  • A walkthrough of my set of Nikon AIS & E series primes, and some thoughts on shooting on older glass compared to newer electronic selections. These lenses have treated me so well, I looked into pulling the trigger on Canon FD's as well as Contax Zeiss, but these lenses were the perfect balance of price & quality. Looking forward to filling out the set more and modifying more of the lenses on the way.

    These "vintage" lenses are a lot simpler to disassemble and clean yourself to remove the fungus and haze, than the (much) later AF lens types. There are many videos showing how to do so--for the exact model of your lenses. I just finished cleaning my Nikkor 50mm f1.2 AiS lens (technically it became an AiP), which also has the dandelion cpu chip with electrical contacts, so that it will communicate with the Nikons that have electronics built in--anything from the late 80's on. It is now fungus/haze free and quite sharp, even wide open.

    CLA these old vintage lenses, its pretty simple and straight forward. The internal dust, fungus and off gassing from lubricants seriously impact subject isolation/3D pop and diminish sharpness just as much, esp wide open. I use Series E lenses as well, very unique look to them that cant be duplicated. Incredible footage btw!

    The Ai and Ais lenses have slightly better coatings than the E series lenses but only slightly but still very good lenses and are going up in price. Another Nikon Nikkor alternative is the pre Ai which some have a, Ai conversion on them but this doesn't really matter if you've adapting them. The ones with the letter C ( 50mm f2 auto HC for example) are multi coated without the C they are single coated.

      Hey Man! Thank you so much, I shot that on a BMPCC4K and the Sigma 18-35 / Viltrox Speedbooster combo. Great footage. Based on few videos i watched, i understood that if we have a Nikon AI or AIS lens mounted via a speedbooster (like Viltrox NF-M43X) to the Panasonic GH5, we will be able to read the aperture change in the viewfinder. Can you confirm this? Thanks for your help!!!

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 роки тому

      Hey there! You actually won't be able to since the Nikon glass you're talking about are manual lenses, you can only see the aperture changes on the lens itself, not through the viewfinder, since the lens and camera don't communicate to each other. I wonder if you're thinking about ai or ais lenses on the older Nikon 35mm SLR's? I have a Nikon FM and through the viewfinder on that camera I can read the aperture settings on my AIS lenses when mounted to it!

    What an underrated channel! Love this video and the information you put out, as a fellow Pocket 4k + Viltrox user, I have some questions.
    Which brand of Nikon F - EF adapter did you use?
    Stacking it to the Viltrox Speedbooster, does your infinity focus land perfectly on the infinity mark on the lens?
    Have you found any other issues using it with a Viltrox + Pocket ?
    Thank you

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 роки тому +1

      Hey brother thank you so much for the kind words! I use Fotodiox F - EF mount adapters on my lenses. I've found that infinity focus works completely fine except there was a certain time when my Viltrox mount was missing a screw and was pulling away from the body of the speedbooster when it was mounted to a camera and when a lens was mounted to the viltrox, therefore it was being pulled from both ends and I wasn't able to hit infinity focus because the speedbooster real element was being pulled further away from the camera sensor. Nothing a little super glue fixed when I glued down the mount of the viltrox to the body to keep it from pulling away from each other! Sometimes on the Pocket the IRIS control doesn't work, it doesn't happen often but it's a simple lens reattachment to get it back in working order.
