Actually in Tanzer you must keep those orbs "alive" if you want the good ending: I think those orbs have kidnapped people inside and you must keep them(they're basically jump blocker you're not supposed to jump on them)...otherwise the ending will be like "Ok you win but there is no one alive to see that"
Yeah, I missed Legend of Wukong, my bad. Star Odyssey I didn't count because I don't consider it a limited release. It's the same reason why I didn't include the re-release of Megaman Willy Wars or Mega Turrican.
Great review! I have two suggestions for next videos (maybe about other platforms?) 1) Always mention the year of the release, as this makes a lot of difference. Development tools evolve considerably. 2) Use the black bars on the sides to always display the game title. This way you won't have to go back to check it if you forgot while was paying attention to the graphic and sound details
Oh those are some nice sugestions, I hadn't considered that. Thank you for that. If it helps, you can check the timestamps for the name of the game too :)
@@st1ka You taking the time to do the timestamps is greatly appreciated. But I second both of these suggestions as it makes it much easier to simply see the game name and even year it was made. Shmup Junkie does this on his similar vids and it's super helpful when trying to find where to buy/play the games.
Great video! I hadn’t realized so many of these titles had been released on the Evercade line of consoles. Brave Battle Saga is fire and Xenocrisis is amazing. I really want to play Demons of Asteborg and I’m crossing my fingers that Phantom Gear turns out well. Thanks for your hard work on this video!
Probably someone mentioned it already. But there is also the megadrive port of cave story, officially acknowledge by the main site. Maybe it is not on the list because the game was never sold, it was always free, just like the original cave story. But it is a fantastic port of a fantastic game. One of those new games that you know could have easily been a top 10 mega drive game if it was released back in the day.
Water Margin immediately had my attention by being (presumably) based on one of the all time great Wuxia novels. I'm always surprised that more Wuxia stories have yet to be adapted to video games, so much potential!
@@absinthe4breakfast299 the japanese 70s one? That show is damn cool. There is also a Pokemon clone RPG on GBC based on water margin, that seems pretty cool (if you can read chinese)
@@noaht2005 No kidding? There's a weird amount of Pokemon games based on classics of Eastern literature. Thank you for sharing and I might have to look into that TV show as well.
Always enjoy your stuff. I had a hard time with Switchblade locking up on me - although I only tried it on an Analogue Mega SG and not official hardware. Love Xeno Crisis and Tanglewood, personally speaking
_Man._ _Tanglewood._ I knew I loved this game dearly. First played it during the lockdown times- but I didn't realize quite how much of an impact it had on me until I got chills hearing the title screen theme here. There really _isn't_ another game like it on the platform, and there aren't a lot of games like it in general. What a beautiful journey that game is. I'm pleasantly surprised by the number of these games I haven't heard of- I thought I'd done a pretty good job keeping up with what's been going on with new Genesis/Megadrive titles, but there's SO much here for me to dig into. Thanks for this!
@Gatorade69 the game is very minimalistic which can be a hit or miss depending on what you're looking for. For some people it might feel barebones, for others it feels immersive and even verges on horror
I bought Tanglewood for hacked Sega mini and it works great with picodrive emulator but needed to press Start instead of A button, it's a fun unique game. Also bought bio evil and Demons of Asteborg both very good. I don't mind buying 16bit games under $20 and supporting indie content.
Been looking forward to watching this since I saw on Twitter you were working on it. This will be a good one to wind down with at the end of the night. Thanks for reviewing these.
Great video! In my opinion, Pulseman has the best voice acting on the console. A TV news host and a radio buddy both get the job done! There is also some football games with commentary, but I haven't played them. You can use those rocks of Edessot to attack flying monsters (we actually added that to balance things out at the start of the game), and almost all magic attacks and many stronger normal attacks work on them too. Yeah, I should have written an NPC with some directions where Alina went, sorry about that! Next game won't have this problem for sure!
Enjoyed the video my friend, nice work as always 💪. Lots of games in here I didn’t know about and some that look very cool and I plan to try. There’s one I didn’t see here and absolutely love called Omega Blast. It’s a caravan only 3min vertical shooter so it’s not a full game per se, it’s for playing for high score. Mega Drive exclusive and it’s free. But it’s sooo much fun and one of the best caravan levels I’ve ever played. We even did a competition for it a couple years ago and everyone loved it. It was in an older video of mine. I’d recommend trying it one day for fun. Warning yes it’s hard 😂
ah, I know about that game and it's super fun. I honestly didn't include it because I wanted games that would have felt like full releases. But that is a quality release :P
Excellent video. This is one I really wanted to see! I have many of these games and it was great to hear your thoughts on them. My top two favorites from these games would be Paprium and Tanglewood.
Just WOW!! I honestly hadn't heard of the most of these. Anyway, I'm already looking up copies of Darius and Tanzer (I already picked up Xeno Crisis on Neo Geo CD, so I can give that a miss). Cheers St1ka!!
Thanks, I didn't know "Canon : Legend of the new gods", and "Water Margin" looks nice as well. I just hope one day that someone (maybe me with SGDK ?) will make a game like Crusader of Centy / Oasis, we have too many platformers on Megadrive.
*_D&D_* has such a large community, that frankly I'm _SHOCKED_ that nobody has done a romhack OR homebrew of *_Dungeons & Dragons - Warriors of the Eternal Sun._* ...Controversial opinion here, but *_D&D WOTES_* is absolutely amazing, imo !!! ...And frankly, since we were cheated out of a great *_Star Trek_* game and they just gave us mediocre titles instead, I think a *_Star Trek_* themed romhack of *_WOTES_* would be awesome !!! The game has 7 races by default, but it looks like there's room to expand up to 10 races. So, the question arises, what 10 *_Star Trek_* races would YOU add to such a romhack ? And what would your 4 party members be ??? Me personally, Imma say... 1. Male Aenarr / Female Betazoid (both Healers with Telepathy). 2. Male Human / Female Augment 3. Male Android / Female Borg. 4. Male Ferengi / Female Changling (both Rogue-like). 5. Male Klingon / Female Andorian (both Fighters). 6. Vulcan 7. Male Denobulan / Female Trill (both Scientists & Medics). 8. Male Cardassian / Female Bajoran 9. Male Nausicaan / Female Caitian 10. Male Gorn / Female Orion 11. Male Xindi Reptilian / Female Xindi Insectoid. Jeez, I cheated hard on that list to fit in extra species... Here's a non-cheated list: 1. Human 2. Android 3. Ferengi 4. Klingon 5. Andorian 6. Aenar 7. Vulcan 8. Betazoid 9. Changling 10. Borg Altho, my four party members would probably Android, Klingon, & Andorian to overpower everything with a Ferengi Rogue to haggle, pick locks, disable traps, & steal stuff :P
The backwards parallax scrolling in Jim Power makes it hard to look at. Why have they made the background layers go in the opposite direction? Gives me a headache.
@@st1kaThe reason was that it was to allow the 3D effect gimmick that the game had going on to work. The SNES version came with 3D glasses to facilitate this... not to say the effect was very GOOD mind you...
My cousin had a Mega Drive (or as we know in China, Sega 5th Generation) and Canon, so I played the (BEEP) out of it when he visit my home back in the day. That game had surprising amount of secret in it, where multiple maps has hidden treasure chest you can find that give you 1 level up items. The way to deal with the constant respawn enemy in later stages is leave a sacrifice member behind to attract their attention while your main part go forward. And it becomes extremely easy once the female main character level up enough to get a magic which let you revive your party member in the map, and equip her with that auto MP recovery item. Also, the last stage/boss is legitimately the easiest in any game as you get two respawn enemies where one drops you HP recovery, the other give you MP recovery item. And you can basically endlessly send kamikaze characters to bomb the final boss (who can't move), and revive them when they die.
Arkagi’s Revolution is so awesome, and I’m so hype for Arkagi’s Escape as he seems to be experimenting with a 3d first person perspective this time, and I love 3d on 16 bit consoles. I’m happy more people are positive on it
Super random but I just noticed that Coffee Crisis takes place in my hometown, Pittsburgh PA. PNC Park, yellow suspension bridges, and the US Steel tower are pretty easily recognizable. Neat.
Thnx for doing this and putting the games and time stamps in the description. I was updating the list of games I wanna get and this helped me choose some good ones to go on the hunt for. I do have Generals of the Yang Family, Canon: Legend of the new Gods, Water Margin, Tanglewood and The cursed Knight and hope to get Pier Solar, Life on Mars: Genesis, Brave Battle Saga - Legend of the Magic Warrior, Demons of Asteborg, Ultracore and Paprium. I'd like Fx Unit Yuki but heard it only works on Model 1 Genesis's and I only got a Model 2 I backed Affinity Sorrow and The Black Jewel Reborn when the Kickstarters were on. The Genesis is my fave system and i had some good times with it so new games on it in this distant future year of the 2020s (When Robotech II The Sentinels happened) is quite grande.
Thanks for the video it was fun to watch. There were a few modern Mega Drive games that weren't in your video. The Cave Story port, for example, is amazing and the latest version (0.8.0) was released last year, and may well be the final one because the game is complete except for some very minor bugs. There were also some upcoming games like the amazing Real (Rheo) Bout Fatal Fury port by Rheo Gamer or Dino Fighters by Juca Jucare that weren't spotlighted. A shame since they deserve the exposure.
@@st1ka That's fair enough. Shame as there are a some newer completely free games that deserve to be on a list like this. I think Devwill Too Prologue, Insane Pain and Fight for Vengeance were sold or at least had Kick Starters though.
I haven't tried Tanglewood but it looks like it plays a little similarly to Pocahontas. Is it like that? Or is it more action based and less puzzle solving?
L'Abbaye des Morts looks SWEET! I love these sorts of platformers that are more styled like Jet Set Willy, Montezuma's Revenge and the first two Pitfall games where it's more about avoiding obstacles and moving from screen to screen non-linearly looking for something than any more "modern" (modern here meaning made after 1985...) Definitely going to try it out. Thank you for bringing it to my attention St1ka!
A new version of "Sunset Riders" was indeed necessary. I don't know if it becomes the definitive 16bit version, but I'm sure when finished it's much better than the flawed standard MD port...
@@st1ka your're right, the old Megadrive Sunset Riders is not a bad game (altrough it's to hard for the wrong reasons imo), but it's inferior compared to the arcade and SNES versions. The new arranged MD version helps out for sure!
I think the reason people didn't get their game is because there was a link in the Watermelon email that took you to another page where you entered your address. I found this link years after I had already moved to another city and entered my new address. I received my copy of the game within a few weeks from entering my new address, so I'm pretty sure that obscured link is what tripped people up. It wasn't intuitive at all, and I could have just as easily missed it.
Spot on about Paprium, haters going to hate the final product. The game is mind-blowing for what it's running on. This came out back in the day that's how I judge games and it would have just rocked the world of 16-bit Genesis gaming and made anyone else on a lot of other platforms very jealous. That's how I judge these new games how would they been perceived in the system's original life cycle. I'm one of the lucky few that got all my copies of paprium and my two sticks. I was also there at the beginning of Pier solar. I really enjoyed that game too with the special tricks with Sega CD aided soundtrack and completed it and thought it was one of the most thought-provoking endings. I'd love to see what Fonzie can do with the Neo Geo, I can only imagine paprium on that platform.
Some of the Taiwanese games that got discovered years later really needed a lot of bugs to be removed to make them even somewhat playable when they got a modern release. It really does show they were just slapped together to make money. Some of the recently released games and ones in development are really benefiting from having such a good software development kit and much better tools that most pcs can access means that so many people are willing to try their hand at making games.
I made myself a physical copy of the english patch of brave battle saga a long time ago, first time I tried it I ended up playing for 13 hours straight even though I have an incedibly short attention span when it comes to rpg's, it's an absolutely incredible game. But my point was that there wasn't any bugs in that version, did Piko release it later? my guess from what I've seen from them is that if there's any bugs they were probably introduced from them poking around. If I owned the rights to Jim Power for example I'd first fix the parallax so it scrolls the right direction, then the inaccurate and disturbing dog legs, and finish the unfinished bossfights, what did they do.. remove the grass animation, awesome improvement 👏
17:59 *_Canon - The Legend of the New Gods_* looks pretty fvcking _SWEET_ !!! TY !!! ooo, 21:36 *_Pier Solar_* + 37:37 *_Barver Battle Saga_* both look pretty sweet as well, I _LOVE_ *_RPGs_* :P Btw, what's the game with the flying Griffon looking-thing at 0:03 seconds ? ooo, it's *_Demons of Asteborg_* at 38:52 !!! ...I was able to download most of the games in the video, but I cannot find a demo of the *_ZPF_* Shoot'em-Up :(
Great video St1ka. So many games and so much to say. I hope you don't mind all my comments. Let's start with the good. I was thinking you'd go Demons, XenoCrisis, Ultracore, Tanzer and Paprium in some order as the top 5 and seeing the list I'm not too surprised Darius is in that group. I said in your original video I'm so glad to see someone else like this game and I don't understand all the hate it got for the version that was included on the Genesis Mini. As for Demons, I still really, really like it as is but feel like they missed a golden opportunity. This could have been the PERFECT metroidvania if you kept your abilities and having the town as a sort of central hub but even as is I think just one more level before you turn into a demon and that level you get all the abilities and have to use them all that would have put Demons over the top. As for Paprium, I'll take your word for it as it looks like I'll never get the chance to play. What a shame.
Yeah, I feel Demons of Asteborg was a bit of a missed opportunity. It's good, but it could have been incredible! But the focus on puzzle solving ruined the pacing imo.
Nice video. Is that really all of the games that match your rules? For example, shouldn't Attack of the Petscii Robots have been included? Or Legend of Wukong?
To be honest, I feel Attack of the Petscii Robots doesn't feel like something that would have been officially launched back in the day, hence why I didn't include it. Legend of Wukong on the other hand, you're right. I forgot about that one >_>
@@st1ka In my mind Attack of the Petscii Robots falls in the same category as L'Abbaye Des Morts and Switchblade. A game that was developed for old computers and that underutilizes the Mega Drive. Anyway, no big deal, it's still a nice list. And yeah, Legend of Wukong deserves to be forgotten.
You might not be too familiar with the source material, as you are Portuguese, but there's an ongoing project to do a port of Street Chaves to the Mega Drive
All those vertical stripes on the Duke3D game make me wonder - NTSC artifact colors maybe? I.e. would this actually look pretty on a NTSC TV, generating more colors than the thing can normally handle?
Well, it's cool to see new game for old systems and it also makes the games feel more authentic. The issue with a lot of indie games that mimic retro games is that they often do things the original consoles couldn't and sometimes it breaks the immersion
Nice selection, thanks! I love Tänzer because of its buttery smooth gameplay and extremely responsive controls. And you can actually buy it...unlike the cruel joke that is Paprium. Seriously, the kickstarter shows that Fonzie has learned nothing from the innitial release. By the time this will see a release that is available to everybody willing to pay people will pirate it just to show him where he can stick his business tactics...
I finished Brave Battle Saga recently, and while I liked my time with the game, I have some issues regarding the balancing, because most of the equip I bought have almost no change in how much damage I receive, and leveling up didn't help. Also, I don't recomend the Steam version that much because, for some reason, the code for level 99 doesn't work there (which is strange, because it's emulation). Sometimes, the game relies on too much fetch questing (when the MC fell sick, we had to ask for the help of the Goddess of Life, but she asked the group to recovered the captured fairies, the guy who captured the fairies asked for help to lift his curse, and to lift his curse we need to get and specific item on a mountain, and we only know about the item when we talked with the goddess about the guy's curse), and despite the game being straightforward, the navigation on some points are a absolute nightmare. I needed to get this out of my chest since I finished the game. Anyway, nice video, although Insane Pain, a fighting game released in december (I think) isn't in the video. The rom is available for free, but the devs are also selling physical copies of the game. I played a lot of the games on this video, and it's fantastic how, since the advent of the SGDK, it's easier to make a Mega Drive game, but kudos to the guys before that time that were able to do something for our beloved 16-bit machine.
@@st1ka The funny thing about brave battle saga... Is that there's a NES bootleg port. It doesn't recreate the game in a 1 by 1 scale (they omitted the intro scene with Lucia and his dad) and I will give it a try to see any differences. (There's a whole treasure of NES bootleg RPG's, that I fell into the rabbit hole ;p )
Spot on with Ultracore , superb game on all levels, graphically the amount of moving stuff onscreen becomes impressive particularly later on when the sprite count gets up - explosions are well detailed and bouncing off enemies is just so much fun and becomes a geniune tactic, sonically its a masterpiece and the soundtrack has a tonne of bangers . You hit the nail on the head , that one spot in the game is the hardest part and could have been a tad easier lol .. the secret parts of the levels add a great challenge and replay value. Ultracore is a top 3 genesis game for me period. Paprium also looks amazing - the sheer amount going on is incredible , pity about the cart only release as very few will be able to play it on the MD.
@@guillaumenunes9319 Yeah such a gem and glad it was brought into the light of day , there maybe an Amiga version out there somewhere unreleased too - rumoured. I first played this on the Mega SG , it was a sell in for the console - however its version is brutal as you can't hold more than 2 guns and a few other things which made it more difficult , the columbus circle release is much better as you can change between all weapons. I think it was tweaked for the later release.
oh how interesting, I wonder how the amiga version compares to the mega drive version. I own the Strictly Limited Games physical edition of Utlracore and it lets you cycle between all weapons as well. I didn't know there was a version that only lets you carry two weapons at a time.
@@st1ka Yeah it was the pack in release on the Mega SG eg the built in Rom , its much more difficult as you have to discard a weapon every time you pick up one or choose not to pickup - greatly prefer the Columbus release. Would love to see the Amiga version if it exists, I suspect it would lose the parrallax but it could do the rest at a lower colour count , would have great sound on the Amiga however.
There exists even a SNES version of "Eyra - The Crow Maiden", at least I saw a short comparison between MD and SNES (so it could be still in progress), but it seems to be the same like the MD version, just a little more colorful and with slightly different sound.
@@st1ka like I said, I don't know if it's finished now, I think what I saw a few months ago was just a demo! I have to look for it now, it would be interesting to know...
@Dean Satan this game doesn't relies on cpu speed. It's 1:1 the same (also the AI and speed, alone the horizontal resolution is lower. 4 times faster? 3,58 is 25% of 7.6? That's new for me, but thanks for the math.
Great video as always. Tanzer is top of my list but I've not played Paprium yet. As far as Xeno Crisis goes I'd recommend anyone wanting to play the mega drive version to get an Evercade as the controls on that are perfect and were done by bitmap themselves.
Yo bro, u totally should review classic RE2, I'm dying 2 hear your thoughts on that game, btw that review of ODT wuz awesome, 1 of my favorite games from my childhood, keep coming with these retro reviews, they're awesome 👍👍
It’s incredible that they’re still some modern made games for the Genesis. Just by their work alone shows that how much they grew up playing the 16-bit console, and this is their way of showing the love for the system.
@@st1ka I seem to recall a mega drive game set in Ancient Greece. It was a RPG, or an adventure game. Can't remember the name of the title. EDIT: Ellenica was the name of the title, but it doesn't look much progress was made in it.
I keep coming back to this video and continue to enjoy it. I finally got into both Metal Dragon and the Beggar Prince and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with both. For Metal Dragon, I'm glad I waited. When it was initially released my expectations were through the roof and it's certainly nothing special but I still found it fun and satisfying. I wish it had some extra boss fights or maybe a vehicle stage or two or you have to control a turret and fight in a gallery shooting style or maybe one level where you don't just walk to the end and maybe have to find a couple of keys. So again, it's okay but really feels like one or two little extra touches would have gone a long way. I'm only a few hours into the Beggar Prince but it's a surprisingly fun story with some simple mechanics. Again, nothing extraordinary (and both the music and graphics could be better) but a fun little game. I'm curious to see if I think the fun continues or if it becomes repetitive or I just simply get tired of the story. We'll see. I think my updated new Genesis games list would go Xeno Crisis, Demons of Asteborg, Ultracore, Tanzer, Darius, Brave Battle Saga, Metal Dragon, Water Margin, Beggar Prince, Jim Power, Generals of the Yang Family then Switchblade with all of the first 10 games being fun and the last two being duds.
Eyra was funnily enough my favorite on this video because of the main character. If only she got a collect-a-thon 3D platformer on the N64 or PS1 at some point, then we’d really be reliving the days of the mid- to late-90’s.
There is an FPS on the Genesis/Mega Drive called Bloodshot, remember playing that a bit when Sega Channel was around. There is another called Zero Tolerance and a few more but I can't remember them. Really wish someone would make a game like Shining Force though, would love that.
As someone who's had a love hate (though mostly love) relationship with Jim Powers, I was pretty impressed with the Mega Drive port, as well as the NES style demake that came with the GOG/Steam game. The soundtrack wasn't quite as good as the original Amiga or the SNES versions but is still amazing considering the console it's on and the Mega Drive's fart noise legacy, and the gameplay itself is still that wonderful blend of "this is fun" and "this makes me hate life itself". I also have to say that I REALLY need to get my hands on Tanzer, I actually love the euro computer look of the graphics, and that gameplay? Looks amazing!
Yeah, I interviewed Jim Powers' composer, Chris Huelsbeck and he basically said that the sega soundtrack wasn't finished. So what we got in an incomplete version of the soundtrack.
@@st1ka That's still pretty damn impressive, all things considered. It doesn't shock me too much though, I remember there was a leaked copy of what was to be the Mega Drive port, Jim Power: The Arcade Game, and while it was mostly completed, there was like one song used for the whole game.
The thing is, the Ghouls n' Ghosts game is a hack of the existing version whereas Sunset Riders is a new port built from the ground up. This is why I didn't include Ghouls n' ghosts :)
@@st1ka edited my comment, I own Paprium and enjoy it, pre-ordered it when they first opened up preorders, I didn't complain, and held out hope, and a while later it came.
Mostly to keep the video manageable. Even with all these rules the video was still an hour long. If I counted every project this would be well over 6 hours
45:34 I'm a Genesis boy but i think Xeno Crisis fits the "hardcore gaming"-style of Genesis but the controller that fits perfectly with this game is the SNES controller.
30:57 I can't understand why Capcom haven't sued the authors of this game, as it used a lot of stolen content from Capcom. Back in the day, it was a bootleg, but now you can officially buy it... (Fixed the timestamp)
I pretty much agree with your assessment although I would have put Demons of Asteborg a little higher and I would also have included Old Towers as it's a pretty decent puzzle game. Tanzer I would have marked down slightly, it is a great game but it's so hard that it might put some people off. I went to buy The Cursed Knight recently but it was out of stock, hopefully this is just a temporary issue.
@@Overlord81 The Evercade version is arguably easier because it supports save states, I own both versions of the game and I struggle to get very far with the Megadrive one .
@@absinthe4breakfast299 Yeah but I barely use them. Basically you must know where are the secrets with the big cash, so you can buy more abilities and became way more powerful. If you don't even the save states are not gonna help.
Mad Stalker may not be a very good game, but its soundtrack is stellar. From the entire list, my favorites are Mad Stalker, Xeno Crisis, Tanzer and Demons of Asteborg. I would like to get my hands on Tanglewood and Ultracore as well.
Foxy Land and Debtor are PSCD games (the folks behind the Rezident Evil de-make) that saw commercial release, but weren't featured in this video. also the Commndos port that got a Russian release i believe (i have it, but forget who made it) wasn't mentioned. some Russian original MD games from a couple of years ago are pretty good.
Commandos and the Russian games were only released in Russia though, that's why I didn't include them. The bootleg games I included here all got modern, worldwide re-releases.
@@st1ka Yes, according to Pyron the most recent progress has been in the phase bosses. Here are the first two: ua-cam.com/video/-MzUn9YKbAk/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/uBTF2UfTWIM/v-deo.html
Also thank you for this list,, ive been looking for good new RPG's in the old 16 bit style, bo, and Brave Battle Saga looks so good! as does Affinity Saga!! Any other recommendations for good bootlegs or third party rpgs in this style?
Astebros launched a few months after making this video. It's basically more of a roguelike metroidvania but I really enjoyed it. If you want full turn-based RPG though, sadly, I can't think of any right now.
Growin up my cousin had a Sega with Sega channel...so I played a LOT of sega games in my day.. my all time favorite tho, is a game called OASIS and i've NEVER seen anyone talk about it... it's a banger
I'm so confused. What's the difference between a Sega Genesis and a Megadrive? Is Megadrive just the Japanese name for Genesis? Or is the Megadrive like the original NES, and the Genesis is like the upgraded SNES? Anyone??? Thanks.
Sega Genesis is the American/Canadian name. Mega Drive is the name of the console in the rest of the world. I use use them interchangeably because I have audiences from everywhere in the world
@@st1ka Ah! Thank you for the explanation. One last question, was there an 8 bit Sega system similar to the NES before the Genesis? Lastly, I love the content and presentation of your videos. They're always so indepth, informative, and entertaining. Thanks for your hard work!
@stalkerstomper3304 glad you liked the video :D Yes, Sega had an 8 bit console called "Master System" the system did well in Europe and South America but flopped hard in Japan and the US. As a result most of its best games are exclusive to Europe and South America. The system was generally more powerful than the NES, but the sound was worse.
I'd be interested in it, but I have two major problems. The first is that I have very few modern game boy games. The other is that the games I DO own... aren't very good imo >_>
Water Margin is easily one of the better games in this video. It's actually a VERY competent side scrolling beat em up! The one & only flaw I really have with it is the character's attacks don't have very many frames & look a bit jerky because of it. I wish they had more frames to the attacks but that's really just a small nitpick. It's a really excellent & fun game with some pretty good music too!
It's a little different, because Another World is a cinematic platformer. Tanglewood is more of a puzzle platformer like Limbo or Fez. They're close, but still not quite the same.

Actually in Tanzer you must keep those orbs "alive" if you want the good ending: I think those orbs have kidnapped people inside and you must keep them(they're basically jump blocker you're not supposed to jump on them)...otherwise the ending will be like "Ok you win but there is no one alive to see that"
ooooh! thank you! so I've been doing the oposite of what I should be doing haha.
Didn't Super Fighter Team release two more Mega Drive games? Legend of Wukong and Star Odyssey, I think.
Yeah, I missed Legend of Wukong, my bad.
Star Odyssey I didn't count because I don't consider it a limited release. It's the same reason why I didn't include the re-release of Megaman Willy Wars or Mega Turrican.
Stupid dumb shooters in the top? Bad top.
Am I the only one who's more excited about new releases for old consoles than new releases of modern games?
You're not the only one 😉
Nope. The video was pretty harsh on the games. Too harsh for my taste.
Nope! You aren't!
Me too ! New games to big and too much time investment needed !
New consoles suck. Why would you be alone?
Great review! I have two suggestions for next videos (maybe about other platforms?)
1) Always mention the year of the release, as this makes a lot of difference.
@@amerikaOnFire makes sense. I'll see if I can do something similar for my videos in the future
@amerikaOnFire thing is no actual man is watching another man that uses the word shmup you shmuck
Thank you! I try! ^^
Oh that version is great. I didn't include it because there's no way to buy physical ^^
Water Margin immediately had my attention by being (presumably) based on one of the all time great Wuxia novels. I'm always surprised that more Wuxia stories have yet to be adapted to video games, so much potential!
You’d be surprised, there are quite a few Chinese games based on domestic novels
There was a TV show based on the Water Margin when I was a kid, it was awesome.
I admit I don't know much about Wuxia novels, but all I can say is that Water Margin is amazing! :P
Glad that Tanzer is getting the recognition it deserves. Amazing game and amazing soundtrack!
Oh I've been a huge fan of Tanzer since it came out. Such a fun game
Always enjoy your stuff. I had a hard time with Switchblade locking up on me - although I only tried it on an Analogue Mega SG and not official hardware. Love Xeno Crisis and Tanglewood, personally speaking
yeah, I had similar issued with Switchblade. Supposedly they issued a new version, but it was too late for me :\
_Man._
_Tanglewood._
I knew I loved this game dearly.
Honestly even I have trouble keeping up with all the releases. I'm sure I missed a few
Tanglewood just looks so... Bare ? To me so I have avoided it. Maybe I should check it out.
I recommend you check out the Asteborg, spin-off, Astebros! :D
Been looking forward to watching this since I saw on Twitter you were working on it. This will be a good one to wind down with at the end of the night. Thanks for reviewing these.
Any time! Hope you'll enjoy it ^^
To bad your channel sucks
Great video! In my opinion, Pulseman has the best voice acting on the console. A TV news host and a radio buddy both get the job done! There is also some football games with commentary, but I haven't played them.
You can use those rocks of Edessot to attack flying monsters (we actually added that to balance things out at the start of the game), and almost all magic attacks and many stronger normal attacks work on them too. Yeah, I should have written an NPC with some directions where Alina went, sorry about that! Next game won't have this problem for sure!
No worries man, thank you for the tip xD
Yes omega blast is crazy good :)
ah, I know about that game and it's super fun. I honestly didn't include it because I wanted games that would have felt like full releases. But that is a quality release :P
Great video! I just finished playing Water Margin and had a blast, I also am playing The RPG Brave Battle Saga and really like it so far.😄👍
Yep those are surprisingly good bootleg games
Awesome games!
Is Metal Dragon using Sega Master System Music or something? That clip you had sounded more like Dragon Crystal than anything on Genesis lol
Excellent video. This is one I really wanted to see! I have many of these games and it was great to hear your thoughts on them. My top two favorites from these games would be Paprium and Tanglewood.
Thank you! Glad you liked it! :D
Just WOW!! I honestly hadn't heard of the most of these. Anyway, I'm already looking up copies of Darius and Tanzer (I already picked up Xeno Crisis on Neo Geo CD, so I can give that a miss). Cheers St1ka!!
Hope you'll enjoy them! :D
Thanks, I didn't know "Canon : Legend of the new gods", and "Water Margin" looks nice as well. I just hope one day that someone (maybe me with SGDK ?) will make a game like Crusader of Centy / Oasis, we have too many platformers on Megadrive.
Yeah, I'd like to see more RPGs and adventure games too.
I would love to do a story of thor (beyond oasis) like game but it looks like a very hard task
Oh man, I'd love to see a new game like that on the mega drive.
*_D&D_* has such a large community, that frankly I'm _SHOCKED_ that nobody has done a romhack OR homebrew of *_Dungeons & Dragons - Warriors of the Eternal Sun._*
...Controversial opinion here, but *_D&D WOTES_* is absolutely amazing, imo !!! ...And frankly, since we were cheated out of a great *_Star Trek_* game and they just gave us mediocre titles instead, I think a *_Star Trek_* themed romhack of *_WOTES_* would be awesome !!!
2. Male Human / Female Augment
3. Male Android / Female Borg.
4. Male Ferengi / Female Changling (both Rogue-like).
5. Male Klingon / Female Andorian (both Fighters).
6. Vulcan
7. Male Denobulan / Female Trill (both Scientists & Medics).
8. Male Cardassian / Female Bajoran
9. Male Nausicaan / Female Caitian
10. Male Gorn / Female Orion
11. Male Xindi Reptilian / Female Xindi Insectoid.
Jeez, I cheated hard on that list to fit in extra species... Here's a non-cheated list:
1. Human
2. Android
3. Ferengi
4. Klingon
5. Andorian
6. Aenar
7. Vulcan
8. Betazoid
9. Changling
10. Borg
Altho, my four party members would probably Android, Klingon, & Andorian to overpower everything with a Ferengi Rogue to haggle, pick locks, disable traps, & steal stuff :P
L'Abbaye des Morts is my favorite one here by a mile. Its amazing how great that game is. Just wish it was longer. A lot longer.
yeah, understandable. I really like the game, but I also know this style of platformer is a niche interest.
The backwards parallax scrolling in Jim Power makes it hard to look at. Why have they made the background layers go in the opposite direction? Gives me a headache.
yeah it's an odd decision. I feel the scrolling is even worse on the SNES in that regard, but yeah it takes some time to get used to it.
@@st1kaThe reason was that it was to allow the 3D effect gimmick that the game had going on to work. The SNES version came with 3D glasses to facilitate this... not to say the effect was very GOOD mind you...
So much aftermarket games! Thanks for the list!!!
Tanglewood may be my favorite. Slow paced, thrilling, great score, ... love it!
Tanglewood is a great game, but it's also very love it or hate it xD
Been waiting for this video and it didn’t disappoint. Thanks my G
glad you enjoyed it! :D
Arkagi’s Revolution is so awesome, and I’m so hype for Arkagi’s Escape as he seems to be experimenting with a 3d first person perspective this time, and I love 3d on 16 bit consoles. I’m happy more people are positive on it
Oh yeah I wanna get Arkagis escape when it's out
I still play Zero Tolerance on my Megadrive to this day. I too love it when it's done well. Ecks Vs Server 1 on GBA is also one of my faves.
Even on the 64 bit Jaguar 3d graphics has too low resolution and frame rate. Why would 16 bit be any fun today?
36:50 what's up with Jim Power's parallax scrolling ??
They get it right on the intro screen, then it's backwards during the game ??
Yeah it's definitely weird and it gets even weirder in the snes version for some reason lol
I do have Generals of the Yang Family, Canon: Legend of the new Gods, Water Margin, Tanglewood and The cursed Knight and hope to get
Pier Solar, Life on Mars: Genesis, Brave Battle Saga - Legend of the Magic Warrior, Demons of Asteborg, Ultracore and Paprium. I'd like Fx Unit Yuki but heard it only works on Model 1 Genesis's and I only got a Model 2
I backed Affinity Sorrow and The Black Jewel Reborn when the Kickstarters were on.
The Genesis is my fave system and i had some good times with it so new games on it in this distant future year of the 2020s (When Robotech II The Sentinels happened) is quite grande.
Glad I could help! ^_^
Ah I didn't include cave story because as far as I know, it was never officially sold
@@st1ka That's fair enough. Shame as there are a some newer completely free games that deserve to be on a list like this. I think Devwill Too Prologue, Insane Pain and Fight for Vengeance were sold or at least had Kick Starters though.
Your BEST video so far
thank you! :D
I haven't tried Tanglewood but it looks like it plays a little similarly to Pocahontas. Is it like that? Or is it more action based and less puzzle solving?
I think it plays more like first levels of lion king but with a pocahontas level design indeed
Ah Tanglewood is entirely puzzle based.
L'Abbaye des Morts looks SWEET! I love these sorts of platformers that are more styled like Jet Set Willy, Montezuma's Revenge and the first two Pitfall games where it's more about avoiding obstacles and moving from screen to screen non-linearly looking for something than any more "modern" (modern here meaning made after 1985...)
Definitely going to try it out. Thank you for bringing it to my attention St1ka!
Anytime! Glad I could help! :D
A new version of "Sunset Riders" was indeed necessary. I don't know if it becomes the definitive 16bit version, but I'm sure when finished it's much better than the flawed standard MD port...
I like the official port of Sunset Riders, but yeah, it could have been SO much better.
@@st1ka so far, it looks good, not as good like the arcade original of course, but still much better than the official MD version!
@@st1ka your're right, the old Megadrive Sunset Riders is not a bad game (altrough it's to hard for the wrong reasons imo), but it's inferior compared to the arcade and SNES versions. The new arranged MD version helps out for sure!
yep agreed!
It wasn't intuitive at all, and I could have just as easily missed it.
aaah interesting! That would explain a lot.
Your channel has great content, mate, keep it up ! Subbed !
Thank you! I try! ^^
Yes!!! This is going to be excellent. Thank you St1ka!

Yeah, for all the faults with its creator, Paprium is a super impressive game.
Yep very true. I'm hoping we'll start seeing more metroidvanias, rpgs and action rpgs though
How do you debug disassembled spaghetti code?
17:59 *_Canon - The Legend of the New Gods_* looks pretty fvcking _SWEET_ !!! TY !!!
ooo, 21:36 *_Pier Solar_* + 37:37 *_Barver Battle Saga_* both look pretty sweet as well, I _LOVE_ *_RPGs_* :P
Btw, what's the game with the flying Griffon looking-thing at 0:03 seconds ? ooo, it's *_Demons of Asteborg_* at 38:52 !!!
...I was able to download most of the games in the video, but I cannot find a demo of the *_ZPF_* Shoot'em-Up :(
Great video St1ka.
And yeah, Legend of Wukong deserves to be forgotten.
that's fair :)
You might not be too familiar with the source material, as you are Portuguese, but there's an ongoing project to do a port of Street Chaves to the Mega Drive
Oh, I can't say I'm familiar with them
All those vertical stripes on the Duke3D game make me wonder - NTSC artifact colors maybe? I.e. would this actually look pretty on a NTSC TV, generating more colors than the thing can normally handle?
i've recently discovered this niche, but i honestly dont understand it why develop games with so many restrictions... is it for challenge?
Well, it's cool to see new game for old systems and it also makes the games feel more authentic. The issue with a lot of indie games that mimic retro games is that they often do things the original consoles couldn't and sometimes it breaks the immersion
@@st1ka true, i agree.
do you know if its harder to dev for old systems? because i kinda feel like a challenge
@@mugen8studios Yeah, most devs say it's quite challenging. Though thankfully, modern tools help a little bit.
Yeah, I wish Paprium were easier to get, because as it is, it's a travesty that people can't get it:\
Nice collection of games that you’ve shown here in regards to mad stalker in terms of the music I definitely prefer the sharp X68000 version.
I played a lot of the games on this video, and it's fantastic how, since the advent of the SGDK, it's easier to make a Mega Drive game, but kudos to the guys before that time that were able to do something for our beloved 16-bit machine.
oh I get that the game isn't perfect, but I still enjoyed it for what it was ^^
@@st1ka The funny thing about brave battle saga...
Whoa, I had no idea this was a thing. I knew the Dreamcast had some new games, but the Megadeive getting new life warms my heart.
Yep it's a thing and there's been more releases since making this video :D
Finally, was looking for your video for so long 🎉
glad I could help
Oh yeah, I LOVE Ultracore. Such a great game.
Ultracore is an unreleased from 90's but such a fantastic game !
Did you have a copy of Paprium?
Yep I do.
There exists even a SNES version of "Eyra - The Crow Maiden", at least I saw a short comparison between MD and SNES (so it could be still in progress), but it seems to be the same like the MD version, just a little more colorful and with slightly different sound.
Is the SNES version of Eyra out yet? I think it's still in development which is why I didn't bring it up
@@st1ka like I said, I don't know if it's finished now, I think what I saw a few months ago was just a demo! I have to look for it now, it would be interesting to know...
ah understandable ^^
@Dean Satan this game doesn't relies on cpu speed. It's 1:1 the same (also the AI and speed, alone the horizontal resolution is lower. 4 times faster? 3,58 is 25% of 7.6? That's new for me, but thanks for the math.
@Dean Satan aaha...
Great video as always. Tanzer is top of my list but I've not played Paprium yet. As far as Xeno Crisis goes I'd recommend anyone wanting to play the mega drive version to get an Evercade as the controls on that are perfect and were done by bitmap themselves.
Thank you! Yeah, Tanzer is amazing! :D
great video, thank you for showcasing so many games! :-)
glad you liked it! ^^
Where can you find these games? Some of them I would love to play.
Yo bro, u totally should review classic RE2, I'm dying 2 hear your thoughts on that game, btw that review of ODT wuz awesome, 1 of my favorite games from my childhood, keep coming with these retro reviews, they're awesome 👍👍
thank you! I honestly haven't played Re2 in SO long. I need to try it again.
@@st1ka I can't wait my friend 👍✊
It’s incredible that they’re still some modern made games for the Genesis. Just by their work alone shows that how much they grew up playing the 16-bit console, and this is their way of showing the love for the system.
Indeed, it's such a great system! I just hope we see more RPGS and adventure games.
@@st1ka me too even I am interested in what they’re capable of doing with this old system.
@@Mankey619 agreed 100%
@@st1ka I seem to recall a mega drive game set in Ancient Greece. It was a RPG, or an adventure game. Can't remember the name of the title. EDIT: Ellenica was the name of the title, but it doesn't look much progress was made in it.
Ah yes, I didn't mention Elenica in my video because it looked very early and rough.
Nice selection, the musics of Tanzer are awesome!
Oh yeah, the Tanzer soundtrack is awesome!
We'll see.
I think my updated new Genesis games list would go Xeno Crisis, Demons of Asteborg, Ultracore, Tanzer, Darius, Brave Battle Saga, Metal Dragon, Water Margin, Beggar Prince, Jim Power, Generals of the Yang Family then Switchblade with all of the first 10 games being fun and the last two being duds.
aww thank you! glad you liked the video
Eyra was funnily enough my favorite on this video because of the main character. If only she got a collect-a-thon 3D platformer on the N64 or PS1 at some point, then we’d really be reliving the days of the mid- to late-90’s.
Hah, that's fair. I do prefer the NES version though xD
Devwill Too have a sequel, why you didn't include it?
There is an FPS on the Genesis/Mega Drive called Bloodshot, remember playing that a bit when Sega Channel was around. There is another called Zero Tolerance and a few more but I can't remember them.
Really wish someone would make a game like Shining Force though, would love that.
Yep, I feel those FPS games are alright
Nice video just subscribed 👍
thank you! :D
@@RagnarokB Yep, this Piko release is basically another unfinished beta of the game that was futher along in development
Nice video! But I think you forgot the port of Ghouls n Ghost (remake, like Sunset ryders).
The thing is, the Ghouls n' Ghosts game is a hack of the existing version whereas Sunset Riders is a new port built from the ground up. This is why I didn't include Ghouls n' ghosts :)
The Mega Drive version I also feel works much better on the Evercade as well given its button layout.
Is there a compilation of modern games? Like nointro, goodroms, tosec?
Not that I know of
@@st1ka uff, Long-term conservation will be complicated.
3:34 actually the original Duke nukem 3D did have a crosshair by simply pressing the i key during gameplay.
I own Paprium, i quite enjoy it.
Whoops I appreciate the correction ^^
@@st1ka edited my comment, I own Paprium and enjoy it, pre-ordered it when they first opened up preorders, I didn't complain, and held out hope, and a while later it came.
I dont understand why smaller projects won't be counted?? Did they not do small projects back in the day?
Mostly to keep the video manageable. Even with all these rules the video was still an hour long. If I counted every project this would be well over 6 hours
great list and video!
thank you! ^^
They're probably not even aware of it.
I have Tanzer for the MegaCat Evercade...love it It's hard but not frustrating.
We have all the parts but PCBs to make more TCK games. The issue should be fixed very soon
Being hard =\= being bad
Incredible list of games here!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@st1ka My teenage years were 16-bit era. Still my favorite gaming generation by far.
The 16-bit generation was my childhood so I love it xD
Mad Stalker may not be a very good game, but its soundtrack is stellar.
From the entire list, my favorites are Mad Stalker, Xeno Crisis, Tanzer and Demons of Asteborg. I would like to get my hands on Tanglewood and Ultracore as well.
Good choices ^^
Great video mate
Thanks my dude 😎
Foxy Land and Debtor are PSCD games (the folks behind the Rezident Evil de-make) that saw commercial release, but weren't featured in this video.
also the Commndos port that got a Russian release i believe (i have it, but forget who made it) wasn't mentioned.
some Russian original MD games from a couple of years ago are pretty good.
Commandos and the Russian games were only released in Russia though, that's why I didn't include them. The bootleg games I included here all got modern, worldwide re-releases.
One you missed unless it doesn't fit your criteria is the port of Bitmap Bros. Magic Pockets from Pixel Heart.
Also Stone Protectors lol.
Whoops! It's hard to keep up with these!
I think that saying St1ka likes to say things are an understatement, would be an understatement.
Are you understating my understatement? :P
@@st1ka that would be an understatement!
Paprium did have a kickstarter for a digital version a few years ago
Yep, but the delivery date is overdue.
F man!!! I was not aware this was happenning, at all!!!! Thank you!
glad I could help! :D
Arkagis Revolution looks pretty nice. I need to get Paprium and Darius too
yeah those are pretty great games.
i might be wrong but i think that life on mars game has assets "Borrowed" from aliens: infestation (play this one if you can, real hidden gem)
Interesting, it's definitely possible
Great idea for a video,You should consider ranking after market nes games??!!
I think it's a good idea, but a lot of them are hard to find now, meaning I don't have them :\
Great compilation video! Maybe there should be a port of Shinobi (arcade), which is being made by Thrypon...
Has there been any progress on that? I feell like there hasn't been much progress on that game?
@@st1ka Yes, according to Pyron the most recent progress has been in the phase bosses. Here are the first two: ua-cam.com/video/-MzUn9YKbAk/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/uBTF2UfTWIM/v-deo.html
@rarchangelo oh damn! That's cool!
@@st1ka Well thank you for the reply!!!
Growin up my cousin had a Sega with Sega channel...so I played a LOT of sega games in my day.. my all time favorite tho, is a game called OASIS and i've NEVER seen anyone talk about it... it's a banger
Bio Evil looks so dope. Can’t wait to chop that one up and smoke it!
haha
24:16 There was already an older game that looks a lot like this one - it's Granada by Wolfteam. Try this one if you dig top-down shooters.
Ah I've played Granada. I enjoyed the game, though I know some people love it
Seu canal tem uma qualidade impecável, muito bom mesmo!
Great video, thanks!
glad you liked it! :D
@stalkerstomper3304 glad you liked the video :D
Yes, Sega had an 8 bit console called "Master System" the system did well in Europe and South America but flopped hard in Japan and the US.
As a result most of its best games are exclusive to Europe and South America. The system was generally more powerful than the NES, but the sound was worse.
I think the Genesis port of Cave Story is my favorite port of the game. It just fits the aesthetic so well. I'm surprised it didn't get a mention.
Oh! Saw that someone else mentioned it, and I saw your answer. Anyway, great video!
thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! ^^
If only we could buy a legitimate copy of Cave Story for the Mega Drive :\
@@st1ka I know...
would u do dis on the gb and gbc? there are tons of new games still being made for those retro consoles
I'd be interested in it, but I have two major problems. The first is that I have very few modern game boy games.
The other is that the games I DO own... aren't very good imo >_>
@@st1ka oof welp. theres always digital releases, but i believe retro games are best played iin their native consoles
I'll have to search high and low for a lot of those games. But we'll see.
@@st1ka itch io gameboys tags can lead to unique titles for a start
I have the original duke nukem 3d on PC and it has crosshairs, you can turn them on or off.
If i hadnt owned an evercade, i wouldnt have known these games existed.
yeah, a lot of them are on the evercade.
Lots of new games I wasn't aware of, neat!
glad I could help! :D
Indeed, the game is really good and I would easily play it over many official Sega Genesis beat'em ups like Growl or Double Dragon 3
A very cool Video and List of the Games😃Beggar Prince was the Game I knew🙂
glad you enjoyed the video ^^
@@st1ka Why not🙂You did a good job man😃
@@FarmerSlideJoeBob haha thank you. I try
33:57 - What about Another World?
It's a little different, because Another World is a cinematic platformer. Tanglewood is more of a puzzle platformer like Limbo or Fez. They're close, but still not quite the same.
