I recently watched on Prime both Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris and Mrs. Paltry at the Claremont which I probably never would have watched it not for you, Miranda. I can recommend both movies and I now have one of the books though I am hesitating in reading it since I know the ending! I so enjoy your outings with your Mom. My Mom, Sylvia, who died in early 2022, and I, used to love to go on outings as well to thrift stores, antique shops and, of course, second hand and regular bookstores. This time of year is always a bit difficult especially when we have those cold, set and gray dreary days in Western Oregon, USA, but today we have sunshine and that changes everything. Would that I could have joined you in that bookshop. Amazon has muscled so many independent bookshops out of business that I fear for the future of book browsing. I have that copy of Murray's commonplace book, which his son published after his father's death as a tribute. In the section of signs Murray noticed on his travels is one from a Japanese hotel stating that baths were not to be taken without the housekeeper. No doubt the hotel simply meant the housekeeper had to be informed, but the wording conjures up all manner of hilarious images. Merry Christmas and all good wishes for 2024 to you and your mother.
Oh! 13 rooms of books!!!! I was starting to hyper-ventilate AGAIN! Thank you for showing us all your finds, so fun! You mentioned Chattsford after you left the rooms you were staying in. Many, many yrs. ago I bout a teapot made in Chattsford, England from beautiful Teapot Shop in upstate New York. It was all white and was my first teapot that had a tea strainer basket in it! So easy to just lift out after steeping. You and your Mom have sooo much fun together. What a nice relationship. Wish I could live next door to you both. 🤗 I will miss you till mid Jan. but CERTAINLY understand your need for rest and planning. You put SO MUCH into your work. Are Scotland and Ireland such overcast and dreary weather as England? Michigan( the States) at least S.E. Mi. where I live is hard for me to endure because it is often overcast, dreary and gray. Never had that depressive seasonal disorder til moving here. I guess cause it is surrounded on 3 sides by huge lakes. Big enough for ships to sink in and many never found. Out of 365 days of the year, Mi. has 75 that are totally sunny!😑😑 According to the U.S. weather bureau. Little Women is my very favorite all time book since I was about 12 yrs. old. I collect editions of it and I am SO JEALOUS of the one you found! 😇🤗😉 Merry Christmas to both of you!!!!
I'm British and yes Scotland and Ireland are just as overcast and dreary (if not more so) as England. I'm in the south east of England and I quite like the weather down here - mild winters compared to the north and Scotland. I think you probably have to have been raised in the UK to not mind the weather here - I honestly don't even notice the greyness as it's like that most of the time and I don't cope well with heat. I can imagine it'd be hard to cope with for people from warmer climates though.
I love the sentiment behind the book Christmas is Coming. I’ll be adding this to my must buy list. The bookstore looked wonderful. I could just picture myself in one of the chairs by the window looking through piles of books. The Little Women edition is beautiful. Thank you for taking us along on this trip, Miranda. Scarthin Books looks like a lovely place to browse for books. We stopped in Bakewell on our trip to Derbyshire and tried Bakewell pudding (of course 😊). Amazing haul at Scarthin. It’s such a fabulous bookshop. I’ve been going since birth, the little room under the stairs used to be the children’s section and I used to read under there while mum and my gran would shop. Ha. Have a wonderful Christmas! Have a wonderful time off 🎄

If you are looking to progress your knitting skills can I recommend ‘very pink knits’ on UA-cam. The lady is American but knits in the British style. The videos are very clear and are the ones that I always recommend to people in the shop. So so glad you loved Scarthins - it’s always an adventure in there- although on a busy weekend going up and down those stairs and trying to look at the books piled up at the sides can be a little challenging 😊 I highly recommend Bakewell- not only for some fab bakeries and the hotel where Jane Austen stayed- but there’s also quite a few bookshops in Bakewell and nearby Matlock Town (not to be confused with Matlock Bath which is beautiful but is more famous for its chip shops and motor bikes) you probably drove through there I’m guessing. Just so delighted you and your mum enjoyed yourselves and showed off the little part of the world I call home xx

Miranda, As a child, our teacher would read from a book to us after our Lunch,one of the books she read to us, was Hugh Lofting's Dr. Doolittle books. I loved those stories ! I didn't care for the movies though, I felt the actors (Rex Harrison/and Eddie Murphy) didn't fit the image of the original Dr. Doolittle illustrations. I recently watched on Prime both Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris and Mrs. Paltry at the Claremont which I probably never would have watched it not for you, Miranda. I can recommend both movies and I now have one of the books though I am hesitating in reading it since I know the ending!
I so enjoy your outings with your Mom. My Mom, Sylvia, who died in early 2022, and I, used to love to go on outings as well to thrift stores, antique shops and, of course, second hand and regular bookstores. This time of year is always a bit difficult especially when we have those cold, set and gray dreary days in Western Oregon, USA, but today we have sunshine and that changes everything. Would that I could have joined you in that bookshop. Amazon has muscled so many independent bookshops out of business that I fear for the future of book browsing. I have that copy of Murray's commonplace book, which his son published after his father's death as a tribute. In the section of signs Murray noticed on his travels is one from a Japanese hotel stating that baths were not to be taken without the housekeeper. No doubt the hotel simply meant the housekeeper had to be informed, but the wording conjures up all manner of hilarious images. Merry Christmas and all good wishes for 2024 to you and your mother.
Oh! 13 rooms of books!!!! I was starting to hyper-ventilate AGAIN! Thank you for showing us all your finds, so fun! You mentioned Chattsford after you left the rooms you were staying in. Many, many yrs. ago I bout a teapot made in Chattsford, England from beautiful Teapot Shop in upstate New York. It was all white and was my first teapot that had a tea strainer basket in it! So easy to just lift out after steeping. You and your Mom have sooo much fun together. What a nice relationship. Wish I could live next door to you both. 🤗 I will miss you till mid Jan. but CERTAINLY understand your need for rest and planning. You put SO MUCH into your work. Are Scotland and Ireland such overcast and dreary weather as England? Michigan( the States) at least S.E. Mi. where I live is hard for me to endure because it is often overcast, dreary and gray. Never had that depressive seasonal disorder til moving here. I guess cause it is surrounded on 3 sides by huge lakes. Big enough for ships to sink in and many never found. Out of 365 days of the year, Mi. has 75 that are totally sunny!😑😑 According to the U.S. weather bureau. Little Women is my very favorite all time book since I was about 12 yrs. old. I collect editions of it and I am SO JEALOUS of the one you found! 😇🤗😉 Merry Christmas to both of you!!!!
I'm British and yes Scotland and Ireland are just as overcast and dreary (if not more so) as England. I'm in the south east of England and I quite like the weather down here - mild winters compared to the north and Scotland. I think you probably have to have been raised in the UK to not mind the weather here - I honestly don't even notice the greyness as it's like that most of the time and I don't cope well with heat. I can imagine it'd be hard to cope with for people from warmer climates though.
I love the sentiment behind the book Christmas is Coming. I’ll be adding this to my must buy list. The bookstore looked wonderful. I could just picture myself in one of the chairs by the window looking through piles of books. The Little Women edition is beautiful. Thank you for taking us along on this trip, Miranda. We stopped in Bakewell on our trip to Derbyshire and tried Bakewell pudding (of course 😊).

Amazing haul at Scarthin. It’s such a fabulous bookshop. I’ve been going since birth, the little room under the stairs used to be the children’s section and I used to read under there while mum and my gran would shop. Ha. Have a wonderful Christmas! Have a wonderful time off 🎄

Thank you for another lovely video. What an excellent book haul! I work in a wool shop in Northumberland and have recommended that 52 weeks book to several people. They also have a nice scarf book. If you are looking to progress your knitting skills can I recommend ‘very pink knits’ on UA-cam. The lady is American but knits in the British style. The videos are very clear and are the ones that I always recommend to people in the shop. What a fantastic bookshop and book haul. I love the look of the knitting pattern book. I used to knit a fair amount and did make some lovely jumpers. So so glad you loved Scarthins - it’s always an adventure in there- although on a busy weekend going up and down those stairs and trying to look at the books piled up at the sides can be a little challenging 😊 I highly recommend Bakewell- not only for some fab bakeries and the hotel where Jane Austen stayed- but there’s also quite a few bookshops in Bakewell and nearby Matlock Town (not to be confused with Matlock Bath which is beautiful but is more famous for its chip shops and motor bikes) you probably drove through there I’m guessing. Just so delighted you and your mum enjoyed yourselves and showed off the little part of the world I call home xx

These vlogs are bringing back lovely memories! My dad and I are huge Jane Austen fans and we went to Bakewell, Chatsworth, and Edensor in June 2015. Miranda, As a child, our teacher would read from a book to us after our Lunch,one of the books she read to us, was Hugh Lofting's Dr. Doolittle books. I loved those stories ! I didn't care for the movies though, I felt the actors (Rex Harrison/and Eddie Murphy) didn't fit the image of the original Dr. Doolittle illustrations.
