  • We stay in Cades Cove and hike the same paths of Dennis Martin, a 6 year old boy that went missing in 1969. Come explore the mysteries behind Dennis's disappearance and take RV Living in our truck camper to the camp ground in the center of it all. Thank you to our Green Beret pal for stepping in as our camera man and enduring a brief interview about the case!

You did a good job on the Martin case. I participated in the search for two days beginning the morning after Dennis vanished. I was 16 and drove the 40 miles from home to Cades Cove & hiked to Spence Field. There were probably 75-100 persons there with 2-3 men directing groups around the rest area where Dennis’ dad & grandfather sat. What isn’t being reported is the extremely dense, impassable undergrowth and the exact way Dennis disappeared. The boys decided to walk around the back of the shack and each emerge back to the front porch where William Martin sat. One boy came around the opposite side from where he entered the woods but Dennis failed to make the 360 degree circle to the front. He said he did not see Dennis as he circled behind the building. Immediately dad & grandad began calling out, the brother & cousin (?) retraced their steps. No answer, no sign of Dennis. The undergrowth was so thick it wasn’t possible for a 4 foot, 50 pound kid to penetrate it. The grandad hiked 8-9 miles to the ranger station & dad remained near the rest area. When my 4 friends and I arrived we were assigned to a group and began hacking our way through heavy bushes, brambles and it took 20 minutes to move 10 feet. We all realized that a 6 year old could not have traveled out of voice range in 5-10 minutes. The only passable ground was on the trail. By the time men in uniforms arrived we had covered our part of the grid for almost a mile. I’m now 70 and remember those two days clearly and know that someone must have taken Dennis. How did they get to a vehicle without being seen unless they travelled that first night? Why didn’t Dennis call out? At the time it was reported that Dennis was healthy but behind in terms of mental development and that he may not realize his abduction wasn’t a game. Family stated that he “might not respond” as they called out to him but that he would not stray far from his family. Later, he was said to have been a “normal six year old”. My friends & I left thinking that Dennis was nowhere near the rest shelter. Had he moved off the trail he couldn’t have gone more than a few yards due to the impenetrable forest & brutally difficult undergrowth.
Sometime after the search police searched the family’s property in Knoxville, TN, including an excavation of the back yard area. There were rumors that Dennis didn’t make the trip & may have met with foul play. No trace was found at or near the family home to support this. It is difficult to imagine how this small child disappeared from the face of the earth in less than 10 minutes on terrain he could not have traversed. Hundreds of persons, both professional & volunteers covered miles of ground & found only one footprint the father said was not Dennis’. 2-3 years later a ginseng poacher reported a child’s skeleton but three years had passed & it was never located. A truly baffling case.

That’s fascinating to hear a first hand account ! Thank you for telling your story! We agree it seems he was probably taken and may have not realized the severity of his situation, and maybe thought it was a game. Truly a baffling story with all the twists and turns . We just hope he didn’t suffer.

In a closed community like the US ARMY Special Forces, I know your friend was told what happened by his peers. Unfortunately telling it to the public would be for him illegal under threat of prosecution and imprisonment. Such a tragic thing what happened to that precious child. I pray he didn't suffer and his end was swift. Rest in peace Dennis-you are so deeply loved and by no means have you been forgotten.

Don't forget to mention the man in a car that sped off that was seen the same time Dennis was missing and the people that seen the man said he was sweating and the scream from a boy was heard in the same area as the man was seen the man hurried in his car and sped off spinning his tires in the gravel

I did a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail in 2020 and tried so hard to find this place in particular, but never was able to. Surprisingly, none of the other hikers I met had ever heard of Spence Field or Dennis Martin.
That being said, Smokey Mountains was, and still is to this day, my absolute favorite part of the AT. It's just absolutely amazing. I also took a 4-day rest in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They, too, were amazing and TONS of fun (but very "touristy")
    Excellent video, thanks!

That’s an impressive feat! It’s a tricky spot to find, when we filmed there I don’t think the people staying the night in the shelter had heard the story either.

It sounds to me that the shoe was evidence and the skull and human decomposing were most likely the little boy.😢the boy most likely died of hyperthermia. The fact that it was stormy and he just kept walking fast or running, crying for help and extremely frightened. This is such a sad story. I can not imagine the sorrow that the family carried all these years. I use to hike with two other friends in the northern Rockies elevation above 4000 ft and you new to get off the mountain when the sun was going down.
