  • Here's a cover of the Chill Theme, from 1990s NES classic, Dr. Mario. This is Tetris like puzzle game that was popular on both the NES and Gameboy. Possibly more memorable than the gameplay and the bizarre paper thin Mario's a doctor premise, is the music. The soundtrack featured two main puzzle themes, and both are tremendous tunes in their own right. I recorded this version for Dwelling of Duels' Mario Redux month titling it Prescription for Chill!
For tracking, I double tracked two guitars thru the Fender Cybertwin mic'd up with an sm57, and added some extra keyboards to double the guitar parts using the Surge XT and Tyrell N6 plugins. Bass was direct in as usual, and drums were tracked with my usual microphone configuration. On the drumkit, I added a 2nd hihat for the intro and outro, and made a stack of some broken chinas I have lying around. For performance, by far, the solo section was the hardest thing to lay down, it's impressive how hard this track shreds!
Hope you enjoyed this classic tune!

This is awesome man, so much work must go into these. You deserve way more views and subs!
Ps love the double bass you put into this song

Thanks, I appreciate it! I felt like the solo/jam out section called for double bass was just calling for it! The subs and views are gradually creeping up, so hopefully those trends continue. Always mindblowing to me that you can put songs out on the internet like this and people can find them, it never used to be like that!

I have a sickness, and the only cure is more Mario.
(jokes aside nice job man, this one was pretty catchy)

Thanks! The bass line and the solo break really make this tune, great piece of music!

@@thesosomusician also maybe a dumb question, but have you experimented with shorts? They've been the main way I've been growing, so I try to recommend them to other people who have cool content. It's kinda nice that you can just take clips from stuff you've already made/posted, for what that's worth. They are kind of a different audience/demographic though, so idk. Figured I would recommend them if you get bored.

@@dahunlee_acousticguitar_covers not dumb at all and I appreciate looking out for a fellow youtuber! I wanted to do shorts, but haven't been able to figure out how to convert my video to the vertical format needed for shorts. I'm not crazy about using my phone to film either since it's an extra obstacle to my workflow. Any tips/good tutorial videos?

@@thesosomusician shorts can be kind of hit or miss for me, but they're pretty easy to make (usually take 10~20 mins or so). I would recommend trying them for a bit on your favorites you've made so far, and see if they gain any traction. (the third one I made got close to a thousand views I think, but sometimes they can languish and get 20 or so lol, so it can feel a bit random. They do feel like they have way more exposure than normal vids though, for what that's worth).
Shorts did help me grow from 20 subs to over 80 though, so I think they can help a bit depending on the content.

I experimentally created a short, gotta find a better way to make them than the site I did it on (not crazy about watermarks in exchange for a free site!).
Regular videos are pretty hit or miss too, I've had videos go bananas for about 48-72 hours after release for no rhyme or reason that I can identify, and sometimes videos randomly also start getting some kind of algorithmic boost (my Batman stage 3 tune has gotten about 1000 views in the past month for no particular reason I'm aware of). I figure shorts probably will be similarly chaotic!

You played those rock band drums just a bit

Ha, a bit! Interestingly enough, of all the rockband instruments, I played the drums the least, and even weirder, the "pro" guitar (the one with the strings) actually very significantly helped both my actual guitar playing and ear training. The ear training was a complete surprise.
