The Problem With Modern Cars... [ft. E86 Z4 Coupe]

  • To me, car manufacturers have lost their way in the current time. Drivers' cars is a topic area I have brought into many of the videos on the channel, for it is one of great importance to us enthusiasts. The modern day line-up of cars seemingly lacks drivers' cars more than ever before. The combination of changes in consumer demands but also changes in manufacturer strategy, has led to a plethora of technological showcase vehicles, few of which appear to offer the driver engagement of some of the older stuff.
    In this video, we look at where I think they have it wrong.

    Great report. I bought a Z4 2.5i in 2005. Sold it two years later for a 993 Porsche ten years old. Very different cars but both huge fun. Just bought a 20 year old Z4 3.0i with 40k kms on clock with one lady owner for on new always garaged. I love it. Again. And your assessment of the modern auto industry is spot on. Nice cars but too clinical and not for people who enjoy the drive.

    I've had my E86 coupe for 4 years and it's never cost me a penny, never gone wrong, honestly only oil and filters which i do myself it's dead reliable and does 44mpg on a motorway, that's filling up driving few hundred miles and filling back up and doing the maths, even fast driving it's still brill on fuel, not like my Rx8 before that was 26mpg maximum on motorway 15- 18 round town and 7mpg when driving flat out like you stole it.
    I love my bmw z4 coupe manual 09 plate late registration 97k brilliant car 100% standard sounds like your at brands hatch when your booting it my mates say when I'm on a Bluetooth phone call. Won't be selling her future classic no doubt, My mate had a z4M and i drove it and we both said the normal coupe feels way quicker in normal driving due to the low down torque of the N52 engine, so in the Z4M unless you are high up in the revs all the time in every gear like on a race track this is when it's fast, it honestly feels slower in normal road driving and the suspension is hideously hard and high road tax and insurance.

      That's great to hear Craig, awesome to see your enthusiasm.
      I agree with everything you're saying there, and although I've not yet driven an M, it is exactly what I hear everytime. Yes the S54 is special but to live with, the N52 seems to be the better engine. There is masses of low down torque and at no point do I think my car is "slow". It'll monster pretty much any b road you throw at it.
      Indeed a future classic!

      Wait 44 mpgs in US figures? I thought maybe that was UK but the the RX-8 numbers seemed like they might be US. I still kinda want to take the RX-8 plunge... with the end game of the cliche LS up front... they sell some great kits to make that happen! Like my Miata on steriods!

      I have to admit ,44 mpg on the motorway from a Z4 coupe it's just crazy. I think even 40 mpg on the motorway it's more than expected . Can you really achieve that ?

      @@Marius0189 I bought my first Z4 Coupe 2007 last week and drove it back - 140m on A roads and Motorway. I stuck to the speed limit and was gobsmacked at 42.7mpg for the journey. Mine doesn't have cruise control either! It has dropped since i have been home and only doing short journeys and a lot of start / stop / accelerating but I am still at 37mpg!

    I highly support your view on cars,and i am sure a lot of people do. We are living in a fake society,and fake cars are just a product of it,with their synthetic sounds,useless leds and screens.
    People need appearance,not substance or quality and this is what we get.
    I hope an increasing number of people will understand that and stick on to older cars

    • @FootToPedal

      Thanks Alex - the car industry is indeed shifting in a direction I'm not massively fond of, but atleast there are still plenty of older alternatives out there. Yeah I traded a few cars and ended up with a Z4M roadster manual, and s SLK 55 AMG, they are both around the 350hp mark, same size, similar weight, but completely different experiences, but the one thing they both have in common, is that you are driving them, not them you. You sit in them, not on them, and you feel connected in some way with them, and the sound! And I also have a M135i.... thanks for your views on the joys you can have just driving. Excellent video mate, a topic I've been mulling over myself for several years. As a fellow e86 owner you were totally right about the balance of the car and although mine is an automatic the manual mode still gives me some of that engagement with the engine.
    The ever increasing size and weight of cars has directly reduced the feel and soul of the cars themselves. The new G29 is a powerful car but feels big, cumbersome and disconnected. I took a lightly track tuned S1 Elise round a track and it was the most thrilling, enjoyable and raw experience I have had with a car, nothing these days comes even remotely close to that experience.

      Couldn't agree with your comments more - I drove a G29 in 2020 and although it felt very good, it feels totally different to my E86, largely down to the huge amount of additional weight it carries, and of course a turbocharged engine.
      Stay tuned for plenty more!

      I do agree cars these days are bland, on many fronts, and not least the styling. There was a period a few years ago where distinguishing between different BMW models was much harder than it should be.
      The E86 isn't dull imo, actually think it's a great looking car and very different to much of the BMW range of the time so its pretty distinctive. The Z4s have always retained that actually.

    Coming from a Westfield with an S2000 engine and box in it to an E86 , I find the E86 pretty heavy and cumbersome by comparison. So, for those going from an E86 to a more modern machine would find the same weight difference as well. If you think the 330i E46 is only 100kg heavier, I would want to know where the kerb weight is in a Z4 ? I found the kerb weight is 1325kg for the Zed. Which is about right. Lighter cars are great for off the line on smooth tarmac, but the can be more unpredictable on typical english roads. the extra weight of the Zed does give more stability at speed also. The Zed isnt a rocketship in anyway, but the way the straight six does pull from low down and the sound does make it an enjoyable experience to drive and own. Mine is out of hibernation in 3 weeks time . And looking forward to it.

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah you make some very good points there Justin. Just like with power, I think there is a sweet spot too. Some mass is good to retain control and of course provide traction. I find anything from the sort of 900kg to 1400kg generally is best, not too heavy so still feels nimble and relatively lightweight, but carries enough mass to stay composed over undulations and not be thrown all over the place! But yeah, pair the Z4 with the N52 straight six and it's a great combo to me! Hope you enjoy getting yours out of hibernation!

    Great video, I’m very much in alignment with your views. For BMW it doesn’t get better than an NA straight six… and the days of the ultimate driving machine, I fear, have largely been and gone.
    My E39 Touring is powered by the previous gen M54B30… it’s a brilliant lump with great character, she always puts a smile on my face and makes me feel like the car is an extension of me… I’m connected to the road. By contrast, these new BMWs filter out the driving experience with technological gimmicks, and small turbocharged engines with an anaemic amount of cylinders and a ghastly exhaust note as an accompaniment.
    Here’s a question - what did people say 10 or 20 years ago about ‘modern’ cars back then? :)

      The M54 is another brilliant engine. Yeah sadly the pressures from regulators and a changing world are particularly damaging in the drivetrain environment. And all these exhausts constantly popping and banging as a means of "sounding good" becomes a bit tiresome too.
      On your final point, yes you're absolutely right! Although, electric cars are what is going to dominate the future, and sadly I'll never connect to those cars like I do the ones from years gone by 👍

    I just virtually swapped my Pug 208 2016 1.2l 82 BHP for a slightly less practical but totally immaculate 2006 2.5i SE Z4 with only 34,000 miles on the clock, hence the hefty price tag! It drives really well almost like a new car, I could have brought another 1-year-old Pug 208 and drove it for another 5 years and to be fair to the Pug it got, me, my wife and daughter all over the country and always gave a safe and reasonably powerful drive on the motorways, up Scottish and Welsh mountains with the power to overtake on motorways. But as you say it was just a car that virtually drove itself without giving even the slightest worry that it would not perform its duty without any feedback to the contrary. Some would argue that that is what cars should do and I agree to a certain extent, but I wanted to go back to the days when a car gave you some feedback that maybe you are pushing it too much and gives a sense of the road in a way that drivers of modern cars who have never driven anything else just would not be able to understand. Thankfully my wife has the family car Citreon C3 so I can enjoy my new ultimate driving machine as they call it ;)

      Yeah I fully agree - sadly cars these days are used as "clout" more often than not, simply a status symbol. Clearly to many of us they're much more than that, and while I can appreciate other people appreciating the cars I own, to me it's about how they are to drive. Sometimes even the more "standard" cars like the Peugeot 208 you had can bring that enjoyment, and things really crank up another notch with cars like the E86 etc.

    It's really incredible how cheap E86 Coupes still are in the UK, esp manuals. In the USA, very high mileage auto E86 starts at $15k USD and manual E86 starts at $18k+ USD. With a bit of easy weight reduction (there are a ton of heavy speaker/sub components, and the OEM wheels and seats are extremely heavy), it becomes a competent track weapon rivaling the (now) big money Honda s2000.

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah always shocks me how much prices can differ, the cheapest E86s here are around $10k USD and the most expensive (non M versions) are about $25k USD, with the autos usually being a couple of grand cheaper for an equivalent spec car. But yeah, it is a very impressive platform for sure. Either way, I'm sure prices will only go up from here!

    There's been almost nothing offered on the new car market since around the mid-2000's that's really appealed me. I tend to categorize cars as pre drive-by-wire and post drive-by-wire. The DBW demarcation is notable not only for the disconnect between car and driver that DBW itself brings, but also for many other things that show up around the introduction of DBW on a timeline of car development. Some in direct conjunction with DBW (traction control, etc.), others not at all (infotainment systems, etc.).
    Others that are more hard core than myself who are looking for the purist driving experience possible would likely point to the degradation of steering over the years as their own demarcation. Some might prefer a manual steering rack, while plenty of others prefer hydraulic over electric when it comes to steering assist. I personally prefer naturally aspirated engines over forced induction. However, I can understand the draw of forced induction for some, particularly for those who place a premium on straight line performance. And while high power to weight ratios can overcome some of the deficiencies of a heavier car, you can only take things so far.
    At its essence, I view a driver's car as one that maximizes the interaction between the car and the driver, often above all else. Certain levels of performance and handling are expected of course, as is a good balance between these things. But at the heart of things, a driver's car in my mind is all about enjoying the full interaction between man and machine. Basically, if a car doesn't have all three pedals, then I don't view it as a driver's car. There are plenty of impressive cars today featuring automatic transmissions, offering amazing levels of performance, but again I don't see them as driver's cars. Instead I view them as performance cars. Drivers drawn to these cars are willing to sacrifice some level of interaction with the car to realize higher levels of performance being offered (something of particular value to those who using their cars out on the track).

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  2 роки тому +1

      Interesting to hear your thoughts on this!
      Yes there is absolutely a clear distinction these days between performance cars and drivers cars. I think it's often the case that manufacturers intend to build drivers cars, but build something instead that is purely focused on statistics. Ultimately there's a lot more to driving than that, which is what I was trying to emphasise in this video.
      And its often the case these days, that the high end performance cars with tonnes of power, AWD and automatic gearboxes don't really command much of the driver, so are they drivers cars? Potentially not.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @VirtualGuth
      @VirtualGuth 2 роки тому +2

      @@FootToPedal Thanks for the response. Obviously I'm fairly pointed in my views, but I should also note that I don't consider mine to be a negative view one way or the other. I don't feel that it's a putdown to refer to a car as a performance car rather than a driver's car or vice versa.
      I noted some of my own ideals in my previous comment, but ultimately every car choice involves compromises of some sort. I've owned a few cars that I really enjoyed driving. For the past five years I've been enjoying my Honda S2000. (This has nothing to do with rising values, I didn't buy the car as an investment.). Plenty of people have noted that the steering could be better. I wouldn't disagree, but I'm okay with it and love most everything else the car brings to the table - especially as I'm a big
      roadster fan. I'm well aware that the S2000 isn't everyone's cup of tea, but then no car is.
      At the end of the day, when it comes to choosing a car for anything more than to serve as basic transportation, it's really important to understand your own preferences (or at least knowing what makes you happy within your budget). That you genuinely enjoy spending time driving your car is proof enough that you made a great choice.

    I’ve recently bought a mk2 tt 3.2vr manual, not the best sports car of the era by a long way but needed something for the misses to daily. Your US pen pal here, lol. You listed some good cars... as for too much power or too heavy (and having only driven things up to about 260hp maybe I can't speak to this), but my feeling is above 500hp and/or crossing the 4000lb (US) mark seems like it would make things either too fast and/or too cumbersome... As for modern classics, another one that came to mind might be the Cadillac CT4-V (even the lower trims should be fun), which come close to touching both those figures I listed... Still sold with a manual and based on the reviews still very engaging and analog to drive. I eagerly anticipate seeing what (and where) the Mazda 6 goes when they go longitudinal I6... I would love to see a RWD manual option... I'd be tempted to own one if my Miata speaks to what level of engagement it might have. I think I recall reading it would likely also be a 48V mild hybrid that would boost power a bit, but I think it will be NA (I was wrong). If they can keep the weight down and get close enough to 300hp it should make a very fun, yet very street-able car! Cheers and best wishes! edit: corrections below...
