  • Watch a diesel hauled train go through Chennai as 01017 Mumbai LTT - Karaikal Express Special makes it back on tracks for the first time after the COVID19 Lockdowns.
The first run of 01017 that commenced its journey on April 17, 2021 was hauled by Kalyan WDP-4D 40361 from LTT to Chennai Egmore. From Egmore, the train was take over by WAP7 30392 based from Royapuram. It is understood that the loco was expected to haul the train all the way up to Karaikal, but due to some technical issues, the diesel loco had to be detached at Madras Egmore, leaving Electrics to take over.
This video contains three captures of the train, though all of them didn't go as planned. The first capture is from KM 11/400 between Korattur and Villivakkam. The second capture is from Chennai Fort and the third near River Adyar between Saidapet and Guindy.
With Southern Railway's Mainline being electrified, all the diesel links from/to Chennai had got vanished. This train being a weekly, gets a Diesel link end to end in order to eliminate difficulties in Loco Sharing Arrangement (LSA) and also make the best use of the diesel locos.
01017 / 01018 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus - Karaikal Express is a weekly train service that runs between the Kurla Terminus in Mumbai and Karaikal (KIK) in Pondicherry and is 11017 / 11018 in disguise. It is operated by the Central Railway with LHB coaches. This train shares its rake with 11011 / 11012 Bombay LTT - Nanded Express.
