    Thanks Laura! My husband and I teach Lindy Hop and Balboa and I keep coming back to your video's because you're so great at finding words to explain things. I always try to give credit as in "Laura Glaess says -"
    (@ Lindy hop students: it's not namedropping, it's giving credit! ...Except when it's namedropping😆)
    I have found that the best dancers are not necessarily the best teachers and vice versa. As an instructor or a student you're constantly translating. When copying what you see isn't working, a teacher is translating movement and sensations to words, and then the student has to translate the words back into movement and/or sensations.
    And like in any translation a lot gets lost! So it's great to have found you online so I can sneak a peek at your videos before a class, just to see how you have chosen to put words around the material. Because often when I say the same stuff a second(or third) time but with different words, or approach it from a different angle, I can see by the faces in class that penny has dropped and it immediately shows in how the students dance.
    So thank you Laura! Also from our students!

      I love hearing how other instructors teach. Because a lot of dance teachers don't have dance teacher training, you know? They just have dance training. A lot of on the job learning.

    I taught this last night at my class, it's handy to watch this as I was trying to articulate to the class around the weight on the ball of the foot and heel on opposing feet, I got many blank stares! lol So I'll be directing them all to this video to watch!

    Hi Laura, I am in 10 days of quarantine and am so glad I found you! love your videos. So good and thanks for sharing your talent! I have two questions. Is it possible that you show the step once slowly at the beginning of your videos? Sometimes I miss something. If you do it at least once, I can watch it over and over again until I get it right! And if you could continue saying each step you do?! Lots of teachers often count, but dont'say what they are doing. I find both equally helpful...dancing is not my natural talent, but the love for swing music and moving around is :)

      @LauraGlaess  3 роки тому +1

      Great suggestions. I'll definitely start doing that. I'm always reluctant to say if something is or isn't someone's "natural" talent, but some people were lucky enough to run into dancing early on. Regardless of when people run into it, I think working on dance will even it the difference. I'm happy you're working!
      Good luck in quarantine! We're so close!

    Hi. I'd really like to learn to do this! I've been trying for months! It's in so many zoom classes i've been taking. I'm a slow learner and probably kinda dyslexic. I've tried slowing down videos to .25 speed and still can't get it! I cross my legs, spin, then end up with my legs crossed again! I mean, crossed legs after spinning are still crossed! i just can't do what you are doing! what am i doing wrong! i thought your tip about close feet wd help me but they stay crossed! :)

    • @LauraGlaess
      @LauraGlaess  4 роки тому

      Oh man, I sympathize with that frustration. Some of it is just having faith in yourself and continuing to practice.
      Let me ask - when you lock, your feet are close together. Are you also spinning with your axis between your feet? Or are you spinning on one foot or the other. If you spin on one foot, but keep the other foot on the floor, your feet will end crossed. If you spin between your feet, so your on one toe and one heel (ish) then it's easier to end with your feet straight.
      Hope that helps!

      @@LauraGlaess i'll try! i'm sure i'm spinning on one foot. i'm a slow learner. but very stubborn! : )

    Hey Laura, just love this move but I don't understand where it would fit in my dancing. Is it a 6 or 8 count and where would you use it? Swing outs? passby?

    • @LauraGlaess
      @LauraGlaess  4 роки тому +2

      These are great questions! Let's talk!
      The version that I'm doing in this video is 8 counts, but that can change a lot. A lock turn is really just the part where your legs cross into a turn, and you can do that in any number of different ways, which means it can take any number of different counts.
      Traditionally, it's a move for solo dancing, so you wouldn't do it with a partner. However, one of the wonderful things about solo dancing is how you can bring different components into your partner dance. You might not be able to do all 8 counts from this video, but you'll be able to do something.
      I wouldn't put a lock turn into a linear move, however, I do lock turns when my lead is already turning me. So, for example, if my lead gives me a tuck turn, I might do a rock step triple step (counts 1-4) like normal, and then lock turn with my L let on counts 5, 6. Does that make sense? Thanks for some great questions. Let me know if you have any more!
