My husband and I used the food bank for the first time ever during this pandemic. We used it twice until one of us found a job again. It was a drive thru pick up both times, and both times the line was hundreds of cars long.
I was grateful the help was available, and that luckily where I was they gave us really nutritious foods (fresh produce, milk, frozen chicken). Thank you to all of you who work for it volunteer for food banks. You don’t know what a difference you made when I was desperate.
I am so thankful they were there to help you, bless you and your family. Merry Christmas
Don’t forget to give back, once things ease for you... even better, volunteer in a food bank. They always need help
That is amazing! Remember to pay it forward when you can :)
I work for a mobile app called PICKL, that wants to help out with food insecurity, the app pays shoppers $5 to take pictures of products, in grocery store shelves, so it might be a quick easy way, to make some money. sorry for the spammy reply i'm just trying to get the word out.
Pantry I help at was inside then when the pandemic first hit it became drive-through we probably had 60-70 people a week then they moved back inside last fall a numbers have brought down to 40 for a week before the pandemic ever started we used to have 80-90 people a week
Closest I got to hunger was eating pasta for breakfast, lunch and dinner during my student year's end of the month. Hearth goes to those people, nobody should go hungry in a modern country that wastes sooo much.
If people can afford gas, homes, they can afford food.Depends on what you are eating. You can have only eggs, chickpeas and bread-you are good for a day under $1.5
@@cs-mi8ur these people probably CANT afford gas and homes. 8 million more have slipped into the poverty line since covid. thousands evicted. the food bank lines are insane here...people will survive on bread and water but it's not sustainable for a long period of time. I've been homeless before, and I've had to choose between gas for the week and eating two meals a day. It's not that simple.
@@TheSword2212 I believe you even as a homeless person had $2-3 to spend on a daily basis. If they are unemployed they probably don't need much gas.You can afford to have 2000 Kcals even below a dollar-that too nutritious with enough protein and fiber.People live like that all over the world.People in US go hungry because they would not use those healthy but cheap options for their food-even with food stamps.
@@cs-mi8ur yeah, but why should people have to live a miserable life like that? There’s plenty to go around, but greedy corporations don’t care.
@@Turningthepage-lr2ev my point was there is enough for no one to go hungry. You need to be flexible during tough times.Provoding necessary nutrition to it's citizens is a duty of the government, other than that it's upto the person himself or herself.
Videos like this really remind me how fortunate I am to have a roof over my head and have food :( . Crazy to think of the everyday I things I take for granted.
Me too. I lost my job and can't find anything- I mean anything at all. Fast food, Walmart, nothing. We've had to give up a lot & it's pretty miserable. But my husband still has money coming in, and we have a roof over our heads and enough to eat. It sounds lame but we all should probably remember to be thankful for whatever we've got. And to do what we can, however little that may be, for those who have even less.
I know what i'm saying isn't profound, but it's true that most people don't show enough gratitude for the things the have, or the people who support them.
There’s nothing wrong with getting help with food. Maybe you’re someone’s who’s never used one & only donates. But be clear it can absolutely happen to you.
Because it can definitely happen to me, I volunteer at a food bank and donate food. And I also squirrel away lots of shelf-stable food in my prepper pantry in order to weather any crisis. Because I know the need is so great I do not want to become part of the problem. My solution is to eat on what I can buy for about $1 a day per person. There is gardening, preserving, canning, and cooking going on here to make that happen.
Because we refuse to buy manufactured or fast foods, we save a lot of money and are able to stay out of debt. I buy rice, beans, steel cut oats, flour, cold pressed vegetable oils, canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, and canned fish, as long as any processing was only enough to preserve the food with no additives other than some salt as needed. That means no boxed cereal, no sodas, no rice or pasta mixes, no packets of gravy mix, no boxes of chicken or vegetable stock, no catsup, no mayonaise, no bread, no chips, no crackers, no cookies, no ice cream, no candy. If I want any of the items on that list I can and do make them myself. I make bread the old fashioned way and make tortillas and tacos out of masa the Aztec way. I do this while working full-time and taking care of a family.
I was ok at first but i lost my job due to the pandemic, and i found a job but its only 3 days a week. Its hard i understand im barely surviving n i cant get any help cause i dnt have kids and im not elderly. Pray for myself and everyone suffering.
I hope things work out for you

Why do we even bother electing officials and paying taxes if the government doesn't help us? Tank and aircraft carriers are cool, but food and healthcare are better
The government does help you in a multitude of ways. What do you expect the government to provide and care for you? If you want the government to do something they need to lighten the restrictions. This is not a pandemic if you think this is a pandemic you're soft as ice cream.
We have to use the system for change, bc our only real power is voting.

Are you sure about that?

Democrats held off a second stimulus to prevent Trump from looking good. They passed a 3 trillion package with 1 trillion having nothing to do with the virus and bailing out marijuana industries, GOP negotiated 800 billion joke of a package, then the White House offered a 2.2 trillion dollar package the Nancy refused to accept. When asked about on CNN she told Wolf that she knows what best for her voters because they feed us.
the stock market is up...dosnt matter to these people. Im sure trumps has plenty in the stock market.

Trump can literally pass action to help the ones in need(Republicans have majority in senate), yet he postpone the next stimulus until after election

The crisis is deeper than what everyone sees.
I was homeless for years when the economy was doing ok.
I got a full time job with government when the pandemic hit.
Not gonna say that people didn't care about each other, because I'm sure they do, but most lower wage workers were bogged down by bills & the need to make more money to pay for those bills was so routine that they forgot there was a road to progress that society detoured from that kept those bills low generally.
Consumerism, capitalism & greed is what destroyed the community.
I have been fortunate enough to remain employed during the pandemic, I praise God for that. I have step children who know what is going on in the world, yet they waste food and sometimes don’t eat when food is brought to them. I didn’t grow up like they did, I am glad I grew up knowing real world problems. Growing up we used food banks and were homeless for some time. I pray everyone reading this is safe and I hope this all ends soon. Be grateful for what you have.

Not due to Covid. Due to Government lockdowns. Blame the government
Dear christian women of the world try buying from dollar tree and 99 cent stores your food. You can buy flour and sugar and yeast to make bread and cake. It's under $10 dollars and last days. Buy eggs and Noddles and rich and make soup. All a $1 each for them all. So you can feed self on $50 a month if you are smart. So don't desperate in america just be smart. Then save the rest of your money and learn to farm in your yard or buy your own land with other poor people and farm on it. Even put chicken on it for nuturalies and eggs. Chickens don't really need a lot to live. Anyways you will live. Just depends on Jesus and you will be find. Next year I'm ramping up my gardening operation to try to maximize my yield on long storable vegetables like potatoes. You don't have to go hungry if you have land to grow food. If everybody who owns a backyard turned their land into gardens... nobody would be lining up for food. This is the problem we put ourselves in, we become too dependant on others for our food... If they can't deliver on the food, we starve. We have to start growing our own food and anybody who doesn't I don't think will survive the coming future...
This is so sad 😞.....

It makes no sense for a country - America in this case - to be called a superpower but not have financial aid to ensure those at the "bottom" are provided the proper means to manage a pandemic.
Thanks for covering this stuff VICE. I wonder if you could take a look at why CEOs like the one at Feeding America are so selfish and greedy. Should Feeding America’s CEO make 500 grand a year off of donations to the poor, while these people can’t even afford food?
If a person is unwilling to help feed the poor for 60-80 thousand a year, do they really love the poor or do they love money?
Don’t give me that nonsense about enormous salaries bringing in the best talent, millions of people in this nation can run a food bank for for 60 thousand a year.
The USA has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. Americans are NOT going to suffer if they miss a meal or two. At least cutting back on portion sizes will Actually benefit the USA.
