Extra Fine Nib compairison

  • Intro: Personally, when I’m taking notes during class or while at work I prefer a fine line so that way I can fit as much onto a page or write small if needed. I initially only owned a Lamy EF steel nib and I was curious about how the other main Extra Fine Nibs measured up. So, I purchased a Faber-Castell LOOM and a TWSBI 580 Diamond (with my own money) and I sought out to find which one performed closes to my preference.
Testing Criteria: I would test each nib with with two criteria, line thickness and nib smoothness. I chose only these two because I felt like these were the most important because typically the finer a nib gets the more likely it will be to have feedback. So if a nib was finer but smoother that would make it a clear winner.
Line thickness: I tested line thickness by drawing lines on a page with pre-set lines with thicknesses on it. The lines are both vertical and horizontal. I would draw some lines and compare to see which most closely resembled the line that I drew.
Result (winner is thinnest): 1st: TWSBI 580
    2nd: Faber-Castell LOOM
    3rd: Lamy Steel (Aion)
Smoothness: It was hard for me to quantify smoothness because I didn’t want someone to watch the video just have me verbally say “oh yeah that feels smoother” because feeling can be manipulated if you like a pen or if it is more comfortable. So I figured out if I put a weight at the end of a paper and write lines a smoother nib would be able to write further from the weight without moving the paper.
Result (winner is smoothest): 1st: Lamy Steel (Aion)
    2nd: Faber-Castell LOOM
    3rd: TWSBI 580
Conclusion: Each of the Extra fine nibs performed with their own unique characteristics. The Lamy is the “fattest writer” but is the smoothest, and the TWSBI 580 is the “finest” but has the most feedback, and the Faber-Castell LOOM is in-between. With this I would say the Faber-castell is the “winner” because it has a good balance between feedback and line thickness.

this comparison is WAAAAYYY better than almost every big name pen reviewers. It's just a shame you don't have more japanese fine nibs you could add to the comparison.

Best representation of smoothness i've seen on any review. Although i will say the Lamy made the paper move at the same area as the FC..

This is exactly the kind of review I am looking for. Thinness and smoothness! Thank you for this review:)

I'm reminded of the adage, "your mileage may vary". I tend to write small so I have more than a few EF nibs. My hand agrees with yours -- Faber Castell all the way! My TWSBI (580 ALR) writes broad enough that more than once I've double checked, thinking it was "fine" and Lamy steel is just...variable.

Regarding feedback, I always polish the nibs with some micro mesh. A small sanding disc of 12000 grit costs like $3.5 anyway.

Seems like there's an inverse correlation between fine-ness and smoothness.

I find the Lamy Aion is the best experience out of the three. Cool review! 👍

Interesting comparison, I actually have an Aion in the mail to me and I debated on getting the fine or extra fine and ended up going fine. This is making me wish I went with the extra fine!

Just saw this video and thought it was great. Thanks for posting it. Was wondering, though, if that Pen Tuner chart is available anywhere? The site appears to be down at the moment.

Very interesting way to test smoothness :)
I was wondering if i should get my sister a fine lamy or EF lamy... This helped, im sure now that she needs the EF as she writes smaller then ants.
It confirms what i thought... The lamy EF is smoother but not as fine as some others. Which means i wont bump it to a fine for smoothness. (For my sister at least..)
    Thanks :)

Good idea for comparisons but you should repeat the test multiple times for each pen to get more accurate results

In my book, the Lamy won due to not catching on the paper the way the other two did.

How about the wetness? I know it's extra-fine but it must be cool if it gives fine line with good amount of wetness. Thanks Rusty

    • @RustyDarkMatter
      @RustyDarkMatter  6 років тому +1

I'm not sure how to quantify wetness but the lamy is the wettest which also contributes to it's line being the thickest. The only other difference is the TWSBI's nib is softer so a little pressure can made a wider line and also put out extra ink, while the FC is stiff and consistent.

Great comparison. Thanks. I use a Lamy CP1 with an EF nib as my daily driver. But it writes a bit broader for my liking. I would like to get a good demonstrator pen which writes sharper and also I would prefer the pen to be smaller and pocketable. Any suggestions?

    • @RustyDarkMatter
      @RustyDarkMatter  6 років тому +1

TWSBI makes the 580 mini. but again their EF nib will be scratchier but will write a little finer. as long as you are willing to give up some smoothness to get the finer line then that is what i would recommend. To be completely honest i am not a fan of most pocket fountain pens because all the sacrifices make it feel like jamming a square peg into a round hole.

I wish they would make these things to look classier than thick lumps of plastic. I am trying to find a nice, slimmer, metal bodied pen for under £50 in the Uk, with an extra fine point and coming up dry...

For inexpensive options: try the Platinum Preppy or Pilot Kakuno in extra fine nib size, or any other extra fine Japanese pen. Japanese sizes are usually smaller than European/Chinese sizes by an entire size (medium is a fine, fine is an extra fine). Pilot is a really good brand for consistent, smooth pens, followed by Platinum and Sailor.

Btw, the brands he tested out in the video are European/Chinese sizes

Very interesting although I'm not into fine nibs at all.
I have an Aion and a Loom as well and the Aion is my go-to-pen. If the Loom was made in Germany (where I live) instead of China, they would be on par.
Unfortunately, the first Loom I bought was too dry for my liking, but I liked the body itself so much, that I ended up buying a Faber Castell Basic and putting that feed and nib into the Loom.

It’s hard to remain unbiased if a pen was given to you by a company to review. So he was showing that he was free of any feelings of obligation, and that we would be getting an objective result, by stating that he had bought them himself.
