It only took Harry one day to write “Watermelon Sugar” lyrically. However, It took much longer to actually finish the song because at first he really liked it and then for a while he really hated it but it kept coming back into the mix. (Info. from one of his Capital FM interviews as well as the Tiny Desk Concert)

here a year later just to say that tbsl is one of my favorite HS songs of all time. the vibe is over the roof, the instrumental is so unique and refreshing, the lyrics are interesting and kinda relatable. it's just such a good song over all. it's a shame that it's not a single so more people would know about it existence. even harry's fans don't really pay much attention to it, but, y'know, it's their own loss.
Dynamite is such an upbeat song and I think it’s hard to be performed live with raw vocals and all but you could watch spring’s day performance it’s more acoustic and the vocals are less auto tuned
same. but dynamite does stand out in a way because of jungkook's highnote that he usually does not do with choreography. except that though... i prefer the others
Yh I believe so not just cuz im army, idk if u know there other songs but if u listen to their song like Anpaman its supposed to sound metalicy and autotuned but even so It still might just be because the show like made them do it...but also bear in mind like this is an all singing song so the rappers might need a bit of help...

Don't take this as a dig towards BTS or anything, i know they are amazing singers, but there's defo still autotune on their vocals on the other songs, just not as aggressive like in dynamite :)

@@danishmbc6437 The issue here is that, nowadays, 99% of pop musicians are using autotune, reverb or some type of effects in their mics in their "acoustic" performances. I've seen a lot of singers doing online "acoustic" performances in quarantine, some have very subtle sound effects, but most of them aren't "100% live with no production over their voices". Same goes for people who make covers or youtuber singers, almost all of them have post-production in their "acoustic" songs, it's the norm. I've heard people saying that we are so accustomed and dissensitised that we don't realise, or we may think "they sang badly" or "something was off" if the performances didn't have any virtual production... So, nowadays we assume that "the singer is using autotune" only when people use it as a voice distortion effect (not for pitch correction), because that's more obvious (it's the case with BTS's Dynamite for example)... But, in reality, most mainstream musicians are using stuff in all their performances, even they ones that seem acoustic.
To everyone wondering why it took Harry so long to write watermelon sugar: As far as I know, it’s not like he’s been working on watermelon sugar for three years nonstop - he just started working on it and didn’t really know how to bring everything together so that he’s happy with the result, so he pushed it to the side for a little bit and came back to it later when basically all the other songs for fine line were already done (if I remember correctly).
I understand him it happened also with Suga he's the lead rapper of BTS and he's also a big fan of watermelon sugar high ,he wrote and producer a song called "tomorrow" when he was 19 but he released it when he became 21 in 2014 it's actually an RnB song you can check it out

Dynamite isn't really Dynamite when you don't put a little bit of tuning there, you can't get give the vibe of the song properly without tuning it. I wish he reacted to Spring Day or Save Me :(
I knew that the dynamite performance was tuned however I was curious about what you said about it being added later, so I checked out the stage cam again to check and it does sound like that’s the case since the stage cam sounds much more raw. It sounded good as well so now I’m confused as to why they decided to tune it so much.
@Anupama A.P. That's understandable, but I think we are at a point where language doesn't really matter. Its the actual singing ability that is being reacted to. I don't want people to get the wrong idea about BTS and think "Dynamite" is all that BTS is.
It was not really a "tiny desk" performance the same as the others though. It's apples and oranges comparing their performance to the others, because everything sounded processed even though it was supposedly live.
Ok but that was the only peformance they had at tiny desk, plus dynamite is their most popular song right now (and it's the only english one) so of course they would include that instead of everything else

I mean to say that im a little regretful that dynamite is considered their most popular song just because of how it was made for the sole purpose blowing up in the west. Instead of accepting that, we need to continue promoting their korean music, because they are korean artists.
Yeah, it would be SO COOL. But since Dynamite is an English song, it's always the song that gets shown when BTS appears in the video. And in my opinion, Dynamite isn't really their best song. Especially that tiny desk performans isn't really their best performance. There are still LOTS OF content to watch out there to understand their music better.
I'm disappointed that the editors chose Dynamite for BTS's performance instead of Save Me or Spring Day, but honestly, I'm not surprised at all. Joel's reaction was also expected.
But dynamite is more popular in the west and it an english song so he can focus on the vocals rather than the song and the lyrics that he doesn't know and give a better reaction

@@bettyinloop That's not a fair thing to say. You can perfectly focus on the vocals no matter in which language is the song. Joel also usually goes to read/review the lyrics after watching a music video, he could do the same with a song in a foreign language. In fact, he has done this in the past. And unlike other singers, you can actually find good translations for BTS songs. Also, he has already heard Dynamite and didn't like it that much, so listening to another song would have made more sense. It's not a big deal though, his observation was fair and expected too.

Love you Joel💜💜💜💜💜💜 PS If you see this Roomie, here’s my take on the autotune with BTS: I really appreciate Tiny Desk, but these times the industry hasn’t entirely “embraced” K-Pop and international artists in general, so they did BTS dirty. Like actually translating Korean lyrics for BTS and Blackpink instead of putting (Singing in a foreign language) in subtitles, for example. And I’ve noticed that a lot of the mainstream music industry is still treating K-Pop (And other international music.) like it’s some exotic thing that no one will understand or like, when the joke is all on them. LOOK AT HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE INTO KPOP OR AT LEAST HEARD OF/RESPECT IT! I’m begging this part of the music industry to at least compensate as much as they can for international artists, especially Kpop artists, their lyrics are actually very meaningful😇
BTS performed 3 songs in their tiny desk concert and only Dynamite was autotuned. Idk why they did it, they probably did do it to match the recording. Spring Day sounded really good though.

You're taking it too seriously. Many fandoms have extremely cancerous fans, and BTS is yuge as music group. I don't listen to any Kpop and am well aware of them due to how damn popular they are. Roomie's channel is the only real exposure I have to Kpop, but I get the context. Particularly for crazy music stans, it's an odd kind of zealous behavior lol. BUT it works in similar ways for all kinds of subjects. Video games have certain games/platforms known for being super toxic like League of Legends or Modern Warfare 2 lobbies on Xbox Live (good ole days tho lol). Or with fitness how some people are the biggest stans to Jeff Cavaliere and think he can do literally no wrong when he has. Or in sports with the constant Michael Jordan v Lebron James debates. These things are everywhere in different forms. Fanboy/fangirl how you like and do you fam.

They just lash out at us too. But if you go a bit deep into KPOP, you'll see that there are more nice and well behaved ARMYs than the toxic ones. Same for any other fandom.
I am still waiting for Joel to react to something other than Dynamite from bts. Like I just want him to do a deep dive into them. They are so much more than what is promoted in the western market.

Honestly, I agree, Dynamite was not their best performance in that concert, there were better songs they performed, like Spring Day, yes it's less upbeat, but there's much less autotune and the vocals sound more raw, they just did better on it overall. Dynamite is definitely BTS's most overplayed song yet, I'd like to see you branch out to some of their other less known songs.
I don't really understand why Ariana was mentioned in Mac's presentation... Also when it comes to BTS, I think it would have been more interresting to show their "Spring day" performance ( I would really love to see Joel react to more of BTS in the futur !)
Honestly I agree with the BTS auto tune thing. I love their songs and they're great artist no doubt, but the autotune is just...too much for me sometimes. I try not to think about it too much so I can enjoy it

Same, I really wanted that rawness but never got it. The label has a tendency to always slap a good amount of auto tune on their vocals in the after mix which is honestly so annoying.

I’ve listened to songs in in multiple different languages that I don’t know (Korean, Japanese, Irish, Spanish, French, German...just to name a few) but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying the music...and it’s broadened my musical horizons...and if I really like it, I will dive into the lyric translations, but then, I’m a lyrics person...

Joel I always appreciate your reactions. But did the editors really have to pick Dynamite. Save me or Spring are much better songs that actually showcase the vocal and rap range in their own language with proper live vocals. You can even hear Jin breath when singing those tracks. Dynamite has stylistic autotune especially for RM and Suga because they aren't vocalists at all they are rapper's...there's no rap in this song.
But they used autotune for their whole Tiny Desk Concert, even if they didn't used as much as for Dynamite for the other songs, so I think Joel would have said the same thing for Save ME or Spring Day. And the whole concert is mixed after the recording, like an actual studio song, and they made multiple takes. If you don't believe me, just look at how Jungkook is harmonizing with Taehyung in the second verse of Dynamite. (sorry for my English, it isn't my first language)

If it was mixed as a studio version you wouldn't be able to hear Jin take his vocal breath...yknow because it's mixed as a studio version. What you are probably hearing is the backing track as JK and hobi literally harmonise with themselves often.
@kim No, they recorded it live, with the live band, so it's normal that we hear Jin's breath, they sang it live. But the audio and video have been edited after. Look at JK's mic position at 1:08 in the Tiny Desk Concert. It means they filmed at least two takes. It isn't the backing track because on this live the backing track is really really low, and the voice we hear is as loud as the mics. It's something I also noticed in their latest IDOL performance for Jimmy Fallon (I can tell it by looking at Yoongi's position during Jungkook's part in the second verse from 2:04 to 2:07)

dynamite has effect on their voices everytime they sing it live to match the studio version and the style but the other songs don't. You should definitely check the whole concert, it would be fun to watch!
All 3 songs had tuning, they do it in almost all performances nowadays i dont know why its kinda annoying i like their raw voices more, like in the Vmas performance you can hear it clearly..

Probably because they aren't in english. I love it when the UA-camrs I watch explore K-pop and BTS but the problem is 9/10 the never look at the lyrics or explaination. It's easier when the song is in English since you can understand it right off the bat. :/

I don't think it has anything to do with Dynamite in particular, a lot of their songs, especially the big hits, when performed live have this autotune that is so clearly heard which you most likely know already, and to me at least, it just makes the performance worse. I do agree though that Spring Day would have been much better, other good choices would be Make it right or Butterfly but ofc, those haven't been performed on tiny desk so they're not a choice but still
@@DecemberDaydreams As Roomie says, and everyone who has studied music knows, almost every solo, duo or group artist use autotune live to various extents, wether they be from East or West. But yes, it is very prevalent in Kpop, because Kpop is about selling the person, not necessarily about their voice. All Kpop groups get trained in singing, but in a Kpop group everyone has a role, main vocal, main dancer, even main visual (the "best looking person") is a real role in Kpop. So essentially, if you can do something well, other than singing, or you just have a lot of charisma, you can become a Kpop star. Even if you're not the best dancer or singer.
Idk personally I've heard the spring day tiny desk and the actual song. I've heard a lot of bts, and the only song I've ever come back to is dynamite. There's a reason it's all over everything. It's the song that the most people like

Raw version might be interpreted as just having a band is fine. I think someone should have told them to use zero autotune on their vocals. It's a case of miscommunication which might damage their reputation 🤷🏻. I personally think it didn't do too much damage as they had other songs with no autotune in the same video.
The use of autotune on the dynamite performance was a stylistic choice, to get that kinda distorted sound & to help get the retro vibe of the song. Not for pitch corrections. They performed 2 more songs with 0 tuning.

Yeah, I think it’s getting to this cusp of if he’s going to keep talking about bts, he should really get to know who he’s talking about. And also comment on any of their other songs- Dynamite is now the last song of their latest ALBUM, he could at the very least listen to it
The vibe of Harry's and Anderson. Paak's tiny desk concerts makes me think of BlackMediaPresents. I found them on reddit, they have such a funky, groovy vibe - which I usually don't like, especially with the resurgence of it in pop lately, but they do it well.
Anderson gets a pass cause he's just so good at it and also so versatile - while Come Down is funky as hell, other songs by him vary quite a bit more - Put Me Thru is more reggae-inspired, while Make it Better sounds like a classic Motown soul song and Bubblin' is a straight trap banger
Honestly on behalf of all armys i really hope one day roomie will do a deep-dive into bts because everyone who doesn't really know bts allwayysss underestimates them and think their popularity and fame is for nothing. I was once like that, thinking bts were bad because of their huge success and fame but when you actually learn abt them they defy all expectations. It will take a pretty long time but im also not sure if roomie will cause most if not all of their songs have a secret meaning/double meaning behind it and he mentioned earlier he doesn't like those songs. But I just want to show that bts are great singer, rappers, producers, songwriters, dancers, etc. But one thing I wanna tell roomie now is that bts weren't trained singers lmao jin was found one the literal street and the only people that were very passionate/trained ish in rapping or singing were namjoon yoongi and jk. All others weren't. Sorry if I made no sense its just because I have a lot of things to say.

I agree with you, these people have huge followings and their comments on artists also gives an idea to the viewers as they think he is a professional which he is, his viewers will surely take his comment about an artist pretty seriously, that's why I think he really should educate himself on bts, about their history and what their music is all about tbh I don't think he has ever dived in one of their discographies and read the translations which he should.

Kinda wish they included BTS's save me or Spring Day Performance instead of Dynamite in the ranking. Those two other songs are a lot more chill and the vocal techniques are more raw and dynamic compared to Dynamite, there's even some really nice harmonies. I personally think that tiny desk concert ver of save me and spring day offer a more authentic ver. of BTS's music compared to Dynamite
BTS recorded their Tiny Desk performance during quarantine. Which is why they used their own band and sound. Either way, the audio mastering engineer was Josh Rogosin (who does all audio in Tiny Desk concerts) so it was his call in the end.
It's a shame that whoever compiled this list didn't include Spring Day over Dynamite for BTS! That performance is easily one of my faves of that song; it manages to get me emotional every time, especially when you take in the true value of the lyrics.

I think the main reason BTS used autotune here might have something to do with the song being in english (to kind of make up for the accents), not sure how autotune really works tho so i can't tell you for sure.
Jin literally hates English and I don't blame him...also I think it's for the rapper's also. We need to realise that RM and Suga don't sing. Dynamite has no rap in it. That auto tune is probably to compensate for that.

BTS has autotune on dynamite (i don't really know why neither) but they sing without any for the two other songs performed on the TDC (Spring day and Save me). It's a bit sad that your editor chose to put Dynamite and not the others. Save me and Spring day are totally worth listening to !
bts's tiny desk concert wasn't in the tiny desk studio, it was filmed in korea by themselves (because it was during quarantine obviously) and then sent to npr, so they pretty much had to recreate the whole set and vibe as best as they can. i don't get how having a live band of 3 people breaks the rules of tiny desk (something along the lines of joel's comment at 12:50) since other artists before them, even in this very video, had multiple musicians on the same instruments behind them too but okay... the song is more upbeat or at least has a different vibe than the others in the video so it sounds more full to him than the acoustic renditions of the others or something? i don't know. anyways, the "autotune" does not cover up their vocals, what you hear is live vocals, it's just a post-edited effect on the mic and it's to add to the effect of the song. there's less of it in the other 2 songs in their set. they still killed it vocally and that is what you hear. i'm not trying to be aggresive here, just explaining the details. i'd love for joel to watch the whole thing and try and objectively comment on their vocals because they do shine through in the performance.

I get what you mean, but the appeal of Tiny desk which Joel refers to was the acoustics and not just more or less people. Dynamite is an upbeat song, yes, but imagine it on like just 2 guitars or smthin, that would've worked better imo. Plus I'm sure there wasn't any hard autotuning and mixing in the other versions cause autotune tends to make stuff sound less "raw" which is what I hoped for at least. I haven't heard the other so can't comment on those

It only took Harry one day to write “Watermelon Sugar” lyrically. However, It took much longer to actually finish the song because at first he really liked it and then for a while he really hated it but it kept coming back into the mix. (Info. from one of his Capital FM interviews as well as the Tiny Desk Concert)

here a year later just to say that tbsl is one of my favorite HS songs of all time. the vibe is over the roof, the instrumental is so unique and refreshing, the lyrics are interesting and kinda relatable. it's just such a good song over all. it's a shame that it's not a single so more people would know about it existence. even harry's fans don't really pay much attention to it, but, y'know, it's their own loss.

I've seen a lot of singers doing online "acoustic" performances in quarantine, some have very subtle sound effects, but most of them aren't "100% live with no production over their voices". Same goes for people who make covers or youtuber singers, almost all of them have post-production in their "acoustic" songs, it's the norm. I've heard people saying that we are so accustomed and dissensitised that we don't realise, or we may think "they sang badly" or "something was off" if the performances didn't have any virtual production...
So, nowadays we assume that "the singer is using autotune" only when people use it as a voice distortion effect (not for pitch correction), because that's more obvious (it's the case with BTS's Dynamite for example)... But, in reality, most mainstream musicians are using stuff in all their performances, even they ones that seem acoustic.

To everyone wondering why it took Harry so long to write watermelon sugar: As far as I know, it’s not like he’s been working on watermelon sugar for three years nonstop - he just started working on it and didn’t really know how to bring everything together so that he’s happy with the result, so he pushed it to the side for a little bit and came back to it later when basically all the other songs for fine line were already done (if I remember correctly).
I understand him it happened also with Suga he's the lead rapper of BTS and he's also a big fan of watermelon sugar high ,he wrote and producer a song called "tomorrow" when he was 19 but he released it when he became 21 in 2014 it's actually an RnB song you can check it out

I knew that the dynamite performance was tuned however I was curious about what you said about it being added later, so I checked out the stage cam again to check and it does sound like that’s the case since the stage cam sounds much more raw. It sounded good as well so now I’m confused as to why they decided to tune it so much.

Yeah, it would be SO COOL. But since Dynamite is an English song, it's always the song that gets shown when BTS appears in the video. And in my opinion, Dynamite isn't really their best song. Especially that tiny desk performans isn't really their best performance. There are still LOTS OF content to watch out there to understand their music better.

Joel also usually goes to read/review the lyrics after watching a music video, he could do the same with a song in a foreign language. In fact, he has done this in the past. And unlike other singers, you can actually find good translations for BTS songs. Also, he has already heard Dynamite and didn't like it that much, so listening to another song would have made more sense. It's not a big deal though, his observation was fair and expected too.

PS If you see this Roomie, here’s my take on the autotune with BTS: I really appreciate Tiny Desk, but these times the industry hasn’t entirely “embraced” K-Pop and international artists in general, so they did BTS dirty. Like actually translating Korean lyrics for BTS and Blackpink instead of putting (Singing in a foreign language) in subtitles, for example. And I’ve noticed that a lot of the mainstream music industry is still treating K-Pop (And other international music.) like it’s some exotic thing that no one will understand or like, when the joke is all on them. LOOK AT HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE INTO KPOP OR AT LEAST HEARD OF/RESPECT IT! I’m begging this part of the music industry to at least compensate as much as they can for international artists, especially Kpop artists, their lyrics are actually very meaningful😇

You're taking it too seriously. Many fandoms have extremely cancerous fans, and BTS is yuge as music group. I don't listen to any Kpop and am well aware of them due to how damn popular they are. Roomie's channel is the only real exposure I have to Kpop, but I get the context. Particularly for crazy music stans, it's an odd kind of zealous behavior lol. BUT it works in similar ways for all kinds of subjects. Video games have certain games/platforms known for being super toxic like League of Legends or Modern Warfare 2 lobbies on Xbox Live (good ole days tho lol). Or with fitness how some people are the biggest stans to Jeff Cavaliere and think he can do literally no wrong when he has. Or in sports with the constant Michael Jordan v Lebron James debates. Honestly, I agree, Dynamite was not their best performance in that concert, there were better songs they performed, like Spring Day, yes it's less upbeat, but there's much less autotune and the vocals sound more raw, they just did better on it overall. Dynamite is definitely BTS's most overplayed song yet, I'd like to see you branch out to some of their other less known songs.

Honestly I agree with the BTS auto tune thing. I love their songs and they're great artist no doubt, but the autotune is just...too much for me sometimes. I try not to think about it too much so I can enjoy it

I agree with you - the autotune in dynamite is too heavy for me too.
Same, I really wanted that rawness but never got it. The label has a tendency to always slap a good amount of auto tune on their vocals in the after mix which is honestly so annoying.

I’ve listened to songs in in multiple different languages that I don’t know (Korean, Japanese, Irish, Spanish, French, German...just to name a few) but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying the music...and it’s broadened my musical horizons...and if I really like it, I will dive into the lyric translations, but then, I’m a lyrics person...

I will admit, that BTS is one of the few groups that really grab my attention, because they are so unique...but that doesn’t mean that I don’t recognize that other groups have worked hella hard to be where they are, even if their music doesn’t grab me in the same way.

Joel I always appreciate your reactions. But did the editors really have to pick Dynamite. Save me or Spring are much better songs that actually showcase the vocal and rap range in their own language with proper live vocals. You can even hear Jin breath when singing those tracks. Dynamite has stylistic autotune especially for RM and Suga because they aren't vocalists at all they are rapper's...there's no rap in this song.
But they used autotune for their whole Tiny Desk Concert, even if they didn't used as much as for Dynamite for the other songs, so I think Joel would have said the same thing for Save ME or Spring Day. And the whole concert is mixed after the recording, like an actual studio song, and they made multiple takes. If you don't believe me, just look at how Jungkook is harmonizing with Taehyung in the second verse of Dynamite. (sorry for my English, it isn't my first language)

If it was mixed as a studio version you wouldn't be able to hear Jin take his vocal breath...yknow because it's mixed as a studio version. What you are probably hearing is the backing track as JK and hobi literally harmonise with themselves often.
@kim No, they recorded it live, with the live band, so it's normal that we hear Jin's breath, they sang it live. But the audio and video have been edited after. Look at JK's mic position at 1:08 in the Tiny Desk Concert. It means they filmed at least two takes. It isn't the backing track because on this live the backing track is really really low, and the voice we hear is as loud as the mics. It's something I also noticed in their latest IDOL performance for Jimmy Fallon (I can tell it by looking at Yoongi's position during Jungkook's part in the second verse from 2:04 to 2:07)

dynamite has effect on their voices everytime they sing it live to match the studio version and the style but the other songs don't. You should definitely check the whole concert, it would be fun to watch!
All 3 songs had tuning, they do it in almost all performances nowadays i dont know why its kinda annoying i like their raw voices more, like in the Vmas performance you can hear it clearly..

I don't think it has anything to do with Dynamite in particular, a lot of their songs, especially the big hits, when performed live have this autotune that is so clearly heard which you most likely know already, and to me at least, it just makes the performance worse. I do agree though that Spring Day would have been much better, other good choices would be Make it right or Butterfly but ofc, those haven't been performed on tiny desk so they're not a choice but still

But yes, it is very prevalent in Kpop, because Kpop is about selling the person, not necessarily about their voice.
All Kpop groups get trained in singing, but in a Kpop group everyone has a role, main vocal, main dancer, even main visual (the "best looking person") is a real role in Kpop.
So essentially, if you can do something well, other than singing, or you just have a lot of charisma, you can become a Kpop star. Even if you're not the best dancer or singer.

Raw version might be interpreted as just having a band is fine. I think someone should have told them to use zero autotune on their vocals. It's a case of miscommunication which might damage their reputation 🤷🏻. I personally think it didn't do too much damage as they had other songs with no autotune in the same video.
The use of autotune on the dynamite performance was a stylistic choice, to get that kinda distorted sound & to help get the retro vibe of the song. Not for pitch corrections. They performed 2 more songs with 0 tuning.
Even if there were pitch corrections, it will obviously be very noticeable. But I think what’s different for BTS, they sang most of it in tune

The vibe of Harry's and Anderson. Paak's tiny desk concerts makes me think of BlackMediaPresents. I found them on reddit, they have such a funky, groovy vibe - which I usually don't like, especially with the resurgence of it in pop lately, but they do it well.
Anderson gets a pass cause he's just so good at it and also so versatile - while Come Down is funky as hell, other songs by him vary quite a bit more - Put Me Thru is more reggae-inspired, while Make it Better sounds like a classic Motown soul song and Bubblin' is a straight trap banger
you can find some of the best live vocals of bts in their concert videos especially the one in saudi arabia or the final in seoul they’re flawless
Honestly on behalf of all armys i really hope one day roomie will do a deep-dive into bts because everyone who doesn't really know bts allwayysss underestimates them and think their popularity and fame is for nothing. I was once like that, thinking bts were bad because of their huge success and fame but when you actually learn abt them they defy all expectations. It will take a pretty long time but im also not sure if roomie will cause most if not all of their songs have a secret meaning/double meaning behind it and he mentioned earlier he doesn't like those songs. But I just want to show that bts are great singer, rappers, producers, songwriters, dancers, etc. But one thing I wanna tell roomie now is that bts weren't trained singers lmao jin was found one the literal street and the only people that were very passionate/trained ish in rapping or singing were namjoon yoongi and jk. All others weren't. Sorry if I made no sense its just because I have a lot of things to say.

Dynamite was the most autotuned out of the 3 song they sang. It was a sytlistic choise for the retro sound. Kinda wish they included BTS's save me or Spring Day Performance instead of Dynamite in the ranking. Those two other songs are a lot more chill and the vocal techniques are more raw and dynamic compared to Dynamite, there's even some really nice harmonies. I personally think that tiny desk concert ver of save me and spring day offer a more authentic ver. of BTS's music compared to Dynamite

BTS recorded their Tiny Desk performance during quarantine. Which is why they used their own band and sound.
Either way, the audio mastering engineer was Josh Rogosin (who does all audio in Tiny Desk concerts) so it was his call in the end.
But if it was BigHit who did their audio you would literally hear their raw vocals in dynamite😂
It's a shame that whoever compiled this list didn't include Spring Day over Dynamite for BTS! That performance is easily one of my faves of that song; it manages to get me emotional every time, especially when you take in the true value of the lyrics.

I think the main reason BTS used autotune here might have something to do with the song being in english (to kind of make up for the accents), not sure how autotune really works tho so i can't tell you for sure.

Having never heard of Chika before seeing her tiny desk concert, she blew me away with her talent, definitely #1 in my books.
bts's tiny desk concert wasn't in the tiny desk studio, it was filmed in korea by themselves (because it was during quarantine obviously) and then sent to npr, so they pretty much had to recreate the whole set and vibe as best as they can. i don't get how having a live band of 3 people breaks the rules of tiny desk (something along the lines of joel's comment at 12:50) since other artists before them, even in this very video, had multiple musicians on the same instruments behind them too but okay... the song is more upbeat or at least has a different vibe than the others in the video so it sounds more full to him than the acoustic renditions of the others or something? i don't know. anyways, the "autotune" does not cover up their vocals, what you hear is live vocals, it's just a post-edited effect on the mic and it's to add to the effect of the song. there's less of it in the other 2 songs in their set. they still killed it vocally and that is what you hear. i'm not trying to be aggresive here, just explaining the details. i'd love for joel to watch the whole thing and try and objectively comment on their vocals because they do shine through in the performance.

I get what you mean, but the appeal of Tiny desk which Joel refers to was the acoustics and not just more or less people. Dynamite is an upbeat song, yes, but imagine it on like just 2 guitars or smthin, that would've worked better imo. Plus I'm sure there wasn't any hard autotuning and mixing in the other versions cause autotune tends to make stuff sound less "raw" which is what I hoped for at least. I haven't heard the other so can't comment on those
