My grandparents lived just downhill from Thomas (19 Kossuth St.) We could see the tower from their living room windows. The people of Bangor call it "Tommy the water tower". There is a spiral staircase inside between the steel pipe and the outside housing. They used allow public access to the top but they closed it in the 1940s when an 11 year old child, who was climbing where he shouldn't have been, slipped and fell to his death. I hear the city of Bangor has or is going to open quarterly tours to the promenade deck, guided by Bangor Water District. Would I ever love to see the views from Tommy~! I've been wanting to do that my whole life~! (60+ years).
Covered and lined with lead paint. That would be right for a nineteenth century water tower.. What we are seeing is the outside sheathing with the steel, or iron tank inside, as weather protection. That sheathing appears to be wood, probably cedar. It seems well cared for so, maybe, they removed the lead paint years ago, after the danger had been shown. If so, Good On Them! This is also about the time of galvanized pipe, (Called lead pipe for some reason, now), was coming in, I wonder how that is?
