Hoping you'll see this comment and respond. I'm very interested in Sonlight. I was looking at HBL B+C, but would like to do level 4 language arts, but am a bit confused about all of the readers. The language arts readers are separate from the HBL readers. Is that correct? There's so much, and honestly, their website confuses me. 🙈
Hi, you can do all of that. You would just need to select the B+C HBL and in the drop down menu select the Level 4 readers. Then add Level 4 LA to your cart.
I know you have mentioned it's totally doable to jump into level 4 without any previous Sonlight LA experience. Do you think it would be beneficial to grab the Diamond Notes pack and complete over summer before starting Level 4? Or, just work on composing a paragraph with a main idea and supporting details? We are working through an IEW Themed Unit this year, but I know that's a completely different setup than Diamond Notes. Thanks! :)
I think it depends on how comfortable you and your kiddo are with the main idea plus supporting detail strategy. I made a level 3 video that discusses the diamond notes a bit more, but it is only a 6 weeks process and so it would be easy to do over the summer!
Knowing that your kids come from the Abeka program....how would you integrate Sonligjt LA program? Would you be doing both or just Sonlight? Im on the same boat (Abeka for phonics), but Sonlight really keep grabbing my attention, but im still not grasping how the program works. To make it more clear, let's start from 1st grade coming from Abeka phonics.....thank you!
I would say it works well after grade 1 Abeka, especially if your kiddos is reading pretty well. I would do the SL LA placement to make sure you get the right writing level. But then you could start SL La and it would include copywork and one day a week of grammar type instruction. I do like the grammar because it is geared towards enhancing the writing. But I also picked up the extra phonics and vocab books to supplement. Sorry that seems a bit confusing - I do have a SL LA 1 and 2 review video that might help!
What do you do if you don’t have a strong reader?… the readers seem like they’d be overwhelming for my soon to be fourth grader (ie long). How long does the instructor guide give the child to finish each reader? Thanks!
Have you used the Grade 3 readers yet bc those are wonderful! If you have already, I would just pick and choose from the level 4 list but then maybe look for some library books similar to Level 3!
I would say it varies - on the copywork days, it's like 5 minutes. On the copy work application days, it's more like 10-15 minutes. On the creative expression days it ranges the most from probably 10ish to 30ish minutes. Then of course they have their readers on top of that!
This is such a good video! Love getting a clear look at and explanation of how it all comes together in this program!
Thanks Rachel!! Hope you are enjoying a restful December before baby comes 😊
I like how kids learn
Fun books! And those look like good activities.
It’s been really good so far!

@@sciencemama no I haven’t. I am new to sonlight, and will be purchasing this month. Will take a look at those! Thanks so much!
How much time each day does it take you to teach 1 child LA with Sonlight?

Are you still using SL language arts?
Not right this minute - but I have plans to weave it back in in the future :)
