    No, you need to use Japanese rice. Sometimes it's sold as sushi rice. Regular rice (long grain, Thai jasmine, instant, etc.) aren't sticky enough and your onigiri won't hold together.

    The first time I tried rice and seaweed, I was in the second grade and this little Korean girl had it for lunch. I don't remember exactly, but some how we began to talk about what she was eating. She was sip sweet, she offered some to me. Unlike children that age, I was pretty open minded about foods, and I tried some. It was the best thing i had ever eaten lol. I love Asian dishes now. I'll always remember that.....

      @@kue4118 One of my grandfathers turned his whole family to Braunschweiger after his occupation of Germany right after ww2. On top of a great potato salad recipe from a family he became friends with. I told some classmates what my smoked liver sausage paste sandwich was and of course the reaction was horrifying to them! I haven't had it in years. Your gimbap from that day sounds delicious!

    Thank you for the tutorial. I made some last night for my daughter and myself for a late night snack. My filling was fried tofu with a sesame seed coating. After making the onigiri, I rolled them in some extra sesame seeds and sprinkled them with soy sauce. My daughter was so impressed that she asked for seconds! This late night snack prevented her from going to the convenience store and buying junk food! Thanks again!

    I made and tried Onigiri today! I put leftover salmon from last night's dinner and a bit of the homemade tartar sauce I made to go with it inside and it was delicious. I am finding that maybe Nori and I don't get along - I'm still not sure I like it and used it sparingly, but I loved everything else. Thanks for the tutorial!

    Made 2 onigiri for my son's lunch to put in his brand new bento box. Went for tuna/celeri/carrot/mayo/sesame seeds. It was a lot easier to form then I was expecting! Took about a minute per onigiri only. I made one for myself and omg it is very filling and delicious, I love the crispy nori! My son never was a fan of sandwiches so this will replace them nicely. Thank you for teaching us how to make them!

    Hey Emmy - I had onigiri today and it made me think to swing by this video and leave a comment. I saw this not long after it came out, so sometime in 2011, and decided to try it. I made tuna, just like this, and was astonished at how delicious I found the combination. I've been making it ever since then and it's all due to watching you. Thank you!

    Omg, when I made this I used the WHOLE BAG of sushi rice, because it didn't look like that much. I had no idea it would soak up so much water and puff up! I ended up making, like, 40 rice balls when my intention was to make, like, ten. I also LOVE watching your videos! I just ordered a bunch of Japanese candy online, because you make it seem so much fun! I can't wait to try the Dodotto Candy!!!!!

    I made onigiri for the first time a couple days ago with this video being one of my guides. I wasn't expecting the tuna, mayo and rice to be so delicious together but I think it tasted better than a regular sandwich! And I found it more filling in comparison.
    This video was great. Thank you for putting it up! :)

    XD you sold me at "like a sandwich..." Just throwing it out there, I mean the shape you have there the traditional triangle/teardrop is equal parts insightful as it is ingenious. I mean think about the physics of it, if you made a ball you'd just smear your lunch on your face but the trangle provides exceptional balance (2/3 surface area for holding to 1/3 for eating) but also gives you a starting point to your lunch, after the first bite I suspect things solve themselves.

    • @jamesopilas9664

      I never thought onigiri and physics would have to mesh together honestly.

    I grew up on this with the pickled plum inside yummy!! They make onigiri molds , you just put the rice in, plum or seaweed inside and close mold, it makes it perfect shape. My mom made these every road trip growing up , she put nori outside to wrap or sesame seeds . ❤️❤️❤️

  • @Drunkenvirtue

  • @emmymade

    @deliciouscrusties - Thanks for asking, since I forgot to mention it in the video. I used everyday Japanese rice which is shorter-grained & therefore slightly sticky and holds the onigiri's shape. Abroad I believe it's sold as sushi rice; just be careful not to add too much water. Good luck!

    Vinegar is used to favor rice for sushi. Onigiri on the other hand is usually seasoned with just a little salt. :)

    Obentos (boxed lunches) are common in Japan. In my opinion, they're easier to make in Japan since you can buy many of the side dishes already prepared. Outside of Japan (or a local Japanese market) making traditional bentos can be a lot of work, so I stick (lol) with simple onigiri.

  • @KindredWoD
    @KindredWoD 8 років тому +1

    I had no idea this was so simple! Thank you so much! I did bento for several months before my cheap rice cooker died and I didn't have the money for a better one. I wanted to keep doing it because it's healthier than quite a few other lunch options, but time restraints just made it a no-go. But with this idea, I might be able to do something similar. And I still have my old bento box so I can pack it in there!

  • @TheBlackStar999
    @TheBlackStar999 11 років тому

    I've heard that traditional Japanese housewives would make Onigiri with the rice piping hot, so it sticks together easier. Keep cool water in a bowl next to you while making it. Dip your hands in bowl when it is too hot and the rice starts sticking to your hands.

    I've never had a sweet onigiri, but feel free to add whatever you like. About the rice, there shouldn't be any water to squeeze in your rice. Your hands should be moist so the rice won't stick but your rice should be relatively dry.

    Hey Emmy! I made some of these last night, as I was inspired by your video. I did tuna mayo as well, and it turned out amaaaazing. I used some Furikake (regular soy sauce and nori flavour)on the outside of the onigiri and kind of rolled it around the curved side (so the flat part was plain) and it turned out absolutely delicious. Definitely gonna make them a lot from here on out!

    I just made onigiris!! Thanks for your tips! I also love the tuna mayo onigiri. Fun fact: I named my kitty Onigiri because she has a white triangle on her tummy (plus I get to call her Oni for short, which is supposed to mean "little demon.")
    I see some comments asking where to get nori, the first answer would be if you have a local Asian food mart. I live in Illinois, and my local Garden Fresh also has nori. Otherwise you can buy it online (it's shelf stable).

    Ever since I saw this 6 months ago, after my favourite sushi place closed, Friday night is Ongiri night in this house. I've done spicy tuna, spicy salmon, Kombu, Tempura shrimp, Tako. Home made Furikake on the outside, topped with a little bit of tobiko (Wasabi tobiko or black tobiko is my favourite). Thank you Emmy!!! I couldn't live without Onigiri. Leftovers make a great snack too! 🍙

    I've tried making onigiri before and I made a huge MESS in my kitchen! It turned out delicious and really in-shape, but it was rather a bit messy for me, hehe. Also, one of my tricks when I shape the onigiri is that instead of using my bare hands, I use a plastic cling wrap to shape it and avoid using water to wet my hands; I sprinkle the wrap with water beforehand so that it won't stick to the hot rice. My friends were pretty amazed with my cooking; it was a huge success~ :D

    I will have to try the tuna and mayo Onigiri, thanks for sharing. I very much enjoy the Onigiri with the red pickled plums as well.

    Next time try using sushi rice :) regular rice isn't sticky enough to hold the onigiri together.

    I tried it and it's delicious!! I put wasabi on the tuna filling so it gives a little more flavor. But it's great both ways. Try using salty water on soaking your hands :D

    A nice little video, thank you :)
    I love onigiri. I love simple food that yet tastes so good.
    To be honest, the perfect triangle shape is still something I have to practice.
    I like my onigiris with seaweed around with furikake.
    Are there non-fish/non-meat fillings you would recommend?

    @goldenrosekathlene - Thanks. I'm pretty sure it's a mic/setting issue. I don't think the volume of my voice has changed :)
