Even as an American, I revere Roger Doucet and Dick Irvin. We often got to hear Dick’s crisp, knowledgeable voice down here in the States. And who can forget Doucet’s stirring renditions of both our national anthems. I rank Roger Doucet and Wayne Messmer of Chicago as the very best anthem singers in all sports, not just hockey.
@@OldRustySteele Speaking of Chicago, Jim Cornelison delivers as powerful a rendition of The Star Spangled Banner as anyone can. He literally brings the house down!
Love how the crowd hardly responses to Shutt and Gainey during introductions. A few seasons later they would be gods. Love it. Also Lafleur with a helmet. Sweet.
It feels like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls...footage from those days is quite hard to come by, especially outside of Canada. Thank you for sharing this!!!
Me too. I'm a tenor. I sing in a choir and as a soloist. While the players in uniforms are the heroes of hockey history, M. Doucet is one of my heroes of singing. He was also a Second World War veteran!
Danny Gallivan was such a great hockey expert on top of being the best play by play man in the business. He accurately predicted how good the Flyers would be that year and he was proven right like he most often was.
This was a busy day for sports on CBC television, with the first game of the World Series in Oakland between the A's and New York Mets in the afternoon, and the CFL game between the Edmonton Eskimos and B.C. Lions at Vancouver after the hockey game.
What a lineup. Little did the fans know: this guy, Guy? Ok, maybe if he ditches the helmet. Tall skinny guy on D, Robinson? Let’s wait and see. Schutt? No, doubt it. Lambert doesn’t look like he has any big moments ahead. We drafted this Gainey kid? Can’t see him being much. Result: the beginnings of the dynasty. What a time, and it only got better!
Dryden would take time too be a lawyer, a really new season with tons of rookies, Schutt ,Gainey, Salming, Turnbull, McDonald, Potvin , Lysiak and many more, and Tim Horton killed in car crash, and Flyers would be the first expansion team too win the Stanley cup, and who could forget Harold Ballard released from prison, this ladies and gentlemen was my first year paying attention to watching and following hockey and most memorable, I wish the leafs would show games from that year on leafs tv but they can’t even do that right.

A fierce competitor who always knew how to push the right buttons with the talent he had. A MASTER. The only other coach who came close to his expertise behind the bench and was his toughest opposing coach, Al Arbour. Whose Islanders' teams ironically had their own dynasty following the great Montreal teams from theb70's.
A lot of my hockey heroes ! Missing Beliveau Geffrion, Plante , Ferguson, Harvey, Worsley, Dryden etc. etc. LOVE MY HABS SINCE late 1950’s !!! Watch out this year, they are going to surprise ALL the so called “ experts” 😊

It's kinda funny. Chuck Lefley gets a bigger cheer from the crowd than Lafleur, Gainey, Shutt, Robinson, Lambert. That wouldn't last much longer though! :) And great to hear Roger Doucet belt out the anthem. I was 10 years old during this season and what a wild ride the 70's would turn out to be for our team. This was the yr, that Dryden took a sabbatical to complete law school ( over a contract dispute) the Habs also lost Houle and Tardiff, to the WHA, opened the door for Lambert, Gainey and Shutt.
@1:10 - Big Bob Dailey! He and Pete Mahovlich would've stuck out like sore thumbs on the ice in this game. They certainly did when the two teams met in the '75 quarter finals. They wouldn't in today's NHL.
He played 60 games that year, but this wasn't one of them. You can see Claude Larose's #15 jersey hanging in the dressing room, and he didn't dress that night, either.
Dryden is conspicuously absent. If he and Pollock come to terms before the season starts, do the Habs win the Cup instead of getting eliminated in the first round in the playoffs? Thanks for posting.
He announced on September 14, 1973, that he was joining the Toronto law firm of Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt as a legal clerk for the year, for $135 a week. He skipped training camp and held out that season.
