Here's how to make a drill holder or a "quick release drill holster" for your french cleat wall. Looking for better tool storage? Are your tools hogging up valuable workbench real-estate? I just purchased some drills, and they needed a home. This holster is a simple design with the charger attached to the side. See below for all the tools and supplies used, a cut list, and step by step directions.

    (3) 10″ x 10″ piece of 3/4″ plywood
    (1) 10″ x 10 1/2″ piece of 1/2″ plywood
    (1) 10 1/2″ piece of 1×3 (for cleat)
SUPPLIES USED TO MAKE DRILL HOLSTER

    (4) 1 1/4″ Screws (to attach back)
    (4) 1 3/4″ Screws (to attach cleat)
TOOLS USED TO MAKE DRILL RACK
    Table Saw
    Power Drill
    Drill Bits
    Counter Sink Drill Bit
    (2) 12″ Clamps
    Jig Saw
STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS ON MAKING DRILL HOLDER
STEP 1: CUT THREE 10″ BY 10″ PIECES OF 3/4″ PLYWOOD
STEP 2 (OPTIONAL STEP): CUT RABBETS 3/4″ BY 1/2″.
If you're not comfortable making rabbets or just want to make this build easier do a butt joint by attaching the top piece to the top of the two side pieces.
STEP 3 (ANOTHER OPTIONAL STEP): CUT TRIANGLE PIECE OFF OF SIDES
Just for looks really. Although it does make it slightly easier to access the drills.
STEP 4: MEASURE FOR DRILL SLOTS
My slots were 5.5″ deep and 2″ wide
STEP 5: CUT OUT SLOTS FOR DRILLS
I drilled a hole to help with using the jig saw, but this cut is doable with just the jig saw.
    STEP 5: ATTACH BACK
Cut 10.5″ by 10″ piece of 1/2″ plywood and attach it to back. I used wood glue and then fastened with four 1 1/4″ wood screws after pre-drilling and counter sinking holes.
    STEP 6: ATTACH FRENCH CLEAT
Use 10″ long piece for cleat. My cleat wall is made with 3/4″ lumber. Don't forget to pre-drill and counter sink. I used wood glue and 1 3/4″ screws here so they would drill through to the side pieces for extra support.
    STEP 7: ATTACH BATTERY CHARGER
If your charger is like mine you can mount it to the side of your holder.
