I will attempt its translation from the point of view of a Sufi, whose beloved is Allah. The lovers of God, use metaphors of zulf (tress of hair) to indicate the manifestation of God though His created beings and attributes. He is hidden behind His Zulf. Face refers to His Essence or Zaat. His lovers enjoy both His revelation of beauty, and covering to tease them. Morning breeze (باد صبا )refers to His kind grace to give the lovers a glimpse of His beauty. Shoulder ( شانہ) refers to another kind of veil to conceal His face. The metaphor of dana ( grain to attract and draw birds into a trap) and dam-e-bala ( the afflictions of the trap that will follow) refer to the obvious trials and tribulations that a lover goes through, but he is compelled by his love to walk into the trap, while disregarding the advice of his mind. I hope this brief explanation will make listening to this ode really enjoyable. I have listened to it multiple times and enjoy every bit of it.
At night a candle burnt on one side the radiant face of my beloved glowed on the other.
On one side, I burnt in my fire of love for my beloved, and on the other side, the moth burnt in the love of the candle.
The hearts of the crowd of lovers went through an upheaval,
When on one side, the morning breeze blew away the tress of their beloved’s hair to uncover the face, but the shoulder came in between to block the view from the other side.
In His love, I go through episodes of sorrows and happiness day and night,
My rational mind pulls me on one side and my maddening sweet love pulls me on the other.
When I left drinking, the cup bearer told me with coquetry and blandishing demeanor,
Keep your abstinence aside, come have a drink with me
My heart fell prey to the beautiful countenance and tress of my beloved,
Putting afflictions of the trap aside,
I walked in to get my coveted prize
