- Charles Edward Greene (born September 5, 1946), better known as "Mean" Joe Greene, is a former American football defensive tackle who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1969 to 1981. A recipient of two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, five first-team All-Pro selections, and ten Pro Bowl appearances, Greene is widely considered to be the one of the greatest defensive linemen to play in the NFL. He was noted for his leadership, fierce competitiveness, and intimidating style of play for which he earned his nickname.
"Hey Kid, Catch!" was a television commercial for Coca-Cola starring Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle "Mean" Joe Greene. The commercial debuted on October 1, 1979, and was re-aired multiple times, most notably during Super Bowl XIV in 1980. The 60-second commercial won a Clio Award for being one of the best television commercials of 1979.[1]
During its planning and filming stages, McCann Erickson, the advertising agency that created the commercial, used the working title "Mean Joe Greene". The commercial was a part of Coca-Cola's "Have a Coke and a Smile" ad campaign of the late 1970s. The commercial's set-up and payoff is classic simple advertising.

My Mother had the biggest crush on Mean joe Greene. The funny thing about this is that we are Cleveland Brown fans. Whenever she would see Mean Joe on TV, she would scream like a teen age girl who had a crush on a movie star heart throb. I miss you Momma. Rest in Heaven. Happy Birthday Mean Joe. Thanks for the memories.
❤️
I remember the blooper they showed in the 1980's of this commercial when at the end Mean Joe says, "Hey kid...BUUUUUUURP!"
Then he says CATCH then throws the kid the empty bottle
Best Super Bowl commercial that ever was!
Any man that can drink a whole bottle of coke in one go is dangerous. He’s clearly not like the rest of us.
especially if he can shoot it out his nose and it doesn't burn
This is the best Super Bowl commercial ever!!
I had the honor to be in the stands at the Temple Wildcat football game tonight. Temple ISD honored Joe Greene by officially retiring the first ever TISD High School jersey from Dunbar High. The list of achievements and accolade's seemed to take about 3 or 4 minutes. It was an honor though to see him.
Why do I know every damn word if this damn commercial! Lol!
Whichever ad-man thought that one up struck gold.
Happy birthday Joe Greene, I was blessed to be born on the same day as you!
Hell yeah! Only called him "Mean" cause he was nice enough to take the joke, friendly-ass giant. Happy Bornday, Mean Joe Greene.
Happy Birthday Mean Joe 🏆 Thanks for the memories ✊
GOAT of commercials
Happy Birthday brotha
Wonder how many bottles of "Coke" he drunk, to make US smile? 😄
It took three days to film so he had many.
During those times, people were taking a lot of coke & smiling so it fits the era.
It did say coke adds life
"the kid" was played by Tommy Okron; even at his young of age, Okron was a commercial veteran--he even gave Greene suggestions on improving his performance. they reunited some 35 years later for Entertainment Tonight.
They reunited for an All Madden special. He didn’t get the jersey in real life. So Mean Joe gave him a jersey. The he treated Mean Joe to a beverage. Not coke but an ice cold beer.
I like the SNL spoof one where he throws a wet jock and it hits the kid in the face.
Much Gratitude
When football was real. to me.
Back when Coke was real and not this swill they sell now.
Before Tom Brady ruined football!
CLASS ACT MEAN JOE
Before high fructose corn syrup
Happy Joe Greene day
The commercials were so much better than. Now all the commercials are about medications and cars.
😃 Well, I'll agree, too many pharma ads on TV in the US, these days, bur cars? We've always had car ads on TV, since forever, I'm sure. It's fun to look back at some of the old car ads from the 70s and 80s, but maybe you'd have to be a car person to enjoy it? 😉
My INSEAD training brought me here.
Who's here after fetterman's ad? 😭
lmao
The first MJG..
Cuz all professional athletes want after a hard game is some luke warm diabetes juice.
Later the kid sold that jersey for $100K. Back when Coke was really the "real thing", unilke now.
todays players and uniforms In 2024 look like middle school
what a disgrace
This ad sucks, it would never happen in real life.
🩷🩵💜
The 70s and 80s were better. Kids today have no idea how fun America was before it was woke.
White middle class kids* ftfy
1979, when Coca-Cola ads were racist.
How is this racist?
@@thecawdsquad875 It's NOT!
Just pointing out how the younger of us, are sometimes brainwashed to think of all things old, are all racist. This is commercial that was great, but not for anything to do with any race or Politics. Just a good person, tired as he was, was showing his character, and being kind to one of his biggest fans. This was when Coke was "woke" by character, not by skin color.
😂
