Hi Diane. 55 year old learner here. My first driving instructor told me that the failure level for people my age was extremely high. I was very upset So left him and now I'm after 6 lessons with my new instructor. And he had no problem with my age and learning to drive. Delighted to have found your videos. They are a great help.
In my experience pass rates among the elder folk are above average if anything because the tester does not have as high a threshold as they would require from a young 17 year old. People your age are generally endowed with more experience and common sense which comes in handy during a test. Don't listen to the rubbish spouted by the first instructor, take it from me you have as good, if not a better, chance of passing your test.
This was exactly what failed my last test. I was in the box and it turned red but I hesitated and didn’t move, the examiner had to tell me to move on. It was a distaste and an automatic fail. Thanks for this Dane
It happened to me as well, I was waiting for the filter light to showed up, but it didn't appear. The trafic light turns to red wasn't able to react cause I was expcting filter will show up. This failed me the exam, was grand with the others, worse was it's the end of the test and were good to go back in the testing center 💔.
Hi Dane! I failed my first test on traffic lights - I didnt know about the moving into the turning right box and the "cyclist bay" and got 2 grade 3s for those. I'm taking my test again next Tuesday and finding your channel has really helped me to get my confidence back! Have a nice day :)
I only got 2 grade 2 faults but failed because I didn't know what you had said at 4:00 before my test in September, thank you for this video. Wish me luck for the next one! I really hope i pass
Thank you for the brilliant video. I failed my test because I didn’t move in the centre as there was already a car in the junction. In what situations should I join the 1st car in the junction ? I always thought only 1 car can move in the middle while others wait behind stop line for 1st one to cross or move if a green filter arrow appears
I was failed for moving towards a right turning box on green. And I am fully aware that I need to wait for the right filter light to complete the turn. This was in Tallaght testing Centre.
Either I'm missing something or you are not telling me the full version here. You don't fail for moving towards a right turning box on green, I'd say the real reason you failed was not understanding what you did wrong or maybe you forgot or maybe you failed in other ways. I say that because your comment makes no sense in the real world.
Thanks Dane . And can I write what I understand from this video, excuse me my English not my first language. You mean when the trrafice is being green I have to move to the turnning box and if there is a chance to go right i can? Even if the green arrow doesn't appear ?? And in some traffic lights there are no green arrow here what should i do ? Pass on green if the way is clear ? When it become red also turn to prevent blocking the way am I write the correct way 😅? Thanks for your help and support
If the main light goes red when you are in the turning box, should you wait for the filter light to turn green or go if it’s safe regardless of whether the filter light is green or not?
Hello! I was recently suggested your channel and videos and I found them really helpful! Could I suggest a video for drivers who have a License from another country, where they taught to drive from the other side? Thank you!
people who honk you when you turn right when there is a sufficient gap between you and the oncoming car is probably someone from another EU Union who just exchanged his driver license to irish driving license and didnt undergo proper process to acquire a local license in ireland. if there is an opening and you are in the middle, take it before red light. sometimes you cant avoid being caught with red in the middle but move right if you can
Great thanks so much, but I'll give one scenario where there's a car in the front on the box, im next one to take right am i supposed to queue him or just wait in the same place? I did this mistake and i didn't queue for that i got grade 3. I dunno its a shear stupid law i feel
Hi Dane, At 4:00, do I need to wait for the filtered traffic light to turn green or can I complete my right turn if there is no oncoming traffic and it’s safe to move while the solid light is still green?
When stopped is it okay to keep one hand on the handbrake so i feel more prepared to go? I know you should keep two hands on the wheel ideally but would i get a mark for doing this?
Another question when the full light is green but the filter light has not turned green yet is it okay to make the turn as long as there is no oncoming traffic?
One hand on the handbrake is fine when stopped, you must roll forward on a full green light if safe, then wait for a safe gap and proceed, it's just like I've shown you in the video.
A filter lane will not always have a turning box, it entirely depends on the situation. A filter lane should be clearly marked out with white lines and hatched lines as well
Yes go into the middle just like I explained here, you don't need a yellow or white box to allow you to proceed into the middle of the junction once it's safe to do so.
Hi Dane 👋 Thaks for the video. Just for clarification; when you passed the first lights, one of the lights were green but not arrow one yet. Are you still allowed to turn right carefully or you have to wait for green turning right light 🤔
Hello, I have a question, if the turn right box it is way before the junction, where should I wait? At the box or at junction level? It is a case of this in Tallagh's center. Thanks Dane!
Hi Dane, could you please make a video on "U-turns" or post a link if you already have done one. In some places where is no - U-turn prohibited sign board, I have noticed cars taking a u-turn. So i was wondering how to judge or when is it ok to take a u turn? Pls adivse
Is this the case for all filter lights? Do you have to wait in the box junction until the arrow comes on or if there’s no cars coming can you complete the turn without the arrow light coming on?

My quetion is in this situation are you showing if you get a green light and move to the turn position but the flilter light is yet to come on if its clear to make the right turn is that legal to do so if must you wait for the filter light if there is a filter light? Hi Dane i have question. If i am on right turning boX and trafic light goes red. Then what can i do. Do i turn right ? Or I will wait in turning box for green light? Plz reply ASAP THANKS
Thanks Dane! Just a question. When you're at a traffic light at a junction and you need to turn either left or right. When it turns green, after you move off in 1st gear do you stay in 1st till you finish the turn or should you go second gear before you turn?
Got a grade 3 in my test for progress as I thought I had to wait until the filter light went green to turn right and ended up staying at the junction for too long. So does that mean it’s alright to take a turn if there’s no oncoming traffic even if the filter light hasn’t turned green?
Hi Dane, while full green light is ON, then I move to centre box and assume there is no oncoming traffic, shall I turn right immediately or should I wait for filter light to turn green.
Hi Dane, i have a question about the yellow box. When the solid green light shows, is it a must to wait in the yellow box? but after that a right turn green light will show up. Becasue i got a grade 3 just because when the solid green light shows up and i did not wait in the yellow box. At the moment due to quite heavy traffic i decide to stay until the right turn green light show up to prevent stuck in the yellow box. Hope you can give me some advice. Thanks in advance.
You are not showing good progress or confidence by waiting back, you need to go into the middle of the junction. All this is explained in the video. Tester was correct.
Who on earth told you that?? This is why learner drivers should get professional driving lessons. You can go into the middle whether there's a box or no box. Jesus christ.
Hi Dane just a quick question regarding coasting, when I am changing gears from 4 to 2 let’s say before I make a right or left turn, I go very slow coming off the clutch from 3 then change to 2 but again very slow of the clutch, I always have it completely off because I take the turn, but I’m scared i will be done for coasting when I am changing from 4-2 as I come slowly off the clutch each time but I have to as I have a 1 litre car and it jerks otherwise My instructor has never commented on it, and I have tried block changing but I was advised not to do it from my instructor. Any advice or help?
If you are coming off the clutch slowly then that's fine because your foot is lifting up, you can be slow for the last 30 % of your uplift as that's the important bit. There's nothing wrong with skipping a gear, it is a preferred option. Staying on the brake can help give you time and avoid jumps like I do here ua-cam.com/video/s7QjfXslfm0/v-deo.html
Hi Dane, I had same situation in my driving test but there is no box on the ground and i decided to wait for the green arrow and i had in total 6 marks but still she faild my driving test because of this is that fair what's your opinion please let me know. Keep up the good work i will be going to my driving test on Monday i hope everything will be okey this time.
Sounds like the tester did the right thing, you need to show them that you understand the rules of the road and your lack of knowledge cost you. Good luck with your test next time.
If the filter light is red for turning right but the arrow for straight ahead is Green can you move up and make the turn if there are no oncoming cars? Cheers Boss
I was there today on my bike and I didnt realise that area was for cyclists. I was in the cycling lane on the left and thought I should just turn right from there, but the cars started going straight. I decided to stop and went on the footpath. What should I have done? When I was on the cycling lane, should I have gone on the road a bit earlier and stopped at the cycling area? Thanks :)
Hi Dane, what happens when I get a green light to move out into the box but the road I am looking to make the right turn into is blocked by stopped traffic and therefore I cannot clear the middle of the road, do I remain at the lights altogether to avoid getting stuck in the middle? This is an issue in Tallaght as there is road works going on. What will the tester expect? Cheers.
Hi, just wondering, when you were waiting to turn right in the video, oncoming cars had the right of way to come through, do they also have the right of way over you if they were turning left or right? Thank you - Ian
When Turning right at lights there is often a yellow box. Can only one car enter this box while waiting to turn right ? Do the cars behind have to wait Behind stop line?
Usually one car because if a second car enters he may get stuck on a pedestrian crossing or stuck in the box if the first car doesn't clear/or is slow to clear the junction.
Hi Dane , if you are at a junction like in this video and you cannot see a turning box (not sure if faded or never there at all) would you move forward anyway when the light is green and wait for a filter? Thanks 😊
@@DaneTygheletsdrive if you are the second car waiting on green do you stay back at the first white line or follow the car into the junction and wait just behind the first car in the turn box?
Hi I had a situation where I had to take a right turn but I end up stuck in the box. The filter light never showed up and traffic was so heavy. And later when the right turn green Light showed up,I took my turn. I failed for that reason from Tallaght test centre. Does this make any sense? Thanks
Hi. Could I ask if the light is green and there is a car in front of me in the box to turn right, do I stay behind the cycle line until the car in front turns or do I just follow it even if I am on the cycle line but the light is green?
Hi Dane just wondering could you help me. I failed my test because I was in a junction turning right and was waiting for a gap in the oncoming traffic. This junction had no filter light so when the light turned red I was prepared to complete my turn, but an oncoming car broke the red light and forced me to stay in the middle of the road for too long. I’m not sure what would be the correct thing to do I managed to complete the turn as I would have blocked all traffic but my tester said I took too long to complete
Hard to say. It looks like you understand the rules and did your best to follow them. However the tester is basically saying that you did the right thing at the wrong time. Maybe you missed another gap to turn?
If there is no turning box or yellow box in the centre of the crossroad and if I am the first car at the line, should I move out to the middle when the light goes green?
I had my test today but u forgot my drivers license... Now I have to wait another 6 months ontop of the the 2 and a half years I already waited to sit my test :( thanks for the reply your videos are great
In this situation if the filter light wasn't on but the full green light was on and there was a gap , could you make the turn, if it was safe to do so?
Hi Dane , you mentioned not to get stuck at the junction if the lights turn. My question is if there is no secondary light to turn right and I must wait until its safe to turn right and in the mean time the lights turn red , can I still fail ?
Yes you can, if there's no filter light then you just rely on the main green light. But if you remain in the centre of the junction after it goes red then you will fail the test.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Ah, so if there is no filter light then traffic oncoming will be stopped by a red light? in order for the other traffic to proceed and turn right? Or how can one not get stuck in the centre of the junction if there is heavy oncoming traffic?
Usually the lights they face and the lights you face are the same, there won't be a constant line of traffic so you have to be ready to go and clear the junction.
You really do cover every topic !!! I struggled to find an answer on the turning box and you solved it here. My local junction has a yellow box and before the yellow box there is a turning box, when lights go red I clear the junction like I normally would at crossroads but was a little unsure if the examiner expected me to wait in the box on red which I now know he expects me to clear the junction, thank you !!!!
Hi Dane, I just failed my test for progress at traffic lights. I arrived at the junction to find a full red light so I stopped. I then realize that there was a green filter light on the opposite side of the junction and a queue of roughly four cars waiting to turn. I quickly joined the queue but knew I had already failed for hesitation. When I arrived in the box the cars in front of me completed their turn but when I got there cars turning left proceeded. Did they have right of way there?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Hi Dane, thanks for replying! The light turned red while I was in the box so I was kind of stranded but had no way of going before then.
I wish I see this video before my test I got grade 3 just because of turning right in junction I wait for Filter light I mean green arrow then I roll up instructor told me you don't need to wait for Filter light when you got a gap you need to proceed and I know two time there was a big gap and I missed it I am so unlucky that only for this mistake I failed my test
Great stuff, I've got a question though. If I'm staying in the middle, and for some reason, the light goes yellow, should I progress then with turning?
I failed my test as I was coming up to a traffic light because I was told to turn right but on my left there was a big semi truck blocking my view of the left so I thought the best thing to do was to slow down and wait till he had passed but the guy told me that I should of kept moving as it was a green light even though my view was obstructed on the left
If you had a green light you should have kept going, there's no need for you to stop, the traffic on your left would have a red light. You just held up traffic and caused delays unfortunately.
Never understood why you have to stop and engage the handbrake it makes sense on a hill but on a straight road it's more of an hazard than a safety measure if you have to avoid someone or get away from crash disengaging your handbrake and and putting in your gear and then trying to move will be too late , I did it for my test but it makes no sense and isn't even a thing in germany
Well let me try and help you understand because knowledge is power. There is no law requiring you to use a handbrake in Ireland, its just general safety advice. Using it makes the car more secure and not everyone can judge a hill as accurately as you. That's why a lot of modern cars have auto hold. If a car crashes in to your back then having the handbrake up helps avoid you being shunted forwards and onto oncoming traffic. If you want to get away from someone then why would the handbrake stop you? Surely you'd just let it down and proceed? The same if you want to escape a crash, I don't understand your logic.
Hi Dane! I have a situation; the traffic light turned green and Im turning right so I moved in the middle of the junction and waiting to give way to vehicles approaching of the opposite lane, BUT unlike this video, there are no traffic lights for filter lanes (for turning right) and it was busy, too many vehicles passed (no gaps) and I'm still waiting and anxious that the lights will eventually changed to amber or worse to red and will be stranded. What Im gonna do?
Sometimes oncoming traffic is too heavy for turning right while waiting in the centre box and can only proceed when other lights turn amber or red, will I loose mark on that too ?
No, you have to clear the junction. That means even if the light goes red while you're waiting to turn right, once the traffic has cleared and its safe to take your turn you must take your turn
I got failed because I stop at red light. The traffic in the round about, i stop when the students passed the the pedestrian road even when the lights is green, when they passed, the light straight turn to red, so I stopped but for my report I got grade 3.
I'm not sure if I understand you, are you saying that you stopped when a pedestrian crossed the road? But did that pedestrian have the right of way? You should not be encouraging people to cross the road, if you have a green light then go if it is safe, don't wait for pedestrians to cross.
The few students pressed the pedestrian lights, but they crossed road when it's red light, when they crossed the road, the traffic light turned to red so I stopped wait until the traffic light turned to green than I proceeded.

Do you have to wait in neutral at traffic lights or can you wait in first gear with the clutch down waiting for lights to change?
You can wait in 1st gear if at or near the top of the queue, if you're 4 or 5 cars back then maybe neutral.

I was in the cycling lane on the left and thought I should just turn right from there, but the cars started going straight. I decided to stop and went on the footpath. What should I have done? When I was on the cycling lane, should I have gone on the road a bit earlier and stopped at the cycling area? Thanks :)
Depends on what side you came from but you can use the cycle lane for left and straight, but use the advanced stop line if one is there for a right.
If I find myself in a turning box and the light turns red, am I allowed to make the turn (if safe) ?
Yes
Hi Dane, what happens when I get a green light to move out into the box but the road I am looking to make the right turn into is blocked by stopped traffic and therefore I cannot clear the middle of the road, do I remain at the lights altogether to avoid getting stuck in the middle? This is an issue in Tallaght as there is road works going on. What will the tester expect? Cheers.
You may have to Hold back behind the line then, but surely the traffic will clear eventually? What does your driving instructor say?
When I'm coming thru the lights to turn right and an on coming car is turning right do I turn in front or behind then
Depends on how wide the space is, passenger door to passenger door is more common but drivers door to drivers door is safer.
Hi, just wondering, when you were waiting to turn right in the video, oncoming cars had the right of way to come through, do they also have the right of way over you if they were turning left or right? Thank you - Ian
If they were turning left yes, if right possibly, this video will explain -
ua-cam.com/video/yxX38Pe1dKk/v-deo.html
When Turning right at lights there is often a yellow box. Can only one car enter this box while waiting to turn right ? Do the cars behind have to wait Behind stop line?
Usually one car because if a second car enters he may get stuck on a pedestrian crossing or stuck in the box if the first car doesn't clear/or is slow to clear the junction.
Hi Dane , if you are at a junction like in this video and you cannot see a turning box (not sure if faded or never there at all) would you move forward anyway when the light is green and wait for a filter? Thanks 😊
If you're the first car move into middle of the junction on the green light. You don't need to wait for a filter if it's safe to go.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive if you are the second car waiting on green do you stay back at the first white line or follow the car into the junction and wait just behind the first car in the turn box?
Stay back on the smaller junctions and if in doubt. It will depend on the situation.
Hi I had a situation where I had to take a right turn but I end up stuck in the box. The filter light never showed up and traffic was so heavy. And later when the right turn green Light showed up,I took my turn. I failed for that reason from Tallaght test centre. Does this make any sense? Thanks
Did you watch the video? You can't get stuck in the middle, you have to finish your turn.
Hi. Could I ask if the light is green and there is a car in front of me in the box to turn right, do I stay behind the cycle line until the car in front turns or do I just follow it even if I am on the cycle line but the light is green?
Probably best to stay back on the smaller junctions but you could follow the first car up on bigger junctions. Depends on the situation.
Ok thanks so much
Best wishes
If there is no turning box or yellow box in the centre of the crossroad and if I am the first car at the line, should I move out to the middle when the light goes green?
Yes
I had my test today but u forgot my drivers license... Now I have to wait another 6 months ontop of the the 2 and a half years I already waited to sit my test :( thanks for the reply your videos are great
That is a pity but hopefully you won't have to wait too long bec they have taken on extra testers recently.
In this situation if the filter light wasn't on but the full green light was on and there was a gap , could you make the turn, if it was safe to do so?
Yes. You can go right on the full green light if it's safe 😊
If the filter light is green, does that mean the oncoming traffic has a red light?
Yes it usually does.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Okay perfect thanks for Dane ! Your videos are a fantastic help !
My pleasure, best wishes and stay safe
If I were behind you, and the filter light is still green, can I follow you turning right, and I dont have to stay on the truning box?
If the filter light is green keep moving
Thank you sir. 👍🏻
Stay safe
You really do cover every topic !!! I struggled to find an answer on the turning box and you solved it here.
My local junction has a yellow box and before the yellow box there is a turning box, when lights go red I clear the junction like I normally would at crossroads but was a little unsure if the examiner expected me to wait in the box on red which I now know he expects me to clear the junction, thank you !!!!
You know what they say, knowledge is power, best wishes 😊
I was stuck on middle and didn't clear on red lights comes
Hi Dane, I just failed my test for progress at traffic lights. I arrived at the junction to find a full red light so I stopped. I then realize that there was a green filter light on the opposite side of the junction and a queue of roughly four cars waiting to turn. I quickly joined the queue but knew I had already failed for hesitation. When I arrived in the box the cars in front of me completed their turn but when I got there cars turning left proceeded. Did they have right of way there?
If your arrow was green you had right of way. Did the light turn red while you were waiting?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Hi Dane, thanks for replying! The light turned red while I was in the box so I was kind of stranded but had no way of going before then.
Hard to say but it seems that you should have completed your turn sooner.
Can we wait at traffic lights in second gear ?
If it turns you on yes, but why would you want to wait in 2nd gear? Makes zero sense.
😟 thanks 😃 🙏
Best wishes
I wish I see this video before my test I got grade 3 just because of turning right in junction I wait for Filter light I mean green arrow then I roll up instructor told me you don't need to wait for Filter light when you got a gap you need to proceed and I know two time there was a big gap and I missed it I am so unlucky that only for this mistake I failed my test
You were not unlucky, you were just unprepared and unfortunately you didn't know the rules. Hopefully you can do better next time.
Great stuff, I've got a question though. If I'm staying in the middle, and for some reason, the light goes yellow, should I progress then with turning?
Yes, you can't stay stranded in the middle of the junction.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive yes I was so upset 😞 but now I know next time !
Best of luck with the driving test next time 🙂
I failed because I got nervous.. I watched this video before more than once but in the test my cell brain didn’t work 😂😂😂
Same 😂
Never understood why you have to stop and engage the handbrake it makes sense on a hill but on a straight road it's more of an hazard than a safety measure if you have to avoid someone or get away from crash disengaging your handbrake and and putting in your gear and then trying to move will be too late , I did it for my test but it makes no sense and isn't even a thing in germany
Go after the last car passes because if you don't you'll end up stranded in the middle of the junction. Be ready in 1st gear.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive even the light changed to red?
ESPECIALLY when the light changes to red
Sometimes oncoming traffic is too heavy for turning right while waiting in the centre box and can only proceed when other lights turn amber or red, will I loose mark on that too ?
No, you have to clear the junction. That means even if the light goes red while you're waiting to turn right, once the traffic has cleared and its safe to take your turn you must take your turn
@@jamesrowland3857 thank you so much for your advice James.
Yes James is correct 👍
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Hi Dane, does this apply also when you are in the box and not in the middle of a junction? Thanks so much.
Yes that's the rule anytime you're in the middle of a junction.
How to use proper turning left
I don't know what you mean or what you are trying to say.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive sorry
Can i ask you how to pass may driving test because this my 4 times i failed
Practice, lessons and positive thinking. It also helps to avoid thinking you have an automatic right to pass.

Some people call me the Great Dane! Or GD for short.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive 😄 Well done Dane. And thanks again
My pleasure, stay safe and keep it real.
I got failed because I stop at red light. The traffic in the round about, i stop when the students passed the the pedestrian road even when the lights is green, when they passed, the light straight turn to red, so I stopped but for my report I got grade 3.
Maybe you took too long to move off
@@DaneTygheletsdrive No, I am the first car, so when when red light one I stopped, when it turned to green I move straight, so I just very confused.
So if pedestrians cross doesn't have pedestrian but on red light, will I fail when I stop?
I'm not sure if I understand you, are you saying that you stopped when a pedestrian crossed the road? But did that pedestrian have the right of way? You should not be encouraging people to cross the road, if you have a green light then go if it is safe, don't wait for pedestrians to cross.
The few students pressed the pedestrian lights, but they crossed road when it's red light, when they crossed the road, the traffic light turned to red so I stopped wait until the traffic light turned to green than I proceeded.
