  • In 1895 a 22 year old Florence Kate Upton found a random doll int he attic of of her aunt's attic. It was a battered doll in blackface that eventually led to her children's book "The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and the GolliWog. This children book would become a popular hit.
A Black doll with black hair, red lips white eyes and appears like many images that you see with it relates to blackface.
The toy was everywhere and spread like wildfire across the UK.
In 1903, James Robertsons and sons, known in the UK for their preservatives saw the Golliwog and incorporated the image into their own brand. This branding continued up until 2001 when the company died, however the image of the Golliwog was still continued.
You may be asking yourself, how ia this relevant and how does it affect me today?
    Great queation.
In 1915, Johnny Gruelle tool inspiration for a new doll that he was creating that was partially inspired by Fred Stone who was a blackface star, but mostly inspired by golliwog dolls. Every single one. The Raggedy Ann that you owned may have been the biggest tie-in to golliwogs than you think.

Not for the reasons you think. They banned them because they thought it would encourage aryan children to have feelings of affection towards black people.

I never heard of a Golliwog until I met my British GF and her family introduced them to me jokingly. Her Mom played with one as a kid and she’s in her early 40’s. I considered them more British then American but I never knew the story had its roots in the good old US of A. I’ve always seen raggedy Ann dolls but not once have a scene a Golliwag

The Origins and History of Golliwogs began during the British occupation of Egypt in the late 1800's, Egyptian workers wore the letters W.O.G.S signifying that they were Working On Government Service. These labourers were nicknamed Ghuls (the Arabic word for Desert Ghost) by the British Troops.

Based on Jam. The famous Robertson's Golliwog symbol (not seen as racially charged at the time) appeared in 1910 after a trip to the USA to set up a plant in Boston. His son John bought a golliwog doll there. For some reason this started to appear first on their price lists and was then adopted as their trade mark

There is a chocolate brand in Germany named "Sarotti". Their official logo, a "moor" (an offensive caricature of an African man posing as a servant who presents the product) was created in 1918 and remained basically unchanged until *2004*. Just one of many examples, and it shows you that it's not just an American phenomenon. And people continue telling me that I am too sensitive when I voice my resentment over things like these. What do you think? Should I not be offended?

The blackface imagery definitely had a appearance outside the US and in non English speaking countries. Just look at Japan's Dakko-chan toy in the 60s and their mascot for Calpis, both of which weren't removed until the late 80s. I think with Japan tho they didn't realise they were racist because they had little knowledge of stuff like minstrel shows and other western media. They most likely saw stuff like that, but they didn't know the context of it

Racism is the normal condition of anthropology, America did what it needed to succeed in the antropological framework of civilisations. Racism dictates that your civilization, and your people takes priority over jungle monkeys or any foreign parties, and this is a fundamental tenet for success

I have 2 golliwogs. I love them very much, but I don't view them as 'racist.' I do see the bad side of them, but where the golliwog started was in Egypt. Little children in Egypt played with black stuffed dolls called 'Ghuliwogs' cause the word 'ghul' in Egyptian means 'Ghost' or 'Ghoul'. Egypt then decided to sail them off to the UK, and thats where things began with the 'Golliwogg', soon later, it was changed to 'Golly' cause of the word 'wog'; the racial slur in the UK towards black people. I've grown up with them and the books, and aswell as dolls, but I can see where its 'racist' on the appearence of the blackface, teaching little children about racist meanings and stereotypes of black people.

2:19 This doll is almost identical to those of the famous character in the song "Negrita cucurumbe" ". And the other dolls look like the character of another famous song. "" Un Negrito bailarín"" the difference is that the dolls of these characters do not lift any kind of controversy.
