Matt, my girlfriend and I have been watching your videos to prepare for the ADT next year. Your videos and notes (via hikingamerica) are invaluable. We are watching this right now and heard you talking about wanting to be organized and cut out the filler, so I felt compelled to tell you that you have achieved this goal above and beyond. Watching your stuff is like a video course in through-hiking, sprinkled with lots of great information along the way. Thanks for doing these, we appreciate you! We are based in Riverside county, when we finish the hike we might have to take you and Taters out for a meal and conversation. Hope you're well!

I feel the same about wanting to get away from other people when I set up camp for the night. I do long distance self contained, self supported bicycle touring. In the past I did several group rides and would set up as far away from anybody else but still in the area allotted by the city or school grounds. Often someone would follow me out to the edges and set up a few feet away from me. Like I hadn't made it clear enough that I wanted to be alone for the night. I'd give them a piece of my mind and pick up, and move farther out or off to the side if at all possible. Used to drive me nuts! Since I got kicked off a group ride, (CANDISC in ND) I haven't done any group rides. I have sort of ridden all the way across the U.S. from Seattle to D.C. so I'm very fascinated to watch your progress. Oh by the way, the mosquitos in northern MN are nothing compared to the Mosquitos in Ontario Canada. I biked the north shore of Lake Superior from Duluth MN to Sault Ste Marie a couple years ago and in a closed Provincial Park (stealth camping) called Obatanga I nearly bled out with the little bastards.

Another nice video. That gravel road(from 5:00 to 14:00) was very nicely constructed. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

The forest service builds great roads. They kinda wrote the book on roads. A lot of research on road construction was done right around here on the Fernow Experimental Forest. James Kochenderfer worked on best practices for logging and access roads here for years. More research was done at Hubbard Brook in New Hampshire.

The unfinished bridge you passed under is part of the US 48 "Corridor H" freeway. I drove the completed eastern section last fall from Wardensville to Davis on my way to visit Blackwater Falls.

Nice one !! Polished or rough your videos are always interresting so keep on the productivity. This section looks a lot like the " European hikes" i do : mix of roads , a bit of trails and passing little towns . One of the reasons i talked about the tip protectors for hiking poles . The hardened (gravel) roads or trails eat hiking pole tips. Keep it on .

I ran across your channel by accident. I live in Philippi where you’re heading. It’s so cool what you’re doing, I always wanted to do that when I Was younger and wish I did🙂 Stay safe and happy travels!

Keep up the good mileage! As a native midwesterner, there is ALWAYS a heat wave that comes in July/August where it will be 100+ for a few weeks.

Your sharing the videos with others is so appreciated. I have learned so much about long distance hiking from watching your videos since 2021, starting with when you entered Big Cypress. It really helped me a lot last year on my AT thru hike.
Question about socks. How many pair do you carry? And if they are muddy like in today’s video would you rinse them off in that nearby stream and hang dry them on your pack during the day since the weather looked good so that you can wear clean dry socks and help keep your feet in reasonable shape?
    Thanks! - Geo

I only found the wash and dry thing to work out west and honestly I don’t spend a lot of time messing with that these days. I usually have 2-3 pairs with me depending on how cold it is and how worn they are. These days I try to wear a single pair until they are just full of holes and then switch to avoid them all being done at once. For whatever reason though I don’t find clean socks are that big a deal. But as always it depends on circumstances

I really enjoyed watching your SOBO hike. It's not often you get to see the SOBO experience. You looked so happy on this final day. Congratulations on your finish. I hope the post-trail experience has been okay for you. Looking forward to any updates or further adventures.

The blue flowers at 15:18 are woodland phlox and the yellow are golden ragwort, and such a pretty eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly to add to the picture! I'm not absolutely sure what all the yellow flowers are at 17:39, at this time of year it should be wild mustard - nope. just a lot of golden ragwort.

Do you plan to use an umbrella when you hit the hot prairies? Your time in Louisiana last year was during a record-breaking heat wave, you and Jen did much better than most of us natives. We are too used to hugging our air conditioners. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

I haven’t found them to be real useful in heat but we’ll see. Louisiana last year was really rough on us; I know what you mean about the AC. I grew up in Texas and it would be hot and humid but everyone just went Ac to ac

i would literally be tickled to death if i lived along that trail and saw a thru hiker near sunset and could offer them a place to camp. but i guess if you don't know thru hiker gear then you can't tell who's who.
i LOVE the farms you're passing.. it's beautiful up there. i hope it stays that way.

When I was on the ECT some other hikers ended up accidentally forming a trail family with a homeless guy for a day or two. I can’t fault people for not being able to tell the difference :)

Not relevant to this video as such, but this is my real time. Had a nosy at the Yukon challenge, seems the latter bits dont get done often. Do you not fancy hiking from the glacier to navigation of the lake before heading down river for an even more source, source to sea?

Higher up had some appeal to me but considering our time window due to Jen’s summer we decided it was better to start at Whitehorse. Even with unlimited time I’d probably skip anything that was just hiking

as a former Mountaineer, your creative pronunciations of WV places has been amusing. BTW When you cross into Belpre, Ohio, if you stay on Washington Boulevard a couple of miles Las Trancas has the nachos and Mexican food for you. Not sure where "the trail" is supposed to go through Belpre as I have never seen any signs for the ADT in that area even though it is supposed to go through there

    • @PascalRimbaut
      @PascalRimbaut 9 місяців тому

The ADT follows Washington Boulevard between George Street and Middle Street (only maybe 1/2 mile) and leaves Belpre by Middle Street , Rockland Avenue and Fallson Street.

@mattaylor8935 they used to offer really good customer service back before they were aquired. Post Covid I’ve had a hell of a time getting responses. I’ve just always had a bias against Leki dating back to the days when snaplock poles were still patented and I had the occasional student face plant when the twist locks came loose

Frustrating and so different watching you trying to find public land where you can camp. Here in Scandinavia, we can camp about anywhere as long as we don't camp right next to someone's home. And of course leave no trace, no damage to nature, no making fires etc, but otherwise, you can put up a tent anywhere and stay for a night. Two weeks to go before I start my first-ever thru-hike of 370 miles from Sweden to Norway, from the Baltic Sea to the Atlantic. :)

"And of course leave no trace, no damage to nature, no making fires etc"
Besides the private property obsession of many Americans, that's a big reason why the USA doesn't allow it. Too many Americans looking to have a bonfire and get drunk with their friends, dump trash, commit vandalism, etc. Public and private lands both suffer.
