This tradition is definitely a lost art...when I got married we did the broom hop the hanfasting, fresh floral hair wreaths, exchanged keys and weapons....the most fairy tale ceremony they never told us about.

Nicely and thoughtfully done! As another "maker of things" I have to say that Wedding props are always super stressful, since you only get one shot to make (or ruin) a couple's day.
That can weigh heavily on you...
That first part is called 'plying', people who spin thier own yarn do this after they've spun up the fiber into one strand-however, this first strand is spun all one way and will fall apart if it unspins enough, or kink up. They double it up and braid the two (or three, or four etc) in the opposit direction so the yarn is stronger and won't fall apart and won't kink up.
It's also how you make the poppers at the end of a bull whip the plaiting is similar to making the overlays of the body of a whip.
Wait is that where 2 ply 3 ply comes from???
Had to comment on this one because my husband and I made our handfasting cord too! It included a strip from my wedding dress (I made that too😅) and some of my partners suit where I hemmed the pants of his suit. The cherry on top was one of my bridesmaids braiding in a challah bread pattern, one of the coolest parts of the day ❤
Even better than bundling the cords that way is if you can find some sort of spool or a shuttle like you'd use when weaving on a loom. It's even less likely to get tangled that way, and it's easier to unwind without dropping more than you intended to.

Giant metal pole is a spud bar, I think 🤔. I own one and affectionately refer to it as the staff of many uses.

I've always known it as a spud bar, also. Maybe it or something like it is used in planting potatoes?
I've seen it as a wrecking bar or breaker bar in stores.
Spud is brittish slang for potatoes, and you use the spitbar to penetrate the ground if it is harder than usual to be able to plant the small potatoes
I know them as a tanker bar.

I've just woven my friends re-handfasting (30 years) cord/ribbon. 20/2 silk yarn on an inkle loom. 1 inch wide took several days to weave. Just in time The handfasting is this sunday. Made the dress (linen viking style so pretty easy) and the trim for the dress too (plain inkle woven silver coloured 20/2 silk).
If you want to measure out many pieces of yarn/string/cord/etc that are all the same length the best tool for the job is a warping board. It is a tool used by weavers to measure out lengths of yarn for warping the loom. You can buy a warping board, but it's also an easy woodworking project if you want to make your own. (Also, making your own is much cheaper than buying)

This is SO beautiful! What an honor to be such an important part of this lovely couple's day. I love how much care and thought and symbolism and detail you put into this project and how much you learned while doing it. I am genuinely inspired to do something like this if I ever get married.

My wife and I made our cords we did five separate ones each representing a specific idea to make one larger “rope”. It was really fun and different thing to do at our wedding.

It’s fucking annoying sometimes and sometimes it’s fine. 😂
If you haven’t tried it, try spinning with a hand spindle. If you liked this you might like that.

Well done! I have a challenge for your knot tying skills. Tie an Ocean platte. This will create a flat knot, to be used as a door or tent mat. To keep your tent clean. Use natural fiber fiber rope from any home supply store. 50’ gives a nice size. It’s actually easy to tie but after you trace the knot three times to fill in the gaps it looks really good.
That is so cool. Matching suits, spirit animals, ancestral practices! We straights have some catching up to do, although I've seen a few cool straight non-traditional (not modern western traditional, but actually very traditionally traditional) wedding ceremonies. Either way, this is very cool

I would think making 2 more of the griffon centerpieces. Making them in to either belt buckles or some bracelets. So they can always have it with them and keep the rope at home.
In the UK it’s a Road bar point on one end and a chisel on the other it’s for work on road surfaces I use it for heavy fused down manhole covers

I remember weaving a 4 part cord with my witch friends from green, white, red and black that was used in a protection binding ceremony. This is so much more elegant and beautiful, though!

The reason I like this channel so much is watching the ideas outside the box. Your rope walk was a decent distance for a good amount of cord. There are several ways to do cord/rope.youve taken a variation on finger weaving and mixed it with rope making. Impressive.
I'm working on a medieval spindle device to spin jute/bast cord. I'm hoping to inkle weave them as that's what I'm familiar with.

That is so pretty! I wish I had seen that before our handfasting. I ended up using decorative curtains pull cord and they were soft and a little shiny, but I wish I had made it myself

Suggest next time you do it, allow it to hang as opposed to lying on the table. Continue with your bundles of the warp yarns. This will be easier to control and less bothersome than what you had done.
As a fellow (hobbyist) craftsman, I gotta say you saying that the hardest part was not putting something in you mouth was the realist thing ever. I have put many things in my mouth that I shouldn't have. But, it's just so convenient. What is a mouth if not a third hand?

I do a lot of medieval camping events and some I'd really like, is a way to take a bath. I need some sort of collapsible bathtub. I don't trust the inflatable kind for camping environments. Maybe someone Clev3r could figure it out 😁

What kind of laser engraver are you using?
That one is the Omtech MOPA Fiber laser. We have an 80w, but they come in all varieties. Ours might be a little overkill 🤣🤣

Before his death, Grant from The King of Random created a rope making device. Not sure if it would be of use, but if you ever find you have the need to make your own again, it might be helpful.

Might have to look into füm. I'm a social smoker at conventions and I think something like that would help me cut back after cons. It's less of an addiction issue and more phasing it out as like, a ritual action 😂

When judging tbe proper thickness, assuming the cordage was bought at a store and not online, I'm surprised the staff wasn't helpful. I'm sure they deal with lots of customers needing to do custom braids.
