A BASTION is a projecting part of a fortification built at an angle to the line of a wall so as to allow defensive fire in several directions. The bastions in Sri Lanka had a role in defending the port of Galle from being conquered.
Arab traders came here for spices and Galle an ancient port became a popular destination for maritime trade. Thus the influence of Islam and mosques along coastal towns. Some of these traders later settled in marrying locals.
Gabs, Rumassala (mini mountain you had to descend to reach Jungle Beach) holds a connection to the legendary Ramayana tale. As per folklore, the entirety of Rumassala Mountain was carried and inadvertently dropped by Lord Hanuman from the Himalayas. This occurred when Rama dispatched Hanuman on a quest to find a medicinal herb. Unsure which plant to select, Hanuman chose to bring the entire mountain instead.
