I guess Petreaus decided to resign before he was dishonorably discharged(?) The history books would have stated something far worse than resigning. Ending a career by his choosing might mean that some people won't question his motives, thinking he wanted to retire. He should not be allowed to take military retirement pay.
I am a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant (1972-1993). For a former four star general, and a reputedly very intelligent educated man, he showed remarkably poor judgement regarding his personal life and his handling of classified data. If an enlisted man or less then star rank officer had done what he did, then that individual would have been severely punished, to include possible jail time. There should NOT be a double standard for generals versus everyone else in the military as there was very clearly here. He keeps trying to re-surface in Washington but I for one would be VERY reluctant to hire him for ANY high level job given his past poor judgement and, to put it bluntly, his lack of "zipper" control. He should just consider himself lucky that he was not court martialed and simply and quietly fade away instead of constantly reminding those of us who DID act professionally for their entire military career, and didn't do such things, that he largely got away with his misdeed. Others, not of his rank, who do the same thing are not allowed to get away with it. When it comes to military justice there should be ONE standard for every military Soldier. If anyone should have known better he should have! Also what is the point, and deterrent value, of posted severe punishments for mishandling classified data if they are not enforced by DOD?
He was our division commander during the invasion of Iraq (101st ABN). He was a great general with many accomplishments. Everybody makes mistakes. Stop ragging on him, or else I'll have to give you a counseling statement.
The USA is terrorist nation #1 in the world today. The level of willful ignorance and shameless apathy is mind-boggling. Moreover, there is so much misinformation and disinformation put out by the corporate media. However, in the age of the internet, ignorance is a choice. I admire this general all the way. His COIN-Manual is one of the basics for modern warfare. His personal shortcommings outlines: he is a human beeing.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
mhs vz: This isn't about sin, its about acting professionally. If you have not been in the military I would not expect you to understand that.
Apparently some folks don't understand what happened here. To find out what happened see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petraeus_scandal
