I love Home Theater! And one name synonymous with Theater, is Klipsch. They have been making Movie Theater speakers for years. Heck they even designed a movie theater speaker for your own home. The Klipsch KL-650 THX Ultra II. These were the first real Theater speakers I could remember that you could get for your house. But they came with a nice price tag as well...around $1750...EACH. So instead of paying over $5,000 for my front soundstage, I decided to make my own speakers for around $200 each. Want to make your own? Come see how!

Is there a parts list for this build? Very interesting.
Yes sir. Parts list and full build plans for free are right here: toidsdiyaudio.com/forums/discussion/3500-speakers-for-350-klipsch-kl-650-inspiration/#post-15320
@@Toid Thanks!
If you do a diy for the KLF-30, that would be amazing.
Andrew, I wouldn't bother with the klf 30. I had the klf 20 and they are a very bright speaker. Very over priced for what they are. IMO
@@dickydoesaudio3466 I also found them to be bright and overpriced but they had great bass response, and took a lot of abuse. I wouldn't buy them, but I'd make them. I guess you could use the 20 or 30 series woofers with a Boston Acoustics tweeter and calm that brightness down. Maybe a better DIY kit for a floorstanding.
GREAT FORMAT .... talking and explaining what you are doing , while watching the build . and hearing the natural SOUNDS . best of all NO MUSIC

Ok if I could give you ten thumbs up I would! These are super impressive, and thank you so much for making them open source. Love your work!
You're welcome. I will take your 10 thumbs up to the bank . Honestly, this comment made my day. So thank you
Awesome job! They look fantstic
I have been building my own speakers since I was 16 yrs old (70's) Still do and saved thousands!
Have sold a few pairs too.. :)
That's the way to do it!
I absolutely love HT...couldn’t get away fast enough
I really love your channel keep it up man we need more in wall speakers and subs and horn speakers
Love this. Would you use the same speakers for the rear? Ive been thinking of making a setup in a small room, and would like some input on that. This is hands down the way Im going for the center and front left/right channels.
Another great video, think these are the speakers for me. Building these speakers but with the electronic functionality of the Klipsch The Fives would be the dream for under a TV :)
Great build, thank you for sharing. Is there a separate video for the crossover network? How do the three speakers (two woofer and horn) play together? Are there any specific issues to pay attention to?
Your channel inspired me to build my dream system
I would go crazy about that dented dustcap at the end. Nice speakers.
I'm from Trinidad, and I was, in my younger days, primarily into car audio and I still am, but I'm branching out into other HiFi and I'm looking into building my second home system, a replacement set of speakers for my HTS receiver, and I damn near had a heart attack within the first two minutes of this video. I have 4 of those Faital Pro 6FE200's on a Precision Power Black Ice 1000.4 in the doors of my car, along with two separate enclosures for putting outside the vehicle when parked which also have a single 6FE200 and a Faital Pro HF100 w/ Faital Pro LTH 102 Horn on another Black Ice 1000.4 but only on two of the 4 channels, all of which is controlled by an AudioControl DM-608 and a Pioneer X2800BS headunit. Bro it is the best sounding thing I've ever heard and it didn't exactly cost that much, it wasn't cheap but it sure as hell wasn't the most expensive option. Now I'm gonna take my tops boxes and bring those inside and give em a little test, they don't have a built in crossover though, so I'll have to figure that out first. I hope they sound good, because we have lots of local Faital Pro distributors who all compete heavily on prices so we get them at very good prices so it'll be really easy for me to source a few more to finish the build.
You've done it. You are the first channel I've turned on the notifications.
Woo hoo!
Great work, I love seeing these types of builds!
Follow up video with deep dive on development, frequency response?
Any build tips for us plebs without CNC tooling (or in general)?
Thanks, keep up the great work!
Thanks! I plan to do some of that in an upcoming video. I appreciate you guys telling me the things you want to see.
Nice build! I will say though, I've never had good luck with mustard holding my boxes together. I usually stick with the good 'ol mayonnaise 😂👍
Haha! There's a mayonnaise shortage where I live. I had to go with the mustard.
@@Toid hey man, gotta make due with what you have! 😄 nice views on this one btw, pretty popular build!
Thanks for sharing!
Wow, you’re very talented! Congrats
I have several questions if you don't mind. Have you done any off axis listening or measuring? Do you think these will be drastically better for seat to seat without significant toe in? Also, is the crossover design inteded for a baffle wall installation? I'd be interested in a slight enclosure redesign to minimize mounting speaker depth while maintaining the tune and volume of course.
This channel is awesome!
A question: how would you alter the internal baffling to isolate the horn driver and create a longer bass transmission line inside the cabinet to the port under the horn? would this significantly increase the bass response out of the cabinet?
Great work. Love the mustard bottle. (Funny how people concentrate on the most insignificant things.)
The mustard bottle gave me a pretty good laugh. For a second or two, my brain went "Wait, he just put mustard on his speaker".
I have also always wanted some of those Klipsch THX speakers and DIY is a great idea! Thanks!
wonderful !!!!!! and so exciting !!! Thanks a lot !!
You're Welcome
I've seen the klipsch thx horns on parts express, in the factory buyout section.
Hi
I'm thinking about getting the same amplifier for a JBL stage 82 in a 1.5 cubic foot vented enclosure. Is the amplifier as good as your video makes it look?
Any new videos coming from you soon?
listening to this video on a pair of Klipsch KL-650's
I have many questions :P
How did you decide on the drivers
What is the crossover design or did you biamp them
Why is the dust cap dented!
Do you orientate them with the horn wide or narrow?
Very nice can u make a full video of the interior stuffs too
Awesome! Would be interesting to have a direct comparison to the original KL-650. I mean, how close can you get $3500 worth of sound can you get for $400? An interesing question!
Hey man. Those are frickin cool! I wish I had the CNC stuff to make driver cutouts, etc! I hate building BOXES, but I love putting drivers INTO boxes and playing around with crossovers, measuring etc,. I have built lots of high efficiency stuff over the years but haven't looked recently - they have lots of nice stuff (midbass driver, compression driver, horns) that they (Part Express) didn't have a few year ago.
Awesome video! These are exactly what I have to been looking to build for my home theater setup. Are there any existing prebuilt crossovers that would work well with these? for instance on parts express etc. Keep up the awesome work man! thank you
There aren't any pre-built. I did give out the diagram for free on my website. the link is in the description. if you still need help, just get on the forum and talk to us and maybe someone would be willing to solder them for you.
I'd love to see you do a build of some small desktop speakers - active near field monitor type.
How does they perform for music and hifi?
not bad project. mic how/what sraff connected? and this one better than umic/berrengers/nadia/panasonic wm60/61mics? so, wating tests acoustic systems on open air.
How is the off-axis response and the sound variance seat to seat? With the waveguides in a verticle orientation, I would imagine they have a narrower sweet spot. Unless they're crossed over high enough to negate that?
The new versions are the 5000 and 6000L. We actually sell them all the time. We save the clients money in other areas to offset the cost. The proprietary drivers are extremely high-quality. My brother and myself both have them in our own homes. Nice build, I'm sure yours also perform well.
Nice video, thanks for posting. Looks like you used Sketchup. Any chance you'd make the file available for download?
Thanks for the video. Any details on the crossovers needed to get the speakers to perform well? Drivers and enclosure is one part of the equation.
Check the link in the description. It's all there: toidsdiyaudio.com/community/postid/4008/
So what do you hook these to? Is there DIY amplifier build that supports these?
Hi! I can't find the plans for these speakers! Do you have a link? Thank you very much
I wonder if I can achieve the same sound if I installed a in-wall version?
Could you create a video that shows your set up for your CNC machine. I would love to learn how you have that set up that looks awesome.
I am blown away by the knowledge you have.I am a firm believer that knowledge is power.
We're can I find the box dimensions I checked all the links and could not find the lay out. Also what design program are you using to model your xovers?
Hey I have a question. So I want to put the amplifier in the speakers so how many watts should the amplifier have?
Hey man sorry for the late reply but what kind of saw do you use. I'm just getting started building and am crowd funding for tools and building materials. I wanna ask for specific things I'll need instead of just money that way people will understand I'm honest and have a good cause. What saw do you use and . Any plasma cutters or 3d printers you would recommend as well? I keep wanting to wrap speakers like they wrap cars.
What type of software to use or if there's freware please let us know.. thanks 😊
Crossover information would be awesome to know. Solid build-- thanks!
Check the link in the description. All the build information is found there.
Thanks!
I have the Klipsch 650 ultra 2's. I'd love to purchase a flat pack from you, for even one of the speakers you just built. I have 3 spare horns for the ultras that I could use in a build, so that I could see if the sound of these match the sound of the Klipsch. Something to think about. Thanks
Hi
This is awesome. However, the link to the plans isn't working. Can you kindly share? thanks
with 3 of these for front would another 4 work for rear and surround ?
Amazing work! I'm looking into building these speakers myself, only problem I might have is the crossover work. Any tutorial on making them? Thanks again!
This might help you: ua-cam.com/video/ug3JG26lMtw/v-deo.html If not, you can always ask on the forum and we can help the best we can. www,toidsdiyaudio.com/community
@@Toid how much would you charge to Mach the front part of the speaker
Make
How do you take nodes of sound into account while making speakers?
By your opinion, which sounds better this type or a tower type
Great job. Can you show one sound demo? I understnd tht the desig change the response, but can you achieve the same sound with a better design?
Thanks 123toid for your awesome work in the diy speakers.
You might be able to. What Klipsch was doing with this type of design was to give you more direct sound which limits room interaction.
What/which crossover did you use?
Can you also build Klipsch rf7 III reference copy ? I want to own it badly for small price.
Hey Toids, nice build. Would be more awesome if you can include some short demo of the sound.
Oh man I totally wanted these years ago, great video! I wonder how these would perform as near field monitors. I am in the market to make something like that.
Probably not the greatest nearfield monitors. Remember they have a very narrow dispersion horizontally. I guess you could really tilt them towards you and they'd probably be fine. But it definitely wouldn't be my first choice for that.
Are CNC compatible plans available for the entire cabinets? Even better are flat packs available shipped in the US?
Also some of us place it on the floor and may benefit from putting them on angled stands to point the tweeter up. Is that something you recommend?
What training or schooling have you gone through,to able to build what you are able to build?
Was Dayton Audio XO2W-2K 2,000 Hz used?
What are your crossover points? What DB Octave rollover do you have? How much power are you running to them?
All that information is in the link in the description.
Would these be good for a hifi listening setup? Or is the tuning pretty specifically aimed for cinema applications? Great work by the way these look amazing and the final product is fantastic.
thank you for your kind words. That's a great question. I don't know that I would use it necessarily for Hi-Fi listening setup, if you're talking about a two channel. Even though the response is very flat in revealing, these don't really have a wide dispersion. And when I think of a two-channel Hi-Fi listening setup, I want a pretty wide dispersion to fill the area.
Hi Toid, just want to thank you so much for all your videos and explanations. I’m onboard and subscribed 👍👍
Have you fitted these in your HT, any chance of a demo. I’m going to build these for my FCR stage.
Again thanks so much for your content
I'm using them daily, but my theater isn't finished yet. I don't typically do sound tests. It's just too hard for you to experience it without being here. Having said that quite a few people have made them on the forum, I would go in there and talk to them. I'm also working on a version two
@@Toid Ooh how interesting, Are you planning on adding a 12/15" woofer to them? I will head over to the forums and check it out. I understand that we wouldn't hear what you hear, but it's something us watchers always yearn for lol. i'm out!! LOL
@@cheesegeezer5019 I used to do sound tests on all my videos. But video analytics show that very few people actually watch the sound test. So much so, that it actually hurts the video and UA-cam stops recommending it.
this will be an awsome father/son project if I can get my Dad on board!
hoping the Dayton audio horns come back in stock soon!
"any alternative?"
Not at this time. Hopefully they will come in stock sooner than later. The coronavirus has really affected supply
Can these be used as studio monitors, or are they just speakers?
I’m researching diy speakers for recording. Would this give me “flat” sound?
Great build. Any chance you would sell the font and inside panels of the speaker build.
There is. Contact me via the forum and I can see what I can do.
Really innovative, logical, well put together build. What a value, too. If someone has the space to justify it, these are REALLY great. Might want to consider some variant with a wider-spread horn for the height channels and/or side/rear channels (perhaps something a bit less directional, etc.) But obviously with the faitals and the compression tweeter they probably hit with some serious attack and "project" sound beautifully for theatre purposes.
Do you consider sending out built crossovers? Might be worth it for those who are interested.....
I might consider that.
@@Toidcan I buy that prebuilt crossover?
I’ve been throwing around the idea of making my entertainment system with built in speakers. You just made it easier for on deciding the components. Parts express has kits but not what I was looking for. Now plan on doing 3 of these with a down firing sub built into the cabinet of the entertainment system.
Do you think putting speaker mesh in front of these would hurt the sound quality?
@@TheGreatBooger it will not. You can also do spandex if you want to do a different color. All of those materials are considered acoustically transparent. It might attenuate your highs a little, but nothing extreme. And in the fact that if you're using a home theater receiver with room correction, it will correct for that anyway.
how do you make these as Studio Monitors?
Im really in need of some propper studio monitors, if anyone here knows of a grate Monitor amp to use for this speaker set up!
I would be grateful for any tip!
Wow they look great…
I’ve never used Mustard as wood glue. Lol. Great video!
Haha! You will the internet! It's the best. Typically Dijon is better, but I ran out.
@@Toid I think next time you should try Pitzman's Mustard - ua-cam.com/video/HgG_b9L7dwo/v-deo.html
Nice job, did your build roll off at 80hz also?
The link doesn’t provide plans for this speaker? Where can I get the plans?
Are those the actual Tweeters and woofers klipsch uses in their speakers?
Love your video. Wish the video was longer from start to finish (Like putting everything together). Will there be a part 2 video?
There will be a part 2 that will go over more in depth the design process. If you want more on how to assemble it, you can check out the link in the description. And feel free to ask any questions on the forum. I'd be happy to answer any that I may have missed.
Thanks again!
awesome job. Hey where and how much for a machine like that. I've been building speakers but I need something like what you're using. thanks
Thank You. I bought the shapeoko XXL, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. Good cutting area, but belt drive just isn't great for what we do. I plan to upgrade mine to something like the Millright Mega V
They are cool. My brother built one. Pretty cheap to build diy if you know how.
What crossover? What port length/tuning frequency?
how do you find sideways horns compared to vertical horns?
I like the look of these but I listen more music than theatre. How well would these suffice with stereo music ? I would build these and then a separate ribbon tweeter module to switch to for different kinds of audio. What do you think ? Currently own b and w dm602 what do you think I would think of the change from those to these ?
These have a much narrower dispersion that's better for theater than music. I personally would pass on building these and build something with the wider dispersion for two channel music.
Hey! Compliments for the work. They really look sweet and I might build them for fun. The only thing I was missing is a part/video of you demonstrating them. How do they sound!?!?
And I haven’t checked the built plans yet, but I guess plenty of us would love to have the CNC files ;-)
Contact me via the website and if it's for personal use I'd be happy to send you some CNC files. The sound is amazing. I hear things that I've never heard before in movies but that really doesn't come across in youtube, which is why I don't typically do sound test videos.
Bruh loving ur content im the same way i love to build speakers but i havent done anything larger than 8'' as yet but i will soon
:-) :-) :-)
why was there two conections per speaker box? was one for the woofers and one for the tweeters?
How do they sound as a stereo pair on an SMSL amp? That would be an interesting setup to review. Maybe compare w your Marantz?
Well tonight we did an outdoor movie night with these and I use an ice power 2x20 watt amplifier at 8 ohms. And it did a great job filling the area with sound. I was actually surprised since we were sitting about 20 feet back.
Do you have a CNC router laying around?
if you where to buy a speaker that can be identical on all channels minus the center channel & Sub's of course , for a 7.2.6 speaker surround setup. choosing (3) different ((( 1st, 2nd , 3rd place ))) pre-build's & (3) D.I.Y from Part Express what would you're recommendations be. can you include 3 chooses from both category's for the budget / value person in mind ...
I am now listening to "Pipeline - steel guitar" on my DIY speakers that I built in 1978. The each contain one 15" woofer, two mid-range drivers, and four tweeters. WOW.
The police did show up once due to complaints of excessive noise.
Everyone who has heard then asked my to build speakers for them.
I didnt see this build plan in your website, saw the newer one but that has a costly compression driver and it's out of stock at parts express. Is there anyway I can buy this build plan?
Yes. Email me sales@toidsdiyaudio.com
Those are looking great! Would they be good studio monitors? With subs of course. Sorry about the dust cap by the way, nothing a steady hand and a vacuum cleaner can't fix though 👍
Thanks for the tip man. I don't think I would personally use them for studio monitors even though they have a flat response.
Now the question is how do they sound side by side a thx? Nice build👍
I realise that these are intended for home theatre but have you tried two of them in a hi-fi rig? If so, how did they do?
Wait but how do I connect all the wires and electronics? Is there a part 2?
How shallow could you conceivably make these boxes, and would the crossover need to be adjusted for in-wall/on-wall use? Thanks.
You probably won't go much shallower than what they are. They compression driver and Waveguide take approximately 7" of depth before wiring. You might be able to narrow it by a few inches, but it's not going to be enough to go in wall. Unless your wall is deeper than most. Typically the crossover does get adjusted for in-wall use. However, if you're using some type of room equalization, that should account for it.
@@Toid Thank you.
how about some plans for some surrounds to pair with these.... anything you can recommend?
These work well with them: ua-cam.com/video/ASzI-DAHDFE/v-deo.html I am working on a small commercial design theater surround design. Not sure when that will be up though.
what tool is it that smooths out the wood after cuting it?im wanting to buy one so i was just wondering
Orbital sander?
Ok these look sweet but I'm kinda lost, where is the build/parts list of the crossover board??
