Red widows are now probably the #1 spider I want to see in the U.S., they are such a fascinating species and I love that Florida has its own endemic widow, because of course it does. Those shots of the widow capturing the grasshopper were awesome, I would love to see that for myself one day. Great work, I really enjoyed the style and structure of this video.

Don't get bit by these. They can cause a nasty rheumatic syndrome. One of the peptides in its venom is a rather long acting immune checkpoint inhibitor. Might be useful as a anticancer medicine though.

I watched your friend get bit unprompted and then this one tried to bite your pine needle. I think I’ll keep my distance. Never had a spider try to bite me and scorpions rarely go for stings. But that red widow seems like it’s best observed from a distance.
There’s always a reason for defensive behavior in spiders. Spencer’s spider was gravid which can easily make these animals quicker to bite in defense. This spider of course as you saw, had just taken down a sizable grasshopper and was likely still “excited” from that predation event and that’s why she felt more comfortable biting to defend her web. The spiders always let us know how far we can go, and we do our best to listen carefully.
They have a volatile venom composition that can cause lasting and possibly permanent effects! Definitely one of the worst proper bites you could receive.

Why does everybody keep claiming they're rare and only found in Florida? We've had them in Louisiana for years, and they aren't rare. I see them all the time. And no, they are not red house spiders. They are red widow spiders. You don't have to go find a specidic biome to find them. They are common here.
