I just learned of the program and wondered if anyone had done a video about it - and here you are! Good work, thank you for answering many questions I had. Did you talk about inspections of work done? On second thought I guess you haven't had any yet when this video was made. I wouldn't want to give any government agency unfettered access to my property, so that might be a sticking point for me. The property taxes on forested non-lakefront land where you are are quite reasonable, so I'd have to weigh the tax savings against the government oversight on my own land. Glad it works for you though.
great program jen i am sure you will do a excellent job of maintaining and improving your land you have all ready done a lot to it, and if it saves you some money while doing it so much the better, wish you well with this project, have a nice week:):)
Great video! I looked into the MFTIP a few years ago and found the cost of getting a forester to do the upfront work too expensive for me. I believe it was at least $500. The government should pay for this to be done as a green initiative. They talk lots about reducing global warming but do little accept tax us. This would be a great step. I believe you said the taxes are reduced to 25%. I pay $3,000 tax and have 30+ acres with a house on it. Would that mean my taxes would be reduced to $750 or $2,250. Once again great video, thumbs up and a new subscriber here!
They exclude an acre around a house. The cost upfront is high but the money you save in taxes pays for the forester in a couple of years so its worth it. Yes , there is a range for tax reductions.
This look like a good program for you Jen. You seem to have all the good species too love it. Congrats on your approval. I'm in the same boat as Steve, will be tough to do some trail have about +- 30acres of good black loam and real deep. For us way up North tax are cheap +-$500 for all on, a 75 acres property. But I can see this program to be beneficiary for some with higher taxes.
Thanks Victor! I want to keep the forest healthy so that it benefits everyone. Our forest areas are diminishing so the goal in Ontario is to reforest and to take care of the ones we have. Where I grew up in Southern Ontario there was a lot of farming and only 20% tree coverage. Now, the push is on to reforest unused agricultural land. There is a government program as well to subsidize costs of reforesting land. It is called the 50 million tree program: www.forestsontario.ca/planting/programs/50-million-tree-program/
Pretty cool stuff, and great timing too. I was just looking into this program a few weeks ago because I am planning on buying land in the near future. The only problem for me is the amount of land you need to have to qualify. I may not be able to afford 10 acres, but only time will tell. If I do end up with enough, I will definitely be applying for this as well. Thank you for sharing, I'm looking forward to future updates on this :)
Some areas that have more bush on them tend to be less expensive. At least around here they are. If the land has farming potential then the prices skyrocket I find. Let me know if you have any questions if you get some land.
Real interesting subject for me. My 100 acre property costs me $1100 a year in taxes so over ten that's about $8000 saving. The cost of getting a forester couldn't be that much. As for making trails , boy that would be a rough job hahaha . I will look into it . Jen I never knew you could make Martin nesting boxes. Going to google how and make some this winter. Thanks for the vid.
The program benefits will pay for the forester in a few years. You can do your own forest management plan but a licensed forester has to sign off on it. I'm not that experienced so I hired someone. I will be doing a video soon(ish) on how to make the nest boxes. Stay tuned!
i had looked into this about 7 or 8 years ago when i had some small scale logging done. He was pushing for me to do it. Lots of great things about the program but decided to pass for a few years as i have more things i want to do without any hassle. The loggers that are certified to do it really know a lot about the bush. They aren't just running around clear cutting and making fields of forest!! Great topic Jen as i'm sure most have no idea about this program.
I think you should do it Adam at some point in the future. Really, if you are already doing the stuff, all you have to do is write it down and submit that at the 5yr and 10yr mark. I learned a lot about forestry from the gentleman that came out to help us with the plan.
Thanks Michael! You hit the nail on the head, forests are important for all of us and provide many benefits including the oxygen we breathe. Have a great week.
What a great and informative video! this topic is right up my alley! I'm glad you mentioned the importance of dead standing and dead fall. a lot of people clean up the forest floor thinking it's helping but it destroys micro habitats. thanks for sharing this. very inspiring!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I agree it is very important to leave some of the dead fall and standing dead for use by the critters of the woods!
like your vids...this one sounds very interesting...I. CAN BEARLY HEAR AUDIO. Please check before releasing so everyone can fully enjoy the information and return for the next one...thanks
We have 5 acres of swamp we keep for native fauna & flora we don't use. I've done some astacology research on procambarus (ortmannicus) plumimanus common name "Croatan Crayfish" out there for 30 yrs. They live under ground in around rotten trees and stumps.
Wow. Very interesting. We have the Rusty Crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) that is an invasive species. I'm so glad that you are keeping that area of swamp for the Croatian Crayfish. How cool!
This was very interesting and informative Jen. Out of curiosity how big is your property...it appears to be mixed pasture and forest. Do you have any recommendations on how to find a good forester?
We have 170 acres. Mostly bush. Only about 10 acres of old pasture that we are reforesting. In Ontario for a forester check www.ofpa.ca under "find a forester".
I would guess it gives you a huge Tax break. Yes I see you did get one. 170 acres? Wow that's huge! I envy you their because I want land like that so bad but it cost so much here. Seems like a lot of work but I guess if they save you $$ you can do it right?
I was doing many of the activities before I knew about the program so it is easy for me to continue to do it and get some monetary benefit. Land is getting more and more expensive. We had to go way out of the city limits to get land at a reasonable price. Bush lots tend to be less expensive than land with farming potential.
This is very helpful, as I'm considering the same program. Thanks for sharing.
We are in this kind of program here in Wisconsin!
Awesome!

You're welcome Kirk!

Thanks Edward! Our forest health helps everyone so I'm glad to continue to take care of it.
congrats,you have a great forest there.interesting stuff
I think I'll have lots of fun working on the projects for this program!

very cool seems like you have a lot of good plans and i wish you the best with your goals
Thank you! I will give you guys updates on how things are going as I complete various tasks.

Thanks Del!

TWY, thanks for keeping the forest green and growing. I appreciate the oxygen and your passion.

It is very neat. I was pleased to hear about it and to take part in the program.

Thank you. The audio is coming through fine on my end. I do check all my vids. In 2017, a lot of my vids use a lapel mic.
A very cool project. you were talking about a tax break. How does that get implemented?
Once you are accepted into the program, the OMNRF notifies MPAC and then the township taxes the land accordingly.
Thanks for letting us know about this.
'mornin, Jen; Gonna be a busy lil-beaver 4 sure. Thanks 4 sharing ATB Terry God Bless
+T.W. Milburn (skillet210) Always busy for sure. Lots of fun though. Have a great weekend!

Thank you. Hopeing to buy some land and would like to improve it and keep a nice wildlife habitat so thats very helpful. Nice size property you got👍👍
Hi W/Y
We just bought property in Ontario
How did you go about finding a forestry person to hire to walk and help you with the program?
thanks for posting, how much does a forestry approx cost? (plan / approver of process)
About $1000 CDN. But it pays for itself in the tax savings and knowledge you get from the forester.
