I disagree - I find echos of my own Hindu religion in some of what Eckhart has said. Of course, any number of people can find fault with my way of thinking, too, but it has helped me understand myself and others along with many other benefits.

This is not a secret or a desire to dupe anyone.

In my experience, working with western mental health practitioners trained in "evidence-based" modalities has not induced actual change in behaviors, emotional patterns. It did make my wallet lighter. "Power of Now" by Tolle did serve as such a catalyst; it moved the heart. It just did, for far less money. And don't criticize people for making money when you're selling shirts, knick-knacks, pushing podcasts, and asking for patreon.

His quality has nosedived and I have no respect left for him any more. P.S. I have not even watched this video - came straight to the comments as I like Tolle and have noticed Grande's spiel getting less and less intelligent over the last year. I am very critical of what I see, hear & read.
    I have read & watched Eckhart's books & videos,
& while I look at the man & listen to him,
he seam to be the most unlikely candidate, for a guru.
Yet, while I find him to be awkward at public interaction,
I do not find him to be pretentious.
    He comes across as sincere,
trying to explain that to which many cannot grasp.
How do you explain "color" to a blind person?
You state that all he's doing is taking things that have already existed in other religions.
He openly says this, & is quick to quote & attribute the credit to all the wise masters, & enlightened people who have come before them.
He doesn't claim that what he says is new, or that he is the only source. A very humble individual.
He is simply a voice for this generation, to help spout that which is difficult for many to wrap there heads around,
just as so many other great thinkers, humanists, or religious icons, have done for previous generations.
There will be others in the future,
each speaking in words that will bring the same lessons home to another generation.
    He is not unique,
just special in that he focused on sharing the concepts of who & what we really are.

First step is to realise the voice in your head, the silent subtle cues, the storys of your past and future resentments, your reactions to your social interactions. Just go for a walk and try to think about absoloutly nothing. Put attention on your 5 senses, seeing, hearing, smelling feeling. you will find yourself running in to narratives in your mind as there is no presence power established. Yes you have become aware your living in your head 85% of the time.

Just to clarify Eckhart doesn't for a second say its important to give up trying, thinking or building. He makes a very clear distinction that accepting what is does not mean you don't take action to remedy the situation. Its an internal acceptance he's referring to, it doesn't mean you remain docile. I respect people who commented they found help and comfort from Elkhart Tolle’s books. I think the problem that can arise is when a person needs medical care or deeper psychological care beyond these books. Not everyone is the same, nor do they have same difficulties. What works for one person won’t work for another. Eckhart’s books are not much help for me. I felt confused years ago as to why people found them so helpful when i didn’t. I grew up in a highly abusive, narcissistic family so I needed to learn about narcissism. Reading about how it effected me, freed me from negative thoughts and helped me feel at peace. I don’t ruminate much anymore. I live far more in the present than ever before. I am more at peace with myself and others. I am more accepting of others and the challenges of life. I could never have gotten to this place with Elkhart’s books alone. Different person, different path. I had a profound dream years ago that I was traveling in a car and arrived at a city. I looked around and saw hundreds of people arriving at the same city from many different roads and directions. I was told that we all arrive here from different paths. Like the spokes of a wheel. I respect others saying his books helped them. He seems to have gathered wisdom from sources from past philosophers and presented it in a book that helps people in our present time. But, it isn’t for everyone. Some people need more. Or they have a different path to arrive to a similar place of peace.

when I first picked up one of his books I read 2 pages and said - this is so boring! I felt he wasn't saying anything really meaningful, and I had done a fair amount of study and practice on spiritual concepts, even studied with several martial arts Grandmasters. I can tell you the Grandmasters were clearly not fake, they proved their abilities in surprising ways.
Anyway there was some similarities with other spiritual teachers so I was not a novice. Tolle's book was not winning me over as a fan, and I was aware he was considered a very enlightened person in that field. But then over time I had occasions to see things he said or talks he gave, or read things and I started to warm up to him. I'm very skeptical and I have high standards when it comes to spiritual advice from anyone claiming to be a master. And over time I came to really appreciate him as I saw he had the awareness and insight of someone who truly knows the deeper teachings of the spiritual realities which have been taught down through the ages.
At this point I give him a thumbs up for his insights and teachings. I think there are many people who can benefit from his teachings. I personally am working in a different organization which has deep roots in ancient Taoist practices. But I find there are a lot if similarities. And that is one way I judge things because I feel the ancient traditions are the real deal, so if other teachings have similar concepts then I deem them to be useful as well. Thank you!

I found his lectures after having gone through some very tough times and noticed that he had some very good practical advice how to deal with depression and anxiety. He had developed similar viewpoints that I had also developed to get through bad times. There are far worse and more damaging spiritual gurus than Eckhart,. I found Tolle’s books very enlightening when I read them years ago. I took from them the lessons I needed, and left the rest behind.
These days, I recognize the spiritual bypassing in many of his messages, and have moved on from his philosophies. However, during the worst days of the pandemic, I found the online message he delivered to be very comforting and sincere.
Sometimes, people experience terrible things and their nervous systems need calming. I don’t think it’s so wrong to seek some comfort in the moment, to help recharge before dealing with difficult things, as long as those difficulties are eventually dealt with.
Oprah has helped to accelerate the careers of some awful people, including a cult leader who traumatized the lives of many who followed him (thanks to her). The worst part is that she never acknowledged or apologized for it once his wrongdoings became public knowledge. She’s who I’m really disappointed in.
Your tone in this review sounds much more mean spirited and judgmental than those you’ve reviewed who’ve committed awful murders! Dr Grande you are a very intelligent and highly educated man. However you have missed the mark entirely about Eckhart. There are times in life that sometimes we become completely broken and cannot find our way out of the despair, even with the best therapy and drugs available. Until a person falls into this abyss one cannot understand what Eckhart is saying. To the uninitiated it is just mumbo jumbo jibyrish. Eckhart also once thought that the power of the intellect would provide the answers. Until he reached the abyss and discovered there is much much more to it than the thinking mind. If you only understand what you can see, touch, taste, hear and smell then you may be limiting your choices. Start with Dr Michael Newton, Dr Brian Weiss, Dr Wayne Dyer, Edgar Cayce, Robert Schwartz, and throw in a Delores Cannon. Dr Eban Alexander has a tale for you too. Eckhart Tolle has never called himself a guru. Labeling him as such, reveals a disposition towards bias and a rush to judgement without careful research. Eckhart has devoted his life to teaching millions of people around the world this: to be in the present moment, to abide in a place of stillness and, to find relief from the never-ending mental noise. This is something new agers seem to keep saying: if you disagree with their gurus, you just don't understand them. The truth is that he gurus are entertainers who phrase obvious and old ideas in an appealing way, which makes the ideas more likely to stick in people's heads. Aaron is pretty much a commentator and an author, not a guru. He is helpful for some people, but he's only describing unoriginal ideas in what people think is appealing. This can be the beginning of healing or coping through a situation like a pandemic. Maybe Tolle just gets the ball rolling for some.

When I see Tolle in his videos, he blinks too much, but TOO much, and I’m a very emphatic person, his blinks triggers inside me lot of anxiety just watching him. And I’m at peace when I stop watching him. I think at this point Mr. Tolle is trying to maintain that identity of wise and calm person because he does that for living.

Eckhart's books try to help people become aware of that in themselves to help reduce the suffering in their life. If it's not your cup of tea, then don't get his books. Problem solved. She had suffered paranoid schizophrenia her whole life which, if you know that terrible disease and its effect on family members, you can imagine I was in terrible pain. I have to say that Tolle's wisdom was a lifeline to me at that moment. That it is not about logic; that truth exists outside of religion and may even resemble some or all religions. It's why America seem unable to actually separate church and state. Members of religious groups do not believe that morality arises spontaneously in human beings. In the past I noticed a really hard time getting myself to do the things on the list. While in the float tank after about a half an hour I started to notice my thoughts and how I had a self separate from my self or the self I would try to get to do the lists I would make. I had all of these goals and accomplishments I was seeking. And I started to notice how these two selves were separate. Like why would I have a self or an awareness that was trying so hard to get my self to do things. Shouldn’t it be easy? I started to dissect this separation and the effort involved in trying to get myself to achieve these goals I had. I started to notice more peace in my life and that allot of things miraculous started happening in my life with less effort.
Like instead of chasing dreams goals or desires things were coming to me instead with less effort.

When he refers to dying before you die, it's not a physical death he's referring to in the first part. He's referring to the things that are part of our identity, that are attached to who we're "supposed to be", what others think of us, the opinion of anyone but God,... Those things bring us suffering. If we can let go of those attachments, allow them to die (an Ego death, essentially), that's where we can start finding some peace. We're conditioned to believe that we're separate from everything, but really, the part of us that can't physically die, is part of everything. To feel that connection, there's nothing else like it.
I don't believe everything that Eckart talks about, I'm not into New Age stuff. But a lot of the things I've read from him is wisdom that has come to me during my darkest moments, when I didn't feel I could go on.
Edited to say that I do believe we need our Egos, but that we've allowed them to be in charge, when our Ego is meant to be a servant to our minds. In Chinese Medicine, our heart is our mind, and it's where we're connected to everything. So when talking about an Ego "death", it's really just putting our Ego in its proper place.

I felt Grande’s seething bitter sarcasm and insulting over simplification of ego death/ dissolution to be really immature and to be frank I felt he was doing ALOT of projection. And what that projection revealed (in conjunction with his videos becoming increasingly more bitter under the guise of entertaining or witty humor) is that he is envious of those (especially men it appears) that find wealth and success and are regarded as insightful and helpful. I got the distinctive elementary male ego here at play mocking Tolle’s ego dissolution and corresponding bliss states before receiving more insights and then eventually belong more book writing and eventually seminars. He called him a con man and mocked his wealth all while ironically and hypocritically having no less than three ads in the span of less than 15 mins, while I’ve listened to HOURS of Tolle’s compassionate and calming responses to viewers questions without ONE AD. So really one must ask themselves who is truly 💰 money driven. Tolle is very low maintenance and understated, mild mannered and humble.
This blatant projection just quite frankly pissed me off and I’ve been slowly becoming more put off and uncomfortable with what Grande has been revealing about himself though his increasingly more sarcastic videos and this one just really vastly increased and solidified that growing distaste.
Sad to see an otherwise talented man who could help a lot of people, be overcome with ego 💩 jealousy/envyand competitive bias and unfair analysis due to status and wealth. It’s so ironic that everything Grande was in fact mocking, he was being perfect case study for!!

He even went homeless for a long time after having the enlightenment because he surrendered to the present completely, and later on Re-established his work life balance after people started to ask him questions about he's peaceful state and later on became a teacher so it worked for him perfectly at the end to stay as an example and a reminder that our social conditioning is making us unhappy, but that we can still achieve and manifest things when we balance our sense of beingness with intention,
but that you shouldn't loose yourself in the doing, he specializes more in the being part because that's what he preaches the most and is what he implanted in he's new identity, he is completely identified with the conscious state that made him rewire feel more peaceful, and it works great for him.

So from your comment, I agree, when some of us don"t know how to stop the pain and suffering we tend to go to the last resource, which is none other than spiritual (accept, surrender and ask). So yeah, reading material like the one Tolle offers makes you feel comfort, and we all know is that once calm and peace comes, we can finally begin to understand, assimilate and act. The key here is, the spiritual process and realizations have to be personal, and for a better life. When you start thinking that you can teach and help others save themselves, that is when those constructs collapse. Anyway, anything I learn that I label spiritual, is for me, it helps me understand how to relate better with the outside world, and that comes from understanding myself better.

I believe that many people are living lives of "destinations" & "regrets"... instead of truly appreciating each moment that they are alive. I see this as a "Fundamental Truth". * not hocus pocus. If you don't understand what Mr. Tolle is saying, explaining it by being purposely vague only to make money is in fact admitting that your ego is defending itself. You must relate to his sufferings to understand any of what he speaks about. He was the first person to ever be able to put words to how I was feeling… when you feel what he’s felt, everything he says makes total sense and you dont even perceive his words as vague most of the time because you know exactly what he’s talking about. It seems vague to those who haven't experienced it. Tolle constantly encourages people to be still in mind and body. To simply be. To meditate. This isn't laziness. He's not saying live every minute sitting still doing nothing. He is saying sit still, be still, be aware and present in the now... because if you do that, and keep doing that, you eventually connect with higher consciousness. You can only understand what that is and what that means by experiencing it yourself. Love Dr Grande's videos, but he's out of his depth here.

I’ve tried the mindfulness thing….It’s another method of escape. Much like certain drugs. And our minds exist for a great purpose that exists whether we understand it or not. I won’t give it up for temporary comfort.

    • @NatureFreak1127
      @NatureFreak1127 Рік тому +2

Mindfulness practice is about being here now and perceiving what is going on in your mind and senses. If you're in pain then it's about feeling it fully, surrendering till all the pain, thoughts and sensations naturally run their course. Because most of the time when something hurts us we create secondary suffering by our "monkey mind" running wild. We analyze the problem for the millionth time, ruminating, stuck in loops of thoughts, often also fighting our feelings or not wanting to admit how we really feel to others or even ourselves. It's about pain being unavoidable, but suffering being optional. Also, it has nothing to do about not caring about things, in fact when you eliminate the needless suffering, you can care even more (in a more productive way).
Where did you come across the information that it's about convincing yourself that nothing matters? Is it Tolle's interpretation?

Absolutely, but that and the quality of being "mindful" are two different things.

This is what happens when a person who is wired one way, (in Grande’s, case very much left brain, logic oriented) tries to analyze someone who is wired another way ( in ET’s case, very much right brained and intuitive.) There’s really no way to get an accurate picture of the other's message. To the former (Grande), the latter (Tolle) looks strange and weird and doesn’t make any sense. I find Eckhart Tolle’s (by the way he pronounces it TALL-ee) teachings to be quite helpful often times, as do many others. They also make intuitive sense to me b/c I operate from an intuitive place in addition to a logical place. I do not find Mr. Tolle's position to be that of a know-it-all guru who claims that he knows the truth. I am able to run what he says through my own filter and use it (or not). This is the same way I take Dr. Grande's positions...sometimes it resonates, sometimes it does not. In this case, what Dr. Grande says does not resonate at all. I can see why Grande doesn't find that Tolle's view fits his points of view, but that doesn't mean he has a corner on the Truth about Tolle's messages. I truly find it odd that you find his teachings jumbled. He is gifted at showing the unifying message in all of the great religions. The way he teaches the Bible in particular is gorgeous. He does not refer to himself as a guru but a teacher of presence. He showed me the voice in my head is not me. I am the witness of the voice. He taught me that I had a dense pain-body I and learned to observe my anger and sadness until it mostly dissolved in the light of presence. This is great gift to my family. I owe a lot to dear Ekhart.
I think it can be frightening and threatening to hear that the thinking mind is not the end all be all. Thinking is a tool to be used and then put away. Instead we obsess and have destructive thoughts that make us insane and make us act destructively. Einstein knew how to access the higher intelligence that is between two thoughts.
Also, the reason we have no control in life is because we do not choose our thoughts. It’s not like we go to the thought store and pick and choose what we want to think. Every thought you have is not chosen by you therefore you are not in control of your life. There is a lot of evidence mounting that our behavior manifests and we rationalize it by thought AFTER it happens.

I think the quotes might seem vague and ambiguous, to anyone who is trying to experience the world, or rather, what is, with their intellect and their senses only. Through the practice of meditation you can get to experience the profundity of what he is actually trying to convey. However, I only saw a few of his videos so I can't speak to his integrity, but I recognize his teachings as being the same as those of buddhism. It just comes in a different package, which can be very useful, since different approaches fit different people. If the goal is the same, the path doesn't matter, as long as it leads the right way.

Thank you for this video. I'd never heard of Tolle until an associate of mine got all excited about his show coming to my nearest capitol city. Being the natural sceptic that I am, I decided to 'enlighten' myself and do some research on him. Seems that my hunch was correct and he's just another self proclaimed spiritual teacher. If you follow his teachings and they have helped you, that's great but do your research before believing his words are absolute.
As his teachings appear to be based on many other beliefs and religions, he reminds me of Gilderoy Lockhart from Harry Potter. Gilderoy tracked down accomplished magic users. After erasing their memories, he took credit for their achievements. He became famous by writing printed works about his "exploits", gaining awards along with invitations for book signings.
Tolle is lucky that many of those he has offended (and I can assure you he has offended people), do not believe in getting revenge, getting angry or even launching legal action, although I personally believe that the after life will not be so forgiving.

I agree with his teachings. Not because I didn’t want to not be the one who could not figure out the meaning of life. His teaching’s genuinely helped me be a better mother and worker. Just to accept and be at peace with many things in the world that I could not possibly change. To be in a constant state of angst because you want things that you cannot change is not good for a person nor does it change reality. Elkhart does encourage changing what one can. But if one is not willing to do what they need to they cannot complain about it because it’s not helpful. It’s like the serenity prayer. And I think it’s ok to use older concepts and phrase them in ways that speak to many people of current time. People used what was learned from the past to grow. It’s in our nature and I don’t think we have to highlight that he isn’t completely original because in truth no one really is.

While I too find teachings of gurus etc to be sometimes frustratingly vague, there is within psychology the field of transpersonal psychology that does attempt to put some structure around what might be termed as spiritual experiences. The conclusions reached ... are very similar to those of the contemplative traditions of most religions and those of spiritual teachers like Eckhart.
Teachers like Eckhart Tolle, in my view, are just trying to spread awareness of the felt / subjective experience that fields like transpersonal psychology investigate perhaps a bit more objectively and less subjectively.
There seems to be (on a first and casual watching) a lot of judgement in this video (while talking about concepts in psychology like trying to avoid being judgemental) ... which shows how easy it is to fall prey to judgement. I'd argue that the concepts that Eckhart and others talk about are very similar to concepts to be found in positive and transpersonal psychology.
So I don't really see the point of all the fuss.
People can, at the end of the day, take what they wish from teachers and leave what they think doesn't work for them. That's probably what being an adult is all about (discernment).
And in-fact ... a lot of these teachers tend to ask their "students" repeatedly that they make up their own minds. I've seen videos of Eckhart where he says the same.
