    Nice job. I've done a few of those in my RV business. Make sure you set the locking mechanism on the entrance door to also lock open so that someone can't swing that shut and lock you in. Teens love doing things like that. I'd add a solar panel on top to help boost your battery during the day time. Still a great job though.

    • @SDA817
      @SDA817 5 років тому

      @Jeremy Lawler not if someone puts a lock on it. Some teens did that to an 85 year old man last year and all he could do was stick his arm out the window with a flashlight and wave it . It was night time and he was out away from normal roads. It took most of the night before someone drove down the wrong road and accidentally found him.

    Seldom see a youtube video with the right title.....Perfect fits the description. All the ones I have looked at so far are trying to build a Castle it seems. I love the simplicity and how your build fits the needs and will keep the expense lower. I am going to do this in the not too distant future, and will either use the same bunk style as you or perhaps the fold up/down type from the wall. Not so sure I will even cook inside unless there is some way to vent a little better. Thanks for the video!!

      Thank you! Those bunks are quite nice and sturdy, building to the wall fold downs would be nice also. For use with getting a side by side in would have just been to tight.

    We hunted deer in the NYS Adirondacks where it would get to 20 below at night in a 70s Apache popup trailer. Had just an RV vented LP gas furnace for heat. Fiberglas uninsulated panels would sweat and it was hard to dry wet or snowy clothes. We used some closed cell foam under indoor/outdoor carpet to insulate the floor and some lower walls. Opening the door would suck all the heat out. We had 12 V RV lights and had a homemade car generator to recharge the batteries daily. Looking back, we should have enclosed the bottom with sheet plastic and possibly covered with a tarp. I think a couple LP gas lights would have given off some heat as well as light. CO2 might be a concern in a tightly sealed unit but it was far from airtight. We switched to a cabin tent with homesote addition for a kitchen and wood stove and were much more comfortable. A unit like yours would never have made it over the rocks, muddy logging road and beaver sloughs the 2 miles we had to drive thru. I wonder sometimes how we made it.

    • @TheHeartofHunting

      SWAMPHUNTER644 right on!! Not saying we would have made it to exactly the area your talking about but you would be surprised where all this poor trailer has gone lol. It has seen its fair share of off roading. Not saying it’s smart but we rarely turn back when we probably should. Our next build we are thinking of flipping the axels to gain a little ground clearance. Thanks for watching!

      Thank you! We do use the trailer in the off season just as a regular enclosed trailer since everything but the counter in the front can come out of it easily. The extra work we did to the trailer was about $1,200 maybe and we did all the work in 3 days so didn't feel like we had to much invested into it. Yes we do use it and get out more then most we
      probably spend at least 24-30 days a year living in it while out hunting. Thanks for watching!

    I didn't convert anything. I used my 2 horse slant load gooseneck horse trailer. It has a door for the front compartment and another door between the front compartment and the rear compartment. The gooseneck served as a place for my queensize mattress. There is a storage area in the front part of the gooseneck for whatever. The back compartment served well as a kitchen/dining area. There are two doors at the rear. One can be enclosed with a storage area for saddles etc. When hunting, I used it for a place for a porta potty. I carried a generator to operate the lights and it has roof mounted a/c in the front compartment. A butane heater keeps everything toasty and I attach a tarp to the back end for rain protection as well as setting out by the outdoor fireplace.

    Hey guys. Nice trailer. Me and the wife are building ours finally after a while of saving up the cash. Had a few questions if you have time. We are planning on using a propane generator to power the trailer up. I noticed you had an outside plug to go inside the trailer for all of your outlets and such. My question is what does that outside plug wire up to? A conberter? I'm not to wire/electrical handy. More on the building side and metal work. The other question is the battery. Can you charge that while running the generator? Any help would be greatly appreciated

    • @zzz7zzz9
      @zzz7zzz9 5 років тому

      my dad modified our hunting trailer. he cut the back open, so it became a big door that swung up and we could load the bike in. he changed the layout inside, so it could move to fit the bike, then go back into place and be table and seats and bed when the bike was out. wicked job. he's passed on now, and someone stole the trailer. miss them both a lot.

    We used 20# LP tanks for 4 burner stove and 2 LP lights run off a manifold in our tent. When the tank got low with minus 20 degree nights, we would sometimes have pressure problems. A 50 or 100# tank would have given better pressure if not for transport problems. It was a problem we never solved.

    About how much does the trailer weigh? And I'm curious about the fuel mileage you get when towing it at highway speeds.

    • @TheHeartofHunting
      @TheHeartofHunting  5 років тому +3

      I believe the dry weight is around 2,200 pounds with adding what we did probably added another 600. And i guess no idea how much when we load it up with gear.
      for mileage we have pulled it with a few different rigs gas 1/2 ton I'd say probably 8-11 mpg depending on the wind direction. With our 3500 diesel get about 12-14 again depending on wind. Can probably do better if we wanted but we usually drive 80 MPH. Deffinetly costs more to pull around but nice having a good place to sleep and more room for gear then would ever need.

We already use the same trailer you are but have been concerned about carbon monoxide gasses with the gas heater. There are some hunts where temps are in the single digits for us. Also I'm really curious about your cabinets do you have plans/measurements you would be willing to share? This is the perfect setup! Thank you for sharing!

      K Mcbiker we have the side window and the roof vent. Roof vent also has a fan. We have run this style heater countless times all night with no issues. It also gets down to single digits and even below zero on some hunts and we stay toasty warm. We always crack roof vent and side window just a bit. We also have a CO detector alarm just in case. The cabinets we didn’t have any plans just kinda made em as we went. Just bought pre made doors from a home improvement store and rest we just hand cut out of 3/4” plywood. I am seriously thinking about going this route. My question for you guys is mainly dealing with size. I use a ranger as well. What clearance height is best and are you happy with the 7 foot width? If you guys were to build another trailer what would you do differently?

    • @TheHeartofHunting
      @TheHeartofHunting  9 років тому +2

      John, good question. The Ranger is a very tight fit in this trailer. It will scrape the roof if we have not wait it in and the front of the trailer is too high. It is also a tight fit on the sides and you have to squeeze out. The issue with going bigger is it can be tough to get to some of the remote camping spots we like. I would possibly go 6" higher on the trailer but no wider. One area I would improve is the storage in the front. Our cabinets aren't great for accessing the stuff in them. Not sure how to improve that though.

    • @johnwright2425
      @johnwright2425 9 років тому +1

      out here in west TX where i hunt its not really a big deal on width so i may go with a wider one. I'm a pretty big ole boy and i don't want to have to duke boy over the front hood to get in and out! I am wondering if overhead cabinetry would be better to conserve floor space? i think you could build some more usable cabinets to insert overhead or chest level and be more organized..just a thought..i love your trailer..thanks for the reply

    Some things you didn't touch on: drinking water, wastewater, washing up, showers, eating area, refrigeration, low temperature suitability, gun storage, privy or waste, road access requirements, towing requirements, inside moisture issues. We used an Apache fiberglass pop up camping trailer 7 years in the Adirondacks back in 2 miles on a logging road in minus 20 degree night temperatures. It was usable but not ideal. Biggest problem was condensation and drying wet clothing, keeping inside warm. Trailer body got banged up hauling in and out. Plastic lift chain for the top would freeze up and require thawing to lower.

      @@timothymcvay7286 window was pretty easy just cut right size hole install and seal it up. I'm sure are some videos that show details. The latch took a little more work again cut hole for it getting hole thru thin side of door as hardest. We didn't have right tools for it. A dermal tool would probably work great to do it.

    How do you vent your cooking? Wouldn’t that stink up all your gear?

    • @TheHeartofHunting
      @TheHeartofHunting  5 років тому +1

      When we were younger we never gave it much thought and probably did stink up all our gear. We still had success somehow maybe elk like the smell of bacon lol. But to answer your question there is a vent in the roof with a fan that we run when cooking, and now we either leave our hunting gear outside or in ziplock totes that seal well when cooking.

    • @TheHeartofHunting
      @TheHeartofHunting  4 роки тому

      washburnbilly thank you! It has been brought up many times about getting locked in I guess has never been a concern of ours. Most places we camp we don’t even see another person. Our thoughts where to lock the 2 holes together without the latch in it should prevent this from happening? Also our window is right by the latch so could possibly reach out and undo whatever has been done. If buying a new trailer you can get them with just the RV latch and not the big bar latch also. I guess since we added the RV handle we could take the other one off. But like said honestly getting locked in from someone passing by is about the farthest concern from our minds. Thanks for watching!
