By the time you had Dreamcast footage playing I was filled with disgust and delight in equal measure. The screen is objectively too small for any of this... but this is wonderful. I'm so pleased somebody did this, and thank you for uploading footage of what the GG TV Tuner looked/looks like in action (which was what I was originally searching for)
You should look up gamecube being played on a gba

I want one now! Such a time machine. I remember the TV feature was something that I wanted so bad as a kid, but both that and the game gear were out of my price range and was lucky to have an NES & Genesis at the time...

Really cool. Back in the 90s I had my Game Gear with TV Tuner sitting on my computer desk so I could watch cartoons while surfing the net.
Of course, I'm sure this mod cuts the battery life in half for the Game Gear, which is why the video is only 3:30.... All 6 AA batteries would be dead before 5 minutes passed XD

That's pretty awesome. I had a Game Gear growing up and I really wanted that TV tuner. Only had like 3 games, woulda been nice if I coulda watched The Simpsons and Martin on it.
Great job! It's like using the casette player in old cars to get an Aux connection or bluetooth connection to modern tech, love the idea.
Game Gear was ahead of its time, it flew too close to the sun, too expensive, poor battery life, basically just a proof of concept.
Wonder how this would look with a McWill screen?
Better then it does with the stock screen I'm sure if it is even compatible

I remember when I had one of these the batteries used to run out so fast my dad bought me a pack of those rechargeable batteries and I would play this all day and switch out the batteries. I used to have Sonic and I think the other game was Castlevania.
Really cool! I think however that the game gear would be more suited to being used in a DIY Retropie machine, rather than a portable Roku. Other than that, very nice!

lol I remember really wanting that TV turner for the game gear, but my parents would never buy it for me :( But, they did allow me to get a portable TV back then, cause we found one pretty cheap at the time and I took that thing everywhere, I just loved the idea of taking a TV anywhere. But now... seems really stupid compared to the tech we have today. Taking your "TV anywhere" is basically just taking your phone with you now. Which is another funny thing to me, since my family used to have those horrible car phones that never worked unless you were in a big city. Well, at least in my area it didn't work unless we were. Good ol 80s!

No, it won't. The TV Tuner doesn't work with IPS Screens, since they use the TV pin in the Game Gear to power the screen. McWill is working on a Cartridge that is compatible with his own IPS Screens, though.

@@Spintechfilms I think in order to do the mcwill mod you have to rid of some of the gamegear pcb board parts one of which is probably what lets the tuner communicate with the gamegear
I know the Tuner isn't compatible with modern LCD mods, but once you convert it to Roku would it then be compatible?

This mod is really cool! I had a Sega Game Gear myself a while ago now. But, it broke due to a capacitor leaking into the screen. I didn't have the tv tuner for the Game gear or the battery pack. I only remember having the ac adapter because the machine would eat up 6 aa batteries in 6 hours. The only time I used the batteries if I would take vacations. Would I be able to do this mod with out the OEM Game Gear power back and using one of those later power pack adapter say from around 1995? You gotta do a tutorial on this mod.

Awesome project -- but a minor quibble: the TV tuner doesn't actually interface with the graphics-drawing circuitry of the game gear, and instead outputs directly to the screen. While the screen isn't particularly high-quality by our modern standards, you'd definitely tell from some of these examples if only 32 colors are on the screen.

I wish someone would make a gamegear extension port adapter for HDMI out so you can just connect the sunnavabitch to the TV cause the stock screen looks terrible and yea you can put a different screen in but it will still look crappy
I'm sure someone has already mentioned this, but the Game Gear's resolution is 160x144. The same as the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Anyhow, neat mod. I'm wondering if the tv tuner will work with the analogue pocket.
Why not change the screen too ? Never mind Roku, the screen must be the first aspect of the Game Gear that needs adapting. Then a rechargeable lithium Ion battery. Then one cartridge with all the gsmes.
Nice mod, you can actually replace the game gear screen with a better clearer one, but since the screen itself is very small resolution will still be low, l watched videos of component and vga mods for game gear but takes out the portability of the console
What’s the battery life
I have one of these that belonged to my daughter.
I would like to figure out a way to use it to watch remote video from my _KAP_ {Kite Aerial Photography} rig. UNFORTUNATELY most of the Game Gear {legacy} TV Tuners I have seen for sale are close to $100 or more. The point of using the Game Gear is because it's free.
I'm a purely "stock" man myself. I prefer things to be left in their original state most of the time. But, very clever idea though.

I also bet that you could also make a smart TV mod for the TurboExpress, Game Boy Advance, and Game Boy Advance SP. Also, besides the Roku Express, other small devices for streaming that you could use as a portable smart TV device for the three include the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Chromecast with Google TV, and streaming sticks that run on Android TV such as the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick and the TiVo Stream 4K.

Oh man I like seeing what that looks like on the old screen but it's screaming in the back of my mind "Mod the screen!". ^_^ I don't like much about the future Ie. Tablet World, but the LCDs and rechargeable batteries are a lot better now. ;)

Good stuff. Back in the 90's my mom punished me by taking my tv privileges away. I was into playing my Genesis at the time so that was a problem. Anyway, I had a game gear with the tv tuner and I was looking at the A/V port on the tv tuner. I managed to take a 75 to 300 Ohm UHF/VHF Matching Transformer as well as another adapter that had 2 screws and a 1/8th plug to plug into the a/v port. My Dad had alot of stuff like that hanging around. So I played my genesis on my game gear screen. It wasn't that great looking but it was alot smoother than the game gear sonic.
There is something I would like to see. Somebody making a Sega cartridge into a game gear cartridge adapter. Like how the super Nintendo had the super game boy cartridge. Ironically Sega never made one for the Sega game system. Although there is one out there I have not seen one ever.
The retron has an adaptor cartridge for the game gear and sms.
You gotta do the mcwell mod on this. You could side load an emulator. Would be crazy.
doesn't work with MC will modded screen, output of the tuner goes internally direct on the pins, its not looped within Mc will circuitry
