Well done as always, Mike!! That is a very interesting look into Robert Oppenheimer, his lifelong commitment to ending nuclear weapons and at the birth of nuclear weapons.. These are just the kind of fascinating topics you bring to life, and people will love them, wait and see!! Funny little fact about the Oppenheimers - all but their son Peter lived very short lives for some reason or another and within 10 years of Robert's death, his wife and daughter died, leaving Peter as the sole survivor of the family.

It is worth noting before I watch this that Oppenheimer was not absolutely critical to the atomic bomb being developed, at least not as I read the historical sources...he was necessary for getting it done as quickly as it was. Even if Oppenheimer had never come to the project, Presidents Roosevelt and Truman would have been determined to get the bomb even if that meant the war was over by the time the first test was done.

He was becoming critical of a vast money-making industry, and the owners and rulers can't have have that.
Quite precisely the exact thing that goes on today and ever since.
An early form of canceling and smearing those who dissent a money-making operation and industry.

It was not as much about the money as it was about the power and more so the security that power brings. There were genuine and valid fears of the Soviets, as there were was of communists in general (look at how our society has turned out today). However neither total atomic annihilation nor McCarthy-ist witch hunts were good solutions at all. After all, witch hunting and ruining the lives of suspected communist Marxist sympathizers is itself a communist tactic and I don't think many Americans understood that back then nor today. America is a country with the most free speech and where free speech and good diplomacy can be used as a tool to credibly and honestly discredit bad schools of thought like fascism, communism, Marxism, socialism, etc, and make sure those schools of thought never gain any political hold while still upholding people's right to believe in those schools of thought. Unfortunately, just like the second amendment, most Americans don't know how to use it and/or don't have the courage to use it.

    An excellent video.
I am a strong proponent of science and learning simply for the sake of learning.
However, what scientists often forget is the idea that just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean you should do a thing.
We are at a cusp in science now, things like cloning, DNA manipulation, and AI.
We must never forget the other age old maxim:
The road to he'll is paved with good intentions

Oppenheimer didn't unleash the bomb: Truman did. If anyone would have to feel guilty, it would be him.

I think so as well. Same with gun. Gun never harm anybody until it was used by person who intend to harm people. Is gun at fault? No. It just a tool.

Sad to see this from you. You either didn't do diligent research or you just choose to ignore facts.
It was a time of mistrust because the Soviets had infiltrated the Manhattan project and used it to create their own bomb in 1949.
His "left wing activism" included help funding the Soviet backed Republicans during the Spanish civil war.
He had several ties with the Soviet backed Communist Party, which included his brother and his wife.
His major objections were with bombing Japan, he had no issues bombing Germany.
Soviet documents directly place him as collaborator.

If our governments truly wanted peace, Nato would invite every country on earth to join the alliance.
If everybody is allied with each other and someone declares war against another, then they would face the whole world against them.
It as simple as that to achieve world peace.
    Has it ever been attempted?
