  • Finally reached a milestone in my build! 95% complete and will install an aircon and a few interior touches then finished. Thanks to all who stayed with me to this point and new comers as well.
    If interested in my build along the way, please see my other videos where I explain every step and segment of the construction in detail.
    If you are interested in buying some of the same hardware I used to build my van--see below.

    This van is beyond beautiful; cosy, well thought design and top craftmanship. I love it when people just follow their dreams and just start building and turn out to be a top carpenter, designer, engineer, etc.

      Wow thank you! That means a lot! Of all the great comments I got from people this one might just be the best and I sincerely appreciate it. I’m planning my first across the ocean ferry trip with it to a remote island this weekend which is precisely the whole concept of why I built it. To go to super remote places and then have really comfortable amenities like a hot shower and sleep in a real bed and cook a gourmet meal etc.

      Thank you so much and this is probably the nicest comment I’ve ever received. I thought about this design in my mind for about a year before I actually started building it. I wanted to have some luxury amenities with the ability to stop and stay anywhere and be able to cook a gourmet meal, take a hot shower and sleep in a full bed surrounded by a log cabin and wildlife theme. The lighting and my camera equipment wasn’t great when I first started but I’ve upgraded everything and am trying to improve my editing. Thanks again!

    I had the Campchef stove/oven propane in my camper van as well. I loved it but I accidentally left my gas bottle open one night and the small regulator on the back of the Campchef ruptured and gas stared spraying out of it. The noise woke me up and my dog started thrashing around. I got out quickly then I went back in to turned my bottle off. When I got home I ripped that Campchef out and installed a Greystone with a better regulator. When they only claim their unit to be an outdoor oven they are correct.

    • @vanoffgrid
      @vanoffgrid  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for sharing your story. I’m very careful with just that situation and even disconnect the bottle off the on-demand water heater before travel and bed. I also have a few gas detectors throughout the cabin just to make sure if a bottle starts to leak or Engine carbon monoxide. And I only cook with all the doors open. Appreciate it!

    I was impressed with all the creative woodwork (laminated ones) and the bits of higuma/kuma motif around the place. But I was more impressed that you managed to do ALL of this conversion onto a Nissan van! It gives me hope for converting Asian brand vans. I only thought that Toyota vans were the only viable choices for camper conversions due to their spacious variants. You've proven me wrong especially since you've also managed to install a dedicated shower/toilet stall INside the van. I can't wait to see what you have in mind for a Nissan truck camper conversion, i.e. if it's ever up for consideration.

    • @vanoffgrid
      @vanoffgrid  Рік тому +1

      Thank you very much for such an awesome compliment! Actually Nissan makes a wider NV350 that is 1.8 meters wide. Mine is 1.65 meters wide. After searching for about five months to buy the wider one they were either way too expensive or just not available so I went with the smaller one. This made me completely redesign the whole interior as it is now. The wider version I had the kitchen upfront and the shower/toilet was in the rear. And that design even included a real fireplace. So one confession though I don’t really stand up when I take a shower it’s easier for me to kneel down. I do get a lot of compliments on it as it feels like a small log cabin inside and that is exactly what I wanted to create. The reason I did not go with the Toyota hiace is because the floors are actually on top of the rear wheel wells so even though it’s a high roof you can’t stand up. I do know there are different versions of the van in different countries but here I couldn’t find the lower floor. The Nissan offers the floor countersunk about maybe 15 inches lower than the top of the rear wheel wells so that lets me just about stand up all the way in my wife can completely stand up without any problems. Space is limited but it’s just enough for the two of us to really enjoy it and not feel too cramped. Thanks again! Happy camping!

      @vanoffgrid  Рік тому +1

      @@davidpatrick1813 that’s a great idea. I can do a talking video and even re-tape the floor and then show the inside of the van explaining it all. You have a great point that my channel starts with building the van but for many people including me there was a lot of stress and difficulty in planning way before I got to that point without owning the actual vehicle yet and that is something my UA-cam channel doesn’t cover so thank you for pointing that out.

      @@vanoffgrid Another idea … play with designs for other rigs in the future… even if not upgrading. I think your van build is great! I am wondering tho how water that end up on the corrugated metal walls in the shower runs down and ends up in the shower pan? it looks like it would drip down past the sides and go under the pan.

    • @vanoffgrid
      @vanoffgrid  Рік тому

      Hey I appreciate your compliment and question. The shower pan has a raised lip around it on 3 sides. The open side is for the door to swing closed and I added a water proofed piece of wood to act as a lip. The water completely falls inside the pan on all sides. You can find the shower pan in an itemized link in the description which will take you to Amazon and you can see some pictures of the pan to see what I mean. Hello- it was about $10k for supplies. I ordered about $6k worth of supplies from Amazon US and the rest was from Japan Amazon and local hardware stores. Most expensive items: Battery was $1100, and with solar system, and inverter $3000, granite tiles $800, sink $300, flooring $200, water heater $160-the remaining near $5000 was a mix up of tools, wood, screws, adhesive, wires and lights. I started buying supplies about 5 months before the build or even buying the van. Slowly acquired parts first then was able to build without too many delays. And being on an island means I have a two week wait time on shipping anything. It was an amazing experience! And the amazing people it has let me meet and the travels. All positive.

      Hi thank you for the comment. My tires are D rated Bridgestones and the size is 195/80R15. There are many configurations of this van and mine is a max payload cargo type. Can handle 1150 KG. I weighed every piece of material I introduced into it and I’m sitting at about 500 KG so I’m less than half of the max payload so absolutely no problems and it drives super nice.

      @@joejudd2576 actually not that well when the temps were over 100 degrees but now that it’s cooler it can keep up better. It was a fun project but I may change to an electric cooler next year. My tires were nearly brand new with the van so that’s why I’m using them for a couple years. Figured I paid for them with the purchase so might as well use them. I will upgrade to some all terrains next.

      @@joejudd2576 well maybe depends on what type of terrain you normally drive over and if snow and ice terrains. If you live in a cold place then all-terrains are actually not good on icy roads in my opinion. The rubber is too hard and slippery when cold. But great in light mud, sand, gravel and rocky terrains.

    Did you have to put fire protectant on or around the walls of your camping stove?

    • @vanoffgrid
      @vanoffgrid  Рік тому +1

      Hey thanks for your question. With Japanese law- yes-I had to put fire proof sheeting around the stove/oven only. So I went with metal sheeting on all sides. And there’s about a 2 inch space from the stove walls and the sheeting for heat dissipation. It stays nice and cool around it. Really safe.

    • @vanoffgrid
      @vanoffgrid  Рік тому +1

      @@Locd4life707 hey go ahead and use it. The oven is double walled so the outside walls aren’t nearly as hot as inside. You can’t touch it hot- but as long as there’s a small airspace around the outside walls and the fire sheeting, then you will be good. The first time I used it- I stood-by with a bucket of water and fire extinguisher and took it all the way to 550 degrees. I realized then that it’s fire safe and we really enjoy it. Happy camping!

      The cabin is insulated- if you look at my earlier build videos you’ll see what I did. I don’t t have window covers and haven’t needed them. I live in Okinawa which is subtropical and around 75 degrees half the year.

      Thanks for your honest comment and you are absolutely right. I filmed it with a GoPro 10 which has a super wide kinda fish eye lens. I just bought a full high end set up - X-H2S camera. I plan to make my first video this weekend with it. And will do another full review soon in much higher quality. I wasn’t that serious about UA-cam in the beginning so I didn’t invest a lot into it but now that I’m over 500 subs and things are moving pretty quickly for me I decided to just get the equipment necessary to produce much higher quality videos. Thanks again
