Curious Life it’s not even a pandemic problem.... there’s virtually no real benefits to living in Dubai besides staring at modern architecture .... no citizenship limited culture (for westerners) and odd religious laws. The Dubai bubble is over. Who wants to be living in AC 24/7?
@@lewizzrocks I am not sure if you are speaking from experience. But living in Dubai and studying in Abu Dhabi for 6+ years. I honestly could not find a better place to live. Of course there are problems such as the waste culture in some companies, but other than that this country is probably one of the best. I have lived and studied in NYU and London for a combination of 7+ years but ever since moving and working in the UAE....well I can't describe how grateful I feel. I do agree a bit with the citizenship idea but living here with a work visa is basically the same disregarding the free health care. But hey listen, this country is only 49 years old. It is still in its very very early developing stage. I work as an engineer here and they honestly have plans stretching to 2100. Trust the process.
Dubai doesn't need another tower - it needs another garden. A massive botanical garden full of shops and maybe a little putt putt golf. A place where you can spend that hot day walking around comfortably and contently. Maybe a little waterfall. Ice cream shops - tea shops - fresh vegetables grown organically at the garden. Maybe even a little train track throughout for the kiddies.
I asked an employee that works with emaar and he said the tower it on hold so that they can progress with the nearby building. It doesn’t make any since building a tower in the middle of no where, not to mention that the creek area is going to be the new dubai downtown. After having enough progress in the area they will hopefully resume the construction of the tower.
But who would even live there? The Creek area is supposed to contain half a million new apartments. They can't even sell all the apartments currently on the market. The number of customers they are expecting simply does not exist. Hence why most of the Creek area is currently on hold, and why developers such as DAMAC and Nakheel are treading water to stay afloat in their massive pools of debt.
The novelty of Dubai has worn thin, that's the issue more so than recessions, or the pandemic. The economy was pretty much stagnant way before Covid, and their push to become a tourism Mecca was sidelined by the utter mess of a city that it is. All the great tourist cities are walkable ones, with easy access and transitions from one attraction to another. Dubai on the other hand is a bunch of disjointed cluster attractions, where you need a car to get from one to the next. I feel bad for them because in theory the tourism plan was a good one, and the diversification away from oil was needed, but the execution was not well thought out and now billions have been spent, and the financial coffers or running dry
damieg82 Nobody in their right mind would claim that Dubai has been flawlessly executed in terms of architecture and city planning, but then no urban plan in history has come to life within the four corners of any plan no matter how flawless or flawed it may be. Organic growth, both of the fill in variety and repurposing is necessary and that takes decades at a minimum. It would be premature to write off Dubai at this stage. It has a world class infrastructure (airport, public transport, data, water and sanitation, legal, culture (albeit embryonic), etc.). In short, it is premature to write off Dubai at this stage.
@Neel Javia: Dubai already has the world's tallest tower, yet still there's a real estate crisis. Having a record-breaking tower in itself is no guarantee - or indicator - of success.
@Neel Javia: Yes, and that happened already. Dubai got attention for having the world's tallest building. But that doesn't mean the feat can be repeated with the same success. And even the success of Burj Khalifa didn't bring Dubai half as far as the plans from the mid-2000s suggested.

Tallest Building just for the sake of tallest Building without any necessity is wastage of resources(if that matters to people who have plenty of resources)
Remember back in early days of global discovery when the tallest structure on earth was something discoverers could potentially stumble upon in the egyptian desert or somewhere else not yet mapped by science? Imagine walking around somewhere in your country's more remote places now and suddenly - Boom - kilometre tall tower ^^ "Huh...uhm....guys?!" I wish it wasn't a multibillion race to the top but rather an architecture contest where design and sustainability win out. The towers we COULD have...
Reminds me of the space race .This building is ready to ‘take off’ whenever someone challenges them . I saw the burj khalifa in 2018 and was magnificent.
We agree - the internet will be better for it. Twitter are trialling a new feature where the system flags up to you that you haven't actually opened a link or read an article before you go and re-tweet it.
I would say because it is arguably a pointless vanity project, but that would describe so much of what Dubai has actually built. That said, this one is exceptionally pointless even by the standards of Dubai.
Why is it vanity? I guess you live in a flat featureless landscape with no architecture do you? Architecture wise Dubai has pushed the boundaries on so many projects and it has some exceptional buildings, the Islamic museum being the latest. Tall buildings are built to push the boundaries and whilst there is an element of vanity there is also a far greater practical reason. The Burj Khalifa for eg was built as a centre piece and has attracted millions of tourists so it’s a Gold standard revenue earner as well. I have been involved in Dubai and it’s construction since 2004 by the way. To know Dubai and comment on it you need to understand it, sorry but it appears you have no idea.
Tyler Kochman What are you talking about, it’s built around a desert, what do you classify as decent planning, have you ever been here? I have lived here for 15 years and I am in construction. The buildings that have gone up have been frankly a miracle given the platform they have been tasked with sitting on, everyone’s always bashing the UAE especially Americans, one only has to look at the chaos in the US now to be reminded of the saying “people in glass houses” ...Never mind.
@@Fsrjtyttzma for instance, it is elitist to not preserve as much of the city's coastline as possible for public use. Significant chunks are occupied by private beaches. It goes against good planning principles. A city like Chicago, on the otherhand, has nearly its entire coastline consisting of public land. Rio de Janiero is another example of a city with a largely public coastline. Additionally, so much of Dubai is car centric. If they had invested some of their massive money into better citywide transit, that could have been avoided

Lack of demand is a key reason why it **failed**. They already have the world's tallest tower, but still there's a real estate crisis. It takes more than a tall tower to attract investment.
only 1 billion dollars to build? thats a lie, Burj khalifa costed 4 billion so why would this cost only 1, besides I dont really think they've scrapped the plan, or else all of us locals would know, I'll go near the construction site tomorrow and ask a worker about its progress

Dubai is a bubble.
I don't think its economic model is sustainable.
i think they were doing fine since they tried to avoid being very oil-dependent unlike the Saudis, and they even make a new agreement with Israel unlike the Saudis again
It's not an economic model, it's a place to sink oil cash.
@@xpusostomos I would disagree, seeing how Dubai is the leading city in renewable solar energy, they are just experimenting new ways to be on top. They have only been around for less than 50 years, give them time.

@AnnaOop you can say it’s canceled until they remove or destroye the base , and btw I don’t think they canceled because they spent millions on the architecture design and planning and they built the base

Makes sense

Nobody in their right mind would claim that Dubai has been flawlessly executed in terms of architecture and city planning, but then no urban plan in history has come to life within the four corners of any plan no matter how flawless or flawed it may be.

I would say because it is arguably a pointless vanity project, but that would describe so much of what Dubai has actually built. That said, this one is exceptionally pointless even by the standards of Dubai.
The whole of Dubai is pure vanity.
@@Fsrjtyttzma if they were "architecture wise" they would have practiced decent city planning. They made so many mistakes in that realm.
Phenomenal video as always 👏
Thank you so much!! 👍👍
So happy to finally see Creek Tower on this channel❤️! I'm hoping to still see this achievement in person one day.... And I haven't even left the African continent 😂🌍
But it stopped
Yup. Seeing that it is the backup plan for reclaiming the world's tallest building title, there might still be a chance for it to be completed.
Hey, B1M... here in New York City they've just opened One Vanderbilt, although the "observatory" isn't scheduled to open to the public until next year.
@Neel Javia I haven't been there yet I'm waiting until I can do something, like go to the observation deck, or go to a restaurant, when I'm there. It will be a strange sensation to be looking *down* at the top of the Empire State Building!
I really hope it gets finished, it looks astonishing
At what point does it stop being a tower and just a needle.

What a Calatravesty 😭

Buba Dukuray it’s a word game referencing architect Santiago Calatrava and the word travesty.
alexcnb ohh got it
Haha all of his projects are getting stalled the past decade 😂
I saw the scale model of this project in the dubai mall few years back. It would have been a sight to behold.
I see the lack of demand for office and residential space as a key reason in why this project is necessary. Dubai needs the spotlight back on them.
Lack of demand is a key reason why it **failed**. They already have the world's tallest tower, but still there's a real estate crisis. It takes more than a tall tower to attract investment.
Great video guys 👍🏼
only 1 billion dollars to build? thats a lie, Burj khalifa costed 4 billion so why would this cost only 1, besides I dont really think they've scrapped the plan, or else all of us locals would know, I'll go near the construction site tomorrow and ask a worker about its progress
Because it's got almost no usable floorspace. It's just a pointless structure, more a sculpture than a building.
I reeeeeally hope construction does begin again. It is such a magnificent sculpture of architecture.
Short answer: oil and tourism income go whomp whomp.
