I can't remember the last time I had a Pinot Grigio. I don't think I've ever had one that wowed me enough to go search for more.
I really like your new face-off format. It's interesting to hear how you perceive the differences. And you always have interesting and unique wines featured. Thanks.

Funny thing is that I LOVE high quality examples. Thanks for the feedback, I hope the series gets so popular so I can start featuring some real oddball wines.

These days I tend to stick with Alsace Pinot Gris, although some Aussies can be pretty good. I have had too many disappointing Italian PGs to spend much money on them.

HahHahha that might be a decent strategy… I stick to a few tried and true producers in Italy and it works out nice

Alto Adige or Friuli Venezia Giulia are definitely my go to areas for Pinot Grigio from Italy. PG from Venteo is generally pretty bland and generic, as far as a white wine is concerned. A great under the radar region is Baden, where the 3 Pinots are grown almost everywhere, and they take their Grauburgunder pretty seriously.
I think the apogee would be a VDP GG Grauburgunder from the Kaiserstuhl, where the soil is either schist or volcanic. For everyday drinking a VDP Ortswein Grauburgunder trocken is lovely and refreshing & a world away from insipid mass production PG.
Konstantin is probably the expert on these matters, I just thought people should know that there is more to German white wines than just Riesling. The Rheingau and Rheinhessen are also making pretty good Grauburgunder as well. I don't particularly like Alsatian PG as there is too much RS, imho, but maybe with spicy Southeast Asian cuisine it could work. Great video and keep them coming.

Thanks for the hot tips and suggestions. I am a huge fan of what the Germans are doing with Grauburgunder (and Weissburgunder) too. Everytime I visit producer there, they tell me how they sell out of it quickly. I think there are good examples in the Pfalz too.
      Thanks for watching!

Here in Germany at least my complaint about many cheap Pinot Grigios is not so much that they are thin and short, but rather than they a a bit sweet. They are often sweet, fruity, simple, I used to view them as the Prosecco of still wine (I'm sure there are also good Proseccos) but it seems that the style is different in the US.

I hear you about cheap German Grauburgunder. I do think there are very good top level ones being made there though. I loooooveee German wine and you’ll see some in future videos 😉

Had a 2016 Pinot Gris from a grand cru in Alsace. It was $75 on the restaurant menu so it was obviously marked up. I should have gotten 3 or 4 bottles. Absolutely beautiful- would have put it up against a fine Riesling.

Tramin is an hell of a winery 🔥 i wasn't into wine at all last year and then i had a bottle of their 2016 Nussbaumer Gewurztraminer... now I'm studying for WSET 2 lol
You should try San Michele Appiano wines too, A+ co-operative winery.

I remember trying the 2017 version of the Tramin Unterebner and being blown away by the richness and complexity. From my recollection, the quality for $35 is incredible - as often is in Alto Ridge!

Last time I had one was studying for west 3. We always have to try one and none ever wow me. I only every buy one if my grandma comes over cause she only drinks white wine. I make sure to buy Friuli Venezia Giulia ones since she was born near that region

You are a thoughtful guy! Well at least you’re attempting to get the good stuff. I love FVG, one of my favorite regions in the world.

Ah yes just like Wineking Peter said - cheaper Pinot Grigio tastes like nothing and has no finish! I must admit yellowtail/barefoot pinot grigio was my go to for cooking risotto or pasta though!

    • @drmatthewhorkey
      @drmatthewhorkey  Рік тому

I have to admit that Barefoot is OKkkkkk for the price. I was actually hoping that this cheap Pinot Grigio was better so I could recommend it, but…
