to get a competitive edge, but not in an arcade racer of this type where you are meant to keep your speed and momentum going (flow state). The physics engine shouldn't allow the player's car to bounce up and be blown away like an aluminum soda can straight into the nearest wall, meanwhile the AI racers are completely unfazed when hit directly or ran off into a wall by the player's car like they are under some unmoveable force or set of rules that don't abide to you (you could successfully pit/shunt AI cars in Daytona USA). They could have just had the animation for a car bounce or bump like in Scud Race or OutRun 2 for spectacle but kept the collision detection the same as if the car was driving normally on its original set path keeping the gameplay more grounded so to speak. Once you're bumped there is no time to counter or correct your angle and since it happens so often you are basically penalized for using a fundamental mechanic, this isn't a lack of skill because I've been playing Daytona USA and OutRun 2 for years and have never experienced any of this cheapness to this calibur once in those other games.

This is definitively a love letter to our childhood and adolescence. I can't get tired of this type of racers, they look so timeless for me. Oh yes, I love my Gran Turismo games but I grew with Outrun, Virtua Racing and Daytona USA, so how could I give the cold shoulder to a good game like this? It really is my jam. This game was a complete surprise and it launching on Gamepass was nothing less than perfect. For the first hour I was marveling at how they captured the Virtua Racing on steroids feel. It is a shame the AI puts you behind with their sideswipes, but nothing says arcade racer like tests of patience. I dig it. Perhaps they will make a "season two" sequel and get everything right.

This is the best pure arcade racer I've tried since the good old PS1 Ridge Racer days.

I really like this game, but there are some problems that I wish the developers fix:
* A little more variety in track design. Aside form the art style, the tracks don't feel so different from one another or as challenging as other arcade racers.
* AI aggresiveness: maybe have an option to toggle aggression on/off (like in NFS 3).
* Rubberbanding: by far the worst part of the game. The AI is always behind you (and I mean all 7 opponents), all lined up horizontally. If you mess up in expert difficulty and stay behind a couple of seconds, you'll never catch up because they always have nitro without the need to fill it up as the player does.
* Add more game modes: things like Elimination, One on One, Drift (with score system), maybe more championships (there's only 4 in the game).

@@zylowolf7919 I have it on PC, and there aren't so many players there. Also, to play online there has to be at least 4 players to play any mode, the rest of the racers are managed by AI if the player count doesn't fill the maximum 8.
I heard in PS4 and Xbone there's more players in online mode though.

You always praise games like this too much. Hotshot Racing was originally going to be a kart style racer with weapons, and it really shows with the aggressive AI and handling, which now feel weird and unbalanced after the devs changed the games direction. It also has serious AI rubber banding. Just another mediocre "retro" attempt.

Totally agree about the rubber-banding - it's much too apparent in this one. Hopefully they patch it to smooth it out a bit. I was going to get this on Switch before realising it was on Game Pass. Glad I held off - 30 minutes in and I just can't play it any more the way it is now.

While still early and opinion will possibly change, initially i give the nod to Horizon over this one by a long shot right now. I hate that it doesn't let me use the D pad to control the car, I hate racers with the analog still, feels too loose/all over the place. Also the drifting feels really loose but that could just be the cars ive used so far. Hot shots was immediate love, this one, getting some side eye so far.

It seems the pretty much only complaint people make about this is the fact that this game has Rubberbanding, which very few of the Sega racers used. But I don’t really think it’s a bad thing, the original arcade games were designed to rob you of as many coins as they could and therefore were really hard and in some ways unfair, if you make just one mistake, you can’t come in first. And if you make a few mistakes in the beginning, you probably won’t make it to the top half of the racer list. These days it’s preferable to have a rubber banding system where losing players are given a boost in speed and winners are slowed down slightly, which gives worse players a better chance, which is especially good for multiplayer, so I think it’s a good addition to this to game, even if it is less accurate to the original. But in this day in age, maybe changing some of the more antiquated features that don’t hold up as well is a good thing.
I’m definitely gonna pick this up, it looks amazing.

I think a lot of people forget that Virtua Racing and Daytona were as much about avoiding the other racers as getting a good time around the track. If you watch closely, using rear view, the AI racers never use their turbos unless you are in front of them.

Man I love how the majority of the cars are a tribute to playable vehicles in Sega arcade racers. I got the chance to couch play a four player game and it was just pure fun.

Wish we would get more arcade racers like this. Fun game but the rubberbanding and crash dummy AI does make it harder to win on Expert. Normal and Hard I don't have too much trouble winning every race, just make sure you have a boost left at the end. Hoping soon they will add more tracks to extend the gameplay.

I've been enjoying it so far. It definitely feels satisfying once you can get the hang of handling the cars on hard or expert difficulty. I do have to agree that the music doesn't stand out too much, though I really like the dynamic theme that plays in Drive or Explode.

6:38 this right here is exactly what I dislike about most sim racers. I love myself some Gran Turismo, Forza, Assetto etc particularly with a wheel but the same bland real life race circuits, are woefully boring and usually look similar to one another. Arcade racers have the luxury of being environmentally creative, which greatly adds to their appeal.

what’s really cool is if you tried to exit a drift too early you will lose control of your car and will continue to slide in that direction to you hit a barrier, some people would find that aggravating but for me it’s an excuse to learn the characteristics of each car and helps you to take each corner differently

Good review, but my number 1 gripe is no steering wheel support. I play it on Playstation 4. However trying to show my son arcade games of the past experience on a joystick is no my idea of arcade homages. If they could update this one thing, for me and my son it would be perfect. In the meantime we will play Daytona and Outrun 2 on the 360.

It's a great game, but it's a shame it does not support racing wheels. We where hopping to make a cabinet for this game but it's not gonna happen soon.
It also needs some polish, but it's a fun game though. Totally recommend.

I agree with others that there’s annoying ‘rubber banding’, A.I. Crashing into you constantly, and that the tracks need elevation. But I have to say the moment I drifted around the first corner, I thought to myself, ‘“he developer has got the feel of this down to a ‘T’”. I haven’t been able to get an online match to work though, doesn’t seem to be enough people. And the jump from normal to hard is quite big. But if you’re an older gamer, there’s lots of nostalgia factor here. Even if it’s not quite as impressive as something like Daytona.

First of all, I wish you all the best looking forward regarding your family's challenges. Games like Hotshot Racing are just what I look for, being a son of golden age arcades. It looks and plays comfortably above my initial expectations, which is always good. I like the visuals and the fact that it is an amalgamation of some of the greats. I would however, prefer a game with similar mechanics, but visuals mirroring those of Daytona 2 or Scud Race. Maybe the better idea would be getting those two games out to home consoles, once and for all.

The rubber banding on this game is of the chart! Also on expert the AI is infuriating, constantly smashing into you on corners and spinning you into barriers! But it's so addictive that I can almost forgive these faults. Maybe an update to fix these issues will be forthcoming but right now I'd say steer clear of expert difficulty for fear of your controller being sent towards the tv in frustration. Again great game and really does revive those old sega classics. Cheers Lord X.

I honestly never understand why Sega arcade racing games tend to use checkpoints when they could had just being time race like all the rest. I know it make sense for Outrun but why Virtua Racing, Star Wars Racers, Daytona USA, and Sega Rally all used em? it certainly makes no sense and the fact that it's there means you really had no room for errors.

If anyone is looking for an amazing arcade style racer, try Hydro Thunder Hurricane from the Windows Store. There is even a demo! It runs amazing even on an old laptop with Intel HD Graphics 4000, I get 1080P 60 most of the time with settings maxed. It is super fun "old school" type racing.

Since 90's Super GP (formerly 90's Arcade Racer) is likely never getting released... this is the next best thing to old school Sega retro racing. I really like it but the rubber band AI is a real pain. This was originaly known as Racing Apex, in case you didn't already know.

Five years ago I would have said "Bring Outrun 3 already Sumo Digital" but now I'm glad they do not. Sumo made a very mediocre racer with Team Sonic Racing last year and this Hotshot Racing (talk about a placeholder title) doesn't look appealing like the arcade games Sega was pulling out in the mid 90s. Sega's arcade games were almost unreal back then, they were stylish, beautiful for their time and the sound department was stellar. It's not as easy as it seems to replicate that magic from a quarter of a century. This game doesn't have the "Wow effect" of Scud Race, the handling of Sega Rally, the personality of Daytona or catchy sound fx/music clip of Virtua Racing although it is greatly inspired visually by the latest. The AI that always crash on the player is also quite a downer. The system requirement seems pretty hefty as well for a game that desperately tries to look like a 25 years old game. 25 years is a very long time, we didn't even had 3Dfx back then on PC and this game recommends some GeForce GTX 970 / Radeon RX 570, I guess it was made on Unity but even then, I'd rather play these classics on console or emulation rather than playing this travesty.
I still hope Outrun 3 will be made, but not by Sumo. They were on top of their game 15-10 years ago but I'd rather see Outrun 3 with some fresh innovations rather than seeing the same drifting mechanics we've seen in the last 17 or so years.

It reminds me of Need for Speed III, and not just the cops aspect. The alpine and aquarium tracks look very similar, and I think that game had a fossil park, too.
