I first discovered Bruckner when I was 19 years old in 1980 while I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison music school. I was the auxiliary double bassist for the Symphonic Band. Yes, Band!! Wind Ensembles and Bands have double bass parts written in. It was the first movement of Bruckner's 4th and obviously it was a transcription for Band. After the first rehearsal, I promptly went to the record store and bought a Bruckner complete symphonies set by Chicago/Barenboim. I immediately became a Brucknerite. I've always come back to Sym. 0 and have always loved it. It was composed between his first and second symphony, yet he threw it away as a failed attempt. Over the past 37 years since I first heard it, I have found it to be quite unfortunate that it has had that moniker.
I was 20 years old in 1958 when I discovered his 9 th symphonie, and how older I became how more I loved all his symphonies, his masses and the marvelous string quintet.
I've been watching all of your videos with the autograph scores. here's what I've noticed: Bruckner is a very economical orchestrator. Even in the much higher number symphonies, the same economy is evident. It's beautiful to study these originals because a modern score is printed with all parts, but the originals show the thought process. The missing doubled parts, the repeat signs (%), the cross-outs... it's all there. One can also learn orchestration and progress with Bruckner from symphonies 0 to 9. He's an orchestration course unto himself!
Affascinanti i tempi estremi.
I've been curious about this piece for a long time but have not got round to listening to it until now, and I loved it! I can't think why Bruckner was so insecure about it.
Anton Bruckner:d-moll Szimfónia ,,Nulladik” WAB 100 1.Moderato 00:05 2.Andante 14:41 3.Scherzo:Presto - Trió. Più lento e più tranquillo 27:50 4.Finálé:Moderato 34:28 Amszterdami Királyi Concertgebouw Zenekar Vezényel:Bernard Haitink
Harry Andruschak I'd pretty much dismissed #0. But you're right. This is the fourth time I've listened to it, I think. First time I've listened to it ! So beautiful. And all those building blocks are there. Bruckner can blow you away. And I love that. But now what I love most are those introspective, or deeply contemplative, and/or prayerful passages. Vastly overlooked.
The Allegro is just lovely, before the hammer comes down. No longer uninterested in #0. Enjoying the sheer beauty without anticipating the expected from the later works.
This has recently become one of my favourite Bruckner symphonies to listen to. The fist movement is particularly beautiful. Just imagine if Bruckner had decided to polish this gem at the height of his powers! Also this is a very good interpretation, who is it?
This is beautiful. Not really listened to any Bruckner before but I shall have to remedy that. And fabulous idea to put the score up on here....love being able to follow. Thank you.
This should be included in the set. Bruckner actually completed 10 symphonies with an unfinished 11th, if you look at it chronologically. Therefore glibly avoided the dreaded “9th symphony curse”
If you experience this, so called "Zero" Symphony, you may notice that while the first 2 movements may have religious underpinnings, the last 2 are a veritable orgasm! Behold the way that the scherzo jumps around. And the finale, with its orgiastic outbursts and snappy, sudden D major ending! This bespeaks a truly excited kid! You can have the somber seriousness and attempt to answer impossible existence questions as expressed in his last 3, but, at the age of 77, I'll take the youthful thrill of this one!
Who needs a theme? The music just seems to flow and the listener is swept along with it. Pity the young Anton listened to that moronic conductor . Im sure with the right encouragement he would have revised it and it would have become a standard repertoire piece. It's a wonderful work.
They had no trouble in renumbering Dvorak's symphonies. Bruckner composed 11. Just number the F minor # 1, this one # 2 and add 2 to the 9 numbered ones. It's that simple and only fair. Just because Bruckner, a fanatically religious peasant and a frustrated bachelor, wished to repudiate the sexually suggestive aura of his early symphonies doesn't negate 2 of his most thrilling expressions and deny them a number.
I really like this piece as I do with all of Bruckner’s symphonies, but there is something slightly unfinished sounding about it compared to his others. A basic simplicity of texture, almost minimalist. In a way it has very modern resonances in that regard.
Upon further rehearing, and patiently actually listening, there's too much beauty to dismiss it as an attempt. Certainly not a polished, finished Symphony, But much more than an attempt.
Give it a few more listens and you will find out what a great symphony this is. Bruckner tells his own story, just like in his other symphonies. To me that's all that matters.
Some of his later "official" symphonies are not without problems - No.3 (many revisions), No.4 (more revisions than any of them). Just sit back and enjoy the shear beauty of the music. By the way, there is a particular fine passage in the middle of the first movement of No.0 - full of nature... This Symphony is more than just an attempt - the F minor (Study), perhaps, but not this one.
This sounds like "Generic Symphony No. X by Long Dead Guy". :/ It's very milquetoast. Nothing wrong with it structurally. Extended sonata form. ABA. Kinda fast opening. Slow pretty 2nd movement, etc. But....eh.
A magnificent piece. I wish I could tell him in person. Pity he was so swayed by his critics.
Very much an underrated symphony...
Too many inappropriate comments. This is Great Music, splendidly performed. Full stop. Thank you so much for sharing.

Frans Meersman im lucky to have listened to most of his works at the ripe age of 17, from his symphonies, to aequales and to vocal music
The RCO!! YES!
The ideal combination : Anton Bruckner, Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Thanks!

The Trio is complex and innovative. Quite beautiful in the refrains. Endearingly original.

Because he was insecure about pretty much everything he wrote.
Raphael
Sounds like Mahler with his Song Of The Earth, also not called a symphony though it could be - not subpar to his "official" ones at all.

The Andante is particularly lovely. It would be unfair to dismiss it just because his later symphonies are masterpieces.
this was once Sym.2!
This has recently become one of my favourite Bruckner symphonies to listen to. The fist movement is particularly beautiful. Just imagine if Bruckner had decided to polish this gem at the height of his powers! Also this is a very good interpretation, who is it?
If you click on the tab "show more" you will see the info. It is Haitink with the Concertgebouw Orchestra
From 39:10 till 39:40 is just heaven. One of the most beautiful moments in music history.
LOL
@Shao Yu Mai Wang Ha, ha. I just realized that mistake. Sorry.
@Shao Yu Mai Wang I just corrected it. Thanks J
Actually i feel pretty much the same. Surprising, refreshing and naive... Beautiful

Best intro bruckner ever wrote
Townsend Moore that is true... sublime
Bruckner does show he has the chops to be a Symphonist in # 0.
Now Thelemann as recorded them. available on video but only for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. 3SAT

Wow!!
Andante sublime. Sleepy, but sublime.
Inbal recorded both 00, and 0 on Teldec many years ago.

Yes, Yes... Yes.
Love, Laughter, Love
I feel like I'm listening to Beethoven in a modern way ❤
Good piece. Now, where's the theme?
Strong scherzo. The finale will suffer with comparison to his later work.
A lovely symphony. It would be much better known and very popular if it wasn't given a silly title (no. 0).
The "silly" title was given by Bruckner himself as he didn't think much of it.
bruckner writes them the way bruckner wants to write.
Warum fehlt die genaue Quellenangabe?
DIESE PARTITUR AUTOGRAPH DES BRUCKNER ??
Had the Scherzo down early, however.
I really like this piece as I do with all of Bruckner’s symphonies, but there is something slightly unfinished sounding about it compared to his others. A basic simplicity of texture, almost minimalist. In a way it has very modern resonances in that regard.
I always thought there are traits of minimalism in Bruckner, especially his early works...
But where is the theme?! :D
Just listen again. Where is the theme in Beethoven 5 (1st movt.)?
Maestro:D
Love, Laughter, Love
listen to bruckners symphony -7 to understand this piece
I will and Thank You.
Love, Laughter, Love
35:30 Mozart symphony 40!
Even die-hard Brucknerites (like me) have to agree with the master: "an attempt".

Yes......BRAVO from Mexico!
