In Bradenton in the 1970's, we lived on a canal and could cast net for mullet right out our back yard! I'm in the Northeast now and really, really miss some good smoked mullet. ❤
I like the way you fillet the mullets, We leave the bone in for smoking here in New Zealand. But I'm going to try your method also. Great video! And thanks for sharing.
10 4 thanks for getting back to me, love the way you did the back bone to bad my stomach can't handle fried foods any more. We ate the male row as well. Ate it or starved. Thanks again brought back some good. Memories.
Brought back great memories. I remember my dad and neighbor running a net on Bonita Beach when I was little and the reward the following day. He used an old refrigerator with the stock wire racks. That was the early 70's.
I had no idea you made videos Loaderman! Wow, that was some nice fat mullet! Love your fish smoker set up and those turned out fantastic! Excellent use of those backbones and gizzards. I'll be watching for more videos!
I haven''t had smoked mullet in a while and that looks great. I live on the Mississippi Coast and around here Smoked Mullet is called Biloxi Bacon. Great Vid.
@@1loadermanjack We were in old Homosassa at that time about 1970. People in earlier times were tougher. My daddy was born in 1916 and he and his brothers pretty much raised them selves. They hunted and fished, not for sport but for food. Us kids had it better than that but we helped out.
I'm in the Tampa area. Is Buttonwood available in these parts? Also, does salting and seasoning just before smoking make it unnecessary to brine fish beforehand? Your method seems much easier.
Had headphones on listening and soaking it all up, then your waterhose broke the barrier between the 3rd and 4th dimension and now I am not sure what's real anymore. Lol Jokes aside, my grandpa used to sell smoked mullet, boiled peanuts and mayhaw jelly up in Steinhatchee for many years and as a boy I loved being there with him, sampling the goods. This video brought me back a bit. Thank you, I was looking for a way to smoke some mullet in his honor soon and it looks like I know a way now.
Glad to help. I've hunted in Steinhatchee Springs WMA several time with my dad years ago. If you need any help with the mullet let me know. Thanks for watching.
I've never had mullet. they're pretty scarce around here . About the only way i like fish is deep fried.Although that smoked fish with that seasoning looks pretty good. I could probably get into the gizzards since the chicken gizzard is my favorite part of the chicken. We never filleted the fish growing up so we had to eat around the bones. I once made some fish jerky. Did I mention once, LoL. Talk about super concentrated fish flavor.
I bet they are scarce there, I think you would like it and the gizzards, I have made mackerel jerky it was really strong fish flavor but it was good in small portions, Did I mention small, lol By the way how's that smell and taste of yours? Thanks for watching Have a good day. 👍😎
@@1loadermanjack thought I was getting my taste back but still isn't hitting on all cylinders. Sweet seems to register a little depending on what it is. Smell is short lived if I hold it to my nose.
I enjoyed your fileting skills especially saving the gizzard , but why would you throw the row away. You might as well not catch mullet during row season. Save them for those who are not going to waste them.
Great method and love the smoker! I noticed it's a full fish, do you not crack them open immediately on the boat? They've had a strong fish taste for me when sat as a whole fish if that's even possible to do for a mullet lol.
I usually do bleed the mullet but I had one of those "what were you thinking moments" 25 years ago when I freaked out a family that had young children that was watching me catch them so now depends on who's around me.
Question, I understand there are 2 types of mullet. Black mullet and silver mullet. I always heard one was good to eat, the other not so much. Here in south Louisiana I think it's the black mullet. People only use them for fishing. Dunno.
