My Mum bought me "Little Women" when I was 10 years old, sadly Mum died when I was 13, I still have the book 68 years later though it is almost falling to pieces now. I love this story. In days gone by 'Good Wives" was a separate book which I also loved though I cried my heart out when Beth died. I often wonder which other books my Mum would have chosen for me. Happy Christmas to you and your Mum. love your videos

I am the eldest of four sisters. We used to play Little Women. I insisted on being Jo, with my sisters playing the other roles. Poor Karen was Beth and spent the majority of our playtime in bed sick. Thank you for sharing this lovely book.

I’m a woman in my 40’s and I’m reading Little Women for the very first time right now. I’m only a few chapters in so far. But I am just loving it! I’ve been writing down so many wonderful little sayings and quotes and beautifully written descriptions. Wow! What a treasure I know I will be returning to many times again in my life. This book club discussion is helping me understand some context and insight as a new reader. Thank you Miranda and Donna!

Little Women is such a comfort read and film watch. Although I also enjoy the subsequent versions, my favourite film version is all the way back to the 1949 version with Mary Astor (Marmee), Janet Leigh (Meg), June Allyson (Jo), Margaret O'Brien (a wonderfully touching Beth) and Elizabeth Taylor (the ultimate Amy). What a cast. I'm going to see if I can find it now to stream. Happy Christmas Miranda and Donna. Can't wait for the cosy reads in 2024!

Little Women is the most impactful book of my childhood. My aunt gave me my first edition as a child and it got me hooked for life - not only on this particular narrative but on literature in general. Whenever I am in the states, I go on a pilgrimage to Orchard House and it is always wonderful. Thank you for your lovely discussion, Miranda!!! 😍😍

As an American girl in the 1960s/1970s, there was only ever one sister for me and that was Jo! I bitterly disliked Amy. On a recent re-read I felt a lot more patience for Amy but will be a Jo until my dying day haha! Very interesting that Donna resonated with Marmee this time around - I think as a new grandmother I may also feel pulled toward her on my next read. I loved the Greta Gerwig film, I never thought a modern film would beat my favorite with June Allyson, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Lawford but I think it’s now my new favorite. I have a lovely memory of seeing the Gerwig film with my son (now a married Dad) in the theater when he was home visiting from college. Surprisingly for me, he became absolutely transfixed with the film and the story of Little Women, as a boy he had never read it before. Of course he read the book right after and enjoyed it. I love that the film introduced him to what traditionally appealed more to girls.

I can remember best the very first time I read Little Women. I was probably about 7 or 8, and while I’ve read it numerous times again since, the first reading remains my favorite. Losing Beth broke my little heart. I believe it was the first time I was moved to tears reading a book. It’s old hat now, I cry easily, but that was the first time I remember being so moved by reading. I don’t remember identifying with one sister more than the other but I didn’t care for Amy either😊. And was so disappointed in Laurie.😂 Merry Christmas to you both and to all CBC members. I wish you all the best in the coming new year. 💕

Hello Miranda and Donna, I really loved this month's Comfort Book Club selection, Little Women. I have watched all the movie versions but never read the book till now. What a treat! Such a heartwarming, lovely story perfect for this time of year. Once I finished the book, I actually felt like I missed the characters as if they were part of my family! Will be reading Jo's Boys and December's Commonplace book over the holidays to keep in the spirit. Wishing you both a wonderful Christmas and all the best for the upcoming year. I purchased my first copy of Little Women when I was ten with birthday money I’d received from my grandmother. My mom was with me & questioned my choice a bit…I’m sure she would have rather I spend it on new underwear! But I was determined & have had that original copy for 62 years now! Though I used to daydream of having 4 daughters, I was blessed with 4 sons but have made it a mission in life to make sure sisters. granddaughters, nieces, cousins, & daughters of good friends all receive a copy by the time they’re ten! It’s a heart-warming & heart-tugging story that needs to be shared. Have a lovely holiday season, Miranda & Donna, & thank you for all the generous consideration you have put in your videos this passed year! An American fan! 📚🎄📚

I was hesitant to read Little Women when it was first suggested, because I felt that I knew the story so well through the film versions. However, I did read it, and I'm so glad I did. There are many wonderful passages, details, and depths to the story and characters that I have missed by just watching the films. So, thank you for the encouragement I needed and as always, for the book club discussion. Enjoy your break! I will look forward to seeing you back in January:)

i'm the youngest of 3 sisters and a younger brother... I used to, like you say, identify with different aspects of each sister. But now that I'm older (in my 50s and no longer married) I realize how much I am like Beth. Almost as if I tried to be Jo, Meg or Amy even, most of my life, now that I'm living out in the country side, at peace I can look back and see how much I have always been Beth. During this latest reading of the book Little Women (not The Good Wives yet), I annotated, highlighting in pink all of Beth's moments in the book.. it will be interesting to go back and just read only those passages!
I love this book club thanks so much for having it! You and your mum, are the best 🙂

What a lovely discussion of a favorite novel! I enjoyed this reread the most as I found the smallness of the March sisters' world cozy and reassuring this time instead of restricting amd limited as I had in the past. Alarming yet interesting anecdote- my daughter used to babysit for a family with three daughters, and Little Women was on the banned (🙄) list of books allowed to read be to them. They felt the roles in the book were too traditional, and they didn't want their daughters exposed to such backward ideas. My daughter was devastated because Little Women is her favorite book, and she really wanted to share her love of the book with these girls. I remember thinking at the time that so many classics must be on the naughty list in that home. Such a shame, and really when you think about it Little Women is a fairly feminist book considering the time in which it was written. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2024, Miranda and Donna! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into the CBC 📚

As a child I thought I was most similar to Jo as she liked to walk outdoors, didn’t fuss about her appearance, loved books and was strong in her own opinions, but I loved Beth’s garden the best with its sweet smelling old fashioned flowers, so thought I would like her as a friend. As an adult, I noticed how the garden plots described in the book represented the characters of each girl. 😊

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Father challenges them to combat their “bosom enemies”. It reveals how well he knows his little women . As a pastor, he charges them to better understand themselves, and therefore us, and grow beyond.

I related to Meg most as a girl and still do, but now that I have adult children I of course pay closest attention to Marmee. I gravitate toward watching Little Women in May (American Mother's Day) because so few films feature faithful, strong mothers and devoted families.

Love your book club, Miranda and Donna! Really enjoyed re-reading Little Women. Funny, when I read this aloud to my children when they were younger, they loved Professor Bhauer, and they still say he's one of their favourite characters. Perhaps it was because he is funny and endearing, and perhaps, too, because I have a German heritage I could read him with the appropriate accent ;). Also, with regard to your comment on Louisa May Alcott having to marry off Jo in the second book - I'm sure it would have been fine to end with her single or married, but we would have missed out on Little Men and Jo's Boys if she hadn't married (back then). Sometimes editors make good decisions that benefit future readers. (I know this type of thing also happened with L.M. Montgomery and Robert Louis Stevenson. I wonder how many books and movies we enjoy so much now would have been missed out on if it weren't for editor and director choices? Just a thought)

You got me to finally, at 64!, read Little Women. Actually, I listened because I ran out of time. Unfortunately, I didn’t care much for the particular audio version I had, so I do want to read the book, which I did purchase. I think I will get more out of it. I didn’t find it very engaging, until I got about a third of the way in, then it got more interesting to me - when the girls got older. I actually liked the father, even though he came in very late. I could feel the love he had for the girls. Thanks again!

I love both of the last two films (I have not yet seen the one with Elizabeth Taylor - I keep meaning to!) but my heart is with the Winona Ryder version. I hope my message was not too sad! - I was a little bit worried after I sent it - but I also had the same thoughts as Donna about the birds and what/who different birds symbolized throughout the book. I also felt that Mr. Lawrence was so much better drawn than any of the other male characters- it was almost the subject of my voice message, so I had to laugh when you mentioned it! I hope you have a lovely Christmas holiday and Happy New Year! See you next year!🐦

Little Women is my favorite book of EVERY book I have ever read. I re-read it every 2/3 yrs. I think I was 12 when I first read it. Yet I remember when I was in 3rd grade organizing the neighborhood kids to putting on the play in my family's garage. So there is some confusion for me regarding when I first read it. I of course was Jo. I have identified with No my whole life. I WANTED to be just like her; independent, A writer, not the typical, conventional woman. I was very much a tomboy. I grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, went to a private h.s. in Concord, Mass. There was a rural little town between the two. I frequented Alcott's house(Orchard House) soooo many times. Even as an adult I would go back and back. I think I could have given the tours. Emerson paid for the Alcott's to live there. Her father was a very lazy man who felt he shouldn't have to work! He did NOT support for his family. Louisa, sisters and Marmee lived in poverty. Her father was a very weak male and I think that is why she wrote the male characters in the book the way she did. I also think that is why she had no desire to marry. I have so many books, biographies, and journals of L.M.Alcott. In real life after all in her family died, she took care of her father and moved them both to Boston (she would live there a few times as an adult). They died one day apart, Louisa the last. I collect copies of Little Women. Alcott's health was never the same after she got sick as a nurse in the Civil War and had to go home to Concord. Modern day medicine believes she had Lupus. So do I! Such a remarkable women who started writing to financially support her family. She is buried in Concord in the cemetary Sleepy Hollow. There is a section called " Author's Ridge". She, I think Emerson and one other famous author from that time period(name escapes me at the moment) are buried next to each other. I have photos of Orchard House. I will make copies and send one to you and your Mom. It may take me awhile because after Christmas they are remodeling my entire apt. building (yr. long project) starting with my floor, the top one. I move out Jan.15 to a hotel for 6/7 days. Everything is already chaotic, Christmas is NOT the best time to start this!!! I promise I will do that. This was wonderful, thank you! 🤗🤗

I also am one of four sisters and our personalities were very similar to the four March sisters. I remember that my older sister got Little Women for Christmas and she was such a fast reader that later Xmas day she got to the part where Beth dies and burst into tears, causing my parents to wonderful why she was crying on Xmas day!!!! As I mentioned in your previous vlog I have read this book every year since I was 12 (70 years now). As always, love your content and have a Very Merry Christmas!!

I have never read Little Women but weirdly I picked it up today at a community bookshelf and then I saw your video - I am now intrigued. It is so interesting to think that your favourite character has changed over time as that would not be a situation that would cross my mind as I rarely re-read a book, but of course over time your affinity with certain characters would change as you yourself mature and change and gain life experience. I read Anne of Green Gables last year (having owned it as a child but not getting past the first few pages for some reason) and really loved it, I know I would have adored it in my very early teens and so am sad I never read it then, but happy to discover it as an adult - I think this book will be the same in terms of finding a diamond and wishing I had read it years ago. I haven’t seen the films either so I will be going in blind.
Wishing you both a very happy New Year, thank you for all the interesting videos and for helping us to really enjoy and appreciate reading - I adore your channel and yourself and your Mum make a fabulous duo 😊

I agree about Amy; I used to loathe her ( how could she put the manuscript on the fire?!) but, well, now after a little (a lot😉) more life experience, I am willing to be less judgemental and recognise her humanity. Merry Christmas to you both and thank you for all the splendid content you create. Much love. Xx

I planned to watch some of the "Little Women" movies after finishing the book, and so far, I've only watched the TV miniseries (with Susan Dey as Jo). I'll watch the one with Winona Ryder, since you both liked that one. I hope you and Donna have a very Merry Christmas and healthy and prosperous New Year! My husband and I both felt after watching the latest film that a series would be just wonderful. Each of the sisters needs their own voice in a series. Both films are very good, my favorite is still the one released in the 1990's really captured the atmosphere of the time and feature Joe as the main character. It was a surprise to me when reading the book to hear how much each sister had to contribute to the book. I agree with Heather that the Chapter Beth's Secret had such beauty and depth that I was truly moved by her bravery and acceptance of how her life path was coming to such an early end. The Professor is ideal for Jo. Laurie is perhaps my least favorite of the characters as he seem to be quite happy to move from Jo to Amy and is a restless soul. But I also feel he so much wanted to remain deeply connected to the March family for always. Which will do him the power of good. I read the novel and listen to the story on audible. Thank you for all of your hard work Miranda, the 'Seasons of Story' and the Commonplace book are really special. May both of you Miranda and Donna have a peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2024.🌲🌲🎀🎄☃

I loved my copy of Little Women as a girl and read and reread. I was very lucky to have a gifted seamstress Mother and she made me Meg and Jo slim stocking dolls and beautiful period dresses down to bloomers. Only Jo' s purple serge and black lace gown survives. Th2019 film was great and opening scene grips one, flings us in. I saw it on hopeful PXmas day 2019. The one with Winona Ryder 3 of my 4 daughters were able to attend with me. The scene with Beth in bed brought tears as a child. My winter Concord story at Alcott house I'll save for now. Thank you, what a great choice!

Little Women is a beautiful book. Enjoyed your discussion on its structure and characterisations. I have enjoyed the recent adaptations of the book for bringing out different aspects of the text, but, like you, the 1994 film is my favourite. The actors I think filled the roles so well.

I agree with so many of thing things said here! My mother also introduced the book to me and bought me the most beautiful copy she could find, purposely, in order to make it stand out as a very special book. I definitely felt more akin to Meg when I was a girl and didn't quite understand why my friends found Jo to be their favorite, though I really liked Jo. With this read, I also found that I really appreciated and felt bonded to all of the sisters. (I also could not stand Amy when I was a little girl but didn't feel that antipathy toward her this time ... with the exception of burning Jo's manuscript.) I was never a fan of Laurie and Amy as a girl. I saw that as weird but also as a betrayal and, of course, since I didn't like Amy then, it seemed so much more of a betrayal then than now. Additionally, I also prefer the 1990's movie. Merry Christmas! See you in January!

I hope you and your mum have a wonderful holiday! I will get right to the controversial part of my feelings about the book - I wasn’t very upset that Jo married, or who she married - I was really upset that she put aside her writing. Near the end of the book there was a line about how she may get back to it when she is older, but she was not writing once married. One of the things I loved about the book was the female creative agency - not only with Jo’s writing, Amy’s art, and Beth’s music, but with the things Beth made for her sisters and the children of the neighborhood, the creative ideas around clothing and adornment (Amy putting tulle over her dress, Jo and Meg each wearing one good glove and carrying one soiled glove), the plays they put on, etc. that it was a real blow to the heart to have such an integral part of Jo just - gone (I mean, she had a writing dress and hat, and genius was burning :)

We actually disliked the new one with Emma Watson in and didn't find the relationships believable and didn't enjoy the playing around with time.
