Hugely ambitious. I should probably pick up a Blade book if I can squeeze it in.

Oh man Twins of Evil is such a fun movie. High recommend for anyone who wants to hear Grand Moff Tarkin exclaim "The devil has sent me Twins of EVIL!". Not to mention the Collinson sisters truly are gorgeous.

      My Garbaugust tbr stack includes:
      1. In "Anything goes" I'm reading (at least) Beach House by R.L. Stein and Whisper of Death by Christopher Pike
      2. "Men's Adventure" I'm bending the rules a touch and reading the men's adventure flavored vampire horror novel Nightblood by T. Chris Martindale
      3. For "Sex and/or Violence" I had to go with the king of the rumps himself Richard Laymon and I'm reading Endless Night
      4. Lastly for "Novelization" I'm reading "Owen West's" (Dean Koontz) novelization of Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse and then rewatching The Funhouse

So I am a relatively new subscriber. I don't always "get" the trash stuff , but heavens I enjoy this channel. And I have picked up a few really good recommendations. Olly, you are a charming and endlessly knowledgeable nut case. I think I love you...don't tell my husband. Anyone who includes Colleen Hoover with the trash is golden in my book.

GarbAugust should be a breeze for you. You only have to read 258 pages per day. Nothing but pudding, lol.
    You’ll have a blast, I’m sure.

I read the Doc Savage story _The Land of Terror_ in 2022. Fighting dinosaurs is always fun. When you read the book, see if you can spot the clues before Doc Savage does.

"I'm looking forward ot that one... I think" 🤣 You definitely have an exciting month ahead of you. I don't have any overlapping titles, but a few overlapping authors. Plus I already read and reviewed the SGJ book, which I enjoyed quite a bit. (How he managed to release 2 books in a year that were both centered around classical horror slashers and not have the books feel like they were treading the same ground was impressive!)

8000 pages makes me fear for your sanity. Kind of a rec because I don't want to be the tipping point but a weird one is the novelization of the 3D 1950s movie Hondo starring John Wayne. The movie was based on a Louis L'Amour short story and then L'Amour did a novelization (with a cover blurb by John Wayne) when the movie came out. And it's under 200 pages.

Right. So - oh by the way, before I get into my own selections, I should hold off for just a second, and bow before your incredibly awesome pile-up of picks for GarbAugust …
So. This will be my first indulgence in the Event. That said, I’m going to try not to buy any more books for GarbAugust - I’m just gonna try and ram a few square pegs into some round holes, and go with what I own! But it’s not that bad…because I was on vacation a few weeks ago, and ran around the city to various Used bookstores, shopping with intent to pick up a few books for GarbAugust. In that light, things are better than they could be. I’m lacking, though, in outright Romance fiction, and men’s adventure books. Nevertheless, the following is the TBR - and know that in some cases, the trashiness of the book may be somewhat debatable, but at least in a few cases I’m happy to have found a book that fits a prompt’s intent, with maybe just a smidge of trash.
    My books:
The Golem of Brooklyn, by Adam Mansbach/Modern Trash (debatable pick, but it’s the best I can do; there seem to be trashy aspects, a monster educated by trashy pop-culture, slick humour - I’m going with it)
The Black Lizard, by Edogawa Rampo/Trash in Translation (of the limited amount of books I have handy in translation, it’s gonna have to be this; I can’t pick Simenon or Kafka, etc.)
The Cat Wears a Noose, by Dolores Hitchens/Cozy Mystery with Cats (this seems to fit perfectly)
The Killing Floor, by Arthur Lyons/Green on the Cover (sorry, Hosts, but I’m detaching Green on the Cover from Cozy Mystery with Cats, and doing it as a separate prompt, instead of Host Recommendation; now, before you all hate me, I will try and do some research as we go along, and try and include some kind of host recommendation)
The Diamond Bikini, by Charles Williams/Nudity on the Cover (it depends on the cover of the edition…but we’re fine, here)
Kidnapped by Cannibals, by Gordon Stables/Wouldn’t Read on the Bus (if anything hasn’t aged well and will offend, it should be this one from 1899)
The Tingler Unleashed, by Gary J. Rose/3D Movie or Stepback Cover (NOTE: this is a NEXT DAY EDIT, as it seems I completely skipped this prompt, initially; to make matters worse, I don't think I have any stepback covers handy...but I had put on order the novel The Tingler Unleashed, which is tied to the 1959 Vincent Price movie The Tingler, which I love; the film The Tingler was technically not a 3D film...but a certain "interactive" facet of the film - a tingling effect created in some moviegoers' seats - made it something more than mere "2D", let's say. Anyway, this is probably the best I can do, on the assumption the book shows up on time!)
Minor Hauntings: Chilling Tales of Spectral Youth, edited by Jen Baker/Killer Kids (I hope we get some real young’uns in here, along with any older youths - and of course we’re in ghostly territory here - but I think this is an okay pick; all I’ve got, anyway)
Suicide Squad, Volume 8: Constriction/Cults (Kobra Cult; NOTE: this is a NEXT DAY EDIT for a better pick; I have removed The White Goddess, by Robert Graves)
The Traveling Vampire Show, by Richard Laymon/Sexy Vampires (well, I hope they’re sexy - because I think they’re my only vamps, right now)
Foreign and Domestic, by A. J. Tata/Vigilantes (did a quick check of the plot synopsis of this book I’ve had for ages, and I think we’re good to go, for Vigilantes)
Dead Drunk: Tales of Intoxication and Demon Drinks, edited by Pam Lock/Moral Panic
Five Little Pigs, by Agatha Christie/Long Running Series
Doctor Who: Eater Of Wasps, by Trevor Baxendale/Killer Animals (this will be a re-read, as I’m surprisingly light on available options)
Power Play, by Joseph Finder/Conspiracy Theory (I’m going with my gut, here, based on the synopsis)
Bulldog Drummond, by Sapper/Pseudonym (supposed to be trashy, and no, his parents did not name him Sapper…)
The Punisher: Assassin's Guild, by Jo Duffy & Jorge Zaffino/More than 2 Guns on the Cover (NOTE: this is a NEXT DAY EDIT, to replace my scheme of having two novels combined, in order to get up to 3 guns; obviously it's more in the spirit of the prompt to have one actual book that truly qualifies)
Based on a Video Game is a real problem for me. Hmm. I’m gonna put in a graphic novel called Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass and Sorcery…so comics will stand in for video games, in my GarbWorld. Sorry.
The Cold Summer, by Gianrico Carofiglio/Gangs (this could be the one where I’m at the least trashy, but at least have something tied to Gangs. Or, it’s actually trashy.)
It hurts to admit it, but nothing I have handy has an exclamation point as part of the title! So…I will double up on front-cover nudity, and sneak in Death on the Double, by Henry Kane
The Pulps, edited by Tony Goodstone/Weirdly Specific Sub-genre (well, I don’t know if a short story collection of pulp fiction is the best choice for this, but this is where I’ve landed)
The Discipline: The Seduction, by Peter Milligan & Leandro Fernandez/Kinky Sex (a re-read of a pretty reviled graphic novel; NOTE: this is a NEXT DAY EDIT - I have put this in in place of my original pick, A Game of Thrones, which didn't seem quite right)
The D’Arblay Mystery, by R. Austin Freeman/Drugs (dubious Drugs pick? Well, we have a death by lethal injection, here, and not many other workable books on my shelf, so…)
Things pretty bleak on the Ninja/Martial Arts front, for me. I will pick something that is hanging on by its fingernails: Stopover Tokyo, by John P. Marquand
Murder Gone Mad, by Philip MacDonald/Giallo (slash) Slasher (at least I can end with something that fits perfectly!)
The Talking Clock, by Frank Gruber/Bonus Pick (NOTE: this is a NEXT DAY EDIT, because I can't let GarbAugust pass without reading this, and I originally had it under 'More Than 2 Guns', combined with another book, as a sort of cheat for the prompt)

My favorite thing about Andrew Neiderman writing the V.C. Andrews books was, for a long time you'd see blurbs from "V.C. Andrews" on Andrew Neiderman novels. Like, "Andrew Neiderman is one of the greatest horror writers ever! - V. C. Andrews." That always cracks me up.
A NASCAR romance... I can only imagine. "I'll marry you... but only after I defeat Dale Earnhardt in the Talledega 500!" Romance is always a weird genre. There are loads and loads of "motorcycle gang romance novels," and a really popular thing seems to be Amish romances. Odd stuff.

28 books totalling 8000 pages! 😲Holy trash, Olly - that's dedication. I'm up to 22 on my list, but I've got fair few novellas and some graphic novels and pulp mags, so my page count is way lower. Will still give me a challenge tho! I've got an Executioner on my list too - I'm going with Vegas Vendetta (no.9). Looking forward to it, really enjoyed the one I read last year, and it nicely ticks off several bingo squares! I nearly went with Lace too, but then I saw the page count and thought better of it. Super Mario Bros movie novelisation - oh my. The things we do for GarbAugust. Will look forward to hearing whether the book is as bad as the film! 😆Have fun, mate - great pile of trash to keep you entertained for the month.

I read The Image of the Beast earlier this year and enjoyed it. He wrote a sequel as well and they were repackaged together in later printings. I read it digitally and it wasn’t clear when it changed from one book to the other except for a drastic tone shift which really threw me off.

Holy shit, you've got Colleen Hoover on your TBR. I gather she is exceedingly popular but, from everything I've seen on here, also exceedingly bad. Have you got the version of Verity with the epilogue? It apparently makes quite a difference (whether for better or worse I don't know; I've seen arguments in both directions).

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  2 місяці тому +1

I’ve read one other book by her and it was okay. Looks like I don’t have the epilogue but can download it (if I remember lol)
