  • Undoubtedly one of the best themed attractions Disney has ever created, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was recently closed over in Disney's California Adventure. Even though the attraction only operated for 14 years it's still looked back fondly as one of Imagineering's greatest accomplishments.

    I mean for me, the ride was awesome because of its theme. The abandoned hotel, the stoic and emotionless employees, that awesome video you would watch in the tiny library room, how amazingly decorated everything was, the wave goodbye, and then the real fun began. It was a cool experience as a kid to be scared and thrilled at the same time.

    Fun fact for anybody who rides Mission Breakout: when you’re escorted into the Collector’s office, pay attention to everything kept within the shelves, as they are all mostly old decor and pieces from Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. You can see the Indian elephants, some of the old books (whose bindings feature the names of the imagineers who built the original ride), and a bellhop’s hat in the back shelf. On another note, Harold, the old snow monster animatronic from the Matterhorn, is kept in the queue where the boiler room was, though he’s a far easier trivia piece to spot. I highly encourage all of you to look through the ride and see how many pieces you can find, because there’s a lot more than you’d expect.

    One of my favorite childhood memories was driving to Disneyland, arriving at nighttime and passing the purple glow of the TOT while we made our way to our hotel. It was always so ominous and foreboding; that ride always gave me such adrenaline and the atmosphere was incredible. I don't think I'll ever get over it changing into GOG - even the building is ugly... Just super obnoxious and hulking. :-(

      Sophie Mia I remember as a child feeling/doing the exact same thing arriving to the park at night and seeing the purple lights. I remember even just staring up at the tower gave adrenaline and nostalgia -even my first time being there! Rip DCA tower of terror...I’ll never forget the way Disneylands California adventure made me feel, i May never feel that way again due to them changing all of the classic DCA rides but I’m glad it will forever be apart of my childhood Disneyland experience...gone but never forgotten❤️

    As much as I love Disney, this is one thing I can honestly say was a massive mistake. The Tower of Terror was a perfect edition to DCAs new " Old Hollywood" redesign. Playing on the image of CA when Walt Disney first came here. Hollywoodland, the red cars, etc. It was perfect. Evan Paradise Pier fit in perfectly to 1920s California. But now even thats going away, making way for the new Pixar Pier. In other words, I find it really odd that DCA is going through
    yet another redesign (pixar pier, etc) when they just revamped everything to look like CA in the 1920s-1930s.

    The tower of terror was one of my favorite rides there, it was heartbreaking literally for me when it closed, I love the twilight zone and the fact that it was a spookier theme was up my alley so I loved it automatically, the drops were fun it wasn't made to make me feel comfortable but uncomfortable the random times was the best thing ever so I could not predict it

      I thought they were turning the Hollywoodland portion of DCA into a Marvel Land. They have the GoG ride and Marvel superhero meet and greets in that area already. All they would have to do is retheme the gift shops, maybe add in another Marvel ride.

    • @brycebitetti1402
      @brycebitetti1402 7 років тому +2

      Natalie Moore Yeah, they're adding Avengers and Spider-Man attractions. Plus, the whole Pixar Pier thing means that the California theming will be virtually nonexistent.

    • @kendrick5501
      @kendrick5501 7 років тому +6

      Bryce Bitetti Well I will miss the California theme tbh
      But, what I don't like about this is how will the park's overall theme be based on. Seeing as it's only a mix of mostly Disney themed, Pixar themed, and Marvel themed attractions, I have no idea how the attractions would have in common. So it feels like it's now only Disneyland 2 and that it feels like an extension of Disneyland rather than a park that really stands out from Disneyland

    This video just made me sad.... Really sucks that such iconic ride theming was replaced with something like this. The Tower Of Terror's are my favorite Disney rides and seeing one go is just... Let's just pray that the other ones won't be rethemed (Paris & Orlando, and then ESPECIALLY Orlando)

    • @SaraHouck461

      YoungCoasterFan Don't worry. Florida's Tower of Terror will thankfully prevail. Speaking of which, I've read somewhere that a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction will replace Ellen's Energy Adventure at Epcot, which was an attraction that apparently not a lot of people cared for. I figured that might've been a response to the vitriolic backlash against a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction replacing the California Tower of Terror, so the backlash against a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction replacing Ellen's Energy Adventure would probably be more downplayed in this case.

    • @grantcooper5799
      @grantcooper5799 6 років тому +26

      Paris's Tower is exactly the same as the California one but with French narration. I'm glad they are replacing a weird ride no one knows about instead in Florida.

    • @brycebitetti1402
      @brycebitetti1402 6 років тому +43

      YoungCoasterFan I don't know, Guardians is kind of better in my opinion. Not better than the Florida version mind you, but I think the more fun type of vibe is, well, more fun. On a technical level the ride was improved with a more engaging queue, actual animatronics, randomized drop sequences, and a halloween overlay to top it off. You might prefer what's spooky (though the Halloween overlay of Guardians sort of checks that box), but in my opinion nothing beats a straight up good time.

      The Paris Tower unfortunately now in imminent danger as well to the same fate as the one in California. It does gets a little complicated in Orlando due to the design's differences.

    I really think they made a mistake with this one. I fear that Guardians of the Galaxy won't have the longevity that The Twilight Zone had since it's basically timeless. I have the creeping suspicion that this might be the beginning of the end when the licence has gone out of style, which it might already have...

      You got it. Haunted Mansion and Tower of Terror got it right in the first place...
      Both had a timeless quality that Guardians of the Galaxy theme lacks... Probably will have to retool it again in 15 years.

    • @YokiDokiPanic
      @YokiDokiPanic 6 років тому +27

      If it even lasts that long to begin with. And whenever Disney retools a ride it's usually for the worse. A few other notable examples are:
      Mission to mars -> Alien extraterrorestrial -> Stitch's great escape
      Submarine voyage-> Finding Nemo submarine voyage
      Maelstorm-> Frozen ever after
      (The only exception to this trend, as far as I know, is Superstar Limo. But that one was dead on arrival, so any change would have been better.)
      I only hope that they treat the ride with more care and respect if they do update it.

    • @borderlinblue
      @borderlinblue 6 років тому +9

      I'm sure the ride will be rehashed again. But apparently the marketing team at Disney thinks that this theme will rake in the money even though the first film that made it popular was only released in 2014. If the next sequel tanks what will happen then?

      As a long time Marvel fan (before disney got ahold of them) I have to affirm that no, I do not see the Guardians of the Galaxy having any hard hitting staying power. It upsets me that they lumped them in against Thanos in Marvel's greatest comicbook arc in history: The Infinity Guantlet.
      Guardians is trash TV.

    • @ShiningDialga
      @ShiningDialga 6 років тому +13

      Agreed. Guardians is the Forrest Gump of Marvel: it relies on being a giant nostalgia circle jerk instead of it's quality. A lot of people I know, me included, thought it was mediocre. Take away the 8 tracks and rock music, and you don't have much left...

    wonderful video. I was never a fan of Tower of Terror, but it had an awesome look, great theming, and it fit really well with the area. I loved the way the tower looked with the Red Car passing in front of it. Even when I was in the area it was great to listen to the 20's era music in the area. I prefer the Tower of Terror to Guardians. Worst of all, you have always been able to see the tower from all over the resort, but let me say it looked better before from Disneyland, than it does now from Disneyland.

      Yes! I completely agree. TOT did such a great job with blending into the other nearby hotels, but it stood out because of its creepy vibe. I even think it looks better than the one in Florida. It fit perfectly with the Hollywood theme and the park itself. I actually enjoyed TOT because it was so eerie. No other ride has ever made me feel like that. Now, having this weird metallic building in place of the original tower just makes you feel out of place. It looks terrible, in my opinion, and it kills the whole 'California' vision that the park was aiming for. It's sad to see it gone.

    It's hard to go to California Adventure anymore with the Tower of Terror gone. I personally prefer it over the Guardians of the Galaxy skin- I'm not a fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but the Twilight Zone is iconic and fits much better with the atheistic of California Adventure. I'm really sad to see the Tower go, and to add insult to injury Paradise Pier is going to get taken out as well and replaced. Screamin' California is probably my favorite roller-coaster and that's going to get canned which means I probably won't be going over to California adventure anymore- if I even visit Disney Land anymore.

    Another Disney classic ride rethemed that would make an interesting video would have to be Submarine Voyage given there are three versions of it. The original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the one just called Submarine Voyage, and the rethemed Finding Nemo version. It does cover two parks as well.

    I feel like the transition is really symbolic when you look at the tower's re theme in DCA and how we treat cinema today. We've chosen to leave the classics that paved the way to modern cinema in the dust for flashy and quick comedy. No more suspense and grit, but rather loud music and bright visuals. Now I love this new ride, I think it's a lot of fun, but as a film student I fear for the future of the entertainment industry if we chose to forget our roots.

When I came back home to California for a visit and went on the Tower in Disneyland Anaheim, it reminded me of how different it was and I got a whole new appreciation for both rides. Sadly, that was on the very last day the Anaheim tower was in operation. RIP.

    I think the new Guardians ride is incredibly technically impressive with the stunning Rocket animatronic and lighting effects. That said though...the exterior looks absolutely horrific and I personally think lacks any real thought in regards to the design. It just doesn't make any sense how there's all these little bits and bobs sticking out all over the place. And you can't tell me that's just themeing for the films, the movies actually had some well-placed designs. And I understand the atmosphere is SUPPOSED to be different, but I never felt like the Guardians story, atmosphere, ride in general had any lasting effect. It might just me being salty about them getting rid of my favorite ride ever, but I honestly just feel like it's a bit lazy...

      Their plans for Marvel Land cut into not only the Hollywood backlot area, but Bug's Land as well. So both Bug's Land and Tower of Terror were doomed. Tower was simply picked to be refurbished into Guardians as it would be much cheaper than a new attraction, and it could be done in time to coincide with the second movie. Tower of Terror was doomed no matter what, this was just the smarter business option.

    You're missing the key reason why the Tower of Terror was Switched to Guardians of the Galaxy. Simply, Disney does not own full rights to the Twilight Zone. Everytime someone went on the ride, Disney had to pay a royalty. With two locations, that became rather pricey. Not sure how you missed this key part.

    Loved this video and all the others as well. As someone who was an AP member for the last year of DCA's Tower and who logged around 40 days in-park in that year, I have to say that as sad as it is to see it go, the ride itself was not bringing in people the way it used to. It was often under 30-minute waits, always had Fast Passes available and generally didn't get a ton of traffic. We will see what the lines do long term, but since the retheme, the traffic through the ride and that area of the park have shot through the roof and we've been seeing wait times of 300 minutes, just like we did when Radiator Springs Racers opened up, which for a mere retheme and not a brand new ride, is pretty impressive. We didn't get that same reaction to the retheme of Soarin at all so clearly this has been a more popular move than it is getting credit for. While I do get the frustration of fans, the main issue is that the land the Tower sat in has been dying a slow death for some time and it was one of only two rides/attraction that was even open at all. The way Disney has appeared to have chosen to save that area is to turn it into a Marvel land, which would totally kill the theme of the Tower completely, so the retheming makes perfect sense and I think will be a great thing for DCA in the long run and bring new life to an area that has needed some desperate help for a long time.

    • @thisismysea
      @thisismysea 7 років тому +8

      Agree that DCA's Tower of Terror was losing popularity despite being awesome. The idea of this retheme is growing on me because I truly love DCA in general and hate it's reputation as one of the weakest Disney parks. However I didn't know they were planning to change the Hollywood backlot area into Marvel Land...somehow I thought the Marvel area would be an expansion. I LOVE the Hollywood area and would be truly sad to see it go rather than improved under its current theme. I hope Buena Vista Street sticks around at least! It would be so weird to enter DCA and immediately be in a sci-fi outer space area when the rest of the park is still themed around real settings in California. It would've made sense for the Marvel stuff to be entered through Hollywood though because it's movie magic.

    • @renanpereirasimoes

      Disney should have used randomized drops for DCA, or make special drop events, just like they do in TDS Tower of Terror.

    • @lynnb2562
      @lynnb2562 7 років тому +6

      +thisismysea I agree that DCA is one of the most underrated parks in the Disney Parks system and we really grew to love it as much as Disneyland itself over the last year. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the Hollywood backlot, but if they were to add a Marvel land, there really is no more room for expansion in DLR, no matter which park it is. Even Star Wars Land isn't an expansion. They had to tear down a huge chunk of Tom Sawyer's Island and some of the back storage area to make it.
      As far as I know, Buena Vista Street is not going to be touched nor is the Art of Animation area. There is too much there for kids and young families that is still really popular and has a huge amount of traffic. I know it is really popular for my husband and I. We just love the Beast's Library and Turtle Talk with Crush and more over there. Not to mention that Buena Vista street is the shopping area and Disney won't get rid of that. I have a feeling that the plan is more to take over that area by the Monster's Inc ride and some of the more defunct theaters (aka everything but the Hyperion), but it is still all at the rumor stage at this point. No real telling. I would like to see more rides over there and a bit of revitalisation for sure as that area that had the Mad T Party is just pointless right now, but I too hope it isn't a full land overhaul.

    • @lynnb2562
      @lynnb2562 7 років тому +3

      This one is a bit of a cluster; I am assuming you are talking about the rides in Magic Kingdom in Florida? It originally was the "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage" ride, which opened in 1971. This was very similar to the submarine voyage in Disneyland, albeit with the fantastic 20,000 Leagues themes. It was suddenly closed in 1994 due to controversial and debatable reasons, and just left there to rot for around 10 years. What a shame, I only got to ride this only once in the early 90s as a child.
      Around 2004, the ride was demolished to make way for "Poohs Playful Spot". In the more recent years, it was subsequently redeveloped for the "Seven Dwarves Mine Cart Train" ride that exists today, which probably coincides with the removal of "Snow White Scary Adventures" ride.

    I'm finally going to Disneyland after 30+ years in September 2000, but I waited to long. So many rides came and went I missed. Disneyland was my heart. And I blew it.

    I really like mission breakout!
    I think it makes the up-and-down mechanic more interesting, and from a business standpoint, it was a very smart decision 👍👍👍
    Also, the new Rocket animatronic in the pre-show room is sooo cute! Not Disney’s best or most fluid figure by any means, but I think he looks good nevertheless!

      Cuddle Bee yeah. They sold out to make a quick and easy buck. How long do you think Guardians will even be relevant? A lifetime? wrong

    • @stanfordite
      @stanfordite 5 років тому

      Oh no it wasn't a smart business decision. After I take over Disney, I'm breaking them up and that includes selling off Marvel and removing all traces of Marvel from the parks. I'm going to make DCA great again and put Tower of Terror back. I don't care if that causes attendance to drop like a rock and turns the park into a ghost town.

    Thank you so much for this video! My heart was broken when they announced the change. Best time to go on the ride was during the Disney land firework show. Not only was the line short, but you saw the fire works at the top story when the doors opened! Best memories and feelz of my life!

      Let's be real here: The Twilight Zone is one of those things that pretty much everyone knows about even if they don't know they know. Like...so much of it has been parodied and ripped off in various forms over the years in other pieces of media (the S2 theme music, "it's a cookbook", all the episodes featuring sentient toys, and the gremlin on the wing of the plane in particular) that it's virtually impossible for someone who consumes even a basic amount of media to *not* know about it even though they might not be aware of it.

    My family and I were lucky enough to go to the DCA ToT a couple of years before it’s transformation. It was a wonderful classic and timeless because of its theme. It was museum worthy and is a loss. The Paris version however is also very good. This year I’m headed to the Florida version so will collect the trilogy. Grateful that I had the chance!

    Talking to employees at the park, I've been told they had to pay royalties to use the Tower of Terror name, thus changing it for financial reasons.

    It's such a shame.... I mean, I love GotG.... but the Tower of Terror was such a great ride, so thematic and atmospheric.... Plus, it has some great memories for my family. XD There was the year I got tendonitis in both knees and had to be put in a wheelchair for the rest of the visit. The Tower cast were so great, very helpful. They got my chair secured, and still stayed in character. Another year, when my little sister was about seven years old, we were in the front row and she became part of the 'show'. As the "ghoulish" elevator attendant gave the safety instructions in character, he told everyone to keep a hold of their hats, glasses, valuables... and "loved ones", turning to give my sister, who was sitting next to our mom, a super creepy, mournful look. It was great, she got totally spooked and everyone laughed as she clutched our mom, like she was scared she'd vanish. I just can't imagine the Guardians ride giving that same feeling.
